Captain Janeway faced unique challenges in the Delta Quadrant with compassion, connection, and tough decisions. Season 4 introduced Seven of Nine, enhancing Voyager's story with complex characters and fresh dynamics. Voyager's best episodes showcased moral dilemmas, character development, and alliances with new alien species.
The best episodes from each of Star Trek: Voyager's seven seasons represent the unique challenges faced by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the USS Voyager crew as the only Starfleet vessel in the Delta Quadrant. Compassion and connection were part of Voyager's story from the jump, as a diminished Starfleet crew needed to join forces with Commander Chakotay's (Robert Beltran) Maquis crew in order to survive in a far-flung corner of the galaxy, populated with brand-new Star Trek aliens, like Talaxian chef Neelix (Ethan Phillips) and psychic Ocampa Kes (Jennifer Lien). Each week, Voyager encountered new moral dilemmas unique to the Delta Quadrant, but unmistakably Star Trek in nature.

Episodes like "Before and After" (Kes), "Mortal Coil" (Neelix), "Latent Image" (The Doctor), and "One" (Seven of Nine) brought depth and development to these characters. Captain Janeway's standout episode was "Year of Hell," which demonstrated her heroism, loyalty, vulnerability, and complexity.
Each main character on Star Trek: Voyager got a chance to shine during the show's run, and all of them have an episode that stands out as their best. Voyager was the fourth series in the Star Trek timeline and featured a cast of diverse characters, including Star Trek's first female Captain, Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). During Voyager's run, Janeway led her crew on a journey through the Delta Quadrant after the USS Voyager became stranded on the other side of the galaxy in the show's pilot episode, "Caretaker, Parts I&ii.

Jennifer Lien's departure from Star Trek: Voyager had a significant impact on the show, and her character Kes was missed by the cast. Despite personal struggles, Lien's acting talent was highly praised by her fellow cast member Roxann Dawson. Kes was a valued member of Voyager's crew, known for her telepathic abilities and caring nature, and her absence left a void in the show's dynamic.
Jennifer Lien left Star Trek: Voyager in season 4, and fellow cast member Roxann Dawson reflects on the impact Lien's character, Kes, made on the show. Voyager followed Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) as she led the USS Voyager through the unexplored Delta Quadrant on the long journey back to Earth. Actress Kate Mulgrew had an issue with co-star Jeri Ryan and her character's inclusion in Star Trek: Voyager. Ensign Harry Kim actor Garrett Wang discusses difficulties during Voyager's filming and says that Mulgrew expressed her frustration through snarky comments and confrontations on set. Despite their on-set tension, both Mulgrew and Ryan have gone on to reprise their roles in other Star Trek projects.
Garrett Wang, who played Ensign Harry Kim on Star Trek: Voyager, addresses the problematic on-set relationship between co-stars Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan. Wang's Operations Officer, Harry Kim, was part of Star Trek: Voyager's cast led by Mulgrew's Captain Kathryn Janeway since the series premiere. Following a ratings-related shakeup of the show's dynamics, Ryan joined Voyager season 4 as Seven of Nine, coinciding with the departure of Kes (Jennifer Lien). Gary Graham had a prominent role as Detective Matthew Sikes in the sci-fi crime series Alien Nation, which also addressed social issues in a science fiction setting. Although Gary Graham was considered for the roles of Janeway and Sisko in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, he ultimately played the Vulcan Ambassador Soval in Star Trek: Enterprise. Graham's involvement in Star Trek extended to fan films, where he portrayed his characters such as Soval and Ragnar, receiving positive feedback from fans.
The late Gary Graham is best known for his role as Ambassador Soval in Star Trek: Enterprise, but the actor's franchise connections go much further than the stoic Vulcan. Gary Graham's breakthrough role was Detective Matthew Sikes in the sci-fi crime series Alien Nation, and its subsequent TV movies. Like Star Trek, Alien Nation viewed contemporary issues like social injustice and racism through a science fiction lens.

