Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga go toe-to-toe as twisted lovers in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the sequel to 2019 Batman prequel “Joker” which won Phoenix the Best Actor Academy Award. Gaga takes on the role of Harley Quinn, with Phoenix reprising his titular role as Arthur Fleck.

Joaquin Phoenix starrer Joker was a great character study of one of the most beloved supervillains/antiheroes of the DC lore. After the overwhelming love for the character’s portrayal by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, Phoenix took on the impossible task of reinventing the character. Alienating itself from the DC universe also added to its focused narrative.

The one-man Joker: Folie À Deux promotional machine that is co-writer/director Todd Phillips marches onwards. He used Valentine's Day as an excuse to post some brand new, romantic images of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn (or at least a version of her in Phillips' tweaked mythology). Have a scroll through the pics from Phillips' Instagram here:
Though the actual plot line for the movie remains a tightly guarded secret, we do know it'll pick up with Arthur still languishing in Arkham Asylum after the violent, chaotic events of the 2019 film. And that's presumably where he meets Harley, who in usual Batman/Joker lore is his ride-or-die (and partner in crime). Also in the cast for this one is a returning Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, plus Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Jacob Lofland.

Five years ago, Todd Phillips’ surprise hit movie Joker, which startled both reviewers and audiences, became a smash at the box office. Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the grim version of DC Comics’s classic villain (Arthur Fleck / Joker) even brought him an Oscar. The long wait for a sequel will finally pay off later this year when Joker 2 opens in theaters on October 4, 2024. Will this be a traditional follow-up?
Rumors quickly spread that the follow-up might see a musical pivot after Lady Gaga joined the cast as Harley Quinn. Although not much is known about Joker: Folie à Deux, Lawrence Sher, the film’s cinematographer, has recently declared that it is “not a musical”.

It appears that this decision was made to correct a major error before the film’s release in order to avoid the problems that have previously afflicted The Marvels.

“Joker: Folie à Deux” director Todd Phillips marked Valentine’s Day 2024 with a special new look at his highly-anticipated sequel, which pairs returning Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix with Lady Gaga as Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn. Phillips added as the caption to the post: “Hoping your day is full of love.”
Specific plot details for the second “Joker” film are not yet known, although it’s been described as a drama with musical elements set in and around Arkham Asylum. The supporting cast includes returning “Joker” star Zazie Beetz opposite franchise newcomers Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey.
The original “Joker” opened to much controversy and fanfare in 2019 and grossed over $1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing R-rated release in box office history. The candy-colored look of Barbie delivered colorist Yvan Lucas of Company 3 the FilmLight Color Award for a theatrical feature.
The third annual awards — organized by FilmLight, the maker of the Baselight color grading system, in collaboration with Camerimage — were presented Sunday at the EnergaCamerimage cinematography film festival in Toruń, Poland. From roughly 400 entries, honorees were selected by a jury chaired by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lawrence Sher (Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux), who presented the awards.
Of his award-winning work on Barbie, which was directed by Greta Gerwig and lensed by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, Lucas tells The Hollywood Reporter, “Rodrigo Prieto and I both like to work together on the overall look of a film before production starts. There was an emotional start to the 31st EnergaCamerimage cinematography film festival as news spread that John Bailey — the cinematographer behind films such as Ordinary People, The Big Chill and As Good As It Gets, and former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — died Friday at age 81.
During Saturday’s opening ceremony, festival director Marek Żydowicz gave a heartfelt tribute to the Dp as he opened Camerimage, which is held annually in Toruń, Poland. “It is very difficult for me to talk about it,” he said, introducing a black-and-while clip featuring portions of Bailey’s 2019 speech when he accepted the Camerimage Lifetime Achievement Award. Bailey and his wife, Oscar-nominated editor Carol Littleton, had attended the festival on multiple occasions. Żydowicz also emphasized the bond between Camerimage and the Motion Picture Academy that Bailey helped to strengthen. He said, “John, you will forever be in our hearts.

We were already excited for Joker: Folie à Deux but now the movie’s cinematographer is promising that it will offer plenty of surprises for fans when it comes out next October.

