How TV Cop Shows Are Tackling Police Brutality Storylines Post-George Floyd

How TV Cop Shows Are Tackling Police Brutality Storylines Post-George Floyd
During Hollywood’s Summer of Racial Reckoning, the portrayal of police and law enforcement on screen was put under the microscope.

The simmering tensions against the people entrusted to protect and serve their communities boiled over amid nationwide protests against police brutality and systemic racism, following George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer. It has included calls for the police to be defunded or reimagined, and for Hollywood to question how fictional cops should patrol the screen.

Now, some cop TV shows including CBS’ “S.W.A.T.” and NBC’s “Law & Order: Svu” and “Chicago Pd” are returning for their new seasons, often following extended production delays due to the pandemic. And many plan to dive head-first into the new environment surrounding law enforcement.

S.W.A.T.” returns Wednesday with a two-hour premiere, the first hour of which was supposed to be last season’s finale. Like most TV shows, “S.W.A.T.

What to Expect from Chicago Pd Season 8

What to Expect from Chicago Pd Season 8
It’s been seven months since we last caught up with the members of Intelligence on Chicago Pd.

Since Episode 20, the world has changed quite drastically with the onset of a global pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement protesting police brutality.

Understandably, this brings into question our favorite police procedural. How will the series handle the unavoidable new realities?

Here’s everything we know as we gear up for Chicago Pd Season 8!

Police Reform

Tackling police brutality is going to be more of an uphill battle for Chicago Pd as Intelligence is known to cross lines and boundaries in the name of justice.

As times are changing, the show needs to address this very real issue. Showrunner Rick Eid told TVInsider that police reform will be at the forefront of the season and it boils down to Sgt. Voight, who has a reputation of being a bit of a “corrupt cop.

‘Chicago P.D.’ Actor Jason Beghe Says Season 8 Will Further Address Police Brutality & Racism: “We’re Trying To Be Useful”
Chicago P.D. star Jason Beghe said that following the murder of George Floyd and the nationwide Black Lives Matter movement, the NBC series will touch on issues of police brutality and racism in the upcoming season.

“I think we feel a certain sense of responsibility to address these issues, which is fun and challenging. Thankfully we have some good writers and good advisers,” Beghe told Julian McMahon during a session of Wolf Entertainment’s Unscripted YouTubeseries. “I’m really proud of our first scripts, I hope they’re not only entertaining. We’re trying, without being grandiose, to be useful.”

Beghe told the FBI actor that given the amount of time between the unintentional season 7 finale in April, the Chicago P.D. cast and writers have held conversations with each other, advisors and even police officers about how to address police brutality and racism on screen. The longer-than-expected break allowed the Chicago P.

Nicole Ari Parker Joins ‘Chicago P.D’ In Key New Role As Cop Drama Tackles Police Reform In Season 8
Exclusive: Empire alumna Nicole Ari Parker is joining NBC’s Chicago Pd for a major recurring role on the upcoming eighth season of the Dick Wolf drama series. She will play Deputy Superintendent Samatha Miller. From Atlanta originally, Miller is a progressive, ardent proponent of police reform. She wants to help Voight (Jason Beghe) and Intelligence adapt to the new reality, but will not tolerate breaches of the new police guidelines and protocols.

Cop shows came under scrutiny for their depiction of police work in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, which triggered nationwide protests against police brutality. The topic is expected to be addressed by most — if not all — cop shows in their upcoming seasons. Chicago P.D.‘s central character Detective Sergeant Hank Voight (Beghe) has been among those singled out for his violent methods that include breaking fingers with pliers and putting guns in the mouths of criminals.
