Cowboy Carter has arrived in areas of the world where it’s already Friday — i.e., New Zealand and Australia — and more details about Beyoncé’s new album have emerged.
Yesterday’s reveal of the Cowboy Carter track list confirmed that the album featured her long-rumored cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” but the Australasian release also brings news that “Blackbiird” — stylized with double i’s on the track list — is actually a cover of the Beatles’ White Album classic “Blackbird,” a song that Paul McCartney penned in tribute to the Little Rock Nine.

“Mellow Yellow” by Donovan is the most beloved 1960s song with the word “yellow” in the title that wasn’t released by The Beatles. During an interview, the “Atlantis” singer opined that his catalog was a lot more diverse than The Beatles’, to the point where he sounded like a completely different artist from song to song. Donovan also said something about his background made him similar to George Harrison, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. While “Mellow Yellow” might be one of the most unusual hits of the period, it wouldn’t be the same without a little help from Paul.
Donovan said ‘Mellow Yellow’ and ‘Barabajagal’ were more original than any Beatles songs
During a 2016 interview with Best Classic Bands, a reporter asked Donovan why “Mellow Yellow” was so different from the rest of his catalog. “Why were they all so different?” he replied. “I displayed more of the painterly,...

Taylor Swift and Prince are two of the biggest pop stars in American history, but their musical styles could not be more different. Despite this, Swift compared one of the hit songs she wrote to Prince’s “Manic Monday.” Notably, Swift gave the song away to another pop icon.
Taylor Swift’s ‘This Is What You Came For’ was inspired by Prince’s ‘Manic Monday’
Every great pop star has written at least one hit song for another artist. For example, George Harrison co-wrote Ringo Starr’s “Photograph,” Kesha co-wrote Britney Spears’ “Till the World Ends,” and Charli Xcx co-wrote Selena Gomez’s “Same Old Love.” Swift checked that off of her pop star bucket list when she wrote Rihanna’s “This Is What You Came For” with Calvin Harris. At first, Swift was credited under the name Nils Sjöberg. At this point, her role in writing the song has been widely reported.

Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer says the next installment in the fantasy supernatural swashbuckler film series will reboot the entire franchise.
The legendary producer shared the update with ComicBook when asked about the future of his hit franchises Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean. "It's hard to tell. You don't know, you really don't know," Bruckheimer explained, referring to which may return to the big screen first. "You don't know how they come together. You just don't know because, with Top Gun, you have [Tom Cruise] who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can't tell you. But we're gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors."

Drake Bell was as much of an icon to 2000s kids as John Lennon was to the children of the 1960s. During an interview, the Drake & Josh star explained why he had a tattoo inspired by one of John’s most famous quotations. The quotation appeared in one of the former Beatle’s most enduring songs.

While The Beatles and The Rolling Stones both led the charge during the British Invasion, they had wildly different public images. Mick Jagger’s girlfriend explained why The Beatles were seen as good boys and The Rolling Stones were seen as bad boys. Notably, John Lennon revealed that he was a huge fan of one Rolling Stones song.
Marianne Faithfull said The Rolling Stones were sexier than The Beatles
Marianne Faithfull was Jagger’s girlfriend in the 1960s. She’s most famous for a pair of ballads: “As Tears Go By,” which was co-written by Jagger and Keith Richards, and a cover of The Beatles’ “Yesterday.” If anyone has the right to pontificate on the differences between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, it’s her.

Marianne Faithfull is a singer who served as a muse for The Rolling Stones‘ Mick Jagger. She said The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is darker than it seems upon first listen. Notably, John Lennon was not the biggest fan of the record.
Marianne Faithfull said The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’ is ‘very weird’
Faithfull is a singer most known for her hit “As Tears Go By” and her cover of The Beatles’ “Yesterday.” In her 2008 book Memories, Dreams & Recollections, the singer wrote about her feelings about the Fab Four. “Their sweetness is very superficial,” he said. “You hear the undercurrent in Paul’s bass playing, you hear it in John’s harmonies, you hear it in the call-and-response stuff. The Marvel Cinematic Universe won't be the only MCU in Hollywood if actor Timothée Chalamet gets his way.
Currently, Chalamet is riding the success of Dune: Part Two after the sequel's recent release in theaters. As for what's next, the actor is now working on A Complete Unknown, a biopic that will star Chalamet as legendary musician Bob Dylan. In an interview with NME, Chalamet talked about how he was speaking with Dune: Part Two co-star Austin Butler about how to properly play a music icon, given Butler's acclaimed performance in Elvis. Chalamet also said he hoped to get Butler involved with A Complete Unknown, given how Elvis made an appearance in Walk the Line, going on to say a came from the King in the Bob Dylan biopic could have been the start of a new MCU --- the Musical Cinematic Universe.