On the morning of January 23, 2024, actor Gary Graham, star of the "Alien Nation" TV series, the cult classic "Robot Jox," and multiple-time "Star Trek" supporting player, passed away at the age of 74. Graham had a prolific acting career, appearing in single episodes of many of the hottest TV shows of his day, including "Starsky & Hutch," "The Incredible Hulk," Knots Landing," "CHiPs," "T.J. Hooker," "Hunter," "M.A.N.T.I.S.," "Diagnosis Murder," "Ally McBeal," "Jag," and "Nip/Tuck." He had an easy demeanor, allowing him to play comedic affable characters just as well as intense, serious ones.
Trekkies likely know Graham best for playing Soval on "Star Trek: Enterprise." Soval was the snippy Vulcan ambassador who oversaw Earth's very, very slow transition from post-war ruin to a thriving society ready for space exploration. Tom Wright praises the scenes with Jennifer Lien in which their characters share a deep emotional connection. The Kes and Tuvix relationship is crucial in helping the audience understand that Tuvix is not the same as the original characters. Kes' negative reaction to Tuvix's romantic advances highlights the loss of both Neelix and Tuvok, influencing Janeway's decision to separate Tuvix.
Tom Wright, who played Tuvix in Star Trek: Voyager season 2, episode 24, "Tuvix", has high praise for the scenes that he shared with Kes actress Jennifer Lien. In "Tuvix", a transporter accident merges Lt. Tuvok (Tim Russ) and Talaxian chef Neelix (Ethan Phillips) into a single being named Tuvix, who shares characteristics of both Tuvok and Neelix. Most members of the USS Voyager's crew grow accustomed to Tuvix over the months that the hybrid being is with them, but Kes (Jennifer Lien) becomes uncertain when Tuvix wishes to resume Neelix's relationship with Kes.

Jeri Ryan's addition to the cast of Star Trek: Voyager in season 4 caused some frustrations among the original cast. Seven of Nine quickly became a popular character with fans due to her knowledge of Borg technology and her role in helping Voyager return home. Despite her popularity, the heavy focus on Seven of Nine's storyline and the marketing strategy to attract new viewers created difficulties for the original cast members.

Wang admits that his absence from the event was completely unintentional and due to forgetting about it while at Ikea. Wang's honesty and remorse demonstrate his desire to be there with the rest of the cast to bid farewell to Jennifer Lien and support her during her departure from Star Trek: Voyager.
Star Trek: Voyager actor Garrett Wang says he's "still mad" that he missed out on a farewell dinner for Jennifer Lien, who played Kes in the first 3 seasons of Voyager. Kes's main relationship on Star Trek: Voyager wasn't with Neelix but with Captain Janeway, who became a mother figure to her. The Kes-Neelix relationship struggled to be believable or likable due to the age difference and Neelix's jealousy. Even after Kes left the series, her bond with Janeway remained strong, highlighting the importance of their mother-daughter dynamic.
Kes's (Jennifer Lien) biggest relationship on Star Trek: Voyager wasn't actually with Neelix (Ethan Phillips). Kes was first introduced in Voyager's pilot episode, "Caretaker," and was a main character on the show for the first three seasons before departing at the beginning of season 4. A young Ocampan woman, Kes's main storylines on Voyager were the development of her telepathic abilities, her apprenticeship to the Doctor (Robert Picardo) in sickbay, and her romantic relationship with Neelix, the Talaxian trader who had enlisted the USS Voyager's help to save her from the Kazon in the pilot.

"The Gift" was a challenging episode for the cast, as it marked Jennifer Lien's departure from Star Trek: Voyager. Scenes between Lien and her co-stars reflected the emotional reality of her last episode. The most emotional scene was the farewell between Lien's character Kes and Captain Janeway, with real emotions of saying goodbye to Lien shining through.
Star Trek: Voyager actors Robert Duncan McNeill (Lt. Tom Paris) and Garrett Wang (Ensign Harry Kim) remember filming Jennifer Lien's final episode as Kes. Voyager season 4, episode 2, "The Gift" was an especially difficult episode for cast members who had grown close to Lien during her time on the show. McNeill suggests that scenes between Lien and her co-stars seem to reflect "the reality of Jennifer Lien's last episode", with Wang agreeing that fellow Voyager actors were affected by the impending departure of both Lien and Kes, particularly those who often shared screen time with Lien.

Kes and Seven of Nine could have coexisted, creating an interesting conflict and invigorating Voyager's storylines. Kes' presence in later seasons would have given Captain Janeway an edge in battling Delta Quadrant aliens. Kes' potential dark turn and her telepathic abilities could have had significant impacts on the narrative and character development.
Star Trek: Voyager would have been different in its latter seasons if Kes (Jennifer Lien) had stayed on the USS Voyager instead of departing in Voyager season 4, when her ostensible replacement Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) arrives. There's no narrative reason both Kes and Seven couldn't have existed concurrently, especially since the differences between Kes' optimistic innocence and Seven's detached efficiency could have made for an interesting conflict that would still serve the purpose of invigorating Voyager's lagging storylines.

