The Teenage Desires Driving John Carpenter’s ‘Christine’ [Horror Queers Podcast]

Smart Sl*t

After a month spent tackling doppelgänger titles like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (listen) and The Stepford Wives (listen), we briefly hit pause to discuss Panic Room (listen), then went back to doubles with Disturbing Behavior. Now it’s time for a 180 with a look at John Carpenter‘s adaptation of Stephen King‘s book, Christine (1983).

In the film, Keith Gordon stars as Arnie, a shy nerd in high school with a single good friend: Dennis (John Stockwell). When Arnie spots a cherry red 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine, however, everything changes…including his behavior.

The once shy and timid boy dresses different, pursues a relationship with new student Leigh (Alexandra Paul), and becomes more aggressive with everyone, including his parents and Dennis. After drawing the ire of a trio of thugs, led by Buddy (William Ostrander), Arnie’s beloved car is destroyed, but the vehicle seems to...

Young Tourists Find Themselves in a Waking Nightmare in This Brutal and Underappreciated Horror Movie
Image
When it came out in 2006, Turistas generated primarily negative reviews, and the film still retains a crushing 19% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Looking back at it and its major themes now, it seems like it's time to admit: this film, directed by John Stockwell and starring Melissa George, Josh Duhamel and Olivia Wilde, isn't as spectacularly bad as it was painted originally. Rather, it was put down in a major way by the release of Eli Roth's Hostelearlier that year.

The Halle Berry Horror Flop With 0% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
When Halle Berry made her big-screen debut as the crack-addicted Vivian in the most harrowing section of Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever," she put the entire world on notice that she was going to be an actor first and a movie star second. Obviously, she would quickly learn early in her career to play the Hollywood game and accept thinly-written roles that asked her to do little more than look like one of the most breathtakingly beautiful people on the planet, but she never went more than a year or two without challenging herself. This was particularly difficult to do, given the dearth of complex roles being written for Black women at the time.

Berry was 10 years into her film acting career when she landed the role that would change everything for her. As Leticia Musgrove in Marc Forster's bleak 2001 drama "Monster's Ball," she summoned up a fierce symphony of heartbreak,...

10 Great Biker Movies For Fans Of Sons Of Anarchy
Image
Sons of Anarchy is one of the most popular biker TV shows of all time, running for seven seasons and making a significant impact on the genre. One of the most important pieces of the series is Charlie Hunnman's performance as Jax Teller, a member of a fictionalized outlaw biker gang in California. Influenced by the real-life Hell's Angels, Sons of Anarchy doesn't rely on its action and inherent drama to propel the plot forward, as it grapples with the realities of rival gangs and the role the organization plays in larger social issues.

Katey Sagal's turn as Gemma, Jax's mother, is also notable. It's hard to find other TV shows like Sons of Anarchy, as the series evolved so much across its many seasons. However, there are many movies like Sons of Anarchy that feature biker gangs and clearly serve as inspiration for the show. Biker films often...

What The Cast Of John Carpenters Christine Has Done Since 1983
Image
With many decades having passed since the 1983 release of John Carpenter's Christine, it's safe to say that the movie's cast has done a lot since then. Carpenter's horror film was written by Bill Phillips, based on Stephen King's horror novel of the same name. It follows a teenage nerd named Arnie Cunningham, who becomes obsessed with his new car, the titular Christine. Like the author's other works, the story takes a dark turn, with Christine revealed to be one of Stephen King's many killer cars prevalent in his novels and short stories.

Given its focus on teenage characters, the film adaptation starred a number of young actors who were just starting out in their careers, including Alexandra Paul, John Stockwell, and Kelly Preston. While relative unknowns in 1983, they've mostly gone on to have long careers in the many years since Christine's premiere, becoming much bigger names than they...

Yes, Tim Robbins Was In Top Gun Why He Didn't Return For Maverick
Image
Tim Robbins played Lt. Sam "Merlin" Wells in Top Gun, stepping in to replace Goose after the latter's death. Robbins makes his role memorable and believable as a pilot, supporting Maverick without stealing the spotlight. Robbins likely didn't return for Top Gun: Maverick due to a principle of avoiding sequels, despite the film's success.

Some people may not remember, but Tim Robbins was in Top Gun, though surprisingly, he didn't return for Top Gun: Maverick. It's hard to describe just how influential Top Gun is in the action drama genre, but if the number of movies like Top Gun that came out after Tony Scott's film is any indication, the movie continues to influence Hollywood decades later. Over 30 years after the original, Top Gun: Maverick came out to worldwide acclaim and a massive box office, proving that the Top Gun brand was as powerful and sensational as ever.