Sam Mendes is directing four separate Beatles movies, potentially creating a potential shared universe. The quartet of Beatles films may follow the McU's trend, but risks mirroring its recent mistakes. The planned Beatles movie universe could either reignite the shared universe concept or meet the fate of the Dceu.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been very successful since its 2008 inception, and this popularity has inspired countless would-be threats to the throne. Many of these have come and gone, but an upcoming quartet of movies might offer the most interesting take on the concept. Sadly, it might also be following in the footsteps of the McU's most recent mistakes.

In the 1970s, Pattie Boyd lived the unique experience of having two rock stars, George Harrison and Eric Clapton, fight over her. She married Harrison in 1966 and soon, Clapton began expressing interest in her. According to her, the two men were emotionally immature. They dealt with the complicated situation in the only way they knew: by having a guitar battle.

By the time The Beatles broke up, Boyd and Harrison’s relationship had reached a rough patch. He treated her coldly and was far more interested in his spiritual development than in their marriage.

Cinema history is full of missed opportunities. For example, a Beatles movie almost featured David Bowie as a character from a Beatles song. Instead, a famous comedian got the role. A member of the film’s cast revealed what she thought about this development.
David Bowie almost played Mr. Kite in a Beatles movie
Across the Universe is a Fab Four jukebox musical set in a heightened version of the 1960s. Several characters in the movie are named after figures from Beatles songs, including Jude, Lucy, Maxwell, Sexy Sadie, and Mr. Kite.
During a 2018 interview with Vulture, director Julie Taymor discussed the role of Mr. Kite. “We rehearsed it like a normal musical in theater … and it bonded everybody,” he said. “I’ll never forget [star] Evan [Rachel Wood] walking in the hallways with this Bowie T-shirt, because at one point we’d asked David Bowie if he was going to play Mr.

The Billboard 200 measures the commercial performance of the top albums during the weekly tracking period from Friday through Thursday. While the charts used to be determined just by record sales, the evolving technological landscape has prompted Billboard to adjust its methodology in the 21st century.
One of the most significant alterations came in 2014 when Billboard transitioned to a combination of factors including online streams and individual track sales in addition to the traditional album sales that previously made up the entirety of the Billboard 200’s measurement. Now an album sale counts as one album unit. Sales of 10 individual tracks also counts as a unit. And you need 3,750 ad-supported streams or 1,250 paid subscription streams to equal one unit. In 2020 Billboard also started considering streams of music videos on platforms like YouTube.

In Yesterday Jack's rise to stardom with Beatles music is based on a lie, leading to a dilemma with his newfound fame. The Yesterday movie ending leaves the world without the Beatles, sparking questions about the reality-altering blackout. Yesterday celebrates the timeless impact of the Beatles' music, highlighting the enduring power of their songs.
The Yesterday movie ending does something totally unexpected with the world it envisions where the Beatles never existed. In Yesterday, a struggling British musician named Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) becomes the only person in the world (or so he thinks) who remembers the Beatles and their music. He soon becomes a global pop superstar by claiming the songs John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr as his own. Yesterday's reality-altering event is a sudden global blackout. For 12 seconds, the entire world lost power at 12:01 am. When electricity was restored, everything resumed as normal,...

After John Lennon completed his album Two Virgins, he took the cover photo to Ringo Starr to view. This was a moment The Beatles drummer said he would never forget. He was shocked by the nudity in the image and slightly annoyed that he’d likely have to answer questions about it. Still, his first instinct was to point to an extremely minor detail in order to draw attention away from Lennon’s nudity.
Ringo Starr recalled how he felt when John Lennon showed him the ‘Two Virgins’ cover
In 1968, Lennon and Yoko Ono released Two Virgins. They worked on the album at the very start of their relationship and wanted to express that they were freshly in love. They also wanted to use the album to bare themselves to the public. To achieve this, they took a very literal route, posing completely naked on the album cover.

