For a Robert Caro fan like myself, waiting for the Pulitzer Prize–winning author’s fifth volume in his monumental Lbj biography (which launched in 1982) is a condition best described as managing intense anticipation for the continuation of our greatest living storyteller’s magnum opus, and an ever-sobering grasp of mortality: Caro is 86.
True, we can’t hurry excellence, especially one committed to pencils, a typewriter, and carbon paper. But if people like me are chomping, what must his longtime editor Robert Gottlieb be thinking? He just turned 91!
The book world’s most formidable duo for more than 50 years — since they first teamed on Caro’s reputation-making political biography “The Power Broker” — is the subject of “Turn Every Page,” one of the better documentaries about researching, writing, and reading, directed by Gottlieb’s daughter Lizzie.

Feature documentary “The Wild One,” which looks at the life of Jack Garfein, Holocaust survivor, Broadway director, Actors Studio West co-founder, and controversial filmmaker, has debuted its trailer. Tessa Louise-Salomé’s film, which is narrated by Willem Dafoe, will have its world premiere on Saturday at Tribeca Film Festival. The Party Film Sales is handling sales.
As well as Garfein and Dafoe, the doc features Peter Bogdanovich, Irène Jacob, Bobby Soto, Dick Guttman, Blanche Baker, Patricia Bosworth, Foster Hirsch, Geoffrey Horne and Kate Rennebohm.
“The Wild One” examines how Garfein’s experience in the concentration camps shaped his vision of acting as a survival mechanism and propelled his engagement with themes of violence, power and racism in postwar America in two explosive films: “The Strange One” (1957) and “Something Wild” (1961).

Another legend has passed away due to Coronavirus. Hollywood actress-turned-author Patricia Bosworth died on Thursday after suffering from pneumonia that was brought on by Covid-19—Bosworth's stepdaughter Fia Hatsav told The New York Times on Friday. She was 86 years old. In addition to speaking to the Nyt, Fia took to Facebook to share the heartbreaking news about the beloved author. "This terrible virus has taken my Vibrant, talented, and loving Step- Mother, Patricia Bosworth," the post began. "You may read about her in all the news articles... But to us she was Patti, and Grandma Patti." "She was a humble, caring and compassionate person. She...

It’s been 40 years since 30 children and young adults were murdered in Atlanta, Georgia, sending a shock wave through what was then one of the most promising up-and-coming Southern cities. Now, the questions that have plagued the victims’ families for decades are finally being reexamined in HBO’s five-part docuseries, “Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered.”
To tell the complex and multi-layered story, the series dives deep into archival footage, legal documents, photographic evidence, and exclusive interviews to take a fresh look at what happened all those years ago — and it gives a voice to the tireless parents who have never stopped searching for the truth about their kids’ murders that they believe is still out there.
“There was something not quite right about how the case had unfolded, and how Wayne Williams had been arrested and convicted. It didn’t smell right,” filmmaker Maro Chermayeff, who made the series along with Sam Pollard,...

Actress Patricia Bosworth, who later chronicled Hollywood’s Golden Age and wrote a bestselling biography of Marlon Brando, died Thursday of coronavirus complications. She was 86. Bosworth’s death was announced by the Actors Studio, of which she was a longtime member and board member.
Bosworth acted alongside Audrey Hepburn in “The Nun’s Story” and had a second act writing bestselling celebrity bios. In addition to covering Brando’s life, Bosworth also wrote bestselling biographies about Montgomery Clift, Jane Fonda and Diane Arbus, for whom she had modeled in a Greyhound bus advertisement earlier in her career.
“Patti was more than a great writer. She was an inspiration and a pillar of support to so many wonderful people. And she was so dear to me,” her friend Ray Leslee wrote on Facebook. “She was the youngest and most vibrant 86-year-old I know. I last spoke to her on March 10th. She...

