Tuesday, October 18, will mark the 50th anniversary of the Quad Cinema opening its doors in New York City. Over the last five decades, the independent theater has established itself as a haven for cinephiles with its frequent showings of rare films, new restorations of classics, and indie hits. To celebrate the landmark anniversary, the Quad is devoting its Theater U to showing the four films that played when the theater first opened: “Butterflies Are Free,” “Play It Again, Sam,” “Slaughterhouse-Five,” and “The Gang’s All Here.”
Milton Katselas’ “Butterflies Are Free” tells the story of a romance that blossoms between a blind man (Edward Albert) and his neighbor (Goldie Hawn) after the man moves into his first apartment by himself. The film was an adaptation of Leonard Gershe’s hit Broadway play of the same name, with the playwright returning to write the screenplay. Eileen Heckart won an Oscar for...

By the early ‘80s, Roger Corman was firmly entrenched in the public’s eye as The low budget wizard, always cranking out movies like a reliable sausagemeister. However, to the more discerning trash hound, his films were fertile ground for up and coming filmmakers, a place to learn the craft and hopefully develop one’s own style. And while Galaxy of Terror (1981), a crossbreed of Alien with a strand of Forbidden Planet DNA, does boast one James Cameron among the crew, its most notable feat is being highly entertaining regardless of a decimated budget and convoluted plot.
Released in October of ’81 Stateside by New World Pictures/United Artists, and alternately known as Mindwarp: An Infinity of Terror And Planet of Horrors (Hey Rog – pick one!), GoT cost $700,000 Us, and of course made its money back (Corman almost always saw a return). This was right in the middle of Corman’s space mining – before this,...

She pulls some strings to get her lover cast in the play, although he's a relatively unknown actor. With the cast in place, rehearsals for the play, about an abusive relationship and a grudge, begin. But off stage, some begin to develop their own obsessions. Trapped between the play and reality, they are horrified to find that a real grudge can cross the blurred line between reality and fantasy. Will love flourish? Or has it already turned hideously dark?...

Polly Bergen: 'Desperate Housewives' Emmy nominee; winner for 'The Helen Morgan Story' (photo: Felicity Huffman, Doug Savant, and Polly Bergen in 'Desperate Housewives') (See previous article: "Polly Bergen: Actress on Richard Nixon 'Enemies List'.") Polly Bergen began her lengthy — and to some extent prestigious — television career in 1950, making sporadic appearances in anthology series. She won an Emmy for Best Actress in a Single Performance – Lead or Supporting — beating Julie Andrews, Helen Hayes, Teresa Wright, and Piper Laurie — for playing troubled torch singer Helen Morgan (Show Boat) in the 1957 Playhouse 90 episode "The Helen Morgan Story," featuring veteran Sylvia Sidney as Morgan's mother. Curiously, Bergen's retelling of Helen Morgan's story was broadcast the same year that Ann Blyth starred in Michael Curtiz's Morgan biopic. Also titled The Helen Morgan Story, the film focused on the relationship between the singer and a...

John Landis - the man responsible for such films as The Blues Brothers, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Animal House and An American Werewolf in London - thinks that Christopher Nolan is a smart, talented filmmaker, but in a recent interview he stated in no uncertain terms that Nolan's summer blockbuster Inception was not an original concept.
Speaking with Obsessed With Film, Landis had the following to say about Inception: "Interestingly enough, Inception, which is wonderful, is not original. There have been a lot of movies like it.
"Remember Dreamscape? Oh, that's bad special effects but almost the same movie. It's Dennis Quaid, and Edward Albert is the president of the United States, and they insert him into his dreams.

Christopher Nolan's dream-within-a-dream saga 'Inception' has endured its fair share of criticism since the movie's release this summer. While many have hailed the film as a visual masterpiece and a true original, others have noted similarities between 'Inception' and a handful of other films like 1984's 'Dreamscape' and the 2006 anime 'Paprika.' Now, 'Burke & Hare' director John Landis is adding his vote to the "not original" category by stating that he doesn't think Nolan's latest is anything new.
Landis had this to say about the film: "Interestingly enough 'Inception,' which is wonderful, is not original. There have been a lot of movies like it; remember 'Dreamscape?' Oh that's bad special effects but almost the same movie. It's Dennis Quaid and Edward Albert is the president of the United States and they insert him into his dreams.

