While Martin Scorsese aims to kick off production on his Jesus film this year, Terrence Malick is going on year five of editing his, marking one of the only films to wrap production pre-pandemic that still has yet to be released. As so happens every year before the Cannes Film Festival announces its lineup, rumors have swirled that the director’s Biblical epic The Way of the Wind (formerly known as The Last Planet) may see a premiere in 2024. We will, unfortunately, have to wait another year, but in the meantime we have exclusive new details on the highly anticipated project.

Is there a more underrated actor in Indian cinema than Randeep Hooda? Opportunities to prove his heavy mettle seldom come his way. But when given a meaty role, Hooda lets us know what divides the men from the boys.
In Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Hooda not only proves himself an able if somewhat self-indulgent director, but he also portrays one of the unsung founding fathers of Azad Bharat, the man and leader who dared to call out Mahatma Gandhi for his sometimes-myopic view of secularism.
Indeed, one of the highlights of this remarkable bio-pic are the dialogues between a benign Gandhi (played with a slightly smug self-love by Rajesh Khera) and an aggressive Savarkar. Gandhians may not agree with the portrayal of Gandhi as an incorrigible peacenik. Good films do that: they force open uncomfortable debates.

Actors are drawn to biopics like moths to a particularly bright, often gold-tinted flame because it allows them to test their impressionistic mettle, to inhabit the real life of someone who’s often larger than life, to chart how an extraordinary human being is transformed into an emblem of their moment. Audiences are drawn to biopics because we love actors, or at the very least we like seeing them trying to fill the shoes of these renowned figures and find the person beneath the symbolic purpose, shouted slogans, and prosthetic schnozzes.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has given birth to a number of fan theories through decades, from which only a few were later confirmed. Since MCU began connecting universes in the superhero genre, with Robert Downey Jr.’s 2008 Iron Man, the franchise simply continued expanding and creating new stories and theories.

MCU’s connected universes simply offered viewers the opportunity to come up with theories on how some movies, characters, and events are connected. One of the most controversial twists that ended up being a theory of its own was spotted in Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man 3. Surrounding the story of The Mandarin, the movie created a major mistake that gave birth to a fan theory, which had to be later corrected by another hit film.

When the character Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne) made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut back in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the idea was that we’d be seeing the character again the following year in her own Disney+ show Ironheart… but 2023 came and went without Ironheart, and the show still doesn’t have an official premiere date. This has caused some fans to speculate that Marvel and Disney+ might have decided to scrap Ironheart, along with the series Wonder Man, which had Yahya Abdul-Mateen II taking on the role of the title character, who is also known as Simon Williams and hasn’t been seen in the MCU yet. But no, Ironheart and Wonder Man are not being scrapped, and in a new interview with Agents of Fandom, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum described the shows as spectacular, amazing, and different.

Since the inception of the Academy Awards, the U.S.-based organization behind them has always strived to honor worldwide film achievements. Their extensive roster of competitive acting winners alone consists of artists from 30 unique countries, three of which first gained representation during the 2020s. The last full decade’s worth of triumphant performers hail from eight countries, while 42.1% of the individual actors nominated during that time originate from outside of America.
The academy’s history of recognizing acting talent on a global scale dates all the way back to the inaugural Oscars ceremony in 1929, when Swiss-born Emil Jannings (who was of German and American parentage) won Best Actor for his work in both “The Last Command” and “The Way of All Flesh.” Over the next three years, the Best Actress prize was exclusively awarded to Canadians: Mary Pickford (“Coquette”), Norma Shearer (“The Divorcee”), and Marie Dressler (“Min and Bill...

As shown by an MCU fan on Reddit, every MCU movie released so far features at least one Oscar winner, except for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Robert Downey Jr.'s 2024 Oscar win retroactively gives Avengers: Age of Ultron its only Academy Award winner. The MCU continues to attract top-tier actors, with upcoming Phase 5 projects featuring Oscar-nominated performers such as Hugh Jackman, Harrison Ford, Florence Pugh, and Mahershala Ali.
A surprising MCU statistic shows the impressive amount of A-list talent Marvel Studios has amassed throughout the years, revealing how every movie in the franchise has had at least one Oscar winner, except for one Phase 5 installment. Throughout the McU's 16-year history, dozens of accomplished performers have joined the franchise, including multiple actors who have won Oscars for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor, either before or after their MCU debut. The promotion comes on the back of founders Stuart Ford, chairman and CEO, and Miguel Palos, chief operating office, themselves signing new multi-year agreements late last year.
Since AGC launched in 2018, it has become one of Hollywood’s leading production and financing players, with 41 major film and TV productions under its belt.
In a statement, Ford and Palos said Diaz had been a “hugely influential contributor to the company’s explosive growth.”

