The 2025 BAFTA nominations had its share of snubs and surprises, some less so than others (Denzel Washington missing again is just par for the course now). The final televised precursor — and an industry one to boot — made the acting categories even messier while ostensibly taking other contenders out of the running. Here’s where we’re at with all four races post-bafta nominations.
Best Actor
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, SAG and BAFTA nominations: Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG nominations: Daniel Craig (Queer)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and BAFTA nominations: Hugh Grant (Heretic)
Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations: Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice)
Assuming the top four are in — as many have all season, and the quartet has not missed a beat — that leaves one spot up for grabs. Craig has occupied that spot in the odds all season long,...

Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Send up the white smoke, people.
Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her new life. The film is nominated in 11 categories. Audiard is nominated for Director, while the film itself is up for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language. Emilia herself, Karla Sofía Gascón, is up for Leading Actress, with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña...

• Conclave blessed while Kidman shut out
These Bafta nominations have given us the traditional buffet of snubs for industry observers to frown at. Nothing at all for Luca Guadagnino’s tremendous drama Queer – its exuberant leading turn from Daniel Craig passed over. Nothing for the very moving Irish film Small Things Like These and so no Bafta nod for Cillian Murphy’s outstanding (arguably career-best) performance there. The appetite for Yorgos Lanthimos films starring Emma Stone seems to be maxed out. Nothing for their film Kinds of Kindness.
But one much-feared possible exclusion thankfully did not materialise: Marianne Jean-Baptiste has a best actress nomination for her superb performance in Mike Leigh’s blistering study of depression, Hard Truths, though no director nomination for Leigh himself.

The 2025 BAFTA Film nominees were announced this morning but there was no recognition for high profile movies such as Queer, Challengers, Babygirl, and Paddington In Peru. Meanwhile, musical Wicked was shut out of the Best Film category.
Luca Guadagnino’s duo Queer and Challengers were both Golden Globe nominated, including for leads Daniel Craig and Zendaya, but neither made the cut this morning. Both had made the BAFTA longlist.
Nicole Kidman won a best actress award at Venice and was also Golden Globe nominated but couldn’t woo the BAFTA crowd for her performance in steamy drama Babygirl.

The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in – here’s a look at the snubs and the snub-ies.
With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.
It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.
Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

Blessed be Edward Berger, whose Vatican drama Conclave is now officially the front-runner in this year’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations.
The Ralph Fiennes- and Stanley Tucci-starring film, based on the novel by Robert Harris, leads the way with 12 BAFTA nominations — ahead of Emilia Pérez‘s 11 and The Brutalist‘s nine, as unveiled by actors Will Sharpe and Mia McKenna-Bruce from the British Academy’s headquarters in London mid-day on Wednesday.

Updated: Tuesday, Jan. 14 with Portland Critics Association and Houston Film Critics Society winners.
Since her victory at the Golden Globes, Demi Moore has earned six Best Actress prizes, including five consecutively, most recently from Portland. The haul has brought her precursor total to 12, just one shy of Marianne Jean-Baptiste‘s 13 thus far. Did her Globe win for The Substance and moving speech give her a boost? Well, Moore, who was also nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award last week,...

A24’s The Brutalist busted out in limited expansion this weekend with close to $1.39 million on just 68 screens, a $20.4k per screen average, excellent for a period film with a three hour and 35-minute run time about a Hungarian architect in 1950s Doylestown, Pa. It won multiple Golden Globes — for Best Picture – Drama, Best Actor for Adrien Brody and Best Director — last Sunday.
This is another fine indie weekend as Hard Truths by iconic filmmaker Mike Leigh saw $165k at 22 theaters, a strong opening, despite severe weather in the south and the ongoing fire crisis in LA.
The Last Showgirl rounded out the top 10 on its debut weekend.
Holdovers Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown and Babygirl are at nos. 4, 6 and 8 respectively.
Indie distributors are now wondering if arthouses that gravitated to wide-release studios films since Covid may want to rethink.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for the new film “Hard Truths,” written and directed by notable British filmmaker Mike Leigh (“Happy-Go-Lucky’), an urgent character study on how one woman’s angry depressive state affects her entire family. In select theaters since January 10th. See local listings
Pansy (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) is the mother in a family of three, including her husband Curtley (David Webber) and adult son Moses (Tuwaine Barrett). Pansy is constantly angry or withdrawn, lashing out at her family and her loyal sister Chantelle (Michele Austin). Her anger is a poison in the well of her relationships, and as she slides further down the depressive rabbit hole … exacerbated by a visit to her dead mother’s grave … she risks all of her relationships.
”Hard Truths” is in select theaters since January 10th. See local listings. Featuring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, David Webber, Tuwaine Barrett, Michele Austin and Jonathan Livingstone.

