When it comes to the genre of Horror as a whole, there tend to be several common characteristics from movie to movie. It's a safe bet to assume there will be suspense, jump scares, or over-the-top gore. However, regardless of any differences in plot, it is virtually guaranteed that one of the characters will make a string of poor decisions. The beloved Scary Movie films, which will gain another title in 2026 with Scary Movie 6, managed to build an entire franchise around this idea.
As frustrating as these stupid choices are, some don't hold a candle to others. In certain instances, a simple action could've completely changed the trajectory of the story and nullified the threat. These examples are typically present in films where the villain gains their power from some sort of summoning or ritual, or the ire of the villain could have been avoided through common decency. In the last 50 years, there have been countless excellent adaptations based on Stephen King's stories. In many cases, the movies and TV shows paid tribute to the ingenuity of the King of Horror, proving themselves as brilliant, emotionally charged, and twisted as their sources. A feature that contributed to the success of these adaptations, in several instances, has been the performances of the actors.
Stephen King provides an exceptional foundation with his well-crafted and fascinating characters, but once a story unfolds on the big or small screen, the actors are the ones who bring those same characters to life. Their performances determine whether the tension, fear, and humanity in the author's books resonate with the audience. Some of these portrayals have captured the core of his work so profoundly that they cemented their place in cinematic and television history.

Some very exciting news for horror fans this evening, as Mike Flanagan is re-teaming with Stephen King for a new small-screen adaptation of the legendary's author's first novel, Carrie.
Deadline reports that the pair - who recently collaborated on the upcoming The Life of Chuck - are developing the supernatural coming-of-rage tale as an eight-episode series for Amazon, with Flanagan on board as showrunner and exec producer.
Brian De Palma's 1976 take on the book is widely viewed as one of the better King adaptations, with Sissy Spacek delivering a terrifying and tragic turn as the title character, who begins to manifest destructive telekinetic abilities after being relentlessly bullied by her classmates and tormented by her domineering religious fanatic mother. John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, Betty Buckley and William Katt also starred.
The movie's climactic bloodbath is often hailed as one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history.

Horror maestro Mike Flanagan is going back to the Stephen King well for his next TV project. The “Life of Chuck” director is developing a series adaptation of “Carrie” for Prime Video, Deadline reports. Flanagan will serve as showrunner of the eight-episode horror series, which is assembling a writers’ room now.
“Carrie,” originally released in 1974, was King’s first published novel. Director Brian De Palma adapted it into a classic film in 1976, which became the first of dozens of adaptations of King’s books. The film stars Sissy Spacek as the title character, an abused teenager with telekinetic powers, and Piper Laurie as her cruel mother, both of whom received Academy Award nominations for their performances. It got a poorly received sequel in 1999, “The Rage: Carrie 2.” “Carrie” also got a TV movie adaptation in 2002 and another film adaptation in 2013. Stephen King’s Carrie is getting another adaptation — this time in series form.
Amazon MGM Studios is developing a drama based on King’s 1974 novel, which has been the basis for four previous feature films. Mike Flanagan (Netflix’s The Haunting anthology, Doctor Sleep) is adapting the book and will serve as showrunner, executive producing with Trevor Macy of Intrepid Pictures. (Flanagan and Intrepid have overall deals at Amazon MGM Studios.)
Should it go forward, Carrie would stream on Amazon’s Prime Video.
Flanagan has adapted several of King’s works in the past, most recently The Life of Chuck, which won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. He also wrote the screenplays for The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game (the latter with Jeff Howard). He and Macy also have rights to King’s Dark Tower novels.

Mike Flanagan and Stephen King are partnering on a new project — an eight-episode adaptation of King’s beloved novel, “Carrie.” The series will go to Amazon, TheWrap has learned.
Flanagan will serve as the showrunner, writer and executive producer of the upcoming series with Trevor Macy also attached as an EP. Melinda Nishioka will oversee the project for Intrepid Pictures.
The series is being described as “a bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White.”
Flanagan and King have already proven that they can make some spooky magic together. Based on the 2020 novella of the same name, “The Life of Chuck” was well-received at TIFF, winning the People’s Choice Award. The film starring Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan and Jacob Tremblay will be released in the United States by Neon in 2025.
It’s a fitting collaboration between these literary and television masters of horror.

