Tom Ripley remains one of the most enigmatic characters to ever cross from literature to both the big and small screen, with a wealth of portrayers – from Alain Delon to Andrew Scott – bringing Patricia Highsmith’s character to life. With Ripley out on Netflix, one of the stars of 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, Jude Law, has some major praise for the latest adaptation. (You can also read our own Alex Maidy’s 9/10 review here.)
Jude Law may not have played Tom Ripley (he portrayed the conned Dickie Greenleaf), but he recognizes just how good Steven Zaillian’s version is while also praising the source material. “I’ve watched at least five or six of [the episodes]…Like any great source material, it’s really rewarding and interesting to watch something from a new perspective, a new angle…I’m enjoying it…How can one not? You might think “The Line” is simply a film about illuminating the bad behavior of college fraternities and their dangerous hazing practices. You’d be wrong. Yes, that is the subject matter in question, but in the hands of first-time feature director Ethan Berger it’s a richly drawn, slow-burn character study that suddenly becomes a breathless thriller.
There’s a pivotal scene that occurs almost two-thirds of the way into the movie that marks the moment that “The Line” becomes one of the great suspense movies in some time. It’s a hazing scene in which the worst possible traits of Greek Life pledging are actually just a cover for a battle of wills between two guys who hate each other: Frat brother Mitch (Bo Mitchell) and pledge Gettys (Austin Abrams). Mitch is all “Animal House” bluster but deeply insecure — with a wealthy businessman father played by an imposing...

The character of Tom Ripley first appeared in Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley," a salacious story about a con man who is hired to locate an old school chum named Dickie Greenleaf but who ends up becoming obsessed with him, killing him, and supplanting him. Ripley is not a charming con man, but he is staggeringly clever and possesses a talent for subterfuge. He's also driven by his baser desires, unable to resist pursuing the women and men he lusts after (Ripley is likely bisexual) or stealing the money he so desperately wants. Each time, Ripley gets away with it, as evidenced by the fact that he starred in five novels published through to 1991.

Tom Ripley is back and in a big way. First introduced in Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 psychological thriller novel, Ripley is a sociopath, murderer, and con artist. He’s also the character Highsmith identified with-no wonder she wrote four more novels featuring Ripley. A 2023 New York Times article stated, “her concepts are daring, her portrayals of men in the throes of personality disorder and psychopathic leanings are equally repulsive and propulsive…she was a lesbian who identified more with men; an ardent pursuer of pleasure, especially in her youth…a raging antisemite…she could never hold on to happiness.”
Andrew Scott, the “hot priest” of “Fleabag,” is the latest actor to play the character described as having “an elusive sexuality,” in Netflix’s “Ripley,” a handsome, black-and-white limited series from Oscar-winning screenwriter/director Steve Zaillian (“Schindler’s List”).

Over the years, several of John Malkovich’s highest-grossing movies have crossed the $100 million mark at the Box Office. Regarded as one of his generation’s most accomplished actors, John Malkovich has earned a reputation as a character actor. His love for playing menacing characters has cast him in several sadistic villainy roles. However, he has also starred in several comedy subgenres. Unsurprisingly, John Malkovich earned his first Academy Award nomination with his film debut performance in the 1984 drama Places in the Heart. In one of Hollywood’s homage movies, John Malkovich played himself in Spike Jonze’s 1999 surrealist fantasy comedy-drama

Last week, the Netflix streaming service released Ripley, a limited series adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley that sees Andrew Scott taking on the title role. (You can read our review Here). Tom Ripley is a character who has been fascinating readers and viewers for decades, as he was at the center of multiple novels written by Highsmith. Ripley was originally set up Showtime, where Schindler’s List Oscar winner Steven Zaillian – who wrote and directed all eight episodes of Ripley – was planning to use all of the Ripley novels as “a road map to showcase Ripley’s transformation from con artist to serial killer” over the course of an on-going series. Now that Ripley has made its way out into the world on Netflix, Scott and Zaillian have both said that it’s possible the show could return for more seasons that could adapt more of the books…...

Apple TV’s “The New Look” tells the story of Christian Dior (Emmy champ Ben Mendelsohn) as he struggles to create a new fashion line in Paris soon after the end of World War II. He comes into conflict with the legendary designer Coco Chanel (Oscar winner Juliette Binoche). This sumptuous costume drama spares no expense and showcases these two award-winning actors.
Critics have embraced the show, too, with Angie Han (The Hollywood Reporter) calling it “handsome and heartbreaking.” Among the others giving it rave reviews:
Joyce Slaton (Common Sense Media) observed: “‘The New Look’ is a powerful and complex look at what terror and oppression does to people both ordinary and extraordinary alike; not an easy watch, but a great one.”

Tom Ripley has become a genre in himself. In 1955, author Patricia Highsmith published “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” a viciously smart psychological thriller featuring an all-time villain at its center. A small-time con artist who slithers him way into the social circle of a rich playboy he develops a consuming obsession with. Both charming and horrifying, with a thirst for wealth that’s equally as relatable as it is repulsive, Ripley burns on the page as an absolutely indelible character.
Unsurprisingly, Ripley has become the type of juicy role that actors kill to play. And that’s lead to three genuinely great adaptations of the novel. The book first found its way onto screen as “Purple Noon,” starring a prime Alain Delon as Tom Ripley. And then, of course, there’s the acclaimed 1999 adaptation from director Anthony Minghella, featuring an all-star cast led by Matt Damon as the title character with Jude Law,...