Star Trek: The Next Generation and Voyager portrayed empathy as an alien superpower, hindering the development of empathic characters like Troi and Kes. Troi's reliance on her Betazoid powers limited her ability to cultivate empathy as a skill, while Kes' empathic abilities were overshadowed by her growing telepathy and psychokinesis. However, in Star Trek: Discovery and Strange New Worlds, empathy is redefined as a real-world, attainable skill demonstrated by human characters like Captain Pike and the empathic alien, Saru.
Star Trek's problem with empathic characters finds a solution in how it evolves as a concept in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Star Trek: Voyager's Neelix (Ethan Phillps) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) were very different on the surface but actually had some surprising things in common. Kira served as the Bajoran liaison officer on the Deep Space 9 space station under the command of Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). Kes's telepathic powers grew and evolved throughout her time on Star Trek: Voyager, from communicating telepathically to sensing minds and emotions and even manipulating matter with her mind. The true scope of Kes's powers was never defined, leading to confusion and inconsistencies in the show. This was likely due to the creative team not knowing how to handle the character and Jennifer Lien's departure from the show. Kes's return in season 7 showcased her most advanced powers yet, but only in one episode, leaving viewers with more questions than answers about her abilities.
Throughout her run on Star Trek: Voyager, one of Kes's (Jennifer Lien) biggest storylines was the development of her telepathic powers. She struggled to communicate about her issues and did not seek help. Executive producer Jeri Taylor and others tried to reach out and offer assistance, but Lien would not open up or consider getting help. Her emotional struggles ultimately became more powerful than her and she was unable to continue. The original explanation for Lien's departure as a result of limited potential and underdeveloped characterization was a cover story crafted to protect the vulnerable actress. Kes' replacement with the more exciting character Seven of Nine seemed to support this explanation, but the real reason remains a mystery.

Star Trek: Voyager's Doctor, despite trying out multiple names, ultimately stuck with just "Doctor." His journey to find a name was a subplot in the show's early seasons, but later became less important. Some of the names the Doctor considered were Schweitzer, Shmullus, Van Gogh, Mozart, Kenneth, and Joe. Each name was associated with significant events or people in his life. While the Doctor was often referred to as "Doc" or "Voyager's Doctor," he never chose a specific name for himself. The lack of a name became less significant as the show progressed, and it no longer seemed to be a priority for the character.

The crew of the USS Voyager had to find creative solutions to survive in the Delta Quadrant, making unorthodox modifications to the ship and its equipment. Captain Janeway made concessions, like giving up her private dining room for a kitchen and removing replicators, to ensure the crew was fed during their journey. Voyager made significant upgrades, such as the Delta Flyer and astrometrics lab, that improved its capabilities and made it unlike any other Starfleet ship at the time.

Two main characters in Star Trek: Voyager undergo personality swaps in later seasons, allowing them to realize their true potential. The premise of Voyager, with the crew thrown into challenging circumstances, fosters character growth and long arcs, leading to significant personality shifts.
Two of Star Trek: Voyager's main characters ended up swapping personality traits in later seasons, something that helped both realize their true potential. While Voyager did a good job of establishing its main cast from as early as the pilot episode, all characters go through growing pains on a new show. Voyager did better at this than some series at the start, but many of the show's characters changed dramatically in later seasons.

Seven of Nine, portrayed by Jeri Ryan, became one of Star Trek's most beloved characters due to her compelling portrayal and character development. Despite being added to appeal to male viewers, Seven became a fully realized character who was not defined by her appearance or outfits. In Star Trek: Picard, Seven's character continues to evolve, ultimately becoming a Starfleet Commander and potentially the lead in a spinoff series.
Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Picard's Seven of Nine has become one of Star Trek's most beloved and enduring characters, largely due to Jeri Ryan's compelling portrayal. Introduced in Voyager season 4, Seven of Nine was part of the Borg Collective before Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the Voyager crew severed her connection to the other drones. At first, Seven found her transition back to humanity difficult, but with the help of Janeway and her crew, Seven eventually made her home on Voyager.

Voyager's unique circumstances forced the crew to become comfortable with each other quickly, leading to one of the closest-knit crews in Star Trek. "Parallax" established the dynamics of important relationships, such as Harry and Tuvok's contrasting personalities and Kes' treatment of the Doctor. The episode also set up the love triangle between Tom, Kes, and Neelix, as well as the complex relationships between Chakotay and B'Elanna and Janeway and her crew.
Star Trek: Voyager set up a number of important crew relationships as early as its second episode. Although the Star Trek franchise is known for its sci-fi concepts and utopian vision of the future, one of the things that makes each project work so well is the relationship dynamics between the main cast of characters. This is true for every series but seemed to be especially true for Voyager, mainly because of its initial premise and setting.

