This year’s Humanitas Prizes for screenwriting, usually handed out at Beverly Hilton ceremony, were announced via the Los Angeles Times this year in solidarity with the unions on strike, including the Unite Here Local 11 hospitality workers. And on top of awarding shows like The Last of Us and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Humanitas, an organization founded in 1974, also honored the striking Writers Guild of America itself with its “Voice for Change” award. Past winners of that award have included Ava DuVernay and Kenya Barris.
Humanitas’ mission is to tell “stories that explore the human experience because we believe that the act of acknowledging our common humanity is transformational.” With that in mind, this year the organization’s winners include The Last of Us‘ Craig Mazin for the teleplay for the emotional and critically lauded episode “Long, Long Time” in the drama television category. Colton Haynes will be headlining a new “Ripped From the Headlines” movie for “Lifetime.” The former “Teen Wolf” and “Arrow” star will portray two crooked twin brothers in “Swindler Seduction.”
The channel also announced the upcoming movie “An Amish Sin” with Kellie Martin, Dylan Ratzlaff and Rukiya Bernard.
Premiering on Oct. 22, “Swindler Seduction” features Haynes as a con-man who fools and steals from women like Gabrielle Graham’s Louisa, à la the “Tinder Swindler.” The inspired-by-true events thriller exposes the world of the romantic con artists, with Haynes portraying a seemingly perfect angel investor and entrepreneur named Steve who eventually swindles Louisa out of thousands of dollars. When the authorities refuse to help her, she must track him and his twin down in her attempts to seek justice for herself and other women.

DC’s Stargirl TV series has seen its release date shift slightly…but not too much! Originally scheduled to premiere on Monday, May 11 on the DC Universe streaming service with a broadcast to follow on the CW on Tuesday, May 12, Stargirl will now arrive on DC Universe a week later, on Monday, May 18 instead, with the CW broadcast to follow on Tuesday, May 19th. The premiere date shift might reflect a need for The CW to fill holes in its schedule since the latter episodes of most of its heavy hitters like The Flash, Supernatural, Supergirl, Batwoman, and others have been temporarily delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
But the good news is that from that point forward it looks like the rest of the series is right on schedule, and DC Universe and The CW have confirmed air dates and revealed official details about the first five episodes!
Just a quick note,...

Van Helsing Season 4 Episode 9
“We are alive because of you,”
Viewed in isolation as a pure standalone episode, “No I In Team” delivers a powerful look at a small group of young women and their reaction to the nightmare apocalyptic circumstances that appear virtually out of nowhere. Viewed within the context of the larger Van Helsing landscape, this chapter provides an intimate study of Jack’s experiences on the day of The Rising as she and her teammates learn more about themselves than they ever expected when they innocently leave home to compete in a high school archery tournament. Still, despite its compelling depiction of the terrifying journey through an end of days scenario, “No I In Team” disappoints a bit by failing...

Fans mostly have their sights set on “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” but don’t forget that the various Arrowverse shows have got to hit their big midseason finales before the crossover event kicks off. For The Flash, in particular, the first half of its sixth season will conclude with a dramatic two-parter, titled “The Last Temptation of Barry Allen,” in which the Star Labs gang have to battle Bloodwork and his army. The opening hour is next week, but just to jump the gun, here are some spoiler-free pics from the second part.
Rather than revealing any shocking details about these episodes, the images showcase the various members of Team Flash as they come together to face whatever it is Bloodwork’s about to throw at them. And you can tell from their solemn expressions that things are going to get serious. In particular, our heroes appear to be staring at something pretty intimidating off-camera.

The Purge proves once again that anti-gun zones fail to stop gun violence and being a pacifist won't save you when it's kill or be killed.
This The Purge review contains spoilers.
The Purge Episode 8
Like Penelope and Miguel, I am a Purge survivor. No, really! If you'll indulge me my inner Sophia Petrillo, picture it: Louisville, 2014.
It's a hot August day, when fliers start appearing on telephone poles around town. The leering face of the masked man from the original Purge film dominates the flier, which promises “Louisvilles The Purge” from 8:00 Pm until 6:30 Am. In hindsight, it seems silly, but at the time, it was taken seriously as a real threat. Five months earlier, a mob of 200 teenagers formed up at a major park on the city waterfront. The group rampaged up and down major streets, beating, robbing, and vandalizing property before the incident dispersed. Several people were hospitalized.