We’ve got the new Joker coming out next year and we’re just finishing up post-production on it. This movie is a big swing and it’s going to be really surprising to people. Although there’s no trailer for the sequel of the 2019 film ‘Joker’, titled Joker: Folie à Deux, we are pretty sure it will be an absolute masterpiece, not less than the first Joker. Why? Because the same team is in the making: Director Todd Phillips, and Dp Lawrence Sher. The camera is the mighty Arri Alexa 65, which is the same camera that shot Joker 1.

Color grading system developer FilmLight announced the nominees for its Color Awards, which recognize the work of colorists on movies, TV and short-form content.
In their third year, the competition attracted roughly 400 entries. Winners, which will be selected by a jury led by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lawrence Sher (Joker), will be announced Nov. 12 at the EnergaCamerimage cinematography film festival.
“The diversity of talent and work is, as expected, very high. Our jury meetings so far, with talented cinematographers, colorists and filmmakers, have illuminated how fundamental the colorists’ work is in the filmmaking process and it’s been a complex job to determine the nominees. Everyone that has made it through these early rounds has, in our eyes, already won.”

Method acting isn’t for everyone, but some derive a particular thrill from escaping into the personalities they play on screen. It’s a way to embody the character completely, surrendering to their will and whim within reason. Lady Gaga is a significant fan of the technique, as evidenced by the actress keeping her Italian accent while playing Patrizia Reggiani for Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci. She also stayed in character as Ally Maine for years leading up to 2018’s A Star is Born. While it’s possible to admire the dedication to playing a part, some find the practice frustrating and disruptive in the workplace. Take Lawrence Sher, for example, who’s the cinematographer for the Todd Phillips sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. During a recent podcast interview, Sher discussed feeling alienated by Gaga due to the star’s request to be called ‘Lee’ during filming.

Lady Gaga has sold millions and millions of records and tickets to shows over the course of her years-long singing career, but when it comes to acting, she seems to be fully committed to the art of performing on screen. That commitment includes the idea of going “method” on set, never breaking character even when cameras aren’t rolling. According to cinematographer Lawrence Sher, Gaga’s method created plenty of awkward moments on the set of “Joker: Folie à Deux.”
In a recent episode of The Trenches Talk, Lawrence Sher, the cinematographer on both “Joker” and the forthcoming “Joker: Folie à Deux,” spoke about his unique relationship with actress Stefani Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga, who plays Harley Quinn in the new film.

Stefani Germanotta has juggled a couple of different names throughout her life: Stef, Mother Monster, and, of course, Lady Gaga. But when it came time to star as Harley Quinn in Todd Phillips’ sequel to Joker, she wanted to use a completely different alias, according to cinematographer Larry Sher.
Sher was a guest on a recent episode of The Trenches Talk podcast to chat about Joker: Folie à Deux and Gaga’s on-set demeanor. Noting the pop star-turned actress’ “method” tendencies, Sher explained that he had a difficult time connecting with her at first.

Lady Gaga apparently didn’t want to be called by her actual name on the “Joker: Folie à Deux” set.
Cinematographer Lawrence Sher recalled how the singer — whose real name is Stefani Germanotta — wanted to go by the name “Lee” during filming.
Sher told “The Trenches Talk” podcast, “I remember I didn’t know Stefani at all and, strangely, I felt like I never even really met her, even during the makeup and hair test,” Entertainment Weekly reported.
“I remember for like a week being like, ‘God, I feel like we’re like disconnecting, not even connecting, we’re like, on opposites.’ I’d say to my crew, ‘Jesus, I can’t like crack it. I feel like she either hates me or we hate each other, or there’s something weird going on here.'”

Lawrence Sher, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer for “Joker,” revealed on “The Trenches Talk” podcast that he “never even met” Lady Gaga on the set of the sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” because she was presumably in character the whole time (via IndieWire). Gaga stars opposite returning lead Joaquin Phoenix in the 2024 comic book movie, which casts her as Harley Quinn opposite Phoenix’s Joker. Sher said it wasn’t until he started calling Gaga by the name “Lee” (presumably a nod to Harley) that she even warmed up to him.