One of the sub-genres that fans love in the fantasy realm is dragon stories. Netflix is tapping into this with Millie Bobby Brown's Damsel, where she plays Princess Elodie, a young woman forced to fight off a dragon she was offered up to as a sacrifice.

Oscar winners have starred in video game movies to boost their appeal, showing a unique intersection of film genres. Angelina Jolie's iconic role as Lara Croft made her a top actress, proving female-led action movies can be box office hits. Ben Kingsley and Marion Cotillard also added prestige to video game movies, showcasing the diverse talents of Oscar-winning actors.
An Oscar is the highest honor an actor can achieve. It takes a performance that will forever live on in the memories of viewers. Many great actors have been nominated for "Best Actor," "Best Actress," "Best Supporting Actor," and "Best Supporting Actress," but few have gotten over the hump by winning the prestigious award.

Wes Anderson Shares What His Oscar Acceptance Speech Would Have Been, And Why He Couldn't Deliver It
During this year's Academy Awards, at least one longstanding wrong was finally righted. Even as someone who's generally found Wes Anderson's work to be somewhat hit or miss, it's always felt like a serious oversight that the acclaimed filmmaker had yet to win a single Oscar. You're telling me the guy behind "The Royal Tenenbaums," "Moonrise Kingdom," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," and "The French Dispatch" could only muster a grand total of seven nominations over the course of 20+ years? Poppycock, I say!
Well, that ignominious streak finally ended this past Sunday. But while Anderson's long-overdue win came in the live-action short film category for "The Wonderful Life of Henry Sugar," he wasn't even in attendance to accept his award. Some viewers may have interpreted his absence as an intentional thumbing of the nose towards a voting body that hasn't exactly shown him much love over the decades, but...

Since 1940, the record for highest average screen time between same-year lead acting Oscar winners has been held by Robert Donat and Vivien Leigh (“Gone with the Wind”), whose mean of one hour, 54 minutes, and 43 seconds will likely never be surpassed. Nonetheless, there is a brand new pair in second place, as 2024 Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) came within 10 minutes of dethroning the long-reigning duo. Indeed, both together and separately, their especially lengthy performances inspired several brushes with Oscars screen time history.
Murphy was specifically awarded for one hour, 53 minutes, and 10 seconds of acting work, while Stone clocked in slightly lower at one hour, 37 minutes, and 19 seconds. Understandably, each far outpaced all of their fellow nominees, respectively landing 27 and 22 minutes above their lineups’ averages. Their own average of one hour, 45 minutes, and 15 seconds makes them only the second pair of lead victors to exceed 100 minutes.

The Academy’s decision to give the Live Action Short Oscar to a star-laden Wes Anderson film has raised eyebrows…
On Sunday, Wes Anderson picked up his first Academy Awards for The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar. It won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film, a category that’s traditionally rewarded independent films, rather than Netflix-backed Roald Dahl adaptation with a major film director behind it.
The Live Action Short film category is attracting more and more high profile names to it, and there’s a real risk that’s squeezing out independent filmmakers from a genuine shot at Oscar gold.
None of this is a slight on Wes Anderson, and genuine congratulations to him on his long-overdue first Oscar.
Still, we’ve been contacted by a few independent filmmakers about the message it sounds out. The following words have been penned by Dan Turner, a British...

Anderson's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar won the Oscar yesterday for Best Live-Action Short. Adapted from the Roald Dahl story, the film originally premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last fall. Netflix also commissioned Anderson to make three other shorts based on Roald Dahl stories - each one an intriguing little tale with just a few characters. The most famous one (and the Oscar winner), Henry Sugar, stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, and Saif Mohsen. Wes Anderson took home his first-ever Academy Award on Sunday night (March 10th), winning the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, one of four Roald Dahl adaptations he made for Netflix in 2023. The writer-director-aesthete did send a message via Netflix, the producers of the award-winning “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” one of four shorts based on Roald Dahl stories currently streaming on the platform.

Wes Anderson has left a profound mark on the American film industry, as he has a very dazzling and dizzying filmmaking style that is instantly recognized by movie connoisseurs. Though Anderson claims to have many great names influence his work, he has developed a style of his own that has made him a renowned artist with a distinct vision. However, one would either love or hate his work and there’s no between.