With “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” (Lionsgate), Gerard Butler displayed his bona fides as one of the most reliable draws for action releases. Opening at #1 with $15.5 million, it came in a little ahead of projections and led #2 “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Disney).
A routine sequel exceeding expectations is good news early in the year. It slightly improved on the original’s January 2018 opening (at perhaps 20 percent lower ticket prices). The first one had enough word of mouth to triple its first weekend and gross $45 million; the $40 million sequel has a chance to repeat that.
That said, the 2018 film was #3 for its weekend. Last year, this weekend had two debuts — “Mean Girls” and “The Beekeeper” — both of which grossed more than “Pantera.”
The calendar is a significant factor. In many years, including 2023, the second weekend in January is ahead of the Martin Luther King Birthday, a four-day holiday that encourages the first wave of major releases.

The title of Mike Leigh’s latest movie, “Hard Truths,” suggests a remarkable, career-spanning consistency, tracing back to the stage and screen director’s 1971 big-screen debut, “Bleak Moments.”
For more than half a century, Leigh has been bringing audiences into the lives and homes of British citizens of various backgrounds and classes, developing original projects through a unique workshopping process whereby the actors have a hand in creating the characters they play.
“Hard Truths” builds upon the humanistic director’s signature method, reuniting him with Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Michele Austin. The pair first played sisters in Leigh’s 1993 play “It’s a Great Big Shame” and close friends in his Palme d’Or-winning feature “Secrets & Lies” (1996). Their work on this film has been earning them acting kudos far and wide, with Jean-Baptiste scoring top honors from the New York, Los Angeles and Chicago critics groups.

A time like now, as fires rage around Los Angeles, makes awards season start to feel just a little more insignificant than, in the grand scheme, it already is. This week, events like the AFI luncheon and Critics Choice Awards ceremony were postponed. So were the Oscar nominations themselves, moved from Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19, with voting extended to January 14 to give people extra time to fill in their ballots. Will that matter, and is that what people in Hollywood really care about right now?
These are questions we ask on the latest episode of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast before diving into a debate and speculation around how a flurry of awards nominations and wins coming in from the past week will impact the Oscars. The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations left out Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. The Directors Guild of America award nominations went...

Wildfires rampaging through Los Angeles means moviegoing won’t be top of mind for Angelenos. Some top indies are opening or holding over in L.A. theaters, one of the nation’s key movie markets, amid uneven fire patterns that have scorched and flattened huge areas of the city but left others untouched.
“In West Hollywood, the sun is shining. You can’t really tell. Except for some ash that falls on your car, you can’t really tell what’s happening,” says Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions, which is releasing Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl starring Pamela Anderson in moderate release on 870 screens nationwide, including 20+ L.A. theaters.
“I have mixed emotions opening in the middle of all this. It’s been such a great run with Pamela and Gia and Jamie Lee [Curtis] and the whole group. It’s hard to celebrate. We canceled the premiere on Thursday.

“I think Anora is a great film, I really do,” the legendary English filmmaker Mike Leigh told The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast this week while promoting his new film, Hard Truths. “I think it’s massively impressive.”
Leigh, a seven-time Oscar nominee whose films have won the top prizes of the Cannes and Venice film festivals, went on to say of American Sean Baker’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner, which centers on a stripper (Mikey Madison) who gets romantically involved with a wealthy Russian customer with mob ties, “Their performances are solid and there’s no self-indulgent tricks in it,” adding, “At first you think, ‘Okay, right, there’s all this sex going on and these kids and blah, blah, blah.’ Then you think, ‘Well…’ And then the shit hits the fan.”
Summarized Leigh: “Boy, it’s really good.”

The British cinema––indeed an entire strand of understanding around modern drama––does not exist without Mike Leigh. When it was learned some years ago that Leigh was struggling to obtain financing for a new film, the outrage among cineastes was commensurate with little else, I think in large part for how much he alone represents the fabled, ever-threatened “movies for adults,” to say nothing of how distinctly they’re created, how distinct their effects.
There’s thus an occasion around today’s release of Hard Truths, which debuted on the fall-festival circuit and receives a proper opening after last month’s Oscar-qualifying run. Leigh was in town to present both the film and Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s deserved win for Best Actress at this year’s NYFCC gala. Meeting in a large, sterile hotel room the likes of which aren’t often seen in his films, we sat to discuss Hard Truths,...

