All performers use some part of their own reality to shape the characters they inhabit, but for “The Brutalist,” Adrien Brody had more than most to work off of. The film follows fictional Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor László Tóth as he immigrates to America with the hopes of re-starting his life and practicing his craft. Having grown up amongst immigrant parents and grandparents from Hungary and Poland, Brody was all-too familiar with not only the broad difficulties this experience entails, but the specific hardships, both physical and emotional, faced along the way.
For the most recent episode of “The A24 Podcast,” Brody sat down with his “The Darjeeling Limited” costar Jason Schwartzman and detailed these challenges, sharing how his maternal grandfather helped shaped elements of his character in “The Brutalist.”

Lucy Gray Baird, the protagonist in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is named after a poem from 1799. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was the first Hunger Games spinoff written by author Suzanne Collins. The novel was published in 2020, and the film adaption was released in 2023. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is one of the best Hunger Games movies, and successfully showcased a much less developed version of Panem, decades before the original films. The film proved that Hunger Games movies not featuring Katniss can still find success.
After watching Katniss rebel against the Capitol in four Hunger Games films, the spinoff film follows a new protagonist, Lucy Gray. In the film, Lucy Gray is portrayed by Rachel Zegler. In addition to Zegler, the cast of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes includes Tom Blyth, Jason Schwartzman, Viola Davis, Peter Dinklage, and Hunter Schafer. The...

Daniel Craig's new A24 movie is now available to watch at home following his Golden Globe nomination. The English actor is widely known to audiences for his portrayal of the impossibly suave secret agent in five James Bond movies – Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time to Die. Since his final portrayal in 2021, the 007 franchise has been conducting an exhaustive search for a new James Bond actor, allowing Craig to branch out and experiment with other roles.
Other than Bond, Craig is best known for his portrayal of the Southern sleuth, Benoit Blanc, in Rian Johnson's Knives Out movies, including the original 2019 film, its 2022 sequel Glass Onion, with a third, Wake Up Dead Man, on the way in 2025. For the first two films, Craig received Golden Globe nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. In 2024, Craig starred in an A24 movie,...

Luca Guadagnino released two films in 2024, and coming off the energetic “Challengers” was the more introspective “Queer.” The filmmaker’s latest stars Daniel Craig as William Lee, a fictionalized stand-in for author William S. Burroughs, whose slender novel the movie is based on.
The movie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and later played the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. A24 acquired the domestic distribution rights to the movie, with Mubi releasing the movie internationally.
But how can you watch Guadagnino’s latest? Read on to find out.
Is “Queer” streaming?
After being released in theaters last November and December, “Queer” is now finally available to rent on Digital. The film will eventually be streaming on Max due to an output deal between the streamer and A24, but a streaming release date has not yet been revealed. “Queer” will also be released on Blu-ray in April.

Kathryn Bernardo is a very good girl gone bad in Petersen Vargas‘ easy-to-digest revenge thriller shown on Netflix. The Filipino actress who has been dominating the country’s TV- and cinema screens since her childhood delivers her standardly good performance in a role that carries the film. Her very presence already guarantees a large viewership, and so does Dolly De Leon‘s which is something Vargas had most probably calculated on from the beginning. Both women are audience magnets and although their full potential isn’t even required for the two roles, they do shine. It is the clash of these two screen titans that brings back the spirit of the 1980s and briefly resurrects the memories of epic wars between Alexis (Joan Collins) & Cristal (Linda Evans) in “Dynasty”. But for that candle to burn longer, we would need more finely developed dramatic moments and less dramatic tears.

