Since the Oscars nominations were announced on Thursday, 4,000 people have already made their winner predictions at Gold Derby. At this initial stage, The Brutalist is the one to beat, with five forecasted wins: picture, director, actor, cinematographer, and score. Emilia Pérez sets the record for most nominations for a non-English language film at 13. Previous record holders, with 10 nominations each, were Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Roma (2018).

While critics’ scores don’t determine the Best Picture lineup (there are thousands of highly rated movies each year), once the lineup is selected by the Motion Picture Academy, there are at least a few tea leaves worth reading. For instance, the only film to win Best Picture in the last 10 years with a freshness rating lower than 90 percent is Green Book, which has a Tomatometer score of just 77 percent.

For one, the fan-beloved Kieran Culkin is up on the list for the first time in his star-studded acting career for giving one of the best performances of his lifetime in his 2024 masterpiece. But the competition is also rather tough, for battling alongside him is none other than the actor who almost played Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger: Jeremy Strong.

Coralie Fargeat, who directed the latter film, was the only female to be nominated in the best directing category, and also scored a writing nom, while star Demi Moore landed the first Oscar nom of her career, as did Isabella Rossellini for Conclave.

Karla Sofía Gascón, the Spanish-born star of Emilia Pérez, was nominated for best actress, making her the first openly transgender performer to be so honored.

Congratulations are in order for Yura Borisov and the Anora cast, who have landed multiple Oscar nominations Thursday.

But perhaps no one will be more delighted than the previously relatively unknown star, Borisov, who has become the first Russian actor to earn an Oscar nomination in a performance category since 1977.

The full list of nominations was presented by actors Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater with Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown) and Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) rounding out the competition in the supporting actor category.

The last Russian nominated for an Academy Award in an acting category was Mikhail Baryshnikov in 1977 for The Turning Point. The last to win was Lila Kedrova in 1964 for Zorba the Greek.

The 97th Oscars airs Sunday, 2 March, with the in-person event taking place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.

It’s official: Emilia Pérez has emerged as the frontrunner of awards season this year. Not only did Jacques Audiard’s gangster-thriller-musical-character-drama rack up major love at this year’s BAFTA nominations, but it’s the leader of the pack in the Oscar nominees in 2025 too. The film has been nominated in 13 categories at this year’s Academy Awards – including Best Picture, Director for Audiard, Leading Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, and Adapted Screenplay. It nabbed two Original Song nominations too, going up against itself with ‘El Mal’ and ‘Mi Camino’. As ever, though, the most nominations doesn’t necessarily mean the most wins.

The 2025 Oscar nominations are here! The full list of noms for the 97th Academy Awards have been revealed, and “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” indeed performed well, given how they cleaned up at the Golden Globes (with four wins for the Jacques Audiard film and three for Brady Corbet’s). And so did that absolute blockbuster juggernaut “Wicked.”

“Emilia Pérez” scored 13 nods, tied with multiple other films such as “Gone with the Wind,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Oppenheimer” for the second-most of all time. This is the most noms a non-English language feature has ever received.

“The Brutalist” and “Wicked” each scored 10 nominations, showing the extraordinary momentum they’ve built across awards season — “Wicked” has now grossed almost $466 million domestically. Both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received acting nominations.

The 97th Oscars Nominations Announcement has just concluded and we now know which movies will go head-to-head with each other during the year's most prestigious awards ceremony.

There are the usual surprise snubs, with Dune: Part Two and Wicked picking up over a dozen nominations between them but receiving nothing in the Best Director category for filmmakers Denis Villeneuve and Jon M. Chu.

Demi Moore, meanwhile, has received a Best Actress nod, only for her The Substance co-star Margaret Qualley to be frozen out. On the plus side, Thunderbolts* star Sebastian Stan did manage to land a Best Actor nomination for his role in The Apprentice as Donald Trump.

We’ve put on our finest clothing and poured a glass of champagne in honour of the Oscar nominations that have just emanated from the Academy’s chimney.

Among the big names in the running for an award this year are Wicked star Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress, Kieran Culkin in the Best Supporting Actor category for his engaging turn in A Real Pain, and Nosferatu for Best Make-Up & Hair. (We like to think that it was Bill Skarsgård’s moustache that swung the latter nomination.)

Fun fact: three of the five nominations in the Best Visual Effects category have primates in. Something for the VFX studios out there should think about if they want a nomination next year.

After being delayed twice due to the fires in Los Angeles, the Academy was able to announce the choices live this morning (January 23). Some big fan favorite names and films are recognized this year, and it’s sure to be a great show!

This year, Emilia Pérez received the most nominations with 13 total, followed by The Brutalist and Wicked, which each received 10.

The 2025 Academy Awards will air live on March 2, 2025. Fan favorite comedian and talk show host Conan O’Brien is set to host the show for the very first time. Just Jared will be live updating all night on March 2, so be sure to watch along with us!

It was followed closely behind by “The Brutalist,” a historical epic the examines the immigrant experience, and “Wicked,” the hit screen version of a long-running Broadway sensation, which both nabbed 10 nominations. “Conclave,” a thriller about the election of a new pope, and “A Complete Unknown,” a look at Bob Dylan’s early, freewheelin’ years, each had 8 nominations.

The Oscar nominations were unveiled Thursday after voting had been extended twice because of the wildfires that have devastated Los Angeles, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 people and catastrophic property damage. This week, the Oscars announced that its March telecast will “acknowledge those who fought so bravely against the wildfires.”

The State of the Race

The same can be said for almost all the other acting races, but wow does the proposed Best Supporting Actor lineup look a lot different than it did at the top of awards season. The only constant has been “A Real Pain” star Kieran Culkin being most expected to win.

Besides receiving the majority of critics awards, the Emmy winner took home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, kicking off the televised portion of his Oscar run.

The word masterpiece is thrown around a lot, but when leaving the cinema having just given four hours of your life to Brady Corbet’s epic production The Brutalist, it really is the first word that comes to mind.

Ahead of it’s UK release, and in the midst of the festival season, of which this film is a frontrunner in all major categories, we had the pleasure in speaking to three of its stars; Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Joe Alwyn. We discussed the merits of the film and when they realised they were working on something special. They speak about the direction, and they tell us about how other roles impacted these – and for Jones, that included a lean into her experience with Jedi-spirit. They also talk about one of the film’s most impact scenes, and how Pearce ended up hiding behind a cupboard.

The Brutalist director Brady Corbet clarified how AI tools were used on the film during postproduction after social media outrage about the practice spread widely over the weekend.

In a statement provided to Gold Derby, Corbet said nothing was done to alter the performances of stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, who play Hungarian immigrants in America just after World War II. “Adrien and Felicity’s performances are completely their own. They worked for months with dialect coach Tanera Marshall to perfect their accents,” Corbet said. He explained that AI tools were used in editing parts where the actors spoke Hungarian onscreen.

“Innovative Respeecher technology was used in Hungarian language dialogue editing only, specifically to refine certain vowels and letters for accuracy,” Corbet added. “No English language was changed. This was a manual process done by our sound team and Respeecher in post-production. The aim was to preserve the authenticity...