John Lennon notoriously spoke out against much of Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles music. He even criticized the work McCartney did while in the band. McCartney took a similar stance against one of Lennon’s albums. Though he wrote liner notes for Two Virgins, McCartney didn’t think the album was all that good. Still, he took credit for parts of it.
Paul McCartney wasn’t a fan of one John Lennon album
In 1968, Lennon and Yoko Ono released Two Virgins, the first of three experimental albums they put out as a couple. The album drew major controversy for its cover; Lennon and Ono posed fully naked for it. The other Beatles fielded questions from reporters about it, to their frustration.
McCartney claimed that the cover raised his eyebrows, but he didn’t find it overly shocking. His bigger problem was that he didn’t much like the contents of the album.

When The Beatles traveled to India in 1968, Ringo Starr made sure to pack a lot of food. Starr has a multitude of food allergies that limit his diet. He worried about having his food choices out of his control while training with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. As a result, he packed an entire suitcase full of beans.
Ringo Starr brought a full suitcase full of this food when The Beatles went to India
The Beatles attended a seminar on transcendental meditation in 1967. They decided to further their education in 1968 with a trip to visit the Maharishi in India. George Harrison had the greatest interest in meditation, but his bandmates all joined him. Harrison took note of Starr’s packing choices.
“John came, and Paul came after him, and then Richard [Ringo] followed with fifteen Sherpas carrying Heinz baked beans,” Harrison said in The Beatles Anthology. “There was also the world...

Elvis Presley‘s Graceland visitors regularly leave tokens at the King of Rock and Roll’s gravesite. Many items, from teddy bears to flowers, have been placed upon Presley’s grave. However, when Paul McCartney visited the rock and roll icon’s home, he left a touching tribute behind. Here are all the details.
What was the tribute Paul McCartney placed at Elvis Presley’s grave?
Paul McCartney visited Elvis Presley’s Graceland home in 2013. He toured the premises, seeing how the King of Rock and Roll lived during the almost 20 years he occupied the Memphis estate.
All Graceland tours end at the Meditation Garden. This is where Presley, his father Vernon, his mother Gladys, and grandmother Minnie May are buried. In 2020, Presley’s grandson Benjamin Keough was interred opposite his grave, followed by his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, in 2023.

Paul McCartney is known for bringing a bit of inspired silliness to his songwriting — after all, one of his most famous his is called “Silly Love Songs!” Paul said he added a joke to The Beatles’ “When I’m Sixty-Four” to make it “funnier.” He said “When I’m Sixty-Four” was inspired by old-school songs he and John Lennon appreciated so much. On the other hand, John said he never could have written “When I’m Sixty-Four.”
Paul McCartney added a line about starving to The Beatles’ ‘When I’m Sixty-Four’ as a joke
During a 2012 interview with The Independent, Paul discussed the concept behind “When I’m Sixty-Four.” “It was about myself, looking to the future,” he recalled. “Retirement age of 65 felt too obvious, so I made it a year earlier.”
One of the tune’s most famous lines could have been very different. “‘Will you still need me, will you still feed me...

When John Lennon released the album Two Virgins in 1968, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr were politely shocked. While they tried not to get caught up in the public outcry over the album cover — which featured full frontal nudity from Lennon and Yoko Ono — they didn’t approve of it. Lennon said it surprised him that McCartney and Harrison were so prudish.
John Lennon said Paul McCartney and George Harrison were surprisingly prudish
Lennon and Ono chose to pose naked on the cover of Two Virgins because they wanted to reveal all of themselves to the public. It was a bold choice that brought the couple a great deal of blowback.
“It was insane!” Lennon said in The Beatles Anthology. “People got so upset about it — the fact that two people were naked. I didn’t think there’d be such a fuss. I guess the world thinks we’re an ugly couple.

Ron Reiner is back with a Spinal Tap sequel, but a reliance on cameos may pose a risk to its humor. The sequel's focus on celebrity appearances may shift attention away from original jokes and characters. Despite concerns, fans can still look forward to the antics of the returning Spinal Tap team and star-studded cameos.
The latest announcement about Spinal Tap II, Rob Reiner’s long-awaited sequel to his mock-rockumentary classic This is Spinal Tap, is a worrying sign – but it still sounds like a lot of fun. Reiner has reassembled Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean as David St. Hubbins, and Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls for a new Spinal Tap movie just in time for the 40th anniversary of the comedy classic. In addition to the returning lead trio, Reiner is reprising his own role as Marty Di Bergi, the director of the original mockumentary, for the highly anticipated legacy sequel.