Luckily, at the 96th Academy Awards, Anderson’s work was nominated Best Live Action Short Film, The Wonderful Short Story of Henry Sugar. The young filmmaker won the award for the category, and Anderson dedicated his award to Owen Wilson, whom he met and believes was the sole reason and inspiration behind his epic win.

Even an Academy Awards telecast as satisfying as the 96th Oscars has some disappointing moments. From missed speeches to missed opportunities to capitalize on its presenters and a misguided attempt to honor those we’ve lost, here are four of the misfires from the Sunday, Mar. 10 telecast.
Wes Anderson misses his first Oscar win
Yes, many folks were displeased about someone of Wes Anderson’s stature crashing the Best Live Action Short category, but the majority of Oscar voters deemed “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” the best of this year’s nominees. The acclaimed director has seven prior nominations for features “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Isle of Dogs” but had surprisingly never taken home a trophy, so it would have been joyous to see him ascend the Oscar stage, statuette in hand, and deliver a trademark idiosyncratic acceptance speech.

Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy won the best actor Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday night, and dedicated his win to the “peacemakers” of the world.
“Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, it’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on over the last 20 years,” Murphy said after taking the stage to accept the award. “I owe you more than I can say. Thank you so much, every single crew member, every single cast member on Oppenheimer, you guys carried me through. All my fellow nominees: I remain in awe of you guys. Truly. I want to thank my incredible team… I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight.”
He continued: “We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb. And for better or for worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world so I’d really like...

Oppenheimer's multiple Oscar wins put lead actor Cillian Murphy in an exclusive actor club that should be easier to get into. Only five other biopics have won Best Picture and Best Actor at the Academy Awards prior to Oppenheimer. With biopics often winning Best Picture, it should be more common that they also take home Best Actor trophies.
Oppenheimer won big at the 96th annual Academy Awards, and its Oscars achievement puts Cillian Murphy in a very exclusive actor club — one that should, frankly, be easier to get into. It was no surprise that Oppenheimer collected multiple Oscar nominations in 2024, as Christopher Nolan's biopic was one of the most talked-about and highest-grossing movies of 2023. Many 2024 Best Picture predictions suggested Oppenheimer would take home the gold in that category. And with a total of 13 nominations overall, it was expected to take home multiple Oscars.

Streamers narrowly avoided getting shut out at the 2024 Oscars: Netflix came away with just one trophy and Apple left empty-handed, after they garnered a total of 32 nominations.
Netflix collected its one win for Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” an adaptation of a Roald Dahl story, in the live action short film category. The 40-minute film, with a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes, is the first Oscar for Anderson (who wasn’t in attendance to receive the award).

Heading into Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, Netflix led all studios and platforms with 19 nominations across 11 films, including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” — which was shut out. Apple had picked up 13 nods, including 10 for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which also drew a goose egg.
Since 2017, Netflix has now won 23 Oscars in all.

The winner for Best Actor at the Academy Awards has been revealed, and it's not a major surprise.
Ahead of the event, it had been predicted by many that Cillian Murphy would be taking the Oscar. At the ceremony on Sunday, the predictions turned out to be accurate with Murphy getting the win. The presenters on stage to hand out the win for Best Actor included previous winners Nicolas Cage, Brendan Fraser, Ben Kingsley, Matthew McConaughey, and Forest Whitaker.

Wes Anderson has won an Academy Award for the live-action short, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, marking the very first time the acclaimed director has actually won an Oscar.
In the past, Anderson has been nominated for seven Oscars — first with 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums — but has never won. Some of his films have received Hollywood’s highest accolade, like when Grand Budapest Hotel took home four awards at the 2015 Oscars, but in those cases, even though Anderson’s films won awards, the director himself was not involved in the award.
Now, with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, though, Anderson is a proper Academy Award-winner. He was not at the ceremony itself, but the award was accepted on his behalf by presenters Issa Rae and Ramy Youssef.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar premiered last September, and is based on the 1977 short-story-of-the-same-name by Roald Dahl. With a runtime of only 37 minutes,...

