Smart Sl*t

After a month spent tackling doppelgänger titles like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (listen) and The Stepford Wives (listen), we briefly hit pause to discuss Panic Room (listen), then went back to doubles with Disturbing Behavior. Where Baywatch's Yasmine Bleeth Is Now
Image
Yasmine Bleeth was once a major star thanks to her role on Baywatch but has since disappeared from the public eye. The 1989 Baywatch TV show, which led to the ill-advised 2017 movie, was an 11-season primetime soap opera about a team of lifeguards who patrol the beaches of California (and Hawaii in seasons 10 and 11). The guards face the expected ocean dangers such as drownings, shark attacks, and dangerous weather, but they also experience conflicts more befitting an HBO crime drama, like serial killers and thieves, all of which they end up being responsible for.

Baywatch is well known for its large ensemble, but a few actors emerged as fan favorites and became synonymous with the series. Some fans are all about David Hasselhoff as Mitch Buchannon, while others prefer Pamela Anderson as C. J. Parker. Still, others have a soft spot for Yasmine Bleeth as Caroline Holden, and those fans, like many,...

What The Cast Of John Carpenters Christine Has Done Since 1983
Image
With many decades having passed since the 1983 release of John Carpenter's Christine, it's safe to say that the movie's cast has done a lot since then. Carpenter's horror film was written by Bill Phillips, based on Stephen King's horror novel of the same name. It follows a teenage nerd named Arnie Cunningham, who becomes obsessed with his new car, the titular Christine. Like the author's other works, the story takes a dark turn, with Christine revealed to be one of Stephen King's many killer cars prevalent in his novels and short stories.

Given its focus on teenage characters, the film adaptation starred a number of young actors who were just starting out in their careers, including Alexandra Paul, John Stockwell, and Kelly Preston. While relative unknowns in 1983, they've mostly gone on to have long careers in the many years since Christine's premiere, becoming much bigger names than they...

What Is the Cast of “Baywatch” Doing Right Now?
Image
The show Baywatch has become a staple in pop culture and has received widespread popularity around the world. The series is known for its ensemble cast of actors, bright red swimsuits, running scenes, and ridiculous storylines. The highlight of the series is its ensemble cast of actors who have become prominent stars now. From David Hasselhoff to Yasmine Bleeth, many actors had their breakthrough with Baywatch. They have gone on to do a diverse range of work since the end of the series in 2001.

Michael Newman Dies: ‘Baywatch’ Actor Was 68
Image
Baywatch alum Michael Newman has died, 18 years after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Newman died “from heart complications’ on Sunday, October 20, “surrounded by his family and friends,” his friend Matt Felker, who recently directed the Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, confirmed to People.

Newman became known for his role as lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman in NBC’s Baywatch, in which he appeared in 150 episodes from 1989 to 2000. Newman was the only cast member on the show who was actually a lifeguard. He had worked as an L.A. County lifeguard for 20 years, beginning at age 10 as a Santa Monica Junior Lifeguard.

Baywatch, an action drama series about lifeguards who patrol the beaches of Los Angeles County and Hawaii, was canceled after one season on NBC but survived in syndication, eventually becoming the most-watched series worldwide with over 1.1 billion viewers. ‘Baywatch’ Doc: Alexandra Paul Says ’90s Show Was Ahead of Its Time in Giving Women Roles Equal to Men | Video
Image
Alexandra Paul, who played lifeguard Stephanie Holden on “Baywatch” from 1992 to 1997, is one of several original cast members of the much-maligned NBC drama who feels that the beach and bikini show didn’t get enough credit back in the day.

Paul reminisces about the Malibu beach series in Hulu’s four-episode docuseries “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun,” along with fellow cast members Nicole Eggert, Erika Eleniak, David Chokachi, Carmen Electra, Jeremy Jackson, Traci Bingham and Billy Warlock.

In a video interview with TheWrap, Paul said that “Baywatch” was ahead of its time for giving women’s characters equal importance as men.

“It actually was a show where the women had the exact same roles as the men. We had as many rescues as the men, we drove the boats like the men,” said Paul, citing how different that was from other ’90s movies or TV shows, where “women were...

The 10 Best Movies About Buff Women Ranked (Including Love Lies Bleeding)
Image
As /Film's resident wrestling obsessive, I've written quite a bit about how sports entertainment is a formative piece of how I process the media I consume, as well as waxing poetic about my appreciation for the Adonis and Venus mortals that walk amongst us on shows like "American Gladiator." I'm of the mindset that if a person must self-proclaim they are an expert, chances are, they are not. So while I will not claim to be an expert, I will say that my knowledge of cinema featuring pumped-up women and brawny babes is, uh, stronger than most.

Sure, there are plenty of films that feature swole ladies for a one-off visual gag or a background character, but there aren't many films that allow women who are jacked to the gills to take center stage. Sometimes, the films are specifically about these towering muscle mommies, and sometimes they're just action films...

Christine Director John Carpenter Says Bryan Fuller's Remake Will 'Probably' Be Better
Image
Legendary director John Carpenter is optimistic about Bryan Fuller improving on his adaptation of Stephen King's Christine.

In an interview with Total Film Magazine, Carpenter spoke about the Keith Gordon-led supernatural thriller about a murderous red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury in time for the original movie's 40th anniversary. Carpenter had previously discussed his dissatisfaction with Christine despite its moderate success at the box office. Now with the Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods showrunner at the helm of a Christine update for Blumhouse, Carpenter believes Fuller can improve on the original's shortcomings. "Oh boy," Carpenter said. "Well, good luck to him. It will probably be better."

