Hollywood isn’t generally going great, even for experts like Hugh Grant. Recently, he spilled the beans on feeling nervous working with three highly coveted actresses. One of them is Kate Winslet, known for her mind-blowing acting chops, who caused the 63-year-old to feel a little jittery.

Then there’s Nicole Kidman, and Meryl Streep, two more stalwart entertainers who were included along with the remaining blend of nerves. These leading women certainly had Grant feeling the strain. [Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers through Episode 4 of “The Regime.”]
Kate Winslet has only one Academy Award, but good luck telling Hugh Grant that.
Created by “Succession” writer Will Tracy, HBO’s “The Regime” is a dark political satire about an authoritarian country and its dangerously squirrely ruler. The venomous Chancellor Elena Vernham is a scene-stealing TV character who gifts Winslet ample acting opportunity.
Winslet always delivers — be it through the text-heavy speeches given to Elena’s constituency, a handful of bespoke musical theater moments (complete with flawless costumes), or the crowning jewel episode that sees Vernham meet with ex-Chancellor turned prisoner Ed Keplinger. That’s Grant.
“I’ve barely seen her for 30 years since ‘Sense and Sensibility,’ and I was a bit frightened of her now,” Grant told IndieWire; he gives a shaggily chic performance as a flirty and shifty academic with a life framed in underground dystopia. “I mean, God almighty, she’s got about 400 Oscars and is revered.

Conor McGregor: Meryl Streep’s Mma Comment Gave Me a ‘Chip on My Shoulder’ During ‘Road House’ Shoot
Conor McGregor’s villainous performance in “Road House” is one of the most successful acting debuts from a professional athlete in recent memory, but the UFC star doesn’t want his Hollywood career to overshadow what he sees as the artistry of his mixed martial arts fighting.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McGregor mentioned a comment made by Meryl Streep as she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2017 Golden Globes, in which she drew a contrast between arts and combat sports.
“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners,” Streep said in 2017. “And if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”
McGregor explained that the comment stuck with him over the years and fueled him to pour his heart into his “Road House” role when he got the opportunity to try acting.

Nicole Kidman is opening up about why she and Reese Witherspoon feel now is the time for Big Little Lies season three.
In an interview with Elle, the multi-award-winning actress confirmed that she and her co-star and fellow executive producer have been discussing where they want their stories to go in a possible third season. She also explained why time away from the show was important.
“There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives — because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating,” Kidman told the publication.
Sources familiar with the series told The Hollywood Reporter in January that Witherspoon and Kidman have an idea they are both excited about for season three and were working to put together a formal pitch for HBO.

This impeccably performed, engaging take on Kramer vs Kramer delivers a subtly shaded portrait of current gay lifestyles
This poignant drama is practically a remake of Kramer vs Kramer from 1979 – though this time with two divorcing New York-based dads fighting for custody of their kid instead of K2’s traditional pairing of a husband and wife. And like the older Dustin Hoffman-Meryl Streep vehicle, Our Son is a bit soapy and middlebrow, but impeccably performed all-round, led by a trio of terrific turns from Luke Evans and Billy Porter as the two fathers, with winning, winsome support from Christopher Woodley as Owen, their eight-year-old son.
The script, co-written by Peter Nickowitz and director Bill Oliver, delivers an acute, subtly shaded group portrait of current gay lifestyles, from married-with-children types like Nicky (Evans) and Gabriel (Porter), who are monogamous until Gabriel strays without pre-agreement into another’s man’s arms,...

She shared with Elle, “There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time [between seasons] because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives—because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating.”
Nicole added there’s “a timeline in place for making it happen with the rest of the cast—which she cheekily declines to share.”

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

We all love us some Meryl Streep, don't we? Undeniably one of the finest actress that ever lived, she has dazzled us in dozens of films with her versatility and uncanny believability in all manner of genres. She really got our attention in the late '70s and '80s playing the soft and demure leading lady in films like The Deer Hunter, Sophie's Choice, and Out of Africa. We also love her as the take-no-prisoners girl boss that she has played in The Devil Wears Prada, Don't Look Up, and The Iron Lady. And sometimes, we just want to sit back and have fun with the master actor in romps like Mamma Mia! and Postcards From the Edge. But there is one particular role that exists in her filmography that is a most notable outlier from the three types that we're used to seeing Streep tackle listed above. In...

