It was still some years before he attained iconic status as a Bollywood villain while revealing his real identity to the bemused hero in his trademark soft yet menacing drawl, but before Ajit, whose birth anniversary falls on January 27, became the “Loin”, he had to receive a salutary lesson in dealing with big cats onscreen – from Balraj Sahni.
Ajit recalled they were shooting for costume swashbuckler “Dharti” (1970) – a remake of Tamil film “Sivandha Mann” with Rajendra Kumar stepping into the shoes of Sivaji Ganesan, and a scene had him, as the evil Diwan, coming down on a lift with a tiger on a leash to where Sahni was waiting.
However, Sahni refused to go along, noting that he had agreed to “work with humans, not beasts”, and the scene had to be shot without him.

Like many other starstruck youths, he came to Bombay with dreams of becoming a hero, banking on his imposing stature, rough-hewn looks, and a baritone voice. He did succeed in his aim, but only partially, for most of his films sank without a trace, and playing second leads was no consolation.
It was only by crossing the moral line – onscreen – didAjit make his name in Hindi films – of a larger than life, deep-dyed, but suave and sophisticated villain. He complemented the entire package by lowering his trademark voice to a beguilingly softer, yet with sinister undertones, conveying both menace and mockery.

Winner of the Golden Leopard in Locarno for the first time in Singaporean cinema, “A Land Imagined” is an intriguing urban noir that unfolds much like a dream.
“A Land Imagined” is screening at Five Flavours Festival
Set in industrial Singapore, in the country’s coastline that has been reclaimed from other countries like Vietnam and Malaysia, the story begins with police detective Lok investigating the disappearance of migrant worker Wang. Lok, who suffers from insomnia, undertakes his task with very little eagerness, but the story becomes more complex when another worker who used to hang out with Wang, Ajit, also goes missing. Somewhere at that point, the focus of the story changes and Wang becomes the central character. We witness him also suffering from insomnia after an accident during work that has him working as a driver for half the meager pay he already received. His lack of sleep...

As the California Assembly prepares to vote on the state’s net neutrality bill, the WGA West is advocating for a federal appeal of the FCC’s December ruling on the touchy subject.
“Last year, the Federal Communications Commission’s Chairman [Ajit] Pai repealed open Internet protections, leaving powerful Internet providers free to decide what content reaches viewers and how, harming content creators and consumers alike,” the Wgaw statement reads. “The decision to abandon those protections, which had been overwhelmingly supported by the public and upheld in court, was factually and legally unsound. The Writers Guild of America West has joined fellow intervenors in filing a brief in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to challenge the FCC’s abdication of its responsibilities to protect competition and ensure a free and open Internet.”

A jaded cop in Singapore investigates the disappearance of a Chinese construction worker in Yeo Siew Hua’s predictable noir “A Land Imagined.” Set in the city’s underbelly and shot almost entirely at night, the film privileges style over coherence, indulging in pointless time shifts and giving short shrift to too many characters. Any discussion of the quasi-slave-like situation for most of the country’s external laborers is important, and Yeo adds some good lines about how the city-state is literally built from foreign soil, yet “Land” will feel overly familiar to those looking for more than well-intentioned musings on the horrendous treatment of guest workers. Locarno’s jury clearly thought otherwise by giving it their top prize, but it’s hard to imagine the movie going beyond the usual indie festival destinations.

Nidhi Dutta is the latest star kid who is gearing up to join the Bollywood brigade. Daughter of prolific film maker Jp Dutta, the man behind movies like Refugee and Border, Nidhi has been hard at work to make a lasting impression on audiences.
She will be making her debut opposite Nafisa Ali’s son Ajit Sodhi in a film by debutant director Binoy Gandhi. Unlike most actresses who are comfortable doing bold scenes on the big screen, Nidhi has expressed her unwillingness to do intimate scenes for this movie. This has prompted the makers to remove these parts from the script. The main reason given by Nidhi is that her father doesn’t want to her to enact such scenes and skin show on the big screen is also a big no-no. Nidhi has no issues with this and is planning on selecting her roles carefully.

