Exclusive: Lifetime has given a green light to How To Murder Your Husband, one of the network’s new Ripped from the Headlines movies announced today, starring Cybill Shepherd (The Client List) and Steve Guttenberg. It’s slated for premiere on Saturday, January 14 at 8 pm/7c.
The project marks Shepherd’s return to Lifetime following her previous starring role in The Client List and a guest-starring role on Drop Dead Diva.
Based on a true story, the movie revolves around Nancy Crampton-Brophy, played by Shepherd, who seemed to have a knack for writing about murder. The Portland-based romance-thriller novelist authored books about relationships that were tumultuous, while using seductive men on the covers to lure in her readers. Often, her books featured women protagonists who fantasized about killing their own husbands or fleeing their husbands and faking their own deaths. And then, in 2022 in a shocking turn of events,...

The big story surrounding Grayson Moore and Aidan Shipley’s feature debut Cardinals playing the Toronto International Film Festival stems from the fact that both men graduated from the city’s own Ryerson University. As a longtime festival venue/partner, this premiere will inevitably be treated as a homecoming. But don’t let that fool you into screaming “favoritism!” while dismissing it as a “homer” pick: it’s the real deal. Stripping away the college they graduated from, the knowledge that both are Tiff alumni after screening their short Boxing, and their Canadian nationalities still leaves you with a singular work of devastating emotional psychology and infectiously biting wit. So remove the local fanfare and judge it on its own merits because it earns that right and deserves any accolade bestowed upon it.

Title: Born To Be Blue Director: Robert Budreau Starring: Ethan Hawke, Carmen Ejogo, Callum Keith Rennie, Stephen McHattie, Janet-Laine Green, Tony Nappo, Kevin Hanchard, Dan Lett, Katie Boland, Nat Leone. The charm of Robert Budreau’s ‘Born to be Blue’ is that it is not a traditional biopic. The Canadian filmmaker gets inspired by Chet Baker’s life and creatively reimagines it, intertwining events that truly occurred to the jazz trumpeter, that don’t necessarily follow the true sequence they occurred in. The cinematic narrative is sprinkled with artistic license, that allows to fully captivate audiences in falling in love with a flawed hero. Ethan Hawke lights up the screen as Chet Baker, [ Read More ]

It's not every day you start an interview with this very serious question: "Are you glad you finally got to take the bag off your head?" Then again, not every role on TV is quite like Clarissa (Katie Boland) on Reign. First introduced as a castle ghost, sneaking about in the shadows, at once protecting Mary (Adelaide Kane) and killing her friends. (Rough twist, Aylee!) But the CW hit finally revealed Clarissa's true identity (and face!) in its last episode: She's Queen Catherine's (Megan Follows) illegitimate daughter who was believed to be dead. "I am definitely glad that I finally got to take the bag off of my head, though it was an interesting challenge acting under a bag," Katie...

The new CW series Reign dabbles in historical fantasy, trying to reimagine the era when Mary (Adalaide Kane), Queen of Scots travels to France to reunite with her betrothed and destined love, Prince Francis (Toby Regbo), heir to the French throne. But Mary’s romantic illusions have not fully prepared her for the reality of political alliances that can be tossed away in favor of a strong and more strategic alliance to protect a kingdom, nor that the fickle feelings of one’s heart can be swayed by a twist of fate. In a press interview from the set, star Adelaide Kane gave the inside scoop on where Mary’s head and heart lie and whether there may be hope for the dark price Sebastian (Torrance Coombs).
We know what happens historically, but assuming there’s some wiggle room in this show, who would you like to see Mary end up with?...

Gerontophilia
Written by Bruce Labruce and Daniel Allen Cox
Directed by Bruce Labruce
Canada, 2013
Gerontophilia, or the sexual preference for the elderly, is the eponymous subject of the new film by Bruce Labruce, iconoclastic Canadian director of subversive narrative porn such as The Raspberry Reich and Hustler White, among others. Given what goes on in other Labruce films, amputee sex, “terrorist chic” sex, zombie sex, etc., the subject matter of his newest didn’t necessarily alarm the way it would for nearly other living filmmaker, Lars von Trier being a potential exception. What’s surprising is how incredibly normal and unshocking the film is, especially given Labruce’s history and the subject at hand. Many critics call this his bid at mainstream, and it could be perceived as such. But if the title doesn’t scare off most audiences, a quick trip through the director’s filmography probably will. Still,...