Sissy Spacek unforgettably evolves from ugly duckling to swan to something else entirely in the groundbreaking film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel
Brian De Palma’s insouciantly horrible masterpiece from 1976, adapted from the novel by Stephen King, and mixing in tropes and tricks from Hitchcock’s Psycho, is now rereleased. This is the extraordinary exploitation shocker that also conveyed – or anyway fabricated – an impassioned sympathy for a bullied teenage girl with learning disabilities and telekinetic powers. It was a horror classic that didn’t conform to the narrative beats of the genre; it was a scary movie in which the terrifying demon was also the final girl.
Sissy Spacek gives an amazing performance as Carrie, a shy high school student and put-upon daughter of Margaret (Piper Laurie), whose fanatical religious devotion and fear of sex – and fear of Carrie having sex – stems from having been seduced and abandoned by...

While Stephen King is known as the King of Horror, he has produced masterpieces when he deviated from his usual genre. Examples of such works include The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. Now, King’s sci-fi novella, The Life of Chuck, from his collection If It Bleeds is adapted into a film, that debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival.

8:04pm Pt To close out the night, Catherine O’Hara comes out to present best comedy. After ripping up a fake envelope, she opens the real one and announces an absolute jawdropper of a result: Max’s Hacks, for its third season, has pulled off a massive upset over the second season of FX’s The Bear, the most-nominated comedy of the year and, this year, already the comedy with the most wins in a single season. It’s hard not to see this as a statement from TV Academy members that, as great as The Bear is — and it is truly great — this award is intended for shows that actually make people laugh, which season 2 of The Bear did not do much of, and which season 3, which was rolling out during voting for season 2, really did not do much of.

Folks, we've made it: we're officially in September, which means it's now Spooky Season. Sure, you could argue that the Halloween festivities shouldn't start until October, but I say: nuts to that! Summer is over (more or less), the temperatures are dropping (sometimes), and it's time to start watching horror movies left and right. If you're anything like me, you know that any time of the year is a good time for horror — I'll watch a horror movie in January, I'm so crazy! — but there's something extra special about embracing the genre as we get closer and closer to Halloween. It's almost as if we're given an excuse to cut loose and watch as many scary movies as we possibly can. Tis this season, after all.
With all that in mind, for this month's horror streaming column I've decided to bring out the big guns: Stephen King movies. It's probably...

It can be hard to tell sometimes what is a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. You look at the credentials on a particular film without looking at the title and surely it has to be a mega popular hit. You have Italian mega director Dario Argento, Oscar nominated Piper Laurie, James Russo, Brad Douriff, and special effects by another master of his craft in none other than Tom Savini. I set you up with all those names and accomplishments and maybe you wrack your brain on the possibility that you have seen or even heard of the movie. But I say have you seen the 1993 horror movie Trauma (watch it Here) and I’m guessing for most people, the answer will be no. That is a sure fire way for a movie to end up on this show and that’s why today you will learn why Trauma is...

While his films have ranged from the sublime to the atrocious, there’s no denying the impact Brian De Palma has had on cinema. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
De Palma began his filmmaking career directing underground features shot on a shoestring, many of which starred a young Robert De Niro. There are a lot of Stephen King movies, and that's a trend that shows no sign of slowing down — a new adaptation of "Salem's Lot" is due out on Max sometime this year, while "Longlegs" director Osgood Perkins has a take on King's short story "The Monkey" hitting theaters next year. We all know about the quantity — but what about the quality? I'm a Stephen King nerd, and in all honesty, I enjoy the vast majority of his movies — but I'll also admit some of them are duds (I'm looking at you, "Cell"). Horror is a beloved genre by many, but for a long time, some movie critics felt it was a gutter; a seedy place where no light could break through. As a result, there are some King movies with, let's say, less-than-stellar reviews.

