The Best Supporting Actor category will see fierce competition this year at the 97th Academy Awards. Forget voting for a winner, the Academy will be scratching their heads to come up with the five nominees. Before the announcement of final nominees, FandomWire predicts the top 5 contenders and another 4 actors who could become Robert Downey Jr.’s successor.

Interestingly, our top five for the nominees have never won an Oscar, despite one of them receiving three nominations including two Best Supporting Actor nods. However, three of these contenders have Emmys to their names to show for. And the other nominee is making waves this award season, with nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and BAFTAs.

The Producers Guild Awards nominations list hit inboxes on Thursday morning, one day after nominations for the 2025 BAFTA Awards and 2025 Writers Guild Awards were revealed. This further clarified the muddy and complicated Oscar race for Best Picture. Ahead, which movies are up and which are down as Oscar voting hits its final hours. The 2025 Oscar nominations will be announced next week.
Up: Anora and A Complete Unknown
There’s a caveat to this stat (more on that below), but of this year’s Best Picture contenders, only Anora and A Complete Unknown can tout nominations from the four top industry guilds, and the BAFTA Awards in the Best Film category. Most expected Anora to be here — Sean Baker’s film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year and has been a frontrunner for Best Picture in the Gold Derby odds for months. Adrien Brody is well on his way to potentially win a second Oscar with his recent film The Brutalist. However, what many don’t know is that he once eyed the role that brought Heath Ledger his posthumous Oscar. Adrien Brody appeared in a podcast on January 16th, discussing his eventful career.

During the conversation, the host asked the actor if it was true that he once talked to Christopher Nolan about The Dark Knight. Brody admitted he did in fact have his interpretation of Joker. Especially as he felt suited for the role at the time.
However, he is glad that it was Ledger who played the part because of what a phenomenal job he did. Nevertheless, he also confessed that it would be amazing if he managed to come across anything similar to that again, as it was such a dream role.

When the 2025 Oscars nominations are announced on Jan. 23 at 5:30 a.m. Pt, expect Emilia Pérez to be on top.
According to Gold Derby predictions, the Netflix musical dramedy is poised to receive 11 bids — more than any other contender — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña). That would be two fewer than last year’s nominations leader Oppenheimer at 13, but on par with 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once at 11 — both of which won Best Picture.
Close behind with 10 forecasted noms is A24’s The Brutalist, starring Best Actor frontrunner Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor who tries to live out the American Dream in the 1940s and 1950s. Expect nominations for Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce), per Gold Derby odds.

"Tell me – why is an accomplish foreign architect shoveling coal here in Philadelphia?" A24 has unveiled one more official trailer for the monumental The Brutalist, the third feature from acclaimed filmmaker / actor Brady Corbet. After already opening in theaters last year, it's getting a full IMAX run this weekend for anyone who needs to see it. When visionary architect László Toth & his wife Erzsébet flee Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern America, their lives are changed forever by an extremely wealthy benefactor - a man named Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr. Made by director Brady Corbet, written by Brady Corbet & Mona Fastvold, it stars Adrien Brody as László, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird, with Isaach De Bankolé, and Alessandro Nivola. Shot on film and projected on film (in 35mm & 70mm). I'm one of many who have already been calling this a masterpiece,...

Conclave Leads Nominations (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Hollywood’s award season has already warmed up the new year; the Golden Globes successfully separated favorites from potential surprises, and nominations for SAG and Critics Choice Awards have already been unveiled. Now, the British Academy Film Awards have followed suit.
While Hollywood is fighting the cataclysmic California wildfires, postponing forthcoming ceremonies and extending Academy Awards submission dates, fortunately, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, the British Isles face no such threat. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced nominees across 26 categories, recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema.
Doctor Who actor David Tennant, last year’s host, will return to lead the ceremony. This year marks one of the most competitive lineups, with no clear frontrunners and several close races. Conclave leads with 12 nominations, followed closely by Emilia Pérez with 11. Anora director Sean Baker achieved a historic six individual nods,...

It seems Timothée Chalamet needs to stick to rolling up to movie premieres in cars.
Earlier this week, the actor went viral for arriving at the London premiere of A Complete Unknown on a Lime bike. In photos shared online (below), Chalamet could be seen sporting a navy blue suit, paired with a lime green and white bike.
Lime bikes are electric bicycles that can be rented in major cities from the Lime transportation company.
However, he recently revealed on the talk show Quotidien, while promoting the biopic in France, that he actually got a 65 pound fine that night, which equates to $79.53, for not parking the bike properly.
Chalamet explained that while a bike is more eco-friendly, he actually opted out of taking a car to make it to the premiere on time as there was a traffic jam. And though he made it to the premiere, it ultimately cost him.

