Chris Hemsworth recently revealed to Entertainment Tonight that he tried hard to land a role in a Kevin Costner-directed project only to learn that Costner had cast himself as the character instead. The “Thor” star did not reveal what the movie was, although he described it as something “abstract and interesting …a small story about a man and a woman.”
“There was a movie, a script that I’d read and loved and was like, ‘I want to get that,’ and then someone said, ‘Kevin Costner has that [role],’” Hemsworth said. “I’d love [to have] him as a director. I was like, ‘Goddamnit!’ [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he was like, ‘I’m doing it, kid.’ Didn’t work. I didn’t get the part.”

Loving Adam Sandler means making your peace with the actor's wildly inconsistent output. It's not like The Sandman has ever been a critical darling; even during his rise to superstardom in the '90s, "Happy Gilmore" and "The Wedding Singer" were the only movies of his that you could reasonably call well-reviewed (and that's coming from an ardent "Billy Madison" defender). But the films that he's churned out under his Happy Madison Productions, which was founded in 1999, have been all over the place quality-wise. Even most die-hard Sandlites probably wouldn't go to the mattresses over stinkers like "Jack and Jill" and "Grown Ups 2."
That's only become doubly true since Sandler entered his alliance with Netflix in the 2010s. Sometimes, you end up with little more than "content" for viewers to stream and immediately forget, but you can also get remarkably good stuff like "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected...

The iconic actor, director, and Hollywood heartthrob Kevin Costner has long been known for his audacious decisions in both on- and off-screen roles (such as his Yellowstone exit). But his latest move might leave fans and critics alike with a sense of confusion—and maybe a little bit of envy.
The former star of Yellowstone revealed recently that he did cast his son in Horizon: An American Saga without even holding a traditional audition. The two-part story of the forthcoming flick has been Costner’s passion project. Entertainment Tonight was informed by the two-time Oscar winner about his commitment to the work on this Western epic.

Also, the actor, 69, acknowledged that the character he portrays in the film, Hayes Ellison, inspired the name of his son.

Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.
During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

Kevin Costner is hoping a few years from now, moviegoers will have the opportunity to binge four Horizon movies in theaters.
“Maybe a year and a half, two years from now, they will come (to theaters) for 12 hours,” he told the assembled crowd of theater owners Tuesday at CinemaCon, where he teased his two-part Horizon films.
So far, only two of his planned four films have been made, he acknowledged, but he has two more scripts ready to go, should the risky film project he helped finance be successful.
“When I think about the promise of America, there was a promise out here, if you could go. If you were tough enough, if you were mean enough, if you were resourceful enough, if you were lucky enough, you could take what you wanted in America,” Costner said of the appeal of the American West. “That promise meant that we step...

“Horizon: An American Saga,” Kevin Costner’s wildly ambitious, sprawling, risky and quite possibly foolhardy two-part Western rode into CinemaCon on Tuesday.
The films, which will premiere this summer, were partially financed by Costner, who mortgaged his ranch to help raise the money for the $100 million epic. “Hopefully the people come and they keep coming and they binge your theaters,” Costner told cinema operators at Warner Bros. presentation. “There’s something in me that wanted to make this movie, and I never make one that I think won’t blow up.”
And he hinted he’s not done yet, revealing there are even more chapters on, well, the horizon. No matter how the final film ends up, Costner gets points for sheer persistence. After all, he’s been trying to get the film off the ground for decades, starting in 1988 and then trying to shoot it again in 2003 without success.

Bring your pink suit to the dry cleaners because Legally Blonde is making a comeback, and you’ll want to dress to impress! According to Deadline, Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine company will partner with Amazon MGM Studios for a Legally Blonde spinoff TV series. The long-anticipated project comes from Gossip Girl writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who will also produce through their Fake Empire studio. Plot details remain a mystery, though Witherspoon’s involvement with the project gives me good vibes.
Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter will produce the Legally Blonde spinoff TV series via Hello Sunshine alongside Legally Blonde film producer Marc Platt. Deadline says there’s a chance we could get more than one spinoff series inspired by Legally Blonde, but details are fuzzier than the eraser toppers Elle Woods keeps in her purse.
Released in 2001, Legally Blonde stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a fashionable sorority queen whom her boyfriend dumps.