Horror that skews to a younger audience is a tricky proposition: where is the line between appealing to their budding sensibilities and traumatizing them forever? It’s a fine one for sure, but the ‘80s were built for the young, with the MTV and the glowing clothes and the disaffected suburbanites (just ask Rush); it was a playful decade culturally, and horror plugged directly into that adolescent electricity with The Gate (1987), a hellzapoppin’ tale of friendship, family, metal, and jaw dropping satanic trolls.
Released by New Century Vista Film Company mid-May in North America, the Canadian made film was a surprise hit, bringing in nearly $14 million against a $2.5 million budget. The critics liked it too, especially heaping praise on its very impressive stop motion and forced perspective work, courtesy of Randall William Cook (Fright Night). But technical wizardry aside, The Gate deserves a lot of credit for tapping into childhood...

Syfy has canceled the horror series Ghost Wars after its debut 13-episode season, Deadline has confirmed. The series premiered in October 2017.
Created by Simon Barry, Ghost Wars was an acquisition title for the cable network. Set in a remote Alaskan town that has been overrun by paranormal forces, the series focuses on local outcast Roman Mercer (Avan Jogia) who must overcome the town’s prejudices and his own personal demons if he’s to harness his repressed psychic powers and save everyone from the mass haunting that’s threatening to destroy them all.
Ghost Wars starred Vincent D’Onofrio, Kim Coates, Avan Jogia, Kristin Lehman and Meatloaf. David Von Ancken directed the pilot while Barry helmed two episodes. Other directors included Leslie Hope, Michael Nankin, Mathias Herdndl, and Jason Priestley. Nomadic Pictures’ Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev served as executive producers with Barry, Dennis Heaton and Von Ancken.

“We accidentally summoned demons who used to rule the universe to come and take over the world,” says Terry (Louis Tripp), the troubled best friend of pre-teen Glen (Stephen Dorff in his film debut). He’s not joking. A steaming hole has opened up in Glen’s back garden, and while his parents are away for the weekend he’ll have to defend his home from a demonic invasion.
Glen’s main guardian is his older sister, Al (Christa Denton). Together, the siblings and Terry will face ghosts, poltergeists, zombies, moths and hordes of ankle-biting mini trolls. The ancient evil needs two human sacrifices in order to unleash its full power on the world. Any two will do. Can the kids survive the night?...

My memories of The Gate come from first seeing the video cover at the rental store and immediately wanting to see it. To my young eyes, it was just a must see. Now as a grown up, getting the chance to re-watch it for review, I hoped the magic was still there. Thankfully it turned out that it was, made all the better on Blu-ray.

“Elam Ferguson”, the seventh episode of Hell on Wheels season four changed the course of the series. Losing one of the original main characters, Elam (Common), at the hands of Cullen (Anson Mount) was shocking, devastating, and redefining for Cullen. There will obviously be repercussions. Cullen could potentially lose his alliance and friendship with the African-American community he works with, Eva (Robin McLeavy), could turn on him, and his wife, already fragile and insecure, now looks at Cullen with fear.
“Under Color of Law” handles the aftermath of Elam’s death carefully. Eva survives her pain by helping Elam’s hostage, Charlotte (Sara Canning), and drinking. Cullen survives by smothering the painful memories and pushing Naomi (MacKenzie Porter) away. It’s obvious that he’s in pain and perhaps he refuses to acknowledge Naomi because...

Syfy has announced that the great game/series crossover Defiance is set to return to production in Toronto next week for Season 2. Along with that announcement comes the first information about new and returning cast and production, starting with James Murray as Mayor Pottinger. Ooo. He was the dishy Stephen from when-it-was-great Season 1 and 2 of Primeval.
But wait, there’s more – “Grant Bowler returns as Nolan, along with … Stephanie Leonidas as Irisa Nolan, Tony Curran as Datak Tarr…” Okay, we saw Nolan revive, which explains how he can return, but Irisa, what the heck did she turn into? Apparently still Irisa, so that’s good news. And excellent, Tony Curran will be back as Datak, so… how will he get out of the blood-covered mess he was in?

Returns to SyFy in 2014
When Defiance came along a couple months ago, there weren’t high expectations. It’s been a while since good science-fiction series populated TV (turn your attention to Orphan Black, if you didn’t catch the first season). Then it impressed us with its two-hour season premiere, which mostly functioned as a stand-alone TV film. It told a good enough story and concluded with a great action set piece that was more than satisfactory for a SyFy channel that hasn’t embraced more classic ideas of science-fiction in a while. Critical reaction to the series has been pretty moderate, and that’s probably about the right amount that it deserves. With the season finale now gone, it’s too much of a stretch to say that this was a truly great...