Montgomery Clift has been viewed as a tragic case since at least the publication of Patricia Bosworth’s 1978 biography, where his image became set as an innovative and very beautiful gay or bisexual actor who destroyed himself due to the external pressures of society.
But his nephew Robert Clift seeks to give a more nuanced portrait of his uncle in “Making Montgomery Clift,” a very revealing documentary that is based around a collection of audio tapes and other memorabilia kept by Robert’s father Brooks, who was Clift’s older brother. The Clift remembered here is not the doomed victim of so many mythologizing books and TV programs but a highly intelligent, mordantly funny man who successfully fought to keep his creative and sexual integrity intact.

"He wasn't anything like what people think he was." 1091 Media has unveiled the first official trailer for a documentary titled Making Montgomery Clift, a new feature from doc filmmakers Hillary Demmon and Monty's nephew Robert Clift. This premiered at a few smaller film festivals last year, but is only now getting a good VOD release next month. The doc film is a re-examination of the life of famed American actor Montgomery Clift. The classic, beloved film actor received four Oscar nominations throughout his life. But this doc seems to focus more on his private life, a "tragic story" of a "queer icon", plus other stories that may or not be true. Featuring Montgomery, along with Brooks Clift, Ethel "Sunny" Clift, Patricia Bosworth, Jack Larson, Judy Balaban, Robert Osborne, Eleanor Clift, Lorenzo James, Tucker Tooley, Mollie Gregory, Vincent Newman, Michael Easton, Woody Clift, and Eddie Clift. Looks like a compelling analysis of Monty.

Chicago – Montgomery “Monty” Clift was an enigma as a “movie star” from the minute his image reflected from the silver screen. Dark and intense, he exhibited a inner ferocity that was unmatched from any other actor of his era, including Marlon Brando. Because of the enigma, his persona has often been mischaracterized, and he died young in his mid-forties. His nephew Robert Anderson Clift seeks to revitalize the authentic Monty in the new documentary “Making Montgomery Clift.”

Essentially, before this film, Monty Clift’s life was defined by two very popular biographies that came out in the late 1970s… “Monty” by Robert Laguardia and “Montgomery Clift: A Biography” by Patricia Bosworth. The Bosworth bio has been praised as one of the must-read profiles of a major star, but both books advance the notion that Clift had one of the “slowest suicides” in Hollywood history. The Phoenix Theater’s production of “The Seagull” marked Montgomery Clift’s big return to the theater, in 1954, after a decade of making movies in Hollywood. Unfortunately, the first preview of the Chekhov classic fell flat with the audience, and Arthur Miller was called in to give notes. According to Maureen Stapleton, also in the cast, the playwright was concise. “His first note was ‘I can’t hear you,'” she recalled. “is second note was ‘I can’t hear you,’ his third note was ‘I can’t hear you.'” That quote from Patricia Bosworth’s biography “Montgomery Clift...

No matter what you might believe, acting well for the camera is no easy endeavor. The techniques involved might boggle the mind of even the most seasoned stage actor. Once you have experienced the craft for yourself, you might even forgive some of those screen stars you hate on with an undeniable passion. (Except Kristen Stewart. God, she’s atrocious.)

HollywoodNews.com: Jane Fonda‘s biographer, Patricia Bosworth, was saluted last night by Broadway producer Judy Gordon on the Upper East Side. Patti’s book, “Jane Fonda: The Public Life of a Private Woman,” is a New York Times bestseller, the latest of Bosworth’s many terrific tomes (do read her much acclaimed bios of Montgomery Clift, Diane Arbus, and of her own father, the lawyer for the Hollywood Ten).
Gordon’s A list guests included famed actor Michael Murphy, Kathryn Altman (widow of famed director Robert Altman), author Stephen Schlesinger and his legendary mom Alexandra, former French Vogue editor Joan Juliet Buck, Olympic champ and sports analyst Dick Button, writer David Black, famed director (and yes, the father) Robert Downey Sr., legendary Broadway and “Saturday Night Live” choreographer Pat Birch, producer Dennis Grimaldi, and writer-producer Maria Cooper Janis (who also happens to be the lovely daughter of Gary Cooper). At age 74, Jane Fonda still beams with a dogged courage that has fueled her cinematic, political, and entrepreneurial endeavors. Biographer Patricia Bosworth would know firsthand, having met the two-time Oscar winner during their thespian days with Lee Strasberg in New York City's Actors Studio. For four decades Bosworth has studied the shapeshifting Fonda, and when it came time in the early 2000s to write her biography, Fonda agreed to interview with the woman who had, by that time, written tomes about Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando.

