When your favorite TV show ends, you can feel like mourning. Sometimes, though, a show has gone on for so long that there's nothing left for it to do except to end. That was where "Smallville" was in 2011, when it began its 10th and final season on the CW.

"Smallville" followed a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) during his high school years. Running storylines included Clark's relationship with girl next door Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) and his friendship with future nemesis, Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum). Along the way, the show included a monster of the week formula where Clark battled people given superpowers from Kryptonite — "Smallville" was very consciously "Superboy" by way of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer."

In Friday’s episode of Dexter: Original Sin, our titular killer with a code experiences some normal, non-murdery feelings when a child — Judge Powell’s abducted son Jimmy — is sadly found dead, his body strung from a bridge.

Dexter has a panicked, sickened feeling after seeing his first dead kid, and the whole experience shakes him to his core. Harry assures his son that it’s a good thing that Dexter feels so spun by the sight of a dead child. So while Miami Metro deals with the Powell case, Harry sends Dexter to another scene dealing with a dead prostitute.

When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who wasn't sold on the movie at first), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Larisa Oleynik were the film's core four, but the supporting cast was rounded out by actors like Gabrielle Union, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Allison Janney, and everyone delivers a fun performance. The contemporary movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "The Taming of the Shrew," setting the romantic comedy at a modern high school instead of the olden days. It's about a pretty girl named Bianca (Oleynik) who isn't allowed to date until her uptight older sister Kat (Stiles) is taken; as a result, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) pays the rambunctious Patrick (Ledger) to woo Kat. Hijinks ensue.

Fans of Showtime’s “Dexter” series are noticing that Sergeant James Doakes isn’t in “Dexter: Original Sin,” the new spinoff. The show takes place in 1991 before Doakes started working at the Miami Metro Police Department, so he is not there.

The series is about Dexter Morgan when he was younger and shows how he started as a forensic expert and a vigilante killer. While many characters from the original series are back, including Angel Batista, Vince Masuka, and Maria Laguerta, Sergeant Doakes is noticeably absent. He is known for his intense attitude and suspicion of Dexter.

Based on the show’s timing, Doakes could still be in the US Army Rangers or just starting as a police officer somewhere else during “Original Sin.” The third episode of the series introduces Maria Laguerta, who transfers to Miami Metro and shows that important new employees are still coming to the department.

The Dexter universe is growing larger by the second. Dexter: Original Sin is currently telling the origins of the young serial killer, but another prequel series could soon follow. Deadline reports that a prequel series revolving around the Trinity Killer (played by John Lithgow in the original series) is still “in development” at Paramount+.

The Trinity Killer prequel series was actually reported to be in condition in early 2023, but it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about it. Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and Dexter writer/producer Scott Reynolds will serve as co-creators and executive producers of the Trinity Killer prequel series. Phillips even revealed that John Lithgow has agreed to come back and provide the inner voice of his younger self, much in the same way Michael C. Hall is doing for Dexter: Original Sin.

The drama series, which comes from showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips, is also the most socialed premiere for the network ever, with 657,000 interactions.

The title for Showtime’s most-streamed premiere was previously held by “Yellowackets” Season 2, which brought in 1.3 million viewers in its debut last year.

Dexter: Original Sin seems like it’s off to a killer start.

The series premiere racked up 2.1M global viewers across Paramount+ and Showtime in the first three days of availability, according to Paramount Global.

The company also says it Showtime’s most-streamed premiere ever, although it didn’t specify how much of that audience came from streaming.

Dexter: Original Sin debuted on Friday, December 13 with one episode on Paramount+ before its cable premiere on Sunday evening. Episode rollout will continue that way with two new episodes streaming this Friday. This data encompasses viewership from Friday through Sunday.

Paramount certainly seems happy with this number, which is really all that matters, but it’s difficult to say whether this is an outright win, as the company shares data pretty sparingly.

It certainly seems promising for Showtime, specifically. Consider that the Season 2 premiere of Yellowjackets, which had the same streaming-to-linear rollout strategy,...

In the wake of Paramount+’s Dexter prequel series, Sarah Michelle Gellar says she is now open to reviving Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

“I always used to say no [to a reboot], because [Buffy is] in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said Saturday during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. “But watching [And Just Like That…] and seeing [Dexter: Original Sin], and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.'”

After previously shutting down the idea, Sarah Michelle Gellar said she is now open to returning to the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” universe.

In an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Gellar shared that she has been considering reprising her role as Buffy in a potential project.

“I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said on the talk show. “But watching ‘[And Just Like That…]’ and seeing ‘[Dexter: Original Sin],’ and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

Gellar added that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” would not necessarily need to be relegated to a prequel either, and that there could be a wealth of different narrative options to pursue.

“It could be anything,” Gellar added. “It’s a universe. It makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.

While discussing her role in the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, the Golden Globe nominee admitted she can now see how returning to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe could work.

“Dexter: Original Sin” brings fans back to the serial killer they all know and (perhaps worth examining) love, but he’s wearing a different face this time around.

No, not literally. Dexter Morgan isn’t that kind of psychopath. He just has urges to kill people, and in the prequel series now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime (premiering on-air on Showtime this Sunday), we see how he learns to deal with those urges, and implement the Code that his father creates for him to do it somewhat safely.

There are plenty of characters you’ll recognize in the series, but all new faces, so let’s run them down, shall we?

The creative minds behind the Dexter canon have taken longtime fans on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. After a disappointing and nonsensical series finale to the original Showtime series, viewers turned to the 2021 reboot, New Blood, which mostly failed to take off. Now, Dexter loyalists have Dexter: Original Sin, which promises an origin-story prequel full of nods to the original.