The Doctor's relationship with Seven of Nine improved upon his friendship with Kes as Seven helped him discover his own humanity. Seven's aloof and cold demeanor initially put her at odds with the crew, but the Doctor recognized a kindred spirit in her and their friendship blossomed. Through their cooperation and understanding, Seven and the Doctor brought out the best in each other, facing both tragedy and comedy together, and their friendship endured despite challenges.
The relationship between the Doctor (Robert Picardo) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in Star Trek: Voyager, beginning in season 4, was an improvement on the Doctor's friendship with Kes (Jennifer Lien) in earlier seasons. Because Kes's true friendship with the Doctor helped him discover his own humanity, he found ways to parlay that into a similar, but far more interesting and ultimately better relationship with Seven of Nine.

The early seasons of Star Trek: Voyager showcased a gem of a friendship between the holographic Doctor and Kes that is among the best in the series. Kes' inherent compassion and natural empathy make her an excellent foil for the Doctor, allowing them both to develop independently of stereotypes others have about them. The decline of Kes' character in later seasons of Voyager can be attributed to the neglect of her friendship with the Doctor, leading to weak storylines and mischaracterization.
Star Trek: Voyager's early seasons forgot about a gem of a friendship between the holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo) and Kes (Jennifer Lien) that is among the best Star Trek has to offer. Captain Janeway's decision to kill Tuvix is a controversial moment in Star Trek: Voyager, as she ends the life of a sentient being for her own benefit. This goes against Starfleet's ideals of respecting all new life and finding peaceful solutions. The use of a radioactive isotope to separate Tuvok and Neelix's personas was a quick fix suggested by the Doctor, but it didn't give him enough time to find an alternative solution that could have saved Tuvix's life. Janeway appears wracked with guilt after making the decision to kill Tuvix, highlighting the moral complexity of the situation and adding to the controversy surrounding her actions.
The decision by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) on how to solve a problem like Tuvix (Tom Wright) is one of the biggest controversies in Star Trek: Voyager, if not the entire franchise. The Voyager episode "Tuvix" is an episode in the transporter malfunction subgenre.

Star Trek: Voyager introduced countless new alien species in the Delta Quadrant, some friendly and some enemies, expanding the Star Trek canon. The Kazon, Hirogen, Vidiians, and Species 8472 were some of the unique challenges Captain Janeway and her crew faced in their seven years in the Delta Quadrant. The Talaxians, Ocampans, Kobali, Voth, Nacene, Krenim, and Vidiians each had their own fascinating cultures and backstories, adding depth to the Star Trek: Voyager universe.
Star Trek: Voyager's exploration of the Delta Quadrant vastly expanded the Star Trek canon by introducing countless new aliens. Due to their unique circumstances, the USS Voyager and Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) conducted nearly as many First Contact missions as Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) of the USS Enterprise. Many of the alien races that Voyager encountered were friendly species who wanted to help the travelers on their treacherous journey through the Delta Quadrant.

Picardo suggested a unique relationship for The Doctor and Seven of Nine after Kes left, with The Doctor becoming her mentor in reclaiming her humanity. The Doctor saw himself as a better teacher of humanity than humans, and taught Seven of Nine how to behave appropriately using role play. Their relationship had comic potential and culminated in an episode where The Doctor falls in love with his star pupil. #StarTrekVoyager
Star Trek: Voyager's Robert Picardo explains the origin of how his character, The Doctor, fell in love with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). Picardo played The Doctor, Voyager's sentient Emergency Medical Hologram, in all seven seasons. Species 8472 were introduced in Star Trek: Voyager as the deadly aliens that scared the Borg Collective, impressing viewers with their CGI design. Captain Janeway formed an alliance with the Borg to combat the dangerous Species 8472, who had the ability to wipe out all life in their galaxy. Peace was eventually negotiated with Species 8472, but their potential return as antagonists in the Star Trek universe remains a possibility, especially with the destruction of the Borg and Starfleet's presence in the Delta Quadrant.
Species 8472 were introduced in Star Trek: Voyager season 3, billed as the Star Trek villains that were deadly enough to scare the Borg Collective. Impressed by the advances in CGI that allowed Voyager's VFX team to realize the sentient macro viral life forms in "Macrocosm", plans were made to create a pure computer-animated alien species. The Kazon were initially intended to be major antagonists in Star Trek: Voyager but failed to gain popularity and became lower-tier villains. The Kazon were a nomadic and patriarchal warrior race split into different sects, with the Kazon-Nistrim sect being the most formidable. Despite their lackluster reception, the Kazon have made occasional appearances in other Star Trek series, including Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Lower Decks.
The Kazon were the first major threat encountered by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in the pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Stranded in the Delta Quadrant, the USS Voyager went further than any of its Star Trek predecessors, making countless first contacts with all manner of species. Early species encountered were the Talaxian Neelix (Ethan Phillips) and Ocampan Kes (Jennifer Lien), who became full-time Voyager crew members and valuable guides to the uncharted territory of the Delta Quadrant. While Star Trek: Voyager remains a beloved addition to the Star Trek franchise, not all of it holds up 28 years later. Voyager was the fourth series in the franchise and part of the 1990s-era lineup that included Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Focusing on Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the crew of the USS Voyager, the show chronicled the adventures of the crew as they worked to return home after accidentally getting flung 70,000 lightyears from Earth into a region of space known as the Delta Quadrant, uncharted territory for any Starfleet ship.
Many aspects of Star Trek: Voyager are still rightly celebrated. The show was the first Star Trek series to feature a female lead as the Captain and the diversity of the main cast was unmatched by any previous series, including the greatest number of women and people of color. Voyager also...