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

Netflix’s Ripley centers around the character Thomas Ripley, created by Patricia Highsmith in her 1955 book The Talented Mr. Ripley. The narrative shows how a man weaves a web of lies in search of wealth; however, in a world of lies and deception, Thomas Ripley isn’t the only man who relies on these tactics to evade the law. The character Reeves Minot is a man of similar moral inclinations. In Ripley, played by John Malkovich, Reeves has a minor role, but in the books, Reeves Minot is a rather important character as Ripley’s trustworthy partner in crime.

Who Is Reeves Minot?
Reeves Minot is a fellow American man whom Tom Ripley runs into at a party hosted by Vittorio Araldi, a local Venetian Count. Reeves is a man of a diverse skillset. What he does exactly by profession is not revealed, but then, it’s quite...

Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy is arguably the most significant for the web-slinger in live-action adaptations. It enjoyed considerable success, with each film grossing over $800 million worldwide. Raimi had ambitious plans for sequels, but ‘Spider-Man 3’ marked the end for both him and Tobey Maguire, who portrayed Spider-Man impeccably.
Unfortunately, ‘Spider-Man 3’ was widely considered the weakest of the franchise, a fact that Raimi regrets not being able to rectify. Despite the series concluding nearly two decades ago, it remains a topic of discussion, leading to the discovery of new insights into its production.
Dylan Baker is well-known for his role as Dr. Curt Connors, Peter Parker’s college professor, who played a crucial supporting role in ‘Spider-Man 3.’ In the film, Peter discovers the origin and nature of the symbiote. Back in 2007, director Sam Raimi showed interest in exploring Dr. Curt Connors’ transformation into the villainous character teased since ‘Spider-Man 2’ – The Lizard.

Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy is likely the most important for the web-slinger when it comes to live-action portrayals. It was a major success as each installment managed to gross over $800 million worldwide. It’s no secret that Raimi had plans for sequels, and many of them at that, but ‘Spider-Man 3′ marked the end for both Raimi and Maguire who embodied the role of Spider-Man so perfectly.
‘Spider-Man 3’ was by far the most weakest of the franchise, and Raimi is regretful he never managed to redeem this. The series is still talked about to this day which is why we’re learning some new tidbits about it close to 2 decades after the franchise concluded.
Dylan Baker famously played Dr. Curt Connors Peter Parker’s college professor, and he played a vital supporting role in ‘Spider-Man 3’ in which Peter figured out the origin and the nature of the symbiote.

Sam Raimi had big success with the ‘Spider-Man’ movies, each earning over $800 million worldwide. But plans for more films fell apart due to script problems. Raimi was disappointed, especially with ‘Spider-Man 3,’ and wanted to make up for it with ‘Spider-Man 4,’ but it never happened. In 2022, he wished he had ended the series on a better note.
However, Raimi stayed connected to Spider-Man. He and Marc Webb advised on Marvel Studios’ ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ Recently, rumors suggested Raimi might direct a sequel to ‘Spider-Man 3’ with Tobey Maguire. In a recent interview with Cbr, Raimi talked about those rumors.

Anne Hathaway is one of the most talented actors in the world. The Oscar-winning actress known for her performances in films like “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Les Misérables,” also had a one-off role in the superhero genre.

She took on the role of Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” But before becoming Gotham’s feline fatale, Hathaway was almost set to portray a very similar character from the Marvel universe.

John Malkovich is currently out promoting his new Apple TV series, The New Look (read our review), in which he plays Lucien Lelong, a famous French couturier, opposite Ben Mendelsohn as Christian Dior and Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel. To mark the occasion, he sat with GQ to reminisce about some of his most prominent roles, including his famous turn as Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom in Con Air, opposite Nicolas Cage.
At the time, Malkovich was working with an English author on a script they wanted to make when the script for Con Air came in. “I get this script; I see that it’s called Con Air. I look at the cast of characters and notice they’re all named after romantic poets. I take the script and fling it about fifteen meters across the kitchen.” He remembers his English novelist colleague looking at him quizzically and telling him that,...

For those of us who religiously watch “Sex and the City” on whatever platform it is currently streaming on (hi), April 1 is an exciting day. That’s the day the popular HBO series starring Sarah Jessica Parker is coming to Netflix — for the very first time. And TBS reruns this is not: This is the full, unedited, groundbreaking show, now just waiting for viewers new and old to do a Netflix binge. (Paging Gen Z!)
Of course, there are plenty of other exciting TV shows and movies hitting Netflix in April 2024. When the Apple TV+ series The New Look premiered in February, it brought with it the true stories of Paris-based fashion designers — from Christian Dior to Coco Chanel — navigating the hardships of World War II. But the show also offered a new sound by way of its Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack. The latest release from the record finds Bartees Strange reimagining the 1940s classic “You Always Hurt the One You Love.”