Is Fernanda Torres safe for an Oscar nomination now? Is Cynthia Erivo as high as second in the Best Actress race? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week on Awards Magnet.
Since her upset Best Drama Actress win at the Golden Globes for I’m Still Here, Torres has cracked the Best Actress Oscar top five, rising from eighth place in the odds. Normally, the Globe drama winner would be a shoo-in for the Oscar nomination, but this is a weird year in which the top Best Actress contenders are all on the Globes’ comedy/musical side in probable Best Picture nominees. The drama hopefuls are rather weak, and some could be lone nominees. Torres likely wouldn’t be one as I’m Still Here looks solid for a spot in the international feature lineup. She also has master...

There are never enough slots in an Oscar lineup. For performers in films that haven’t been seen by enough voters, breaking through the hustle and bustle of awards season is nearly impossible. Enter a few reminders for voters to watch these six standout performances, each deserving a place in the conversation before ballots are cast.
Michele Austin – “Hard Truths” (Supporting Actress)
In Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths,” Michele Austin shines as Chantal, a single mother and hairdresser, trying to bridge an emotional chasm between herself and her depressed sister, Pansy (Marianne Jean-Baptiste). Austin brings warmth and empathy to the role, offering a vibrant, hopeful counterpoint to her sister’s unrelenting bitterness. Her nuanced performance captures people’s helplessness when someone they love is in crisis. It’s an unforgettable turn in an intimate character study filled with moments of unexpected joy.

Everyone has a Pansy Deacon in their life, or has at least encountered someone a lot like her at their job, a get-together, or simply railing against something or someone in a public place. She’s the type of person to find a storm cloud behind every silver lining, to see every glass of water as half full yet also containing an abundance of flesh-eating bacteria. When she unleashes a tsunami of accusations and verbal abuse on whatever her target is — her family, a salesperson, an unlucky someone stuck behind...

It’s amazing watching Mike Leigh’s film Hard Truths, starring the extraordinary Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Michele Austin, in an American theater.
Another layer is added as audience members, mostly women at the regular afternoon screening I attended, engaged in the story of two sisters who are the complete antithesis of each other.
Jean-Baptiste’s Pansy is pernickety, house-proud, and after we’ve had our laugh at her, it’s evident that she’s in so much psychological pain, breaking down before our eyes. Austin’s Chantelle, a hairdresser, is more outgoing, more Happy-Go-Lucky, to borrow the title of one of Leigh’s movies.
I loved hearing folk in the cinema sucking their teeth at Pansy’s antics and cooing with approval when Chantelle braided hair. It was comforting, like being in the presence of my, now long gone, judgmental Nigerian aunties.

Mike Leigh, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the greatest English filmmakers of all time. He has written, in his own way, and directed, films for screens both big and small, which have been massively acclaimed and influential, for more than a half-century. Among them: 1976’s Nuts in May, 1977’s Abigail’s Party, 1980’s Grown-Ups, 1983’s Meantime, 1993’s Naked, 1996’s Secrets & Lies, 2004’s Vera Drake, 2008’s Happy-Go-Lucky and, most recently, 2024’s Hard Truths.
Leigh’s films have won the top prizes of both the Cannes and Venice film festivals, something no other Brit has ever been able to claim. He personally was awarded an OBE in 1993, BAFTA’s Michael Balcon lifetime achievement award in 1996 and a BAFTA fellowship in 2014. And he has been nominated for seven Oscars.
The British Film Institute has called Leigh “the great humanist of British cinema.

Coming into a new year usually brings clarity. But when it comes to the Oscar race — to quote novelist William Goldman — nobody knows anything. Academy Award nominations will be announced Jan. 17 and voting is currently underway. Judging by the Golden Globe Awards Sunday, a number of winners have brought their possible Oscar nominations into focus. But at the end of the day, how reliable are precursors anyway? After all, we all know the Oscars do their own thing. So, without being influenced by other voting parties, here’s a guess at where the race seems to stand.

The SAG Awards’ 2025 nominations have not made an already up-in-the-air Oscar race much clearer.
While there was much anticipation that “Wicked” would fare well with the voting body composed of Screen Actors Guild members, star Jonathan Bailey being nominated for Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture is not something that was on too many people’s radars.
Even more of a curveball are the nominations for “The Last Showgirl” stars Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis, even if hindsight being 20/20, it has been evident how well liked the pair are by their peers. Remember, the SAG Awards are what teed up Curtis to win her Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” in what was a close race between her, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett, and “The Banshees of Inisherin” breakout Kerry Condon.