Christine Director John Carpenter Says Bryan Fuller's Remake Will 'Probably' Be Better
Image
Legendary director John Carpenter is optimistic about Bryan Fuller improving on his adaptation of Stephen King's Christine.

In an interview with Total Film Magazine, Carpenter spoke about the Keith Gordon-led supernatural thriller about a murderous red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury in time for the original movie's 40th anniversary. Carpenter had previously discussed his dissatisfaction with Christine despite its moderate success at the box office. Now with the Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods showrunner at the helm of a Christine update for Blumhouse, Carpenter believes Fuller can improve on the original's shortcomings. "Oh boy," Carpenter said. "Well, good luck to him. It will probably be better."

Christine 40 Years Later: The Perfect Blend of Stephen King and John Carpenter
Image
People have always been fascinated by the subject of evil. Where does it come from? What forms could it take? But there are two people who understand fear better than anyone. In 1983, John Carpenter directed the film Christine based on the book by Stephen King that came out the same year. This project was the perfect blend of two top-of-their-game auteurs.

Let's take a look at Christine 40 years after its 1983 release.

When King Met Carpenter

Stephen King was at the top of his game in the early 80s. He was churning out horror novels at the most rapid-fire pace, and people loved it. The year before, he had seen the publishing of his first Dark Tower novel, The Gunslinger, which would go on to spawn one of the most successful series of the 20th century.

At the same time, John Carpenter was creating some of the most cutting-edge horror films of the time.

Paul Walker's 15 Biggest Films, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Paul Walker enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood that carried him through various roles in several unique movies before his unfortunate death in 2013 at just 40 years old. Fans likely remember him best as Brian O'Conner in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, but the talented and handsome actor also appeared in critical hits such as "Pleasantville," "Joy Ride," and Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers," and served as executive producer on the films "Vehicle 19," "Hours," and "Pawn Shop Chronicles." He even enjoyed a guest spot on National Geographic's "Expedition Great White" in 2009.

In his youth, Walker popped up in a variety of high-profile TV shows, among them "Highway to Heaven," "Charles in Charge," "Who's the Boss," and "Touched by an Angel," before making the leap to schlocky B-movie horror films such as "Tammy and the Rex," opposite Denise Richards, in which his character's brain somehow lands inside a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Wtf Happened to Losin’ It?
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Pop quiz – what’s the most obscure Tom Cruise movie? If you’re thinking Lions for Lambs or maybe Far and Away, or even my beloved All the Right Moves, you’re wrong. Tom Cruise’s most obscure movie ever is, without a doubt, 1983’s Losin’ It. One of four films Cruise made in 1983, this had the misfortune of being released just a few months before Cruise’s career took off. It only made just over 1 million at the box office but would have easily made many more times that had it been held just a few more months, with Cruise becoming a household name by the end of that summer.

So why is Losin’ It so obscure? It’s a strange addition to Cruise’s filmography in that it’s a wacky sex comedy that has more in common with Porky’s than it does the classy Risky Business.

The bell just rang, school is out for summer. Maybe it’s out forever—leaving school behind as our heroes and antiheroes spend long, hot days laying about in the city or countryside, anticipating college dreams or fearing a return to the classroom. Or, more likely, not thinking of studies at all, just anticipating the next summer day and how to score more thrills. As the season winds down, here is a mix that is an ode to the teenage summer—so wonderfully captured in many films—a choice selection that evokes endless possibilities: sweat, love, passion, booze, drugs, and questions of the great unknown just around the corner. The characters of these summertime stories are either breaking hearts, heartbroken, running from hell or somewhere lost in between. Some favorite moments include the confusion, chaos and otherworldly essence of Gheorghe Zamfir’s flute from the unforgettable score for Peter Weir...

Kate Bosworth: ‘Blue Crush’ Could Have Easily Been ‘Exploitative’ with Other Male Directors
Image
Kate Bosworth didn’t let early 2000s Hollywood crush her ahead of her big break in “Blue Crush.”

The actress reflected on her breakout role and easily what could have been a bikini-clad “Girls Gone Wild” parody of a sports surfing film.

“I was reading a lot of scripts in 2001, and the parts for women were certainly not multidimensional,” Bosworth told Vulture. “The ones that were exhibiting a lot of depth were quite competitive, and I was a ‘no one’ at the time. Being a young blonde girl, there were a lot of roles that were stereotypical bitchy, dumb, or vapid. Not getting roles wasn’t frustrating because that’s the name of the game, but the stereotypes felt disappointing.”

