Pierce Brosnan seems to have had several notable false starts in his career. In what might be an infamous story, Brosnan was to play James Bond in the 1987 film "The Living Daylights" right after production was set to wrap on the fourth, and presumed final, season of his modestly successful TV series, "Remington Steele." The story goes that "Steele" was to be replaced by the Fred Dryer cop show "Hunter," freeing up Brosnan to step into the high-profile role of 007 and his co-star Stephanie Zimbalist to take the role of Anne Lewis in Paul Verhoeven's "RoboCop" (the part that would eventually taken by Nancy Allen). Ironically, Brosnan signing onto play James Bond saw a sudden new wave of interest in "Remington Steele," and NBC unexpectedly renewed the show for a fifth season. As Brosnan told the Irish Times:
"I'd done all the photos with the iconic gun pose. And...

Fred Dryer appeared on the latest episode of NCIS. It led to a lot of viewers wanting to know more about him and the role that he played. Love was clearly in the air when Ted Danson met Mary Steenburgen on a five-hour canoe ride on California’s Big River during filming of the otherwise forgettable 1994 movie Pontiac Moon. "We paddled in sync," Ted tells Closer. "We went out as friends and by the time we came back, we were in love." Making it all the sweeter, both Ted, 70, and Mary, 65, had been through rocky romantic waters beforehand and had given up on love. "I announced to all my friends — not dramatically, but very seriously — that I was done with relationships," says Mary, then a single mother of two. The twice-divorced Ted had reached the same conclusion. "Ironic how life works in those moments," he says. "Once you throw up your arms and surrender, a lot of times things come your way." That’s the kind of wisdom Ted attained from a young age, when he grew up...

This is either going to be really good or so bad, it’s great. But either way, ABC’s relaunch of Battle of the Network Stars (premiering Thursday, June 29 at 9/8c) is looking like the summer’s must-see — especially since on Tuesday the full list of competitors was released. The celebrities we’re most psyched to see throwing down in events like the kayak relay race and dunk tank:

"Marvel's Agents of Shield" is back from its winter hiatus, and I have a review of tonight's episode coming up just as soon as I pass around the talking stick... Much as I enjoyed the first half of "Shield" season 2, the brief run of "Agent Carter" in its place did this show no favors. "Shield" is much improved over its first season, but it still has a tendency to try to do too much all at once, and that overstuffed quality was especially apparent tonight after spending a couple of months in the very streamlined world of Peggy Carter. Even with Ward and the May doppelganger out of action this week, "Shield" has so many moving parts at the moment that the show frequently has to take shortcuts for both plot mechanics and emotional beats. Fitz doing a 180 off-camera about Skye's super powers didn't really work, and the notion that...

Let’s just get this out of the way now: Amongst we ComicMixers, the esteemed (and far prettier) Emily S. Whitten is a bigger and better fan of voice actors than I shall ever be. With that being said… aren’t voice actors amazing?
You see, in between bouts of crippling sinusitis and binge-watching Breaking Bad like I was addicted to meth, I opted to catch John Dimaggio’s documentary I Know That Voice. A fantastic little flick dedicated in celebration of a continually (mostly) unsung hero of the animated world: the voice performer. With interviews from some – if not most – of the current tribe of working actors and actresses who lend their larynx to the cartoons of the day, I simply must recommend watching it yourself soon if you haven’t already.

Hunger (Criterion) Harrowing true story of imprisoned Ira member Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender) and his 1981 hunger strike protesting the British government’s refusal to recognize him, and other Ira members as political prisoners. Director Steve McQueen delivers the story with true filmmaking panache, mixing startling imagery that blends both stunning beauty and stomach-churning horror. Fassbender is absolutely brilliant in the lead. Not for the faint-of-heart, but not to be missed or, particularly, ignored. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Adam (20th Century Fox) Quirky romantic comedy about an eccentric, borderline Asperger’s Syndrome, astronomy buff (Hugh Dancy) who is drawn out of his self-imposed shell by a beautiful and sympathetic neighbor (Rose Byrne). Charming film with engaging performances by the two leads,...

I have spent most of my career reporting on and studying sports and entertainment. Athletes and actors have very similar personality traits. In fact, many athletes secretly harbor acting aspirations and plenty of actors wish they could have been pro ballplayers and wind up playing in celebrity all-star games and pro ams.
Some athletes successfully made the transition, like The Dirty Dozen’s Jim Brown, Fred Dryer (TV’s Hunter), My Name Is Earl’s Jason Lee (pro skateboarder) and former Laker Rick Fox (Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns). Others have provided comic relief like Kareem Abdul Jabaar (Airplane!) Julius Irving in 1979’s The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh and, most ridiculous of all, Shaquile O’Neal in Kazaam.
The difficult decision that athletes and actors have in common is when to quit. In baseball, Hall of Famer Willie Mayes lumbered through the outfield for the Mets at Shea Stadium well past his prime,...

Reviewing the Adult Swim DVDs has been educational and occasionally entertaining. I find the third series, Frisky Dingo Season Two, the most enjoyable because it takes absurd situations and characters and uses smart humor to get its point across. The series, about Killface, an alien super-villain come to Earth and his struggles against the heroic Awesome X, pokes fun at the conventions of animation, super-heroics and action flicks. They ratchet things up in season two, collected here, as Killface finds himself accidentally solving Global Warming and running for president.