In the 1970s, a guy named Stephen King was living in a trailer with his wife and two kids, struggling to make ends meet. By day, he worked as an English teacher at a high school in Maine. By night, he wrote pulpy short stories that he sold to men's magazines. King, being a guy, primarily wrote stories about guys. Then one day, a friend suggested he write about a female character for a change. So King sat down to write a short story about a girl with telekinetic powers. It wasn't easy: the story goes that King wrote about three pages and then threw the tale in the trash, only to be encouraged to finish it by his wife, Tabitha. Eventually, the story blossomed into a full novel. King would sell the manuscript to Doubleday, and by 1974, Stephen King's debut novel, "Carrie," hit bookshelves in hardcover.

"Carrie" is the book that put Stephen King on the map. When King wrote it, he was struggling financially, eking out a living selling short stories and teaching high school. Then he sat down to write what was first a short story that turned into a novella that turned into a novel. The novel was "Carrie," the story of a bullied teenage girl with telekinesis. The book wasn't a blockbuster when it was published in hardcover, but by the time it hit paperback, it flew off the shelves and King was on his way to becoming one of the best-selling novelists of all time. Sure enough, Hollywood came calling. The book was published in 1974, and by 1976, Brian De Palma's dreamy film adaptation arrived in theaters, starring Sissy Spacek as poor, doomed Carrie White, a girl who is tormented by pretty much everyone, including her Bible-loving mother (played by Piper Laurie) and her classmates.

Returning for its 15th annual edition this weekend, the TCM Classic Film Festival will turn Hollywood Blvd. into the center of the movie universe again for four days, for that very obsessive and loving subset of film fans that has the network’s vintage fare as part of their weekly and daily lives. And just what time span “classics” falls into is exemplified by the big opening and closing night films.
The gala opening night picture is 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” which festival director Genevieve McGillicuddy says “is one of the most contemporary films that we are showing this year, along with ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Little Women,’ the 1994 version. ‘Seven,’ I think, is the most recent film we’re screening; that’s 1995. Just like with the network, we don’t have any official cutoff in terms of the years of films that we’re showing. But, interestingly — it’s the opposite of a cutoff,...

According to Roger Ebert, Walter Murch is “the most respected film editor and sound designer in the modern cinema.” Across a career spanning over 50-years, including multiple Academy Award wins from nine nominations, he has only two directorial credits to his name. The second is a fourth-season episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was preceded over 25 years before by the only feature he directed; Return to Oz.
After her adventures in the Land of Oz, Dorothy Gale (Fairuza Balk) remains obsessed with the locale that she previously visited. Out of a fear that their niece is experiencing delusions, Dorothy’s aunt and uncle take her away to a sanitorium.

Is it possible to go to prom these days without thinking about Carrie? Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel has become so ingrained in the zeitgeist that it’s nearly impossible to shop for a prom dress without a fleeting fear that it might become covered in blood. And perhaps that’s a good thing. Revolutionary at the time, the story concludes with a shocking act of righteous revenge, but mixed into the wreckage is a cautionary tale about bullying and religious abuse. Carrie may wield the fiery hand of justice in the film’s final act, but only after a lifetime of victimization at the hands of her classmates and mother. For decades, Stephen King has been known as the Master of Horror. By now the prolific Maine author is a household name, known to genre fans and normies alike. He’s a central pillar of American folk horror and a major contributor to the modernization of genre fiction. But fifty years ago, Stephen King was a struggling writer hoping to sell his latest story to pay grocery bills and keep the lights on. In fact, notification that Doubleday would be publishing his first novel came via telegram because the Kings had recently disconnected the phone. That novel was Carrie, a shocking story of teenage power and adolescent cruelty. Like a cannonball tearing through the status quo, King would follow this impressive debut with the horror classics Salem’s Lot (1975), The Shining (1977), and The Stand (1978) followed by more than seventy (and counting) novels, short story collections, and nonfiction works, dominating horror fiction for the next fifty years.