Carol Kane received her first awards nomination 50 years ago next year. It was a big one, too; after just five years in film, working with directors of the caliber of Mike Nichols and Hal Ashby, Kane was feted by the Academy for her starring role in Joan Micklin Silver’s period drama Hester Street, a film she made in 1975 alongside Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon. Primetime Emmy awards followed in the early ’80s, for James L. Brooks’ hit show Taxi, in which she played the wife of Andy Kaufman’s character Latka Gravas.
Awards-wise, Kane has simmered throughout her career while never quite boiling over. Instead, she focused on the work—as a young actress, she caught the tail end of the New Hollywood of the ’60s, and then quite effortlessly segued into the commercial studio mainstream of the ’80s, making Scrooged in 1988 with Bill Murray. Jamie Lee Curtis may have earned herself another Academy Award nomination thanks to her impressive performance in The Last Showgirl, but it might not be enough to win her the award. The Last Showgirl is very much Pamela Anderson's film, with the plot focusing on her aging Vegas dancer Shelly as she struggles with her age and dwindling job prospects amid the closure of the show she's worked at for decades. However, the film boasts an impressive supporting cast, with stars like Brenda Song, Dave Bautista, Kiernan Shipka, Billie Lourd, and Jason Schwartzman all delivering strong performances alongside Anderson.
However, the most impressive of these performances by The Last Showgirl's ending might be Jamie Lee Curtis, who takes a potentially one-note character with Annette and transforms her into a heartbreaking and charming contrast to Shelly. It's a great performance from the seasoned actress, and it has been gaining award recognition.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
When reflecting on any year in movies, the theatrical experience rings most memorable. From driving across the border to Ohio with friends to watch No Country for Old Men in 2007, to a 35mm screening of Stalker at the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2011, with so rapt an audience I was terrified to swallow for fear it would disrupt their experience—each year holds it own special memories and 2024 was no different. There was a lively afternoon matinee of Between the Temples in which I was the youngest present by about 25 years, and a sold-out Wednesday screening of Showgirls at the Academy Museum with Elizabeth Berkley in person. But judging from reactions on X.com, I’m not alone in my favorite 2024 theatrical screening being witnessing Interstellar in 70mm IMAX.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes co-stars Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth reunited at Zegler’s Broadway production of Romeo + Juliet. Set during the 10th Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes follows a young Coriolanus Snow (Blyth) as he mentors Lucy Gray (Zegler), a traveling musician-turned-District 12 tribute. With a star-studded cast that included Viola Davis, Peter Dinklage, and Jason Schwartzman, director Francis Lawrence's prequel revealed a younger, more vulnerable side to the man who would later become Panem’s ruthless president.
Blyth shared photos of the reunion on his Instagram story, showcasing the pair’s genuine camaraderie a little over a year after their film’s release. The photos offer a nostalgic glimpse of the two stars' bond, which helped to reinvigorate interest in Suzanne Collins' dystopian world. Check out the photos below:

This weekend’s new film release builds on an interesting trend from 2024. Though it’s not something embraced by major studios, like the deep dive into movie riffs on popular toys and video games, it’s proving to be an awards showcase for the “indie upstarts”. I’m writing of the new venues for the often neglected (by studio execs) bombshell superstar actresses from a few decades ago. Often they’re banished to straight-to-video (now streaming) sex or horror “potboilers”, or sent to be supporting players on series TV. Just a few months ago, cinephiles were stunned by the outrageous satire of The Substance and embraced the courageous, and meta (spoofing lots of old tabloid “fodder”) performance of its lead, Demi Moore (who is now a big Oscar “front-runner” after her Golden Globe win and touching acceptance speech). Historians can point to the brief spate of mature actress thrillers from...

It sounds like you should expect an emotional climax to Sony's Spider-Verse movies when Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse finally releases. That's according to star Bryan Tyree Henry, who plays Miles Morales' father Jeff in the animated Marvel movies.

A year where the most celebrated films are as diverse as “Wicked,” “The Brutalist” and “Smile 2” is a year movie-lovers are going to remember for a long time. The industry’s and the audience’s acceptance of wildly disparate films allowed for a host of memorable, unique performances in 2024 that challenged the norms of motion picture performance and gave many actors their most iconic roles to date.
It’s hard to narrow down all the greats; by the time this retrospective was already getting out of hand, it became clear that some wonderful turns were somehow, despite their brilliance, not going to make the cut. But these are the performances that stood out amongst the standouts, in some of the best — and arguably one or two of the worst — movies of the 2024.

