Today, Apple TV+ revealed the trailer for “The Big Cigar,” the upcoming limited series led by André Holland, who stars alongside Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, P. J. Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie and Glynn Turman. “The Big Cigar” makes its global debut on May 17 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday through June 14.
Based on the magazine article of the same name by Joshuah Bearman (“Argo”), who also serves as executive producer, “The Big Cigar” tells the incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution. It’s a wild caper about Black Panther founder Huey P. Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the assistance of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan — involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong every way it possibly can.
NAACP Image Award winner Janine Sherman Barrois is the showrunner of “The Big Cigar.

Apple TV+ has just unveiled the trailer for “The Big Cigar,” the six-part limited series about Black Panther party founder Huey P. Newton (André Holland). The show tells the remarkable true story of how Newton, a film producer, and a whole crew of people involved in a fake movie production helped the political activist while he tried to evade the FBI in 1974.
The trailer introduces Holland as Newton and his revolutionary accomplishments, along Alessandro Nivola as producer Bert Schneider. The cast includes Tiffany Boone, Pj Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie, and Glynn Turman (guest stars include Taylor Jackson as Candice Bergen and Inny Clemons as Richard Pryor). With upbeat ’70s music and the peppy fonts to go with it, the vibe is more upbeat than one would expect of a drama thriller — but as the premise underscores, there’s always more story to tell.

André Holland takes on the role of revolutionary Huey P. Newton in the trailer for Apple TV+’s The Big Cigar.
Far from a straight biopic about the founder of the Black Panther Party, the six-episode limited series based on Joshuah Bearman’s magazine article of the same name delivers the high-impact energy of a heist as it tells the story of how Newton escaped the FBI and fled to Cuba with the help of famed Hollywood producer Bert Schneider (played by Alessandro Nivola) in perhaps the most ambitiously staged and fake movie production of all time.
“You’re the hot-shot producer, man, produce this,” Newton tells Schneider as they begin to cook up an elaborate plan to help the political activist evade a murder charge, as police attempt to pin him for the death of a 17-year-old sex trafficking victim in 1974.

James Gandolfini’s The Sopranos is often regarded as among the best TV shows ever made. The show chronicling the life and criminal career of Tony Soprano enthralled fans with its first few seasons. For six seasons, they were stuck to their TV every week waiting for new episodes to air. Gandolfini’s influential career-defining performance as Tony Soprano won him multiple Emmys.
A still from HBO’s The Sopranos
Despite the high reputation of the series, the series finale that featured the infamous cut-to-black sequence at the end divided fans. Additionally, Edie Falco who played Carmela Soprano teased that she and Gandolfini shot a Soprano-themed ad to help lure LeBron James to join the New York Knicks. The long-rumored footage has now made its way online and it is interesting, to say the least.

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose will return to host the 77th Annual Tony Awards, marking her third consecutive year as host. Last year’s Tonys took place during the WGA strike and were carried out without a script. DeBose was more than up to that challenge, so handling the 2024 show should be much less stressful.
In addition to hosting, DeBose will choreograph the awards show’s opening number and serve as producer.
“I couldn’t pass up the chance to host the Tonys one more time at Lincoln Center. I’m excited to collaborate with the team to create an incredible celebration of this season’s achievements on Broadway for our community and for everyone at home,” said DeBose.
The 2024 Tony Awards nominees will be revealed on Tuesday, April 30.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson revealed there was one thing that would have kept him from signing onto Kraven the Hunter.
In a cover story for Rolling Stone U.K., the Bullet Train actor opened up about his role in the upcoming Sony/Marvel project, which sees him take on the role of the Spider-Man villain.
“I think there was something unique about this character and something grounded,” he told the publication. “We’ve all had enough of seeing certain studio films, a certain kind of pop culture… where they’re churning out stuff that dilutes wanting to go to the cinema. I wouldn’t have signed onto it if I felt there wasn’t something to really bring to life with this character.”
He explained that working on a Sony/Marvel film is a challenge in and of itself because there are so many things to take into consideration for the part.