John Landis believes "Inception" is "not original". The "Burke and Hare" filmmaker believes the Christopher Nolan-directed project, which was widely loved by critics on its release earlier this year, is "almost the same" as 1984 movie "Dreamscape" with Dennis Quaid and he doesn't think Nolan has many new ideas.

"Ya know, I think, don't misunderstand me I think Christopher Nolan is a wonderful director its just I don't think he is yet to make a movie other than 'Memento' that I thought was really original, its just very stylish."

John Landis has said that he does not believe Inception is original. The Burke & Hare director admitted that he thinks the film is "wonderful" but pointed out similarities with previous pictures - most notably 1984 movie Dreamscape. He also suggested that Inception's Christopher Nolan has not had an original idea for a film since his 2000 offering Memento. If I were to make a list of my favorite directors it would look like this: 1. Alfred Hitchcock 2. Dario Argento 3. Ridley Scott 4. Lucio Fulci and 5. Roger Corman. Why Roger Corman? If you hand him half a mil and say “I need this pic by the end of the week”… he’ll deliver. Let’s see the almighty Spielberg do that. Roger Corman is the king of making something for nothing and we are the better for it because his movies are what movies should be…Fun. I would love to see what he could do with a budget and a solid script, but that won’t happen, so let’s accept him as the low budget God he is.
The list of people who have worked for him is ridiculous. Nicholson, Scorsese, Cameron, Coppola and a boatload of actors who’ve all made a mark on the...

Through the course of writing Cold Spots, we’ve taken our readers on a tour of the U.S., taking a look at the most haunted and strangest places from each state. In many cases, the articles are written about places by speaking to eyewitnesses, reading newspaper reports, and trusting in the skill of other paranormal investigative entities to provide evidence of hauntings, taking only the most interesting and disturbing pieces to illustrate the history of the locations.
First and foremost, we are, ourselves, paranormal investigators, however. Cold Spots Paranormal Research was founded with the idea of seeking out places reputed to be haunted, to gather evidence, and to disprove the hauntings wherever possible. If there is an explanation for the strange noises, the opening doors, or the drops in temperature from which we took our name, it is our job to find it. Sometimes, however, things defy description. Eddie Albert, the versatile actor forever associated with the classic TV comedy Green Acres, died Thursday of pneumonia at his home in California; he was 99. Although he made his screen debut in 1938 and appeared in a number of films, Albert's film career took off considerably after his service in World War II, and in the 50s he embarked on a career that consisted primarily of acclaimed supporting roles in a variety of films, usually as the sidekick to the star. He was the photographer who tagged along with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday (a role which earned him an Oscar nomination), played a cowardly army officer in Attack!, and provided comic relief as Ali Hakim in Oklahoma; other notable films in the 50s included I'll Cry Tomorrow, The Teahouse of the August Moon, and The Sun Also Rises. In 1965, though, Albert ascended to leading man status as the hero of the sitcom Green Acres, in which he played a New York attorney who yearned for the country life, and dragged his glamorous wife (Eva Gabor) to the tiny, eccentric town of Hooterville. His duet with Gabor of the show's title song was enough to earn him a place in pop culture history, but Albert continued to work practically non-stop after the show ended in 1971. As he aged, Albert also played more menacing, morally questionable characters, and earned a second Oscar nomination for The Heartbreak Kid, playing Cybill Shepherd's intimidating father. Though a number of the films and TV shows he appeared in were decidedly B-level, Albert always brought a sense of class and grace to his parts, whether they were dramatic or comedic. Albert is survived by his son, actor Edward Albert, a daughter, and two granddaughters. --Prepared by IMDb staff...