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than John Malkovich as the title character in Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich, for obvious reasons. While he wasn’t always inclined to star in the film, following its title, which Charlie Kaufman refused to change, Malkovich eventually agreed to lead the comedy.
Recounting his experience filming the bizarre comedy, spearheaded by director Spike Jonze, Malkovich recalled one strange note he received from the debutant director.
John Malkovich Received Cues on How He Would Act by Spike Jonze Being John Malkovich (1999)
Thoroughly impressed by Kaufman’s screenplay, despite being hesitant about starring in a film named after himself, John Malkovich eventually agreed, thanks to Francis Ford Coppola. While the future of the Anomalisa creator’s screenplay was uncertain, after Coppola got his hands on Kaufman’s work, he passed it on to Spike Jonze, who was engaged to Sofia Coppola at the time.

Michelle Pfeiffer predicted stardom for a young, unknown Keanu Reeves.
That revelation comes as director Stephen Frears joins The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast to discuss the making of his 1988 hit, Dangerous Liaisons.
The film starred Glenn Close and John Malkovich, playing conniving aristocrats in pre-French Revolution Paris who manipulate the people around them through sex and deception. Among their victims are characters played by Pfeiffer and Uma Thurman.
Reeves, then 23, was cast as Le Chevalier Danceny, a handsome musician who draws the attention of Close’s Marquise de Merteuil and falls in love with Thurman’s naive ingénue — then duels Malkovich’s Valmont for her honor.
Speaking on the podcast, Frears recalled that Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was released just months after Dangerous Liaisons, turning Reeves overnight into a major movie star.
“But when he shot, he hadn’t [yet broken out,]” Frears said. “I saw a lot of young actors [for the role] and said,...

That’s undoubtedly why Sony has tried so hard to make a Sinister Six movie happen, first in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, and then in its Spidey-less Spider-Verse with Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web. Tom Ripley is a character who has been fascinating readers and viewers for decades. Not only was he at the center of multiple novels written by Patricia Highsmith, but those novels have also received multiple adaptations: the 1960 film Purple Noon (where Ripley was played by Alain Delon), the 1977 film The American Friend (with Dennis Hopper as Ripley), the 2002 film Ripley’s Game (John Malkovich was Ripley in that one), the 2005 film Ripley Under Ground (with Barry Pepper as Ripley), a 1956 episode of the TV series Studio One, and perhaps most famously, the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley, where Ripley was played by Matt Damon. Now Andrew Scott is taking on the role for Ripley, a limited series adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley that will be released through the Netflix streaming service on April 4th – and during an interview with Empire, Scott said he didn’t judge or try to diagnose his questionable character.

In a post-All Of Us Strangers world, it’s never been clearer: Andrew Scott is one of our greatest living actors. Always prepared to bring a fresh take to something familiar and archetypal – whether it’s Moriarty in Sherlock, or one of his astounding Shakespearean performances on stage – he’s about to do it all over again with Ripley, Netflix’s new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels. It’s a role that’s been brought to the screen before, most famously by Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley – but also by the likes of John Malkovich, Dennis Hopper, and Alain Delon over the years, to name a few.
Across the eight episodes of Ripley, Steven Zaillian adapts The Talented Mr. Ripley into a cool, crisp monochrome drama. And Scott will be putting his own stamp on the titular web-weaver. “You have to be respectful, but not too reverent,...

For the first half of this weekend's new episode of "Saturday Night Live," hosted by "No Country for Old Men" and "Dune" star Josh Brolin, I couldn't stop trying to pinpoint what other performer he was reminding me of, even across a few different sketches. At first, I thought it might have been former "SNL" cast member Al Franken, specifically because of the slightly effeminate way he was portraying a couple of characters. Then it hit me: Josh Brolin rich, deep voice and his slightly off-kilter delivery style felt like the offspring of John Malkovich. Because whenever the frequently villainous John Malkovich is speaking, he's pretty much always talking like John Malkovich. There might be a slight accent every now and then, but it's pretty much always Malkovich being Malkovich. And the same can be said for Josh Brolin.
The good news is that this trait mostly works in Brolin...

If the golden era of the high school movie was the 1980s, packed with John Hughes’ tales of wistful outsider girls and horny nerds, then mid-late ‘90s was the reprise. This was the era of Valley Girls (Clueless), the make-over movie, and of course modern updates of classic literature. Cruel Intentions fits into this category and takes it to the next level. It’s a teen high school movie full of shagging and spitefulness which has genuine consequences and treats its characters like adults, while allowing them the naivety of youth. It’s 25 years old, and it’s still sexy as fuck.
Based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ which was filmed memorably as 1988’s Dangerous Liaisons, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, Cruel Intentions had wonderfully salacious material to work with but big shoes to fill.

Set in 1960s Europe, the series hinges on a core love triangle between Ripley, Dickie, and Dickie’s fiancée Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning). The Netflix show is filmed in black and white.
Elliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy, and John Malkovich round out the cast, with creator Steven Zaillian writing and directing all eight episodes. Lead actor Scott serves as a producer.