"Saara Shaher Mujhe Loin Ke Naam Se Jaanta Hai," roared Ajit, the numero uno villain of the early 70s in Subhash Ghai's hit film Kalicharan. For the younger generation who do not recognize him can identify the stylish villain in Amitabh Bachchan starrer Zanjeer (who played Dindayal Teja) and in Dharmendra's hit film Yaadon Ki Baaraat (as Shakal). His other hit films include Dharma, Jugnu, Khote Sikkay, Warrant, Mr. Natwarlal, etc
Ajit's biggest contribution to cinema is his revolutionary, savvy gentleman style that he imparted to villainy, which for long had been typecast as loud and wild. Ajit's unique style became so popular that it became his trademark style till he breathed his last.
How Ajit invented this style is an interesting tale. In an interview, Ajit had revealed, "The character of Dindayal Teja which I portrayed in Zanjeer was actually inspired from a real-life personality.

Subhash Ghai has a tradition of building memorable characters on screen, from Ajit in Kalicharan to Anupam Kher in Karma to Simi Garewal in Karz. This stems from one of the core beliefs of Subhash Ghai, which is every character is important and no role is big or small.
One of the main reasons for the success of the characters in Subhash Ghai films is the excellent casting. “Saara shehar mujhe Lion ke naam se jaanta hai” is a line that one cannot imagine coming anyone else but Ajit . “Is thappad ki goonj suni tumne?” has been immortalized by Anupam Kher and has been repeated every time there has been a slap. Gulshan Grover who was an upcoming actor saw his career’s breakthrough performance as Kesariya Vilayati in Ram Lakhan and came to be known as the “Bad Man” in Bollywood after his lines from the film.

Going by their popularity, the Tamilians seem to have taken over Bollywood. By far the two busiest showbiz personalities in Mumbai are Prabhu Dheva and Prakash Raj. Both are working in back-to-back projects, and in Prakash's case, the projects are distressingly overlapping. So busy is Prakash Raj with his arch-villainy act that Apoorva Lakhia, whose Zanjeer is being readied for release, had to travel this week to Bangkok for the actor's dubbing. Prakash is shooting for writers-turned-directorial-duo Sajid-Farhad's It's Entertainment. Says a source from Bangkok, "We were surprised to see Apoorva Lakhia at our location. We thought he had come to meet Akshay Kumar for a narration. But he told us he is here to dub with Prakash Raj." Further probing revealed that all the other actors including the enormously-busy Ramcharan and Priyanka Chopra had already dubbed for Zanjeer. Only Prakash Raj's dubbing remained. Says the source,...

Pran Kishan Sikand
Pran Kishan Sikand dreamt of becoming a professional photographer. Little did he know that a measly, humble ‘paan’ (betel leaf) would change his life and set him on his destined path. It was 1939 or thereabouts. Pran was at a ‘paan’ shop at Lahore, enjoying a munch with his friends when a stranger approached him and asked whether he wanted to act in films. Pran was amused and asked his name. Stranger introduced himself as Muhammad Walli, a renowned film maker in the flourishing film district of Lahore. He said he was making a Punjabi film and Pran looked a perfect fit for the role of a villain in the film. Pran just brushed him off. Walli kept insisting that he pay a visit to the studio, and pushed a piece of paper with his address into Pran’s hands. The film was Yamla Jat (1940), a runaway hit that year.

Bindu's iconic 'Mona Darling' act in Zanjeer in 1973 is now being taken over by the audacious and saucy Mahie Gill.
This week, Gill was signed for the coveted role above the other top contenders for the iconic part--Mallika Sherawat, Malaika Arora and Jacqueline Fernandez-- on the strength of her "raw earthy appeal".
We also hear that Mahie's seduction of the arch-villain Teja, played by Ajit in the original and by Prakash Raj in the remake, would exceed all the limits imposed by Bindu's conservative vamping in the 1970s.
While Bindu (married to her husband and to self-censorship when she reigned with her vampish voluptuousness during the 1970s) got away with slit dresses and body stocking showing thunder thighs and buxom torsos in Zanjeer, Mahie, we are told, would be doing some heavy duty love-making scenes with Prakash Raj and would also need to get into better shape for a bikini.