It's a new year, so it's time for a new Blu-ray round-up! Our first of 2024! Things are a little sparse here in at the start of the year, but there's still some great stuff to check out. We have Eli Roth's holiday slasher "Thanksgiving" to carve things up. Also, the fine folks at Kino Lorber have released John Woo's bonkers action extravaganza "Face/Off" on 4K! "Face/Off" is technically a December release, but we're including it now. Speaking of action, we also have a 4K release of Gareth Evans' "The Raid," aka "The Raid: Redemption." Finally, on the non-action movie front, we have the Criterion release of John Sayles' Western neo-noir character drama "Lone Star."
So let's get to it. And remember to keep spinning those discs.

In a year of reduced Marvel output, there are still a lot of interesting comic book adaptations emerging in 2024 from both Sony and Marvel Studios. As it stands, Deadpool 3 is the only MCU film releasing in theaters this year, but the Sony side of Marvel has three movies heading to multiplexes, including Kraven the Hunter, which was previously set to make its debut in 2023.
MCU series Echo has already hit Disney+ in January, but here’s what you can expect to arrive in the rest of 2024.
Madame Web – February 14
The webs will be madaming extremely hard in 2024 as Sony returns to the Spider-Man-adjacent well to pluck out the first of two new gems. Will they be sparkly, box office-friendly Venom diamonds? Or will they be cubic zirconia Morbiuses? Only time will tell, but the first trailer for February’s Madame Web was leaning heavily towards Morbius, inspiring reams of...

Sometimes when you finish reading a good novel or collection of short stories, you look forward to picking it up again it in a year or two or 20, to reenter its world and discover new wisdom in its powers of observation, new flashes of light in its turns of phrase. Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat casts a similar spell, so rich is it in detail and nuance and creative juice. Drawing upon the distinctive voice of Flannery O’Connor, it’s a sublime portrait of a great writer, a movie I can’t wait to see again for its visual elegance, its electric leaps between an author’s life and her work, and the delicious, playful intensity of all the performances, with Maya Hawke and Laura Linney each taking on a half-dozen interconnected roles.

Ethan Hawke has directed, written and/or acted in quite a few notably esoteric projects throughout his multi-faceted career, and he’s now come up with another in Wildcat. This one makes use of four Flannery O’Connor stories that tie in to aspects of the writer’s difficult life and truly do illuminate aspects of it in clever and plausible ways. The general public would have no clue as to what’s going on in this often perceptively made film that connects with her work, but the episodes are frequently weird, abruptly amusing and almost always cleverly pertinent in some way.
There’s no question but that Wildcat is a small, narrowly focused work that will be of interest mainly to college literature students, southern academics and particular female writers. But kudos to Hawke for putting even a small spotlight on this singular American writer who, while working through dreadful medical ailments,...

Awards season has officially arrived (though it's felt like a never-ending cycle for quite some time now), and one of the most closely watched thoroughbreds is Bradley Cooper's Leonard Bernstein drama, "Maestro."
A major motion picture recounting the life and times of Bernstein has been in the works for years. Martin Scorsese was attached to direct the project for Paramount, but dropped out when the financing came together for his long-in-gestation gangland epic "The Irishman." The film eventually found its way to Cooper, who skillfully maneuvered his way into the director's chair before his directorial debut, "A Star Is Born," became a 2018 awards season sensation.
Why all the fuss about a Bernstein-centric movie? The man was a powerhouse American composer and conductor who openly embraced his Jewish identity, while privately struggling with his sexual orientation. He was a cultural giant, one whose stature has faded along with the declining interest in classical music.

Since Sony and Disney made a deal about Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in which Tom Holland debuted as the web-slinger in 2016, Sony decided to put more effort into building their own cinematic universe, officially called Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, in which Spider-Man still hasn’t appeared, but some other characters associated with him have.
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (without Spider-Man in it) kicked off with ‘Venom’ in 2018, and since then, it spawned two more movies; ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ and ‘Morbius.’ Neither of these movies was critically acclaimed, but both ‘Venom’ movies were commercially successful, which can’t be said for ‘Morbius.’
Still, even though we are now used to getting half-hits and misses from Sony, we can still expect a lot of content in the future, particularly next year when we’re set to get three new movies set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, including ‘Kraven the Hunter,...