Christine 40 Years Later: The Perfect Blend of Stephen King and John Carpenter
Image
People have always been fascinated by the subject of evil. Where does it come from? What forms could it take? But there are two people who understand fear better than anyone. In 1983, John Carpenter directed the film Christine based on the book by Stephen King that came out the same year. This project was the perfect blend of two top-of-their-game auteurs.

Let's take a look at Christine 40 years after its 1983 release.

When King Met Carpenter

Stephen King was at the top of his game in the early 80s. He was churning out horror novels at the most rapid-fire pace, and people loved it. The year before, he had seen the publishing of his first Dark Tower novel, The Gunslinger, which would go on to spawn one of the most successful series of the 20th century.

At the same time, John Carpenter was creating some of the most cutting-edge horror films of the time.

How A Prank On John Carpenter Made It Into The Movie Christine
Image
"Christine" actress Alexandra Paul and her twin sister pulled a prank on director John Carpenter during filming, with Caroline pretending to be Alexandra on set. The prank involved dressing up in identical clothes and makeup to be indistinguishable, fooling everyone except for Carpenter who noticed a change in Caroline's voice. The prank scene, where Caroline played her sister's character on a bulldozer, made it into the final cut, adding an unexpected and amusing bit of trivia to the film.

According to a fun behind-the-scenes trivia from John Carpenter's Christine, a prank from the horror movie's set somehow made it to its final cut. Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, Christine follows Arnie Cunningham, who buys a red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine. Little does he realize that the car is "alive," having real human emotions of possessiveness, jealousy, and hate that will gradually turn his life upside down.

Celebrities Call on Government to End Misleading Animal Tests and Commit to Better Science
Image
World Day for Laboratory Animals, Monday April 24, commemorates the suffering of animals in laboratories worldwide, where over 100 million animals are tortured and die in research and testing.

Animal Defenders International (Adi) and celebrity supporters Mena Suvari, Alexandra Paul, Dame Joanna Lumley, and Tonya Kay are calling for positive change to end the suffering and benefit human health through the adoption of advanced non-animal methods.

Latest figures show that in the US:

0.8 million animals were used in laboratories in 2021, up 6% from 2020. This excludes tens of millions of mice and rats, who are estimated to account for 95% of all experiments. Procedures were carried out on 44,978 dogs. 71,921 primates were used, including long-tailed macaques who are now endangered in the wild principally due to their use in research. The most used species recorded were guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters. 75,606 animals were used in “Category E” procedures, which involve pain. This means animals subjected to...

“Roger Corman Presents”: Remember When Corman and Showtime Made Cult Cinema Together in the 1990s?
Image
For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.

Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.

Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

We Need to Talk About Corey: ‘Halloween Ends’ Star Rohan Campbell Breaks Down His Pivotal Role in the Slasher Finale
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot points from “Halloween Ends,” which is now playing in theaters and available to stream on Peacock.

Billed as the finale to a landmark horror franchise, “Halloween Ends” was marketed with little more than the promise of a final match-up between remorseless serial killer Michael Myers and his lifelong victim Laurie Strode, played again by Jamie Lee Curtis. But many viewers were shocked to discover much more than a marquee showdown when director David Gordon Green’s horror film released last weekend. There’s also young love, a bunch of laughs and a fresh threat facing the town of Haddonfield — all courtesy of Corey Cunningham, a new character played by Rohan Campbell.

“David was so adamant on not having me on any press,” Campbell tells Variety.

When Campbell was first circling the project, he had no clue that he was auditioning for a “Halloween” film,...

Big Cat Public Safety Act Passes US House
Image
The US House of Representatives has passed (278-134) a bill to ban private possession, public contact and increase restrictions on the breeding, trade, and exploitation of big cats.

The Big Cat Public Safety Act (HR263/ S1210), sponsored by Representative Mike Quigley and Senator Richard Blumenthal, now heads to the Senate floor.

Animal Defenders International (Adi) is joined by a variety of celebrities calling on the public to support the bill, which focuses on the private ownership, trade, and breeding of certain species – it is directly aimed at backyard breeders, roadside zoos, cub petting, & photo operations – the ‘Joe Exotics’ in the US.

Captive big cats are frequently declawed, though the practice is prohibited by the Usda since 2005, and often have smashed teeth. Exhibitors rely upon physical abuse, severe confinement, and drugs to put these dangerous species in direct contact with the public, endangering both the animal and humans. This perpetuates the...

‘Tethered’: When Isolation and Abandonment Breeds Creatures
Image
Photo: ‘Tethered’ Overview Solomon (portrayed by Jared Laufree) is a completely blind boy who lives in a woodland cabin with his mother (portrayed by Alexandra Paul). His father (voiced by Chris Demm) left when he was just about eight years of age. Now he and his mother must learn to navigate their isolated lives. Solomon learns how to hunt, fish, and forage at his mother’s instruction. Though one rule stands clear – when gathering something from the forest, you must give back “one for the forest, and one for you”. We see early on as Solomon and his mother throw half a squirrel that they trapped back into the woods to “feed” them. This “ritual” is one of the three rules that Solomon must follow. Rule number one, to be specific. The second rule is to sing his and his mother’s song when he feels frightened. And the final,...

A young boy named Solomon (Brody Bett) who we quickly realize is blind and tethered to the cabin he lives in, checks animal traps with a long stick as his mother Nidia looks on. Back home she oversees his efforts to gut and clean a squirrel caught in one of them.

Years later the now grown Solomon (Jared Laufree) lives alone, his mother having vanished with no explanation. He lives alone, but still follows the three rules she drilled into his head.