The Oscar nomination voting began Wednesday morning, and almost 10,000 Academy members must choose nominees from a large and competitive pool. This awards season is very uncertain because there isn’t a clear favorite like there has been in the past.
The voting started at the same time that the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations were made public, making the race even more complicated. ” Wicked got five SAG nominations, which put it in first place. In recent years, films like Oppenheimer and Everything, Everywhere, All at Once were early favorites, but this year’s competition is still very close.

As much of Los Angeles burns, it’s hard to think of anything else. But this morning, as Oscar nominations voting opened, SAG-AFTRA announced its nominees for the 31st SAG Awards, so we might as well take a look at what and who the acting guild’s nominating committee — made up of 2,500 members selected from the overall membership of some 160,000 — chose to highlight and ignore.
Not surprisingly, the guild, which leans more populist than most other awards groups, wholeheartedly embraced two acclaimed blockbusters: Universal’s Broadway adaptation Wicked, with a field-leading five noms (including one for stunts!), and Searchlight’s Bob Dylan drama A Complete Unknown, with four. Both films’ tallies included multiple individual acting noms — including far-from-assured noms for supporting actor Jonathan Bailey for the former, and supporting actor Edward Norton and supporting actress Monica Barbaro for the latter — as well as noms for best ensemble, which many treat...

At long last, six years after Peterloo, the legendary Mike Leigh is back with one of the very best films of the year. Hard Truths––which we named one of our top 10 films of 2024 and crowned Marianne Jean-Baptiste with the best performance of the year–– will finally be arriving in theaters beginning this Friday following its December awards-qualifying run. Ahead of Bleecker Street’s release, we’re delighted to premiere gorgeous new artwork for the piercing, exquisite drama, designed by Desi Moore.
Naming it one of my top 10 films of 2024, I said, “As a Peterloo appreciator, Mike Leigh never left, but it’s certainly nice to have him return to his smaller-scale character study roots with Hard Truths. Unequivocally giving the performance of the year, Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s weathered, worn, and troubled Pansy is against the world––this includes her husband, son, friends, and any acquaintance and stranger that gets in her path.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are always good for a significant surprise or two, and this year’s SAG Awards nominations were no different. On Wednesday, as the Screen Actors Guild announced its contenders for 2025 honors in film and television, several big names were rewarded — including Wicked, A Complete Unknown, and Emilia Perez — while some were left ignominiously behind. Ahead, the biggest snubs and surprises at this year’s SAG Awards.
Snub: Angelina Jolie (Maria) in Best Actress
Jolie’s Oscar candidacy has taken some serious hits over the last several days, and her snub by the Screen Actors Guild is the latest tough blow following her BAFTA Awards longlists omission and loss at the Golden Globes. The Maria star can still receive an Oscar nomination, of course – the BAFTA Awards and SAG Awards similarly snubbed Kristen Stewart, but she was still ultimately an Oscar nominee. But Jolie’s journey...

Recent Golden Globe winner Demi Moore strengthened her chances at an Oscar nomination with her lead performance nod Wednesday morning for “The Substance.” Pamela Anderson followed up her Golden Globe nomination with another surprise one for her lead performance in “The Last Showgirl.” In that highly competitive best actress category, notable snubs included Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”), Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”) and Golden Globe winner...

We should have a handle on the Academy Awards race now, right? The new year is upon us, the Golden Globes have already happened, the critics groups have chimed in and Oscar voting begins on Wednesday and runs through Sunday evening, ending sometime in the middle of the Critics Choice Awards.
But in an awards season that was supposed to be the one that got back to normal – no pandemic, no strikes! – plenty of things are still unsettled. So here are a few things worth keeping in mind about this season as it marches toward the Jan. 17 announcement of Oscar nominations and, eventually, the Academy Awards on March 2.

Today, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) announced the winners of its 18th annual awards. The event was held to honor an important year for women in film. “The Brutalist,” directed by Brady Corbet, won the prestigious award for Best Film. After recently winning three Golden Globes, Corbet’s film has gained momentum this awards season.
It was hard to choose a winner because “The Brutalist” beat strong contenders like “Anora,” “Conclave,” and “Wicked.” Coralie Fargeat, on the other hand, had a great night. Her film “The Substance” won several awards. She won Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, beating well-known writers like Sean Baker, Jesse Eisenberg, and Mike Leigh.
AWFJ president Jennifer Merin said of this year’s winners, “2024 was an exceptional year with so many women playing major creative roles in high-profile projects.” She added, “We are thrilled that this year’s AWFJ Eda Awards honor women...