Fear Street 4 is reviving an old horror trend that started with Stephen King's movie Carrie. A prom is a perfect horror movie setting, offering tension and no way out for characters. Fear Street 4 isn't a sequel to the trilogy, and it's based on R.L. Stine's The Prom Queen book.
More details about Netflix’s Fear Street 4 have been revealed, and it’s reviving an old horror trend that was perfected almost five decades ago. In 2021, Netflix brought R. L. Stine’s book series Fear Street to life with a trilogy, with each movie set in a different year: 1994, 1978, and 1666. However, they are all connected through the curse of Shadyside, the curse of Sarah Fier, and a series of mysterious murders. Thanks to the success of the trilogy, the world of Fear Street is now expanding with a fourth movie.

One of 2024’s obsessions is “Feud: “Capote vs. the Swans.” The FX on Hulu limited series revolves around the best-selling novelist Truman Capote‘s friendship with several of the highest of New York’s society women include Babe Paley, Slim Keith and Lee Radziwill, the sister of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. The women treat him as a sort of father confessor, but when he publishes an excerpt from what he considers his will be his masterwork “Answered Prayers” in Esquire — a thinly veiled account of their lives and secrets –they feel betrayed and turn their back on their once trusted friend. He spends the rest of his life trying to get back into their good graces.
Everyone knows Capote wrote “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and his superb “In Cold Blood” and was a witty albeit inebriated guest on countless talk shows, but how much do you really know about him?

Part of every awards show is the In Memoriam segment, which honors those who have died in the past year. And that also means that part of every awards show is taking note of who didn’t make the cut (as happens every time). The 2024 Oscars are no exception. Andrea Bocelli and his son Matteo performed “Time to Say Goodbye” for the 2024 Oscars In Memoriam segment. Among the names part of the segment—at the end, the broadcast directed viewers to a website for the “many other legends we lost”—were: Michael Gambon, Harry Belafonte, Alan Arkin, Julian Sands, Andre Braugher, Chita Rivera, Tom Wilkinson, Glynis Johns, Jane Birkin, Paul Reubens, Piper Laurie, Richard Roundtree, Ryan O’Neal, Matthew Perry, Richard Lewis, Lee Sun-Kyun, Carl Weathers, William Friedkin, Glenda Jackson, and Tina Turner. Oppenheimer won the marquee Cast in a Motion Picture prize as the 30th annual SAG Awards were presented Saturday, and its star Cillian Murphy might have wrestled Oscar front-runner status away from Paul Giamatti by taking the trophy for Male Actor in a Leading Role.
Lily Gladstone was cemented as the favorite for the Best Actress Oscar, winning Female Actor in a Leading Role for Killers of the Flower Moon at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in a ceremony streaming live on Netflix for the first time.

The near-constant rotation of villains in the seven seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" provided ample opportunity for guest stars, and some of these roles went to some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Sitcom star John Ritter is a killer robot in the season 2 episode "Ted," Kal Penn of "Harold & Kumar" plays the victim of a cursed beer in season 4, and "Enchanted" star Amy Adams is featured as Tara's estranged cousin in an episode of season 5. But even in that star-studded milieu, some of the most unforgettable performances in the series were given by breakout actors and indie darlings, like SAG Award-winning multihyphenate Clea DuVall.
You might have forgotten that DuVall made an appearance in "Buffy" — in fact, the actor's character didn't appear very much on-screen at all. In "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," DuVall plays Sunnydale High School student Marcie Ross, a girl who is so shy she turns invisible,...

Arrow Video’s January release is the 1970s horror masterwork Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek as a telekinetic title character. If you’ve got a taste for terror – make sure you grab Carrie on 4K Uhd from Arrow Video.
The release includes commentaries and visual essays, a wealth of interviews and archive featurettes, and comes in limited edition packaging, with a 40-page perfect bound book, a fold-out double-sided poster, six collector’s postcards!
In 1974, Stephen King published his first novel, the story of Carrie White, a troubled young girl, bullied by her peers and daughter to a fanatical fundamentalist mother, who discovers she has telekinetic powers. In 1976, it became the first of his works to be adapted for the big screen and, to this day, remains one of the very best.

