Sylvester Stallone is certainly one of the biggest names in the history of Hollywood, as he was truly the king when it came to action and drama in the 70s and 80s. After all, his roles in classics such as Rocky, Rambo, and more, solidified his legacy as an all-time great.

Ella is trained to help Alan with day-to-day tasks, in essence replacing his paralysed limbs. But when Ella starts feeding off Alan’s darker impulses and revenge-filled dreams, things start to become deadly for those around him.

It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.
For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.

1993’s Cliffhanger came along at an essential time for Sylvester Stallone. In 1990, Rocky V notably underperformed at the box office, while his foray into comedy with Oscar and Stop, Or My Mom Will Shoot was disastrous. Clearly, he needed the right comeback movie. Luckily, Sly was on the right track, with him signing a deal to make a high-concept action flick for Carolco Pictures, the reigning kings of 80s and 90s action movies called Cliffhanger. In it, he would play a mountain climber named Gabe Walker, who blames himself after a rescue gone wrong. While mounting another rescue attempt, Walker runs afoul of a group of deadly robbers who’ve stolen millions in unmarked currency via an air-to-air transfer.
Sporting an outstanding supporting cast that includes John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, Janine Turner and Leon, Cliffhanger was a huge hit and revitalized Sly’s career. It also elevated director Renny Harlin to the A-list,...

The stars of Northern Exposure — Rob Morrow, Janine Turner, Barry Corbin, Cynthia Geary and John Corbett — reunited to kick off this week’s Vulture Festival. During the panel Monday, the cast members reminisced about their time starring in the CBS series, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, though there was no mention of a revival series that was originally announced in 2018.
“Your chance of having a hit television is probably as good as your chance of going to space and circling Earth,” Corbin said about Northern Exposure’s success. “The casting fit, the location fit, the music fit. Everything fit.”
Corbin, who starred as astronaut and retired Marine fighter pilot Maurice J. Minnifield, agreed with his fellow cast mates that all the elements behind Northern Exposure made for a high-performing series that stood out from other shows at the time.

The coronavirus couldn't have come at a worse time for currently airing broadcast television hoping to end their full seasons.
Heck, it's not good for upcoming series or pilots under consideration, either.
While it's possible bubble shows might get a second life so their already carved path continues and viewers can snuggle in with what's already comfortable, if production stoppage goes on for a long time, seasons might not end at all and fall TV could get delayed until January 2021.
But amidst all of the chaos, there are silver linings.
We talk about the glut of great programming all the time and how impossible it is to watch what you want. What better time to check out alternatives than when all of your time is spent indoors?

Believe it or not, the Golden Globes having a host is a relatively new development. Since the Hollywood Foreign Press started their awards show in 1944—back then it was just about honoring film, TV came in 1957—the Golden Globes ceremony was host-less until the 1990s. In 1994, actors John Larroquette and Janine Turner became the first hosts at the 52nd annual ceremony. At the time Larroquette was starring in The John Larroquette Show, Turner was in Northern Exposure. The ceremony went back to having no host until 2010 when Ricky Gervais began his three-year stint. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler picked up the baton for 2013-2015, Gervais returned in 2016, Jimmy Fallon helmed in 2017, Seth Meyers in 2018, and Andy Samberg...

“I miss seeing Ricky host the Globes!” That’s how a whopping 89% of Gold Derby readers voted in our recent poll that asked whether four-time Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais should return to host the 2019 ceremony. It’s been three years since Gervais last graced the stage, as NBC’s late-night stars Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers hosted in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Rounding out the results of our poll, 6% of readers voted “Maybe — I’ll have to think about it more” while 5% of haters said “No — Ricky was way too mean.”

Monkey Shines finds George A. Romero in the somewhat unusual position of adapting someone else’s work. Brought onto the project after the dissolution of his partnership with producer Richard P. Rubinstein, Romero claims this was the only time he ever adapted someone else’s work besides Stephen King (though I’m unsure how The Crazies and Two Evil Eyes figure into his estimation). Perhaps it’s this circumstance that results in Monkey Shines being considered one of Romero’s lesser works. As the writer and director known for inventing the modern zombie and injecting strong sociopolitical messages into independent horror cinema, tackling what looks to be a scientific thriller à la Michael Crichton for his first major studio-backed film seems beneath his talents. Yet, I can’t imagine anyone else directing this film and achieving similarly successful results.

