Dog Man barked plenty loud at the domestic box office over the Jan. 31-Feb. 2 weekend, where it easily topped the chart with $35 million in another resounding win for the family marketplace. Its global opening of $40.2 million means it has already recouped the money it cost DreamWorks Animation and Universal to make the Captain Underpants spinoff, excluding marketing.
In North America, it scored the second-biggest January start ever for an animated film behind DreamWorks Animation’s 2016’s Kung Fu Panda 3 ($41.28 million), not adjusted for inflation.
The movie, about a man and a cop who must share the same body after something goes horribly awry, is the first kids pic to open since Mufasa: The Lion King at Christmas and Moana 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at Thanksgiving (all these weeks later, all three films remain in the top 10 chart, which is quite a feat). Universal and Dreamworks Animation‘s Dog Man is taking a bite out of crime during its debut with $1.36M in box office previews. The beat-patrolling pooch’s silver-screen launch is on par with other Dreamworks preview earnings, including The Bad Guys ($1.15M) and Trolls Band Together ($1.3M). According to Quorum, Dog Man could be the first box office blowout of the year as families flock to theaters for the canine cop’s feature-length presentation. “Dog Man has been on the rise. Two weeks ago, it was tracking behind Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which opened to $23M. Today, awareness and unaided awareness are much higher than Paw. Could Dog reach $30M? It certainly seems possible,” said Quorum. According to other analysts, Dog Man, set in the world of Captain Underpants, could snag an impressive $40M based on the desire for family-friendly fare at the cinema.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s new movie has made $1.36 million at the box office in Thursday previews. It’s expected to make between $25 million to $30 million, though some predictions are as high as $40 million due to the demand for family fare.

A new The Lord of the Rings cosplay recreates one key moment from Fellowship of the Ring to stunning effect. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novel series, Peter Jackson released the first of his Lord of the Rings movies in 2001, introducing audiences to Frodo (Elijah Wood) as he embarks on an epic quest to destroy the One Ring. Fellowship of the Ring, like the two sequels that followed, was a major hit and was widely celebrated, with Jackson earning praise for the ways in which he brought elements of Tolkien's world to life.
Now, photographer Christina Fischer shares a cosplay that recreates one intense scene from Jackson's first Lord of the Rings movie. The photograph features two Hobbits hiding beneath the roots of a large tree as a Nazgûl lurks ominously above, a slightly altered recreation of a scene in which Frodo, Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monaghan), and...

When it comes to works of fantasy adaptation, The Lord of the Rings trilogy remains one of the most acclaimed and beloved. Peter Jackson directed all three installments, which were released in theaters between 2001 and 2003. The three movies, which serve as adaptations of the book series by author J.R.R. Tolkien, were all critically and commercially successful, and Jackson would ultimately return to the world of Middle-earth with his less successful Hobbit trilogy in the 2010s.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was the movie that started it all, introducing Elijah Wood as Frodo and kicking off his quest to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom. This installment was followed by The Two Towers, which features the climactic Battle of Helm's Deep, and finally by The Return of the King, the trilogy-capper that wraps up the stories of Lord of the Rings characters like Frodo,...

Moana 2 is unaffected by the release of Mufasa: The Lion King, another Disney movie. Although Mufasa seems to be heading for an underwhelming debut at the US box office, Dwayne Johnson’s movie has surpassed the domestic haul of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The film, however, had weaker legs than Wicked. Scroll below for more.

Light the beacons and gather your movie-going fellowship of friends: a new Lord of the Rings movie is out now in theaters! The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an anime prequel film from director Kenji Kamiyama, set 183 years before The Hobbit when the forces of Mordor were quiet and Rohan was ruled by a fearsome king named Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox). Hammerhand is a mythic figure in Tolkien's lore, and the man for whom the famed fortress of Helm's Deep, which features heavily in The Two Towers, is named.
But who was he really? And was his legend truly all his own? The War of the Rohirrim brings this story to life for the first time onscreen, expanding Helm as a character and building out the role of his daughter, Héra (Gaia Wise), who is mentioned but never even named in Tolkien's writing. Here, Héra...