2025 is shaping up to be a good year for cinema, with several big-name directors releasing exciting, original movies. As next year's movie calendar starts to take shape, many fans are looking forward to 2025's big franchise blockbusters, like Superman and Avatar: Fire and Ash. However, there are also a lot of original concepts which have just as much potential for certain fans, thanks to the high-profile directors attached.
Directors such as Wes Anderson, Spike Lee and Ryan Coogler are all returning in 2025 after a quiet 2024. Next year also has Bong Joon-ho's hotly-anticipated follow-up to Parasite, and Paul Thomas Anderson is finally collaborating with Leonardo DiCaprio. There is something foundational about Carol Kane. She was part of the fabric of late 20th Century arts and entertainment, whether it be in films like “Dog Day Afternoon” and “The Princess Bride” or on television in her Emmy-winning performance on “Taxi” as wife to Andy Kaufman’s Latke. In transitioning into the 21st century, not only did her strengths become more amplified — her trademark quirkiness adding dynamism to movies such as “The Pacifier” and shows like “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” — but her range continues to become more pronounced. In the last decade alone she’s taken part in a western from Jacques Audiard (“The Sisters Brothers”), a zombie comedy from Jim Jarmusch (“The Dead Don’t Die”), and will soon be seen in Darren Aronofsky’s ’90s-set crime thriller “Caught Stealing” as a character she recently told IndieWire “only spoke Yiddish.”

Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis may have come and gone at the box office, but the big-budget epic is still a fresh topic of conversation.
During an episode of her Good For You podcast, a clip of which was shared on TikTok, the veteran stand-up comedian claimed she had a “horror audition” for Coppola’s latest film.
“This was such a core trauma for me,” explained the multi-hyphenate who has long worked as an actress, writer, director and producer. She went on to say that she got a call that Coppola wanted her to audition for the film — which she actually doesn’t name in the clip, though it’s clear she’s talking about his long-gestating epic that grossed $13 million at the global box office on a budget estimated to be roughly $120 million. Cummings says she threw herself into the audition, preparing “for days” and spending north of three hours in hair and makeup.

Often, the first taste of an upcoming film or television show is by way of its poster. For some films, such as “Jaws” or “The Silence of the Lambs,” a poster can in fact become entwined with its legacy and pave the way for an entire brand to be built. Making a strong first impression with an audience can be tantamount to a project’s success, but how does one capture the essence of an entire story in just one image?
For some, like Nathan Silver’s religious dramedy “Between the Temples,” the key is all in the title. ”Queer” is in theaters since December 13h. Featuring Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Colin Bates and Andra Ursula.

Warning: major spoilers for Luca Guadagnino’s Queer.
The romantic drama Queer tells the story of American expat Lee (Daniel Craig) and young man Gene (Drew Starkey), while also exploring the complexities of love, attraction, and gay lifestyle in the 1950s. Directed by Luca Guadagnino and based on the 1985 novella of the same name by William S. Burroughs, Queer takes the audience to 1950s México City to meet Lee, an outcast among other queer people, who spends his time visiting the city’s clubs and trying to find new (and younger) sex partners.
One day, Lee sees Gene at a bar and is instantly attracted to him, but to his surprise, he finds himself unable to get close to him until Gene finally approaches him. Lee and Gene begin a sexual relationship, but Gene continues to be emotionally distant, while Lee craves emotional intimacy, while also dealing with substance-use disorder.

Ben Kweller has a seventh album and a North American tour in the works, a year following the death of his 16-year-son. His latest album, Cover the Mirrors, a 12-track record, will arrive May 30, the singer-songwriter announced Friday.
The album’s release date marks what would have been his late son Dorian Zev Kweller’s 19th birthday. The Austin-based musician called it the “most personal, emotionally raw project” he’s worked on.
“When Dorian died in 2023 I was overcome with the need to make music,” Kweller said in a statement.

Plot: When the glittering Las Vegas revue she has headlined for decades announces it will soon close, a glamorous showgirl must reconcile with the decisions she’s made and the community she has built as she plans her next act.
Review: A lot of press has surrounded Pamela Anderson’s role in The Last Showgirl. After returning to acting in 2022 with a stint in a Broadway production of Chicago, Anderson released her memoir Love, Pamela and a corresponding Netflix documentary in 2023. With Lily James portraying Anderson in the Hulu limited series Pam & Tommy, Anderson has again entered the pop culture limelight, with many hailing The Last Showgirl as the actress’s revelatory rebirth as a dramatic actress. Directed by Gia Coppola, The Last Showgirl is an intriguing and devastating look at a fading aspect of Las Vegas and a stark portrait of a woman reflecting on the missed opportunities in her life.