Before Seth Meyers set foot in the Beverly Hilton Hotel Sunday night, he was already in a hole. As a man hosting a Golden Globes ceremony that was rightfully being driven by women’s stories, the question on the tip of everyone’s tongue was why a woman wasn’t running point at HFPA’s 75th celebration.
And to be clear, there’s not a good reason one wasn’t. Aside from picking past hosts like Amy Poehler & Tina Fey, Janine Turner, or… well, that’s it (the Globes didn’t use a host regularly until 2010), there are a slew of incredible comediennes who would’ve absolutely killed it this year. We would’ve loved to see that show. Really, it would’ve been incredible — but the show we got wasn’t Meyers’ to claim. He delivered a damn fine and exceptionally funny performance under raw, delicate conditions, but this was Oprah’s Golden Globes,...

If you’ve been missing Sydney Bristow, better book a ticket to Austin, TX. The Atx Television Festival announced today it will be hosting an “Alias” writers’ room reunion featuring many of the show’s long-time scribes, including Ken Olin, Lawrence Trilling, Sarah Caplan, Monica Breen, Jeff Pinkner, Andre Nemec, and Josh Appelbaum.
Creator J.J. Abrams has yet to be confirmed, but additional panelists will be announced at a later date. Last year, the Atx Festival hosted a writers’ room reunion for “The O.C.” that included creator Josh Schwartz.
Also announced this afternoon was a “Parks and Recreation” community screening. For the first five seasons of the festival, the Austin-based event celebrated an Austin-based show: “Friday Night Lights.” But last year marked the final tailgate party / community screening for the beloved series, and festival programmers found a more than fitting replacement in “Parks and Recreation.”

Oh my, how the mighty had fallen! I had vague memories of Monkey Shines when I watched it over twenty years ago and, after revisiting this, it all makes sense why this film doesn’t spring to mind when I think of Romero’s great early body of work. George A. Romero’s first studio film ideally should have been the perfect opportunity for him to showcase his talent in a direction that nobody would expect and on paper it would seem that was his intention.
The story itself isn’t exactly straight horror. In fact, the first hour of the film plays off of a tragedy and is meant to create empathy for Jason Beghe’s character in a way that Christy Brown earns empathy in My Left Foot, but Beghe’s character isn’t developed enough to forgive or understand his selfish demeanor. There are certain images that stick with me from my childhood TV consumption: turtles eating pizza in a sewer; Kevin Sorbo in leather pants; and a moose serenely walking down the street. The latter image is the opening to one of my favorite TV shows of all time – Northern Exposure. I didn’t remember much other than that moose until I watched the entire series on DVD several years ago. The re-discovered show was instantly a favorite for its consistently philosophical, yet comedic, treatment of the human condition. I still don’t run into many people who remember the dramedy. It seems to be largely forgotten, which is strange considering that it won two Peabody Awards and the series creators, Joshua Brand and John Falsey, and many of the show’s writers would go on to create and write episodes of The Sopranos. While my list of favorite shows continues to grow,...

Cliffhanger
Directed by Renny Harlin

USA, 1993
Cliffhanger grips you from the start.
The film opens with Gabe Walker (Sylvester Stallone) scaling up the side of a mountain without the aid of a harness.
Once he reaches the peak, he comes across a couple, Hal and Sarah (Michael Rooker and Michelle Joyner), both of whom happen to be his friends.
Hal, an experienced climber himself, has broken his leg while they were on a climb, leading Gabe to come save them.
With the help of his girlfriend, Jessie (Janine Turner), Gabe is able to tether a line between a rescue helicopter and the precipice where they are precariously stranded.
Using a harness, Hal is able to pull himself to safety, across the ominous void. But when it’s Sarah’s turn, her equipment fails, leaving her hanging 4000 feet above ground.

The introduction of a transgendered contestant to the Miss Universe competition has many confused and prompted all sorts of weird comments from Donald Trump, who is ostensibly in charge of these things.