Derek North Up and coming actor Derek North, through his classic looks, comes across as a cross between legendary actor Montgomery Clift (A Place in the Sun) and JFK Jr. The young actor got his start in comedy with College Debts co-starring Celeste Holm, but it's his work in the horror entertainment field, for B-movie master David DeCoteau (The Brotherhood), in such efforts as 1313: Giant Killer Bees! & 1313: Haunted Palace that is sure to get him noticed. Will he be able to prove his uniqueness, talent and distinctiveness in future films? Only time will tell on that, but part of me suspects he might just have the drive to make it in the business after taking on an ambitious effort of having already directed and produced his first short film, a bio on none other then Monty himself, simply entitled Monty. The Queen is dead. Elizabeth Taylor, who died today at the age of 79, was officially a Dame of the British Empire. She was also Hollywood royalty. That phrase is wheeled out regularly by unimaginative broadcasters every time a Hollywood octogenarian — or even nonagenarian – departs for that dressing room in the sky. But though Taylor didn’t even make it to 80, her fame and (at times) her notoriety really did transcend all boundaries. With eight husbands, two Oscars, more than 50 movies and several premature obituaries to her name, she was rarely out of the news.
Born in Hampstead, North London, to American parents, Taylor relocated to Los Angeles during World War II. She made her screen debut in 1942′s There’s One Born Every Minute, but her real breakthrough came at MGM with Lassie Come Home (1943), in which she ignored that famous maxim about never working with animals and Roddy McDowall.

Perhaps not, but it's only the start of an exciting spring season at the 92YTribeca Screening Room, which will present several special events over the next few months.

Thanks to reader Andy and just a heads up for anyone visiting NYC this spring. Bam in Brooklyn, which often houses great film series and retrospectives, is celebrating Montgomery Clift staring March 11th. They're calling it "That's Montgomery Clift, Honey!" after the Clash song "The Right Profile" a rather irreverent song about the car crash and addictions that derailed his life which you can listen to if you must...
But irreverent references, or not. They're showing 11 of the 17 pictures he made before his death at 45 and that's cause for celebration. Notably missing are Judgment at Nuremberg --probably because it's a supporting role and he was always the star -- and, strangely, two of his three pairings with Bff Elizabeth Taylor (Raintree County and Suddenly Last Summer).
If you've been reading Tfe for any length of time you know that he's my favorite actor. Find out why. And find out why...

Let’s face it. Many Hollywood biographies are cut-and-paste jobs, recycling (if not actually cribbing) material from other sources – yellowing issues of Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, vintage tabloids or previously published biographies – and retelling the same old anecdotes. Happily, The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre is no such hack job. It is one of the finest biographies of an actor ever written, on a par with Patricia Bosworth’s Montgomery Clift and Charles Winecoff’s Split Image: The Life of Anthony Perkins. However, the time it took to research and write the Lorre tome may well be unprecedented. Author Stephen D. Youngkin started working on The Lost One in the early 1970s and the book was finally published in 2005, so there are many first-hand accounts by Lorre’s friends and colleagues (most of whom have died over...

NEW YORK -- Samantha Morton is in negotiations to play Diane Arbus in a biopic of the seminal American photographer's life to be titled Fur and to be directed by Steven Shainberg. Arbus, considered one of the greatest American photographers of the 20th century, was known for creating images that were often bizarre or disturbing. She committed suicide in 1971. The project reteams Shainberg, who is an avid collector of American photography, with his Secretary screenwriter, Erin Cressida Wilson. Wilson is adapting the Fur screenplay from Patricia Bosworth's book Diane Arbus: A Biography.