Jennifer Lien left Star Trek: Voyager after playing Kes for three seasons, even though Kes was a central and interesting character. Premiering in 1995, Star Trek: Voyager ushered in a new generation of fans after Star Trek: The Next Generation came to an end. In a unique twist, Captain Janeway's (Kate Mulgrew) starship USS Voyager found itself lost in the Delta Quadrant, and embarked on a years-long voyage home. As Kes, Lien was a Star Trek: Voyager series regular. A member of the Ocampa species, Kes possessed telepathic abilities and was romantically involved with Neelix (Ethan Phillips) initially, before breaking off the entanglement in Star Trek: Voyager season 3.
As a young but prodigiously talented member of the Voyager crew, Kes shared certain traits with Wil Wheaton's Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Although fans didn't react with quite the same disdain as they did for poor Wes, Kes...

Despite being named Agent J's new partner in Men In Black, Linda Fiorentino's Agent L was completely omitted from Men In Black 2. Throughout the first movie, Agent L was established as smart, capable, and wholly uninterested in "normal" people. She makes for the perfect Men In Black agent, and following Agent K's retirement at the end of Men In Black she steps in as Agent J's new partner, seemingly primed for a major role in any future adventures.
That even held true in Men In Black: The Animated Series, in which Agent L (voiced by Jennifer Lien instead of Linda Fiorentino), has a significant role within the Men In Black organization for the first few seasons. When Men In Black 2 debuted, however, Agent L was merely mentioned in a throwaway line about how she wanted to return to her previous job in the medical field, and was neuralyzed.

Star Trek: Voyager's Harry Kim remained a lowly ensign over the show's entire seven-year run, must to the frustration of actor Garrett Wang. Kim was Voyager's primary operations officer after the ship was flung into the distant Delta Quadrant, over 75 years away from home. Young and inexperienced, Kim filled the role of wide-eyed space explorer previously filled by the likes of Pavel Chekov and Wesley Crusher.
After the show's first few seasons, Kim began to fade a bit as a character. Once the former Borg drone Seven of Nine joined Voyager's cast in season 4, many of the show's supporting cast suddenly felt like background characters, Kim included. Wang dutifully portrayed the diminished Ensign Kim for the show's entire seven-season run, though he did have a request for the show's writers and producers - give Harry a promotion. A trusted and important member of Captain Kathryn Janeway's senior staff, Wang thought...

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" is an endlessly enteraining show because it delights in showing off the many, many parts of "Star Trek" lore that past franchise installments never had time to explore. Sometimes, that means revisiting a kooky planet, but other times, the show digs deep into the unexplored intricacies of Starfleet life. This week's episode, "Room For Growth," sees the Cerritos crew exploring some of the lesser-known parts of their own ship, poking fun at the seemingly endless configuration of specialized rooms that have appeared in "Star Trek" ship layouts of the past.
The adventure begins when Boimler (Jack Quaid), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Tendi (Noel Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) discover that the Cerrito is having a room lottery, one that could land them some sweet, non-hallway digs where they don't have to worry about bedtime being interrupted by dramatic upper deck crew plotlines. Star Trek: Voyager hit airwaves at a time when television was a very different beast, but even considering a world that didn’t demand ratings in the same way as today’s standards would suggest, there were some serious question marks as this one progressed.
The show was obviously buoyed by the general Star Trek fan base, as well as the success of Star Trek: The Next Generation (which ended just as this one was kicking off), and the relative success of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (which started two seasons before this), but it lasted through the first couple of formative seasons largely because it was the highest rated show on upstart Upn, which had this as one of its initial offerings.
Much as everything Star Trek is bound to win people over, to some degree or another, Voyager was a pretty goofy effort for the first couple of years,...