When Pamela Anderson was announced as the star of Gia Coppola’s third film, “The Last Showgirl,” the stage was set for a massive career resurgence for the one-time “Baywatch” star. That the film — which sees Anderson taking on a full-bodied, deeply emotional role as a fading Las Vegas dancer — would alter the trajectory of Anderson’s life and career was never really in doubt, but the fruits of Coppola’s latest have been profound for the star.
And, as it turns out, the same is true for Coppola. As she tells IndieWire, the extremely edifying experience of making and releasing the film has also changed the way she thinks about her own life and work. Now, she said, she trusts herself. Challenges aren’t as scary. The world looks different.

For our most comprehensive year-end feature, we’re providing a cumulative look at The Film Stage’s favorite films of 2024. We’ve asked contributors to compile ten-best lists with five honorable mentions––many of those personal selections will be shared in coming weeks in separate features––and from tallied votes has this top 50 been assembled.
Without further ado, check out out the best in 2024 cinema below, our ongoing year-end coverage here, and return in the coming weeks as we look towards 2025.
50. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (George Miller)
While Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earned less than its predecessor at the box office, it was no less creatively satisfying. There should be little hesitation in calling Fury Road one of the greatest action films of all time (if not the greatest); all the more impressive that George Miller had it in him to make Furiosa even more epic.

“I have to say I’m stunned. I haven’t been able to make it real in my mind yet,” reflects Carol Kane on her recent awards nominations and wins for the film “Between the Temples.” The veteran star received the Supporting Actress prize from the New York Film Critics Circle and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Supporting Performance for her turn in the Nathan Silver movie, on which she also serves as executive producer. The recognition comes as a welcome surprise because, as she says, “It’s a unique experience at my age to get re-noticed, as it were.” Though she would prefer that she and her co-star Jason Schwartzman “were nominated for things together,” she remains “extremely grateful” and thinks the citations are “like a miracle.” Watch our complete video interview above.

The 2024 edition of the Kennedy Center Honors celebrated an eclectic assortment of entertainers Sunday night: filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, singer Bonnie Raitt, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and surviving members of the Grateful Dead. The organization also bestowed its honor on an entertainment venue for the first time, New York’s iconic Apollo Theater.
As per tradition, the honorees observed the proceedings from the presidential box in the Kennedy Center Opera House, accompanied by President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and First Husband Doug Emhoff. Freshly arrived from a White House reception, all received rousing ovations from an appreciative audience when introduced.
That White House tradition could go on hiatus during the incoming Trump administration, since Donald Trump notably declined to participate in the affair during his first presidency. Nonetheless, invitations will be extended by the rigidly nonpartisan arts institution, the Kencen assures.
Slated to air on CBS Dec.

After close to three hours of deliberation, the New York Film Critics Circle named Brady Corbet’s three-hour-plus epic The Brutalist as Best Film. The group also named the pic’s star Adrien Brody as Best Actor.
A24 snapped up the movie after its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it earned a 13-minute ovation. The Brutalist stars Brody as László Tóth, a World War II Hungarian refugee architect in the U.S. and Guy Pearce as the complex real estate tycoon who enlists Tóth’s talents of Brody’s character. Corbet, who won the Silver Lion for Best Director at Venice, shot The Brutalist in Hungary with tax credits for under $10M. It opens on December 20. Wicked's box office has been consistently strong throughout its run. Not only has the film adaptation of Wicked received great reviews, but it managed to debut at no. 1 in its first weekend at the box office, bringing in $112.5 million. To date, Wicked has made over $359 million worldwide at the box office, continuing on strong in its second weekend. The film is playing on nearly 4,000 screens across the country, and thus will continue to rake in cash over the next few weeks.
Something especially impressive about Wicked's box office run is the fact that it has been able to maintain its strong performance despite competition. A phenomenon "Glicked" in an attempted Barbenheimer repeat, Wicked had to compete directly with Ridley Scott's Gladiator II during its November 22 opening weekend. It's hard to believe it's been 25 years since Freaks and Geeks aired on NBC. The show featured a fantastic cast, touching, realistic writing, terrific music, and an almost unforgivable short run.
Many of the young cast members went on to have excellent careers despite NBC's pitiful treatment of the show. Stars like James Franco, Linda Cardellini, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Phillips, John Francis Daly, and Martin Star have all enjoyed robust careers in Hollywood. Shia Labeouf, Rashida Jones, Lizzy Caplan, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Ben Foster, Amy Aquino, Samaire Armstrong, Stephanie Erb, Leslie Mann, Kevin Corrigan, David Krumholtz, Jason Schwartzman, Matt Czuchy, and Mike White are just some of the talent that appeared in the shows all too brief run.