Picturehouse Central saw the arrival of Brady Corbett’s The Brutalist this evening for the film’s UK Premiere. The epic film has conquered America’s film-going crowd over the last few weeks, and now it’s our turn to see what all the fuss is about. We reviewed the film last year in Venice and… well, it’s one of the films of the year.
Directed by Brady Corbet, the cast includes Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn.
The movie hits cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 24th January 2025. Colin Hart and Ethan Hart were on the red carpet, here are their interviews.

The cast of the award-winning movie The Brutalist stepped out together for the UK premiere sans co-star Joe Alwyn, who was doing press elsewhere.

How did Daniel Craig miss at BAFTA? Is A Complete Unknown coming on like a freight train? Gold Derby experts and editors Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng break down the 2025 BAFTA Awards nominations on Awards Magnet.
A week after scoring a surprise Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Actor for Queer, Craig was even more surprisingly Awol from BAFTA’s nominations list that has an extra sixth spot. Hugh Grant (Heretic) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) made it in alongside the predicted Oscar top four of Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave). How could the erstwhile Bond be excluded on home turf? That was always a possibility since Heretic is a greater box office success, and said home turf enormously liked The Apprentice, which converted three of its longlist mentions into nominations. Queer? Craig was its sole longlist showing.

The 2025 BAFTA nominations had its share of snubs and surprises, some less so than others (Denzel Washington missing again is just par for the course now). The final televised precursor — and an industry one to boot — made the acting categories even messier while ostensibly taking other contenders out of the running. Here’s where we’re at with all four races post-bafta nominations.

Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Send up the white smoke, people.
Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her new life. The film is nominated in 11 categories. Audiard is nominated for Director, while the film itself is up for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language. It is the most musical or music-inspired year in the British Academy’s history as Wicked, A Complete Unknown, and Emilia Pérez all scored BAFTA Film Awards nominations on Wednesday.
Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical closely follows the leader, Conclave, with 11 nominations, including performance nominations for its three main actresses, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldaña. Director Audiard scored three nods, namely for best director, adapted screenplay and best film not in the English language. Plus, Paul Guilhaume is nominated for cinematography and Camille, Clement Ducol for their original score.
Jon M. Chu’s Broadway adaptation of the beloved musical Wicked (which scooped up the box office prize at the recent Golden Globes) picked up a healthy seven BAFTA nominations, including Cynthia Erivo‘s first main BAFTA award nomination ever in the leading actress category for her portrayal of Elphaba, as well as a supporting actress nod for Galinda/Glinda Ariana Grande.

Despite making the BAFTA Film Awards longlist, Daniel Craig was notably missing when the final nominees were unveiled Wednesday.
The Queer star was not recognized among his peers Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Hugh Grant (Heretic), Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Colman Domingo for prison drama Sing Sing, Timothée Chalamet for Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, and Sebastian Stan for his portrayal of Donald Trump in The Apprentice, who all made the shortlist.
Craig was nominated for Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and SAG awards, though has been what many would call snubbed by the British Academy in his native U.K. He was part of The Hollywood Reporter‘s actor roundtable last month.
Beloved by Brits for his iconic role in the James Bond franchise, Craig took on the lead part in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer. He played William Lee, an American expat in his mid-50s leading a solitary existence in Mexico City.

“Conclave” leads the pack of 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominees with 12 nods, one more than “Emilia Pérez,” which had appeared on the most BAFTA longlists (15) when they were announced on Jan. 3.

The British academy nominated “Conclave” for best film, outstanding British film, best director (for Edward Berger), lead actor (Ralph Fiennes), supporting actress (Isabella Rossellini), and adapted screenplay (Peter Straughan). “Emilia Pérez” picked up nods for best film, director (Jacques Audiard), lead actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), supporting actress (Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña) and adapted screenplay (Audiard).
“The Brutalist,” meanwhile, received nine nominations, including best film, director (Brady Corbet) and actor (Adrien Brody), followed by seven each for “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked.” Of those three, only “Anora” made the cut for best film and director (Sean Baker). The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in – here’s a look at the snubs and the snub-ies.
With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.
It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.
Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

Blessed be Edward Berger, whose Vatican drama Conclave is now officially the front-runner in this year’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations.
The Ralph Fiennes- and Stanley Tucci-starring film, based on the novel by Robert Harris, leads the way with 12 BAFTA nominations — ahead of Emilia Pérez‘s 11 and The Brutalist‘s nine, as unveiled by actors Will Sharpe and Mia McKenna-Bruce from the British Academy’s headquarters in London mid-day on Wednesday.
Among others, Conclave is in the running for best film, outstanding British film, best director for Oscar winner Berger, leading actor for Fiennes and adapted screenplay for Peter Straughan. Isabella Rossellini is also nominated in the supporting actress category.