It’s a rare type of cinephile who wasn’t introduced to the idea of film as more than just idle entertainment by the ritual of the Academy Awards. And it’s an even rarer type of cinephile who didn’t soon thereafter vehemently reject the Oscar as the ultimate barometer of a film’s artistic worth. Those of us who started off with The Godfather, Schindler’s List, All About Eve, or Casablanca all eventually got around to Out of Africa, Around the World in 80 Days, The Greatest Show on Earth, Cimarron, and Cavalcade. First loves being first loves, we still find ourselves regressing if for only one night a year, succumbing to the allure of instant canonization even as it comes in the form of repeated slap-in-the-face reminders of Oscar’s bracing wrongness: Gladiator, Braveheart, Chicago, Crash. In that sense, consider this project part cathartic exorcism and part...

Casting director Jacqui Pitman hints at the lead for The Golden Bachelorette, stating "she's amazing." Jacqui Pitman is looking for men with compassion and empathy to date the Golden Bachelorette, seeking someone with layers, great energy, and charisma. 2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...

Any great animated movie needs a talented ensemble cast to voice its characters. Some of the best include many big-name stars. Having A-list performers in an animated project always brings plenty of intrigue, even if the practice of casting them over esteemed voice actors has received its fair share of detractors. Nevertheless, when an animated film gets multiple well-known actors, more people are bound to see it in theaters.
These animated movies have several excellent elements, including stellar animation and unique storytelling. However, their stacked casts are also a major highlight. From The Lego Movie to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, these movies have some of the best casts in animation.

To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

Despite winning three Oscars, Walter Brennan isn't a household name among Hollywood icons like Meryl Streep or Daniel Day-Lewis. Brennan's popularity with extras led to his unprecedented success at the Oscars, changing the voting process for the Academy Awards. The Academy's decision to disallow extras from voting after Brennan's three wins reshaped the voting body and impacted his later career.

By delivering performances that add up to almost four and a half hours, the four acting Oscar winners of 2024 came within six minutes of setting a new academy record for highest single-year screen time average. Ultimately, they landed in fifth place with a mean of one hour, four minutes, and 57 seconds, thus becoming only the 12th winning quartet (and sixth in 10 years) to exceed 60 minutes.
Newly crowned Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) are credited with a whopping 81% of their foursome’s screen time total, respectively clocking in at 1:53:10 and 1:37:19 and outpacing all of the 2024 nominees by at least four minutes. Supporting honorees Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) gave the fourth and sixth shortest nominated performances of the year, reaching individual screen times of 23:50 and 25:29.

Since 1940, the record for highest average screen time between same-year lead acting Oscar winners has been held by Robert Donat and Vivien Leigh (“Gone with the Wind”), whose mean of one hour, 54 minutes, and 43 seconds will likely never be surpassed. Nonetheless, there is a brand new pair in second place, as 2024 Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) came within 10 minutes of dethroning the long-reigning duo. Indeed, both together and separately, their especially lengthy performances inspired several brushes with Oscars screen time history.
Murphy was specifically awarded for one hour, 53 minutes, and 10 seconds of acting work, while Stone clocked in slightly lower at one hour, 37 minutes, and 19 seconds. Understandably, each far outpaced all of their fellow nominees, respectively landing 27 and 22 minutes above their lineups’ averages. Their own average of one hour, 45 minutes, and 15 seconds makes them only the second pair of lead victors to exceed 100 minutes.

It's cliché to say "what can't Meryl Streep do?" The three-time Academy Award winner (and most oscar-nominated actor) has sustained a career for nearly 50 years, ranging from dramas to comedies to musicals, and at least one animated film. Nowadays, she has taken a break from movies (or at least ones that get her Oscar nominations) and can be seen getting laughs and cozying up to Martin Short in the latest season of Only Murders in the Building. Streep appearing in a comedy is certainly not shocking, considering she received an Oscar nomination for The Devil Wears Prada and appeared in comedies like Mamma Mia!, It's Complicated, Ricki and the Flash, Mary Poppins Returns, and Don't Look Up. But for a time it seemed unlikely.

"This is James Stewart in Rear Window. This is the guy." Greenwich Ent. has debuted an official trailer for Uncropped, a documentary film about a photographer. From the same filmmaker behind The Booksellers doc, this one is also about a New Yorker. The film premiered at Doc NYC last year and will open in very limited theaters starting in April. Alfred Hitchcock. Muhammad Ali. Meryl Streep. LL Cool J. Photographer James Hamilton has captured them all. In Uncropped, a legendary Village Voice photojournalist recounts the stories behind iconic images taken over the course of a five-decade career. A visual chronicle of New York City and a window into the heyday of alternative print media. The film rediscovers the work of Village Voice photojournalist James Hamilton, one of the great chroniclers of America's cultural history. It's also executive produced by Wes Anderson (who makes an appearance in this trailer praising James' work). This looks fantastic!