Catching up to three big name festival films that opened Wednesday at the specialty box office to start the extended U.S. Thanksgiving holiday weekend – Luca Guadagnino’s Queer from A24 starring 007 Daniel Craig; Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s Maria from Netflix, both of which premiered at Venice; and Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, which won a clutch of awards Cannes including a Special Jury Award.

Luca Guadagnino has been trying to make his latest movie for all of his adult life. The lauded director and producer of offbeat romantic films like Call Me by Your Name and Challengers sticks to this genre with Queer, an adaptation of legendary beat writer William S. Burroughs’ novella, which delves into loneliness and longing, and a wild ayahuasca journey, while following the writer as he pursues a cagey young American in 1950s Mexico City.
Guadagnino first came upon a copy of Queer when he was browsing a bookstore as a teenager in Palermo, Italy, and he was instantly intrigued, as he explained during a Q&a — with stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey and writer Justin Kuritzkes — after the movie’s New York Film Festival premiere.
“In the store, immediately, I was exposed to the unequal language of this amazing writer that I didn’t know,” he said of Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical book.

Luca Guadagnino's latest movie, Queer, has been earning high acclaim since premiering at the Venice Film Festival especially for Daniel Craig's raw and vulnerable performance. Based on William S. Burroughs' unfinished novel of the same name, Queer features many tropes emblematic of the iconic Beat Generation and specific details from the author's life. The end result is a surreal journey through Mexico and South America in the 1950s, and Guadagnino's vision is aided by a smart script penned by Justin Kuritzkes (who also worked with him on Challengers).
Queer centers on Craig's William Lee, often seen as an avatar for the author himself, who lives in an American expat community in Mexico City. He spends his time stumbling from one physical connection to the next, but things change when he meets Eugene Allerton. Their tentative romance is the heart of the story,...

I haven't read the William S. Burroughs novel that Queer is adapted from, but if you told me Luca Guadagnino had gutted it and started from scratch, I'd believe you. His latest movie seems to me to be in clear conversation with his previous work, as if the sensibilities of his four previous features were combined in one movie. It's an enigmatic experience that I desperately want to spend this space interpreting. But I will refrain from going into too much detail and just offer up the lens I saw it through.
An American expat in 1950s Mexico City, struggling with isolation and the remnants of his past, becomes infatuated with a younger man, sparking an intense and obsessive relationship.

His name is Lee … Bill Lee. A man slouching toward middle age and suffering the malaise of someone who’s seen it all, heard it all, shot it all into his veins, he’s embraced the dissolute life of an ex-pat. Sporting an endless supply of filthy linen suits and ever-present fedoras, Lee cruises the bars looking to score sex and junk in Mexico. Sweaty afternoons are spent buzzed on cheap tequila and bantering with his fellow social outcasts. Evenings are spent in the company of willing young men and needles.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally posted during the 2024 Venice Film Festival. A24 opens “Queer” in select theaters on November 27.
As an adaptation of “Junkie” author William S. Burroughs’ second novel, “Queer” is about chemical addictions, yes. But it’s even more about being so addicted to a person that, no matter how much you turn yourself inside out trying to get them to love you — charming them with your literary voice, lathering yourself into a stupor on drugs, or even going to the far reaches of a jungle — they will never love you the way you want them to, and even telepathy couldn’t help explain to you why.
Luca Guadagnino’s profound and kaleidoscopic new film begins in a post-World War II Mexico City of the mind and ends in the Ecuadorian rainforest on an ayahuasca trip that’s part Apichatpong Weerasethakul, part “2001: A Space Odyssey,...