Piper Laurie's misunderstanding of the script led to an over-the-top and memorable performance as Margaret White, Carrie's mother. The campy and exaggerated tone of the film made the bleak story more digestible and balanced. John Travolta and Nancy Allen also misunderstood the tone, adding to the film's unintentional comedic villainy.

"Return To Oz" disappointed fans as a follow-up to "The Wizard of Oz" due to its lackluster homage and dark tone. Two days ago, I mentioned to the loved ones I was spending Christmas with that I knew exactly where I was 25 years earlier. On the evening of December 25, 1998, I was sitting in a movie theatre, taking in an opening day screening of director Robert Rodriguez‘s alien invasion horror film The Faculty (watch it Here). Now, two days after the film’s 25th anniversary, scooper Daniel Richtman has revealed on his Patreon page that Rodriguez is producing a remake of The Faculty!
That’s all of the information that’s available at this time. The Faculty is getting a remake and Robert Rodriguez is on board as producer.

Brian De Palma's "Carrie" was the film that defined a generation. Its blend of coming-of-age themes, fantastical magic, and slasher-style bloodshed makes it a genre-bending film that time just can't seem to forget.
The 1976 horror tells the story of a sheltered girl who lives under her obsessively religious mother's tyrannical rule, a dictatorship made all the worse by the onset of Carrie's period. Her mother's frenzy combined with a cruel prank at the prom pushes the shy young girl to a mental break, complete with telekinetic powers. The Stephen King adaptation launched some incredibly notable careers, including John Travolta, who plays high school bully Billy Nolan. Sadly, not all of the cast has lived to see the end of 2023, including Piper Laurie, whose performance as Carrie's mother earned her one of three Oscar nominations in her lifetime.

Piper Laurie recently died following a long illness and her former Twin Peaks co-star Kyle MacLachlan is paying tribute to the late star.
“It’s never easy losing a member of the Twin Peaks family, & the passing of #PiperLaurie is no different,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “She was such a caring presence & incredible force on screen. The vivacious energy she brought to Catherine will live on forever. Sending love to her family, friends, & fans.”
MacLachlan shared a photo that featured himself alongside Laurie, Joan Chen and Michael Ontkean.
Laurie starred as Catherine Martell in the David Lynch and Mark Frost series in all the episodes from the original run. For her role in the series, she was nominated for the Golden Globe in the Best Supporting Actress category in 1990. That same year, Laurie earned a nomination at the Primetime Emmys in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.

Sometimes it seems like Stephen King has done literally everything a person could do. As of this publication he has written over 70 books and over 200 short stories. He directed a movie where the Green Goblin was a killer truck possessed by a comet. He wrote an episode of "The X-Files." He did a cameo on "The Simpsons." Twice. He even did an "X-Men" comic book once.
So it probably comes as no surprise that Stephen King's work has been adapted into an episode of "The Twilight Zone." Indeed, the only things that are surprising about it is that it only happened once, and that hardly anyone has heard of it nowadays. But it's real. It's based on Stephen King's short story "Gramma," it was adapted by sci-fi luminary Harlan Ellison, it co-stars Piper Laurie from "Carrie," and it's part of the H.P. Lovecraft Cthulhu mythos.

“Carrie,” the 1976 Cinderella-goes-to-the-bloodbath horror film that gave Piper Laurie, who died Oct. 14 at 91, the role for which she’ll probably be best remembered, is the movie that changed my life. I was 17, home for the Thanksgiving weekend of my freshman year at college. “Carrie” had opened earlier that month, and I went to see it on Friday at our local mall. I knew nothing about it. I was just a naïve budding film geek who saw everything that played in town. But “Carrie,” for me, was the film-geek equivalent of watching the Beatles on “Ed Sullivan.” By the time the movie was over, I was a different person.
During the big shock sequence at the end, when Carrie’s hand pokes up through the earth in front of her grave, I literally stood up out of my seat in terror. That’s how real it all was to me.