Vladimir Putin’s Run-In With Greenpeace & Paul McCartney To Be Spotlighted In BBC Documentary Series
Exclusive: Vladimir Putin’s 10-year-old battle with a group of Greenpeace protestors that attracted the attention of none other than Paul McCartney is to be spotlighted in a BBC documentary series.
Curve Media’s On Thin Ice: Putin V Greenpeace (working title) is being positioned as the BBC’s latest box-set series and will break with tradition by airing via bitesized half-hour episodes.
The series will follow what happened when a group of climate activists on a daring mission to disrupt Russia’s Arctic oil production unwittingly sailed into a pivotal moment in Putin’s relationship with the West in 2013.
Known as the Arctic 30, the group had wanted to film a protest and discourage an international Arctic oil rush, but they were arrested and incarcerated in a brutal Russian prison. Russian security services had been monitoring their activities and word came from the very top: the protestors would be made...

While John Lennon was still in The Beatles, he put out an album with a cover that shocked people around the world. His bandmates even had to field calls from reporters about it. On the cover of Two Virgins, one of three experimental albums Lennon released with Yoko Ono, the couple posed naked. When his aunt saw the image, she complained that Lennon looked ugly. This, he said, was his intention.

In 1968, Lennon and Ono released Two Virgins. The cover featured full frontal nudity, prompting many record stores to put the album in a paper bag in order to sell it. Lennon shared the intention behind the photograph.

In a NYC playback session for Eternal Sunshine, the pop queen revealed that...

The Beatles‘ “Love Me Do” is one of those bubblegum pop songs like The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer” or The Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar” that is perfect in its simplicity. Paul McCartney said he and John Lennon had no idea what they were doing when they wrote the song. John said the tune was markedly different from later Beatles tunes like “Penny Lane.”

Of all The Beatles, Ringo Starr wrote the fewest songs for the band. He was more interested in supporting his bandmates’ writing with his drumming. Still, Starr played an important role in the inception of a couple of classic Beatles songs. His “Ringoisms” inspired the titles of two songs.
Ringo Starr accidentally named 2 Beatles songs
Practically as soon as Starr joined The Beatles, his bandmates grew accustomed to his unique way of speaking. He often coined phrases that they’d never heard before.
“Ringo would always say grammatically incorrect phrases and we’d all laugh,” George Harrison said in The Beatles Anthology. “I remember when we were driving back to Liverpool from Luton up the M1 motorway in Ringo’s Zephyr, and the car’s bonnet hadn’t been latched properly. The wind got under it and blew it up in front of the windscreen. We were all shouting, ‘Aaaargh!

It’s time to crank the amps up to 11. Or, is it 12?
“This is Spın̈al Tap” (with a dotless i and umlauts on the n), Rob Reiner’s legendary spoof film starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and a slew of guests like Paul Shaffer (“kick my ass!”), Fran Drescher, Bruno Kirby (“if Frank Sinatra says it’s okay!”), and Billy Crystal (“mime is money!”) was way ahead of its time as both a mockumentary and in satirizing the rock lifestyle. The film is beloved by fans, and especially musicians, and it certainly seems like there’s been a sequel already. The gang has reunited for television specials, album releases (“Break Like the Wind”), made an appearance on “The Simpsons,” and, of course, the three actors have done several similar improv-style satires, including “A Mighty Wind,” which skewers folk musicians. But there actually hasn’t been a sequel...

Though technically The Comic Strip team of Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French and Peter Richardson got there first a year earlier with the excellent Bad News, which is well worth seeking out of you’ve never had the pleasure.
This Is Spinal Tap is often cited as one of the funniest films ever made, with musicians frequently applauding the accuracy of several scenes, from petty band squabbles to getting lost backstage and over the top props onstage.

When the first official word broke of a proper, big screen sequel to 1984 comedy classic This Is Spinal Tap, the plan according to director (and onscreen documentarian Marti Dibergi) Rob Reiner was to have the new film out in time for this year's 40th anniversary of the original's release. Alas, in true Tap fashion, it has not come to pass, the actors' strike partly responsible for the film lingering in limbo like the band wandering the labyrinthine corridors of a Cleveland concert venue. But crank your excitement levels to 11, as Castle Rock and Reiner have announced that the sequel is now shooting.
Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer are all back, having worked out a concept for the follow-up with Reiner that will see heavy metal legends Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls reunite for one last, contractually-obligated tour.