The actress will recur in the upcoming Matlock series from creator Jennie Snyder Urman (Jane the Virgin, Charmed reboot) our sister site Deadline reports. Exclusive: Kevin Alves (Yellowjackets) has landed a recurring role in Netflix’s eight-episode comedy series No Good Deed from creator Liz Feldman (Dead to Me), Deadline has learned.
The actor plays Nate, the strait-laced, hard-edged son of Mikey (Denis Leary), with whom he has a strained relationship. As previously announced, Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow lead the cast, which also includes Linda Cardellini, Luke Wilson, Abbi Jacobson, Poppy Liu, Leary and O-t Fagbenle.
No Good Deed is a half-hour, dark comedy that follows three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish-style villa that they think will solve all their problems. But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare.
Feldman serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum for Gloria Sanchez Productions, Christie Smith, and Silver Tree, who will direct the pilot and additional episodes.

Dylan Mulvaney is dreaming big, and one of the characters she would like to play is Elle Woods from Legally Blonde.
In a recent interview, the singer and actress said that her dream theater role was to play Glinda in Wicked, but her “dream dream” was to portray the Harvard Law School student that Reese Witherspoon famously played in the 2001 film.
“My dream though is to do a trans Legally Blonde,” Mulvaney said in an interview with IMDb during SXSW. “I wanna play Elle Woods and have maybe a trans Emmett and a trans Paulette. And I think what’s so cool about plugging trans people into existing stories is it inherently changes what the topic is, but in a way that you don’t actually have to do much to the script because it becomes something different — but actually, I think it makes it even more powerful.”

In the episode of "The X-Files" called "Bad Blood," Agents Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Mulder (David Duchovny) have to get their story straight after Mulder murders a young man (Patrick Renna) believing him to be a vampire. Know immediately that "Bad Blood" is one of the rare comedy episodes of "The X-Files," and that it is deeply beloved by X-Philes the world over. Indeed, /Film listed it as the best episode of the series, replacing the show's usual funereal tone with one of whimsy. This is an episode wherein Mulder, when knocked in the head, uncontrollably begins singing "Theme from Shaft."
"Bad Blood" is told in a pair of flashbacks, telling slightly different versions of the same event, "Rashomon"-style. Scully recalls investigating a series of mysterious cattle exsanguinations in Texas and is careful to relate Mulder's behavior as cavalier and condescending. She also notes that there was no evidence of vampires.

Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western saga arrives this summer: here’s the new trailer, but no UK release yet.
Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.
In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.
As far as I’ve been able to ascertain, and heck I’ve been looking, there’s been no deal...

Take a look at more footage from Oscar winning director Kevin Costner’s new 4-part movie series "Horizon: An American Saga", rated 'R' for "violence, nudity and sexuality," chronicling a 15-year span of pre-and post-'Civil War' settlement of the ‘American Old West’, releasing June 28, 2024 (Chapter 1) and August 16, 2024 (Chapter 2) in theaters:
"A lot of times we measure ourselves against other generations," said Costner about his new film series.

Long before he sauntered into the role of John Dutton III and seized the reins of the family ranch on Yellowstone, Kevin Costner was one of the most in-demand filmmakers and leading men in Hollywood.
Now, the Oscar- and Emmy-winner is ditching the small screen and returning to his roots.
In what might be his most ambitious project to date, Costner has directed a sprawling Western epic that will be released in theaters in two parts this summer.
This is a man who was born to saddle up and gaze into the camera from beneath a wide-brimmed Stetson, so naturally, Costner will be playing the lead role in both films.
The first trailer dropped today, and anticipation among Costner devotees and horse opera fanatics is at an all-time high.
So, without further ado, here's everything we know about Horizon: An American Saga.

Kevin Costner on Monday shared on socials a first trailer for Horizon, the two-part Western epic that played a role in his growing frustrations with his Yellowstone experience.
Before the WGA strike began last May, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan had completed scripts for the back half of the show’s fifth season that did not include Costner, whose alleged demands had been widely reported. Per the industry-insider newsletter Puck, Costner’s reps later expressed his desire to return for Season 5B and possibly more.

Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.
The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.
Costner wrote the script for “Horizon” with Jon Baird, produces with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, directs, and stars. It’s his first time directing a film since 2003’s “Open Range,...

Kevin Costner has revealed the trailer for the first installment of Horizon: An American Saga, his upcoming multi-part, self-funded western. Horizon Part One is set to hit theaters on June 28th, 2024, with part two following just weeks later on August 16th.
Horizon has been Costner’s passion project for decades, having first begun working on it in 1988. He wrote directed, and stars in the film — and also largely financed it himself (apparently by mortgaging his house). It’s also the reason why Costner decided to depart Yellowstone.
After securing a distribution deal with Warner Bros. and New Line in 2022, Costner left the set of Yellowstone and headed to Utah, where he shot the first two installments of Horizon in succession. Depending on the success of those films, Costner hopes to make two more installments.