She added, “If you remember the early 2000s, they could be pretty cruel for young girls, so I was feeling a little dejected.”

That is, until director John Stockwell and...

Stephen King's Christine Remake Is Happening at Blumhouse with Hannibal Creator
Image
Stephen King's Christine is getting rebooted. Originally a novel penned by King that was later adapted into a movie by John Carpenter, Christine is a simple horror story about a cursed car with a mind of its own. Nearly four decades after the first movie was released, a new movie adaptation has just entered the early stages of development at Sony Pictures and Blumhouse.

Bryan Fuller is on board to direct the new Christine, and word is his idea is to keep the remake set in the 80s and faithful to the source material. Jason Blum will produce for Blumhouse alongside Vincenzo Natali and Steven Hoban. Peter Kang will oversee the project for Sony Pictures. It's not clear at this time if King is personally involved, and no additional information about the movie has yet been revealed.

Heading into Christine, Fuller comes with some experience as a filmmaker in the horror genre.

1958 Plymouth Fury from Stephen King's Christine Movie Goes Up for Auction
Christine (1983)
If you've got half a million dollars to spare, you can soon be the proud owner of the notorious 1958 Plymouth Fury from the classic horror movie Christine. Though multiple Furys were used in the making of the movie, this one was used for the "close-up beauty shots" of the vehicle and is one of the very few which hasn't been destroyed. Of course, taking the storyline of the original story in mind, it should be noted that you would be buying this car at your own risk.

According to the auction listing, this particular Fury was raffled off on New Year's Eve for the USA Network show Night Flight, with 40,000 participants vying for their chance to win the car. The vehicle has since been a part of the Ron Pratte collection and was featured at the 35th anniversary celebration of the Christine movie at the Rochester Auto Museum in 2018. Best of all,...

Losin' It: How a Throwaway 80s Teen Comedy Launched Tom Cruise's Career [Rewind]
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Would you believe that there's a Tom Cruise film in existence that only made $1.2 million. Doesn't it seem like this guy has always been a movie star? Given that Mission: Impossible - Fallout brought in nearly $800 million, it would be easy to write off Cruise's fourth film as just a cheap, teen comedy.

With a lifetime gross of nearly $4 billion dollars at the box office, the average Tom Cruise film brings in $100 million dollars. If you really think about what Tom Cruise brings to a film, the numbers he puts up are truly astounding. So people are to be forgiven if they hear about a movie he co-starred in, and just can't imagine it being another 80s sex-romp. In many ways Losin' It is just that. In other ways this $7 million film is just about as perfect as an 80s film gets, and, when it really wants to be is...

Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Stephen King’s horror novel “From a Buick 8” is in the works as movie at Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment with William Brent Bell set to direct from his own script.

King published “From a Buick 8” — which derives its title from the 1965 Bob Dylan song “From a Buick 6” — in 2002 and set the story around the rural town of Statler, Pa., where state police have kept a mysterious 1954 Buick Roadmaster in the shed behind the barracks for over 20 years. After a well-liked member of the troop is killed by a drunk driver, his son begins to visit the barracks and the cops begin telling Ned about the “Buick 8,” which turns out to have a malevolent spirit.

‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Film Review: Oprah Hitchhikes the Galaxy in Trippy Kiddie Treat
Ava DuVernay at an event for 30th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards (2015)
Awash in bold colors, bright patterns and ebullient kids, director Ava DuVernay’s new take on “A Wrinkle in Time” dazzles its way across time and space even if it doesn’t quite stick the landing. A psychedelic journey for 6-year-olds of all ages, this big-screen adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel offers trippy delights without defying the novel’s “unfilmable” reputation. Still, DuVernay and screenwriters Jennifer Lee (“Frozen”) and John Stockwell (“Bridge to Terabithia”) give it their all, imbuing as much epic grandeur as they can into a story that seems to take place over the course of a languid afternoon. ‘Armed Response’ DVD Review
Stars: Wesley Snipes, Seth Rollins, Anne Heche, Dave Annable, Kyle Clements, Morgan Roberts, Eyas Younis, Mo Gallini, Mike Seal | Written by Matt Savelloni | Directed by John Stockwell

Another month, another Wesley Snipes film. He sure is on the comeback trail now right? Ok, maybe not, especially given that this, like Final Recall, has headed direct to DVD. To be fair though, the “another month, another…” could also apply to WWE studios, who seem to have gone back to churning out direct to market films much like when they first stepped into the world of film production. Following the usual standard of having one of the many WWE Superstars take a break from the wrestling ring and appear on-screen, Armed Response features the “Kingslayer” himself, Seth Rollins, in a supporting role – yes, a supporting role. Unlike ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, Dolph Ziggler, John Cena, Randy Orton, The Miz, and hell, even...