Defiance, Season 1: Episode 12 – “Past is Prologue”
Directed by Michael Nankin
Written by Michael Taylor
Airs Monday nights at 9 on SyFy
Penultimate episodes in seasons are notoriously difficult (unless they’re in a season of Game of Thrones), since most of the work being done is meant to drive attention and expectations towards the finale. Defiance hasn’t really had an up-and-down first season with memorable episodes here and there. It’s mostly just been fine. It’s surprising, then, that it’s the penultimate episode that addresses some of the minor gripes I’ve been having while watching. For starters, “Past is Prologue” is much more focused. Defiance has been guilty of running parallel stories in episodes that are struggling to execute just one of them to its potential. Everything in this episode – all the scenes with the secondary characters – is connected, revolving mainly around the mayoral election between Amanda and Datak.

Defiance, Season 1: Episode 5 – “A Well Respected Man”
Directed by Michael Nankin
Written by Craig Gore and Tim Walsh
Airs Monday nights at 9 on SyFy
It was in my review of last week’s episode of Defiance that I suggested a StarCraft connection for this series. Maybe it’s because I played those games too much, but that Volge up there looks like it could be an accurate cross between a Protoss Zealot and a Zerg Hydralisk. In any case, the video game influence that you would expect this show to have shines through again in “A Well Respected Man” during a cat and mouse scene (albeit an imaginary one) that infuses a menace reserved for moments with the likes of Silent Hill‘s Pyramid Head or Resident Evil‘s Nemesis. Kenya can’t go toe-to-toe with a single Volge, even if they’re more vulnerable than either of those other entities.

Defiance Season 1, Episode 3 “Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go”
Directed by Michael Nankin
Written by Kevin Murphy and Anupam Nigam
Airs Monday nights at 9pm on SyFy
Last week, Defiance had a two-hour premiere that functioned almost as a TV movie. There were three acts that were clearly demarcated with the final act typically immersing itself in some high-stakes action. If you missed the premiere and haven’t had a chance to look up any information about Defiance, there’s a lot you should know. First of all, this is a proper science-fiction series, which didn’t use to need to be a preface for a SyFy show. There are several alien races that exist alongside humans, there are spaceships, there is other advanced technology and it is set in the not-too-distant future. Second, the release of the Defiance TV series complements the release of the Defiance video game.

If you watched the premiere of Defiance on Monday night, and if you posted about that on a social networking site, you were not alone. Not only did one of Syfy‘s biggest and most ambitious undertakings to date bring in record viewership numbers, it won the night in “social exposures,” which sounds like an unfortunate middle school incident but is actually a good thing for the show and for the network.
To celebrate, we have a featurette with showrunner Kevin Murphy and star Grant Bowler talking about the pilot (not Too spoilery, but best watched after you’ve seen the premiere) entitled “Shooting the Shtako” (yes it means what you think it means), and the press release with all of the numbers, for you digit heads out there.

Review Billy Grifter 16 Apr 2013 - 13:00
Billy checks out new Syfy post-alien invasion series Defiance, and likes some of what he sees...
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
1.1 Pilot
What's fascinating about sci-fi shows is that they're invariably influenced by others in the genre. Right from the start of Defiance we're bombarded with references to many things, like a buffet where the host couldn't decide if they wanted to serve Chinese or pizza, and so threw it, along with curry and sushi all on the same plate. Defiance gives us Mad Max over Firefly, with a side order of Shakespeare and the general ambience of a thousand cowboy movies rolled into one.
As with any overly ambitious cuisine there are parts that work well, and others you'd push to the edge of the plate. But, it all starts well enough. After watching the whole thing, the strongest...

With the launch of the Defiance series and TV show imminent, we spoke to producer and director Michael Nankin about its making...
The Syfy Channel is about to air what is surely its biggest experiment yet. Called Defiance, it’s a sci-fi series which not only employs some proven industry talent - not least writer Rockne S O’Bannon, of Alien Nation and SeaQuest Dsv fame, director and producer Michael Nankin, who previously helmed episodes of Battlestar Galactica and Alphas - but also coincides with the launch of the online shooter of the same name.
In a media first, Defiance the TV series and Defiance the videogame will share characters and storylines, with events in the show replicated in the online experience, too. It’s a concept that has roped in the creative minds from both Syfy and Trion Worlds, cost an undisclosed sum of money,...