Canada's Bruce Labruce has been one of the more notable cinematic provocateurs of the last couple of decades. Starting off in Toronto's queercore scene, he's won acclaim on the festival circuit thanks to the taboo-busting, sexually explicit likes of "The Raspberry Reich," "Otto, Or Up With Dead People" and "L.A. Zombie" (the latter of which was banned from the Melbourne Film Festival). So when his latest film, "Gerontophilia," opens with a blank screen over which we seem to hear a woman nearing orgasm as she recites the names of "female revolutionaries" including Lizzie Borden and Winona Ryder, you'd be forgiven for expecting more of the same envelope pushing. But as it turns out, Labruce is having a sly play with the expectations of those who know his previous work, because when he fades in, there's nothing more than kissing—albeit enthusiastically received kissing—going on, between French-Canadian teen Lake...

★★☆☆☆ Canadian auteur Bruce Labruce opened the Venice Days sidebar of the Biennale's 70th incarnation with Gerontophilia (2013), a romantic comedy (of sorts) following 18-year-old Lake (Pierre-Gabriel Lajoie), who finds himself increasingly dissatisfied with his girlfriend and at the same time attracted to older men. In order to further investigate his newfound fetish, Lake gets a job at a local nursing home for the elderly, where he gets his jollies giving the elderly bed baths and drawing them while they sleep. He becomes particularly attached to octogenarian Melvin Peabody, played with a scene stealing charm by Walter Borden.
With Lake's growing affection towards Melvin also comes anger at the way the old are treated - or, more accurately, not treated - but instead discarded by a society that has no further need for them. Lake decides to help Melvin escape in order to follow his dream of one day seeing the Pacific Ocean.

Chicago – Michael Goldbach’s little-seen quirk-fest is a feature filmmaking debut like many others. It feels less like a final draft than an overcrowded sketchpad. There seems to be no end to the amount of intriguing ideas that Goldbach wishes to tackle, but he has little idea of how to string them together. His various stylistic conceits distract from the narrative rather than enhance it, resulting in an ungainly picture.
Luckily, “Daydream Nation” is blessed with two young leads so appealing and authentic that they make viewers forget the film’s sizable flaws for long passages of its running time. Continuing on with our first look image series, tonight we’ve got the first images from director Malcolm Venville’s Henry’s Crime (which stars Keanu Reeves, Vera Farmiga, James Caan, Danny Hoch, and Fisher Stevens) and more images from Mike Goldbach’s Daydream Nation (which stars Kat Dennings, Reece Thompson, Andie MacDowell, Josh Lucas, and Rachel Blanchard). Synopses and more info after the jump:
While I’ll agree that Keanu Reeves isn’t the best actor, I think he gets more shit than he deserves. Personally, I’ve really enjoyed a lot of his movies and will usually check out whatever he’s doing…I stress the word usually, because even I wouldn’t see The Lake House.
Anyway, his new film, Henry’s Crime, premieres at the Toronto Film Festival. Here’s the synopsis:

Many people reproach Hollywood films for being too formulaic. However, despite being an independent film, Mount Pleasant looks like a product taken out of an assembly line. In fact, the only thing the film is able to look like a caricature of an independent film taking place in a North American metropolis.
The film takes place in Vancouver, the second largest city of Canada, in the neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant. This sector is mostly inhabited by poor people, but Doug (Benjamin Ratner) and Sarah (Camille Sullivan), a middle-class couple with a daughter (Haley Guiel), form an exception. While their daughter, Courtney, played in the backyard, she finds a junkie's discarded needle. After that moment, the Camerons's life becomes intertwined with that of other people. They come across Nadia (Katie Boland), a fifteen-year-old prostitute who dropped the discarded needle in front of the Camerons' house.