Wes Anderson, among the most celebrated filmmakers of this generation, is finally taking home an Oscar after being seven-times nominated. The eighth was a charm for his live action short The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar.
He wasn’t there to accept the award, so no speech. Host Jimmy Kimmel congratulated the director in absentia after the break, joking that he was otherwise engaged “building a diorama out of corduroy.”
Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Henry, a wealthy, self-centered young London gentleman who discovers a guru’s mind trick and trains himself over many years to see without using his eyes (including cards). He transforms and uses his newfound gambling wealth to anonymously fund a charitable empire. With Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley and Richard Ayoade.

After eight nominations for six different films he has made, director Wes Anderson has finally won his first Oscar.
Receiving the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short for his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” seems unconventional for both the category, which normally awards emerging filmmakers, and Anderson himself, who was best known till this point for directing features such as “Asteroid City” (which happened to also be in awards contention this season.)
His win was over fellow nominees “The After,” from director Misan Harriman, “Invincible,” from director Vincent René-Lortie, “Knight of Fortune,” from director Lasse Lyskjær Noer, and “Red, White and Blue” from director Nazrin Choudhury.
Anderson’s Oscar achievement comes as a bit of a full circle moment for the auteur, coming just over two decades since his career as a professional filmmaker kicked off with the premiere of his short “Bottle Rocket...

The 2024 Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel returns as host for the fourth time, joined onstage by an all-star list of presenters.
Kimmel previously said he returned to emcee the show partly because he had a feeling a popular movie might be nominated, arguing that it’s easier to joke about something the audience has seen.
“I am sitting in a movie theater watching Barbie and thinking, ‘Well, maybe I’ll do this again, because at least I have a point of reference with everyone,’” he said.
He said he also felt that with Top Gun: Maverick, which landed six Oscar nominations, including a nod for best picture, at the 2023 Oscars: “I knew there was a movie that people had seen, and it just makes the job easier.”

If everything old really is new again, the creative team behind Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood is hoping that putting forward some of the choices from past Oscar ceremonies will prove inspired this time around as well. During a virtual press conference this week with executive producer and showrunner Raj Kapoor, exec producers Molly McNearney (also host Jimmy Kimmel’s wife) and Katy Mullan, and music director Rickey Minor, they pointed to a few new wrinkles this time around – the most significant of which repeats a brainchild that drew raves during the first and only time it was attempted in 2009. That would be the introduction of each nominee in all four acting categories individually by a past winner.

Since we’re talking about the short films, I’ll accordingly keep this brief. Here are five reasons why “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” will win the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
1. It’s the clear standout in the category.
All five nominees are exceptional — the others being “The After,” “Red, White and Blue,” “Invincible” and “Knight of Fortune.” In a less competitive year, any one of them could easily walk away with the prize. But it’s simply too hard for anything to top “Henry Sugar.” Based on the short story of the same name by celebrated children’s author Roald Dahl, the film is seamlessly adapted to the screen with the same charm, wit and magic of the original tale. “Henry Sugar” features superb acting, exquisite costume and production design, beautiful cinematography and sharp editing. Terry Crews is a serial entertainer. The energetic actor has a muscular physique that action icons Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were impressed with when they worked with him on The Expendables franchise. However, despite the hulking image, Crews would not limit himself to action movies as he would use his charismatic charm for such sitcoms like Everybody Hates Chris and Are We There Yet?, as well as being the host for the reality competition, America’s Got Talent. Crews is now ready to throw some fists and let the bullets fly yet again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Crews will be seen in an upcoming action-comedy that will co-star the equally charismatic muscleman, Dave Bautista. Crews and Bautista have recently wrapped filming on The Killer’s Game.
The film’s synopsis, as reported by THR, says, “Based on Jay Bonansinga’s novel, The Killer’s Game follows a veteran assassin (Bautista), who,...

Terry Crews will be playing The Killer’s Game.
The actor will be seen alongside Dave Bautista, Ben Kingsley and Sofia Boutella in the J.J. Perry-directed movie, which has wrapped filming. Crews will be playing a character that was previously reported to be played by Ice Cube.
Based on Jay Bonansinga’s novel, The Killer’s Game follows a veteran assassin (Bautista), who, according to the film’s synopsis, “is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and authorizes a hit on himself to avoid the pain that is destined to follow. But soon after, he finds out that he was misdiagnosed— and must fend off an army of former colleagues trying to kill him.”
Rand Ravich and James Coyne penned the screenplay. Mad Chance’s Andrew Lazar and Endurance Media’s Steve Richards are producers, along with Kia Jam. Bautista and Jonathan Meisner will executive produce for Dogbone Entertainment, with Scott Lambert also exec producing.