Per the doc’s official logline, “like many Black artists throughout American recording history, his talent was strip-mined to enrich white-owned record labels. Weeks and his manager Jerome Derradji narrate the story of how they clawed back the rights to Weeks’ music and the ongoing fight to restore his legacy and share his music.”
“Growing up in NY, I was around some of the best disco music – I loved it. It inspired me. Richie, and many artists like him, helped influence the culture,” said Raekwon. “What happened to Richie is an example of something that happens all of the time in the music industry. I’m really glad I...

While there are plenty of people who can debate the merits of Todd Phillips’ Oscar-winning film, “Joker,” there is really no denying the film looks great. And a large part of that look falls on the shoulders of cinematographer Lawrence Sher. And in a new interview with Matti Haapoja, Sher went deep into breaking down the look of “Joker,” while also teasing one of the influences for the upcoming sequel.

One of the biggest question marks on the 2024 film calendar is “Joker: Folie à Deux.” For the sequel to his Oscar-winning DC villain origin story, Todd Phillips blew up his narrative formula by deciding to make a musical. Lady Gaga joined the franchise as Harley Quinn, but little is known about how Phillips plans to infuse music into his version of Gotham. Film history is not exactly littered with superhero musicals, so it can be difficult for outside observers to gauge what his points of reference might be.
However, cinematographer Lawrence Sher might have given fans one of their first big hints about the film’s influences. Sher, who shot both “Joker” and “Folie à Deux,” recently revealed that he used an infamous Francis Ford Coppola musical as a point of reference. In an interview with YouTuber Matti Haapoja, Sher listed Coppola’s 1981 film “One from the Heart” as one...

Many were pleased to learn of Greig Fraser’s (“The Batman”) inclusion among the American Society of Cinematographers’ five nominees for the 37th annual ASC Awards. The reigning Oscar and ASC champ for “Dune” is the fourth Dp nominated by the guild for lensing Gotham City. Stephen Goldblatt (1995’s “Batman Forever), Wally Pfister (2005’s “Batman Begins” and 2008’s “The Dark Knight”) and Lawrence Sher (2019’s “Joker”) also received bids for their work on the most awarded comic book franchise in history. Perhaps what has always distinguished the DC property for voters are the undertones of classic noir that this iteration in particular emphasizes.

You can be the destroyer of this world…or you can be its Savior
Black Adam is finally out, and if you haven’t seen it, do. While the first thing that separates the character from a lot of the other superhero movies in the genre, is that, for starters, he’s not a hero. He’s an antihero in its near purest form. Dwayne Johnson, master of shameless self promotion has been touting the greatness of this film for a while now, and this time, beyond a shadow of a doubt, he’s right. And what Black Adam believes is right comes from a place of ultimate struggle… and sacrifice.

Black Adam received a last-minute jolt thanks to a post-credits scene restoring Henry Cavill to the role of Superman.
Negotiating Cavill’s return for the first time since 2017’s Justice League was hard-fought and came down to the wire, with the Black Adam team filming Dwayne Johnson’s half of the scene not knowing if the stars would even align for Cavill’s return.
“If we can get Henry to be in it, then we’ll figure that out on a future date,” cinematographer Lawrence Sher recalls in the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast.

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains mild spoilers for “Black Adam.”
It’s kind of a cheat, casting someone as massive as Dwayne Johnson to play a DC superhero — or antihero, in the case of “Black Adam,” an action-packed, adolescent-skewing stand-alone that presents the swole Samoan star as a nearly invincible global threat. Black Adam is basically an A-bomb in human form, whose emergence from a 5,000-year lockdown calls for emergency intervention by the Justice Society of America, or Jsa, which dispatches four glorified benchwarmers to contain the situation: Hawkman, Atom Smasher, Cyclone and Doctor Fate.
Ex-wrestler The Rock is built on an altogether different scale from everyone else in the DC universe (the next-closest hulk would be “Aquaman” star Jason Momoa), suggesting by body type alone that he could beat anyone “from this planet.” Wink wink. Was it an accident or shrewd marketing strategy that leaked an end-credits scene...

Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lawrence Sher — whose credits include The Hangover, Joker and upcoming Black Adam — urged the next generation of cinematographers to take risks as he accepted the Distinguished Filmmaker Award at the International Cinematographers Guild (Local 600) Emerging Cinematographer Awards.
“Continue to take risks. … and be gentle and kind to yourself. [Your honored work] is incredible. You are risk takers. At ever stage of my career I tried not to think of the same path [and] dropped the safety net.”
Following a montage of his work, including some memorable moments from hit comedy The Hangover, he quipped, “I make a living shooting dumb shit.

The first-ever feature film to explore the story of the uncompromising DC antihero comes to the big screen under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra (“Jungle Cruise”). Johnson tackled an age-old question: who would win in a fight, Black Adam or Superman? Earlier in the week, rumors circulated that Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill might show up or send a video message for the panel, but that didn’t come to fruition.
Said the actor of a matchup between the DC characters: “Pound for pound, they are pretty close. I guess it probably all depends on who is playing Superman.

The International Cinematographers Guild (Local 600) dedicated a Saturday panel discussion to on-set safety following a year during which this was a critical topic, driven by the ratification of a new IATSE Basic Agreement — which, following divisive contract negotiations and a threatened strike, was ratified last fall by a narrow margin of votes — and before the topic was amplified by the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust.
A culture where everyone plays a role in safety on movie and TV sets is vital, Guild members asserted during the discussion at Cine Gear Expo, the annual cinematography equipment show taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Mike Mills’ A24 film C’mon C’mon triumphed at the 2021 EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, celebrating the art of cinematography—claiming its high honor, the Golden Frog, along with its Audience Award.
Cinematographer Robbie Ryan’s Golden Frog win gives him new momentum as a 2022 Oscar contender, on the heels of his first nomination in 2019 for his work on Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite. While only handful of past winners since the festival’s founding in 1993 have gone on to secure the Best Cinematography Oscar, 12 of 30 have nabbed nominations. Colleagues of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the Dp fatally shot on the set of “Rust” in New Mexico last month in an apparent accidental discharge of a prop gun, paid tribute to her vision and skill at the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, an event dedicated to the art of cinematography, on Sunday. Hutchins, who was 42 and has been remembered throughout the film industry as a talented artist, died from her injuries after being hit along with director Joel Souza, who is recovering from his injuries.
Actor Alec Baldwin, an actor in “Rust” as well as a producer, fired the prop gun during a scene rehearsal and has told investigators he had no idea the weapon was loaded with a dangerous round. He has since been sued by a crew member over safety issues on set, an issue that has also prompted the ire of George Clooney, who has called the shooting “insane and infuriating.

Acclaimed cinematographers and ASC members Michael Chapman and Allen Daviau, who both died last year, were the focus of a legacy panel at EnergaCamerimage Film Festival on Monday, led by the likes of Lawrence Sher (“Joker”), Xavier Pérez Grobet (“Watchmen”), Amy Vincent (‘Footloose”) and Seamus McGarvey (“Atonement”).
Nominated for five Oscars for his work on “Bugsy,” “Avalon,” “Empire of the Sun,” “The Color Purple” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” Daviau won the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, but he was remembered also for his aversion to cars.
“I would follow him around in a supermarket, not to see what he was buying, but hoping to say hello.

Then I acquired the responsibility of driving him to a whole bunch of different events,” said Vincent. “There are not many of us who did not have the experience of driving him, sometimes conveniently and sometimes not.”

The first look at director Jaume Collet-Serra’s “Black Adam” was revealed during the DC FanDome virtual event on Saturday, giving “Shazam!” fans an early glimpse at this spinoff starring Dwayne “The Rock Johnson” as that character’s arch-nemesis. The film also stars Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Sarah Shahi, Quintessa Swindell, and Pierce Brosnan. Watch below.
Johnson stars as the title character, also known as Teth-Adam, who hails from the land of Kahndaq, where he was imprisoned for 5,000 years. He now shares his powers with an ancient wizard. Centineo plays Atom Smasher, a member of the Justice Society of America with the power to control his molecular structure and manipulate his own size and strength. Hodge plays Hawkman, an archaeologist who also happens to be the reincarnation of an Egyptian prince, and who can fly using metal wings. He is also the leader of the Justice Society of America.