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast “Horizon: An American Saga” Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. Few Hollywood stars alive today are as closely associated with the Western as Kevin Costner. From Dances With Wolves, to Open Range, to Wyatt Earp and beyond, he’s long seemed at home in the Old West, telling stories of American history. Not to mention, in recent years he’s rustled up millions of viewers as the figurehead of Yellowstone, one of the biggest TV phenomenons of the last decade. But it’s now that he’s about to unleash his all-out Western epic – a long-gestating passion project titled Horizon: An American Saga, in which he stars as well as directing, co-writing (along with Jon Baird), and produces. It is, in fact, two feature-length movies – actually set to be four, if he continues to the full fruition of his vision – to be released cinematically this summer. And he’s invested in this in a huge way – literally, since it’s...

Sorting through America’s history is a Herculean task. Humans built the nation with blood, sweat, and tears, watering the soil with memory, pain, and perseverance. Today, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer explores the settlement of America’s Western frontier from the Indigenous groups who blessed the land to those who occupied it by force. Horizon will be Kevin Costner‘s first time directing a movie since Open Range in 2003. He also busted out his directing chops for The Postman and Dances with Wolves, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”
Here’s the official synopsis for Horizon: An American Saga courtesy of Warner Bros.:

Hollywood is going through a two-parter movie phase right now. In the past two years, we've seen big franchises like "Fast & Furious," "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," and "Mission: Impossible" all split sequels into two parts, while franchise hopefuls like "Dune" and "Rebel Moon" have also become two-parter movies. Even "Wicked" is hoping to tell its story in two movies. On paper, most of those decisions make some sense: Those are big genre movies with loads of story (and a lot of potential money to be made from extending that story), so rather than make one very long movie, they've opted for two. What is much more surprising is seeing a Western join that club. But that isn't stopping Kevin Costner from turning his passion project "Horizon: An American Saga" into one of the biggest box office gambles of 2024. This is Costner's first directorial effort in 21 years, and much like in 2003 with "Open Range,...

When Kevin Costner revealed the trailer for “Horizon: An American Saga,” the first of his planned four-part epic about the American West, the two-time Academy Award winner looked positively giddy — at least over Zoom.
“Trailers have always been kind of a favorite part for me, even as a boy going to the movies,” Costner said, grinning as he unveiled the first footage in a virtual conversation with journalists. “You’re obviously there to see the movie you want, but isn’t it kind of cool when you see what’s coming? … And with that in mind, I did my very best to expose what’s going to be a four-part saga.”
“Horizon” chapters 1 and 2 will have a dual theatrical release from Warner Bros., with the first film hitting theaters on June 28 and the second debuting August 16. Costner’s goal in crafting the trailer was to find the moments in the...

Archstone Entertainment has acquired international rights to “American Dreamer,” a dark comedy starring Peter Dinklage, Shirley MacLaine, Kim Quinn, Matt Dillon and Danny Glover. Paul Dektor (“Frayed”) directs a script written by Theodore Melfi (“Hidden Figures”).
The movie is based on a true story from Chicago Public Radio’s ”This American Life” and follows Dr. Phil Loder (Dinklage), a low-level adjunct professor of economics at Harvard, whose grand dream of owning a home is tragically out of reach — until an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes his way when a lonely, childless, near-death widow (MacLaine) offers Phil her sprawling estate for pennies. But Phil quickly learns the deal is too good to be true.
Dinklage is best known for his work on “Game of Thrones.” MacLaine won an Oscar for “Terms of Endearment” and starred in “The Apartment” and “Postcards From the Edge.” Dillon’s credits include “Crash” and “There’s Something About Mary.

Abigail Breslin is subtle as the 1960s victim of sexual crime in a dramatisation of a landmark case that is a welcome defence of US jurisprudence
Here is a fraught and muscular courtroom drama in the strident 1990s style, with the US legal system fitted out with a top-notch cast including Luke Wilson, Ryan Phillippe, Andy Garcia, Donald Sutherland and Kyle MacLachan. The Warner Bros. Animation film follows the relationship of Bruce and his son, Damian, an 8-year-old desperate to be just like his crime-fighting father. The only problem — beyond him being a literal child — is that crime no longer exists in Gotham. Batman decided to clean up the streets for good to give Damian a shot at the safe, crime-free childhood Bruce didn’t have.
But when his overprotective father is called to save the day in Nova Scotia on Christmas Eve and becomes stranded in a trap laid by Mr. Freeze, Damian is left home alone with no one to help him as two criminals break in. The hapless burglars manage to make off with his newly gifted utility belt, leading Damian on a chase through Gotham’s...