Conclave led all films with 12 nominations, including bids for Best Film, Best British Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, and Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini. Unlike last year, there isn’t a clear favorite to win the Best Actor category at the 97th Academy Awards, making it a healthy and interesting competition. There were some incredible performances that were duly appreciated in cinemas this year. When the Academy announces its list of nominees on January 17, 2025, five out of these nine actors will probably make it to the final selection.

Over two decades ago, a young actor by the name of Adrien Brody shocked fans and critics across the world with his impeccable portrayal of the celebrated musician Władysław Szpilman in The Pianist (2002). Brody won the Academy Award for Best Actor for that role, becoming the youngest actor (at 29) to achieve this honor.

An actor’s life is not all about the glitz and glamor that comes with fame. From being on the receiving end of harsh criticism to going through extremes for a role, the profession does take a toll on people. Speaking of extremes, we cannot think of a better example than Adrien Brody in The Pianist (2002). It is no secret that he often takes on roles that challenge him and make him push himself but it was The Pianist that has left a deep gash on his soul.

One month ago, we asked Gemini AI for Oscar predictions, and it endorsed Gladiator II as a contender for picture, director (Ridley Scott), and supporting actor (Denzel Washington). Well, Google’s artificial intelligence bot has rebooted, and it now believes the mixed-reviewed sequel will be mostly forgotten come Oscars time. In fact, Gemini’s current picks in the six main categories align much more closely with Gold Derby’s overall choices.

It won multiple Golden Globes — for Best Picture – Drama, Best Actor for Adrien Brody and Best Director — last Sunday.
This is another fine indie weekend as Hard Truths by iconic filmmaker Mike Leigh saw $165k at 22 theaters, a strong opening, despite severe weather in the south and the ongoing fire crisis in LA.
The Last Showgirl rounded out the top 10 on its debut weekend.
Holdovers Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown and Babygirl are at nos. 4, 6 and 8 respectively.
Indie distributors are now wondering if arthouses that gravitated to wide-release studios films since Covid may want to rethink.

Lionsgate’s heist thriller “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” stole the box office crown, debuting at No. 1 with $15.5 million from 3,008 North American theaters.
The sequel to 2018’s “Den of Thieves” opened on the higher end of expectations and landed about even with its predecessor’s $15.2 million launch. The first film also opened in January and powered to $80 million globally by the end of its theatrical run. The second installment needs an even better display of staying power because it carries a $40 million production budget. Moviegoers liked the film more than critics; “Den of Thieves 2” earned a “B+” grade on CinemaScore and a 58% average on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. Gerard Butler stars as Big Nick, a gritty Los Angeles police officer on the hunt in Europe to track down ex-marine-turned-robber Donnie (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) who is plotting a massive diamond heist.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson for Wbgr-fm on January 9th, 2025, reviewing “The Brutalist” co-written and directed by Brady Corbet. In select theaters since January 10th, wider release to follow. See local listings.
The story is about Laszlo Toth (Adrian Brody), who comes to America after World War II and his concentration camp experiences, to first work at his cousin’s furniture business and subsequently take on designing jobs, as he was a notable architect who worked in Poland before the war. When wealthy client Harrison (Guy Pierce) is appalled with Laszlo’s design work on a surprise home project, the architect runs away and becomes a drifter and a junkie. When that small project later turns out to be a sensation, Harrison reaches out to find Laszlo, then commissions a building from him, and as part of that new project helps...

A time like now, as fires rage around Los Angeles, makes awards season start to feel just a little more insignificant than, in the grand scheme, it already is. This week, events like the AFI luncheon and Critics Choice Awards ceremony were postponed. So were the Oscar nominations themselves, moved from Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19, with voting extended to January 14 to give people extra time to fill in their ballots. Will that matter, and is that what people in Hollywood really care about right now?
These are questions we ask on the latest episode of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast before diving into a debate and speculation around how a flurry of awards nominations and wins coming in from the past week will impact the Oscars. The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations left out Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. The Directors Guild of America award nominations went...

Like a rolling stone gathers no moss, Timothee Chalamet’s awards campaign for A Complete Unknown continues unabated. On Friday, NBC announced Chalamet will host the Jan. 25 edition of Saturday Night Live and serve as the night’s musical guest. The expectation is that Chalamet, who plays Bob Dylan in the new film, will perform Dylan songs on the broadcast.
Regardless of the playlist, Chalamet’s dual role on the broadcast will make some Saturday Night Live history. He’s among a select few non-professional singers or traditional musicians who have served as SNL hosts and performed as musicians on the same show, joining names like Lily Tomlin, Desi Arnaz, and Deion Sanders.
The SNL appearance is the latest high-profile stop on Chalamet’s press tour and awards campaign for A Complete Unknown. The actor has spent the last month promoting his work in James Mangold’s film – including a...