This review of “The Starling” was first published after the film’s premiere at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival.
Sometimes things aren’t always what they seem: “The Starling,” for example, is an impressively credited drama that premiered at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival on its way to Netflix. So viewers may be surprised to find they’ve happened upon a movie that would feel far more at home on the Hallmark Channel.
Then again, sometimes things are exactly what they seem. And in nearly every other way, predictability defines Ted Melfi’s disappointing follow-up to his widely-admired Oscar nominee “Hidden Figures” and his enjoyably prickly indie “St. Vincent.”
Just as its name announces, “The Starling” is all about learning to fly. This increasingly blunt metaphor includes an actual avian, who swoops through the opening credits in a clunky effect that simultaneously recollects the plastic bag from “American Beauty” and the “Forrest Gump” feather.

Stephen Lighthill has been re-elected president of the American Society of Cinematographers. He was elevated to the post last year, having previously served as president from 2012-13. He will serve his next one-year term alongside vice presidents Amy Vincent, Steven Fierberg and John Simmons; treasurer Steven Poster; secretary Gregg Heschong, and sergeant-at-arms Jim Denault, who were elected by the Society’s board of governors.
“As we safely emerge from the pandemic, we plan to continue to share our expertise on best practices for remote solutions and virtual production in service to the artistic process of filmmaking,” Lighthill said. “We also remain focused on recruiting diverse and inclusive crews as well as supporting underrepresented filmmakers through our scholarship and mentorship programs.”

When Ross Riege was in initial conversations for “Rutherford Falls” with fellow cinematographer and now director Lawrence Sher (Dp on Todd Phillips’ “Joker”), one of the ideas was how to explore the quirkiness of a small town.
The new Peacock sitcom, which premiered April 22, stars Ed Helms as Nathan Rutherford, a descendant of the town’s founder, who is on a mission to stop the removal of the burg’s emblematic statue. Not only is the statue the cause of numerous car accidents, but it has a problematic history.
The Coen brothers’ “Fargo” served as the main visual reference for the way the filmmakers portrayed the community and those within it. “It was this classic thing of what character the town plays, as well as what the characters play,” explains Riege.
The Dp describes Nathan as someone who is lovable and has the best of intentions, “but he doesn’t realize his history.

Mentoring emerging cinematographers has always been a key mission at the EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival and this year’s online version of the event features a score of streaming master classes and seminars that inform and offer insights from top filmmakers and technology experts.
Streaming through the end of 2020 (online.energacamerimage.pl), the talks and teach-ins are, with rare exceptions, accessible without a password or online Camerimage entry card – unlike the usual live format of master classes at the festival, which invariably sell out if you don’t find a seat at least 20 minutes before the start.
One of the buzziest events from the festival, which officially ran Nov. 13-20, is the virtual career masterclass with cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, in which he discusses his remarkable career, leading up to his latest feature, Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

Now in its second year back in the city where it was born, the EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival has partnered with the Torun council in Poland and the national government in funding its most ambitious project, the European Film Center Camerimage, a $155 million facility now entering the architecture bidding stage. Torun mayor Michał Zaleski has been a strong advocate for returning the renowned cinematography fest to the city and advocating for funding its future home as a strategic regional investment.
Why is EnergaCamerimage important to Torun at this particular moment and what does the city gain from hosting the festival?
The EnergaCamerimage Film Festival was founded in Torun in 1993 and it showed its potential in the very first editions. Its unique formula of putting the spotlight on the art of cinematography got it noticed worldwide very fast, while the festival’s artistic quality became a clear signal for the film...

He topped Rodrigo Prieto for “The Irishman,” Lawrence Sher for “Joker,” Robert Richardson for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Jarin Blaschke for “The Lighthouse.”
In his acceptance speech, Deakins gave thanks to his crew and concluded by saying, “I think they would all want me to say thanks to Sam Mendes.”