Saban Films Acquires Us Distribution Rights to Remake of George A. Romero’s Day Of The Dead
Featuring arguably the most beloved zombie ever put to film, George A. Romero's Day of the Dead is a seminal standout in the horror genre that has grown a diehard fanbase in the thirty-plus years since its release. New takes on Romero's groundbreaking 1985 film were featured in 2005's Day of the Dead 2: Contagium and 2008's Day of the Dead, and now Saban Films has acquired the Us rights to Millennium Media's new Day of the Dead reimagining, with a release expected late this year:

Press Release: Toronto – September 9, 2017 – Saban Films has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to a slate of films from Avi Lerner’s Millennium Media. John Stockwell at an event for Blue Crush (2002)
'Armed Response': Film Review
John Stockwell at an event for Blue Crush (2002)
A team of commandos tries to secure a secret site housing a lie-detecting supercomputer in John Stockwell's Armed Response, but that's far from the whole picture. First-timer Matt Savelloni's, er, ambitious screenplay aims to pivot from John Carpenter-style under-siege thrills to a weird sort of supernatural-vengeance horror. But it fails on these and several other fronts, making an inauspicious choice for Wesley Snipes' first top-billed theatrical release since he got out of prison in 2013. The picture's idiocy might have been predicted from the press release announcing it as the first joint venture between geriatric sleaze-rocker Gene Simmons and the...

Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in Top Gun (1986)
Top Gun 2 Gets a Summer 2019 Release Date
Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in Top Gun (1986)
Paramount Pictures has finally firmed up plans for the long-awaited Top Gun 2, setting Joseph Kosinski to direct, reuniting him with Oblivion star Tom Cruise, and announcing a July 12, 2019 release date. We first reported that Joseph Kosinski was being sought to direct this sequel last month, and now his deal has been finalized. While it hasn't been confirmed when filming will begin, a previous report claimed the sequel will start filming next year, which may be accurate given this new release date.

Deadline broke the news about this sequel today, although it didn't confirm a previous report regarding the title. Earlier this month, while promoting The Mummy, Tom Cruise teased that that this Top Gun sequel will be called Top Gun: Maverick, because he "didn't want a number" in the title. This report did reveal, though, that the story will follow Maverick, who is now a flight instructor, "teaching the young...

Wesley Snipes Stars in First Trailer for Sci-Fi Action 'Armed Response'
"Whoever did this is still inside." Saban Films has debuted the trailer for a weird new sci-fi action thriller titled Armed Response, starring Wesley Snipes - who seems to be back in action between this and The Recall. The film is about a crew of special forces soldiers who go to a special high-tech military compound to investigate the disappearance of another team guarding the facility. The facility, known as a "Temple", is run by artificial intelligence designed to interrogate high level prisoners. But things get very strange as soon as they arrive. This also stars Anne Heche, Dave Annable, Gene Simmons, Anthony Azizi, and WWE Superstar Seth Rollins. I really don't know what to think of this - could be bad, could be okay. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for John Stockwell's Armed Response, direct from YouTube: A team of special forces soldiers approach...

I never pictured Anne Heche teaming up with Wesley Snipes in an action movie, but crazier things have happened in cinema. Nicknamed the "Temple," the [...]...

The Pros and Cons of Looking Back: Close-Up on John Carpenter’s "Christine" and "Starman"
Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. John Carpenter's Christine (1983) is showing May 4 - June 3 and Starman (1984) is showing May 5 - June 4, 2017 in the United Kingdom.ChristineWas it too dark? Too bleak? Too gory? Did it have the misfortune of opening when American moviegoers were flocking to E.T.? Either way, when John Carpenter's The Thing landed in the summer of 1982, with an apocalyptic cliffhanger and the most surreally grotesque, tactile, gooey monster effects you never realized could be put on film, it fizzled. "It was hated," Carpenter later recalled at a screening in Los Angeles. "Hated by fans. I lost a job. People hated me. They thought I was this horrible, violent—" He trailed off and joked, "And I was." The audience laughed, because by now The Thing's exalted place in movie geek culture is secure: an exquisitely paranoid horror classic and arguably the crown...