Before Margot Robbie was Barbie, she was Harley Quinn, Naomi Lapaglia, Tonya Harding, and many more characters. There's no doubt Robbie loves her job as an actor, and while tackling the role of an iconic children's toy wasn't initially on her career bucket list, it's clear she's happy she took a chance with the role.
A month before the highly anticipated July 2023 release of "Barbie," Robbie spoke to Vogue about how playing the role never even crossed her mind. "It wasn't that I ever wanted to play Barbie, or dreamt of being Barbie, or anything like that," she explained. "This is going to sound stupid, but I really didn't even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project."
And while "Barbie" might arguably be Robbie's most hyped-up movie in her career so far, it's by no means the only role she's slayed. Take a look back at Robbie's best movies below.

The Filming Italy Sardegna Festival that kicks off Italy’s summer moviegoing season will play a prominent role in the ongoing push to lure Italians back into movie theaters, just as the country’s box office is starting to gain traction.
A robust roster of talents from Hollywood and Italy and a solid lineup of premieres are booked for this event, which combines film and TV and unspools June 22-25 in the Forte Village resort near Cagliari, capital of Sardegna (Sardinia in English). The fest is set to take place just as the Italian government starts to invest €20 million ($22 million) to promote moviegoing through a campaign called Cinema Revolution, under which cinema tickets will be half-price for a limited time.
“While in past years I struggled to find films, this time around I have 50 titles,” notes Tiziana Rocca, the marketing guru and former Taormina Film Festival chief who launched the Sardinia event six years ago.

“I stared death in the face, and for the first time, I saw my true self,” Taylor-Johnson’s Spider-Man villain can be heard saying in the trailer for the upcoming Sony film.
As Sergei grows up, he begins his personal hunt for the bad guys, viciously going after each one. At one point he says, “My...

It's been a longer than planned journey to screens for Kraven The Hunter, which sees Aaron Taylor-Johnson playing a version of the classic Spider-Man villain, but it'll finally land in October. As has previously hinted, this will be an origin story, with the character turned into more of an antihero. Check out the first trailer…
In this take on the character's story — directed by Jc Chandor from a script by Richard Wenk, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, Taylor-Johnson plays Sergei Kravinoff, a man with some serious daddy issues. Pushed by his father to be a strong hunter, he ends up instead attacked by a lion and left for dead. But something happens with mixing bloods and he becomes a powerful warrior — who swears to take down the evil his father pours into the world.

Filmmaker J.C. Chandor – an Oscar nominee for writing “Margin Call,” the man who directed one of Robert Redford’s final lead performances in “All Is Lost,” and a New York Mets fan – is back with his first studio blockbuster: “Kraven the Hunter,” the latest entry in Sony’s expanded Spider-Man universe.
The studio has had some success with its Spider-Man adjacent films, turning “Venom” into a blockbuster franchise with Tom Hardy and even scoring modest ticket sales with “Morbius” with Jared Leto despite toxic reviews. “Kraven the Hunter” seems to follow the template, turning a classic Spider-Man villain into an anti-hero, of sorts, who isn’t necessarily all-bad. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the title character, a violent killer whose DNA was altered after being attacked by a lion (sure). Oscar winner Russell Crowe plays Kraven the Hunter’s evil father with Oscar winner Ariana DeBose set as the female lead,...

After the meme-able disaster of Morbius, Sony is back to try again with another unestablished Spider-Man villain solo movie. This time, they’re taking a decidedly R-rated approach, as seen in the first trailer for Kraven the Hunter.
The film stars a jacked Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven, the son of a megalomaniacal crime lord and hunter (Russell Crowe). On a safari to hunt lions, Sergei’s dad leaves him for dead after showing weakness in front of the great cat. In a bit of comic-inaccurate-but-hey-we-gotta-get-him-powers-somehow sci-fi, it seems Sergei’s blood gets mixed with that of a lion, granting him apex predator abilities and apparently a direct line of communication to animals.
He grows up and decides to use his vicious powers to counteract his father’s criminal enterprises; “My father puts evil into the world; I take it out,” he tells Ariana DeBose’s character, reportedly the voodoo priestess Calypso.