We live in an era of expensive entertainment. It recently came out that Disney dropped over $269 million on its live-action "Snow White" and pumped $150 million into the animated sequel "Moana 2." Big budgets aren't a luxurious habit reserved for the House of Mouse, either. "Gladiator II" had a reported budget of nearly $310 million, and if you wander outside of the full-length movie format, Prime Video famously dropped an eye-watering $465 million on the first season of "The Rings of Power." It's a huge sum (even if co-creator Jd Payne thinks it's a bargain).
In light of all of these massive monetary infusions, one would expect any new project to have a healthy funding lifeline, especially if it's a Middle-earth IP. This includes Warner Bros.' "The Two Towers" prequel "The War of the Rohirrim." However, the new movie actually has a humble budget. According to figures reported by Variety, "War of...

You shall not pass ... unless you've watched "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim," that is. This article contains major spoilers.
The world of Middle-earth is expanding. "Rings of Power" gave us one of the biggest tragedies in the legendarium with the fall of Celebrimbor and the creation of the Nine Rings of Power, and there's also the upcoming "Hunt for Gollum" movie waiting to fill in unnecessary gaps in the story.
This is what makes "The War of the Rohirrim" so exciting. This is the first animated Middle-earth project since the 1980 Rankin/Bass "The Return of the King." The film is also technically a prequel, like "Rings of Power," but rather than serve as an explanation for a big event, filled with cameos and references, this is a standalone movie about a relatively important yet not monumental chapter in the history of Rohan. "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" charged into theaters this weekend, and its arrival heralded a callback to Peter Jackson's Middle-earth magic. Not only is the movie a direct prequel to "The Two Towers" (it tells the backstory of the fortress of Helm's Deep that plays a central role in that film), but it's also a nostalgia-fest filled with cameos, callbacks, and little hidden details for diehard Tolkien fans to spot.
One of the less hidden details is a tribute to the late, great Bernard Hill. Hill passed earlier this year at the age of 79. While known for several memorable depictions, including Captain Edward J. Smith in "Titanic," his most recognizable role was that of the aged King Théoden, who shakes off Saruman's infectious influence, overthrows the Wizard's armies, and rides to a glorious death on the fields of the Pelennor during the War of the Ring.

2025 is a promising year for animated movies. Dog Man kicks things off in January, bringing Dav Pilkeys popular comic book series to life, followed closely by The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep in February, which dives into the magical world of Geralt and adds depth to The Witcher universe. In June, Pixar brings audiences sci-fi film Elio, which introduces audiences to a young boy who finds himself mistaken for Earths ambassador to outer space. Summer continues with nostalgia and family favorites, with The Smurfs Movie returning to theaters in July, reimagining the classic blue characters, and The Bad Guys 2 in August.

The Denethor of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings novel was very different from the one in Peter Jackson's movies, and Jackson's changes sold both Denethor and Pippin short. Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy portrayed Denethor as an abusive father to Faramir, scalding in his words, tone of voice, and facial expressions. The emotional and verbal abuse he aimed at Faramir was accompanied by a downward spiral that culminated in one of fantasy's most chilling deaths. Denethor descended into despair, madness, and cowardice.
In Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King movie, Pippin swore allegiance to Denethor after the reveal of Boromir's death. As Denethor's preferred son, Boromir gave his life for the Hobbits, and Pippin's oath was made to look like a good-willing but naive kind of repayment. Fantasy books, movies, and TV shows are often spun into franchises because of the expansive worlds that the writers and creators of the series develop. While some spinoffs and sequels don't live up to previous books or screen iterations, these franchises have never disappointed me. Returning to the fantastical worlds that lie within the pages or dazzling visuals of these franchises has provided comfort, escape, and thrilling adventures at every turn. Whether it's through additional books, spinoffs, or multiple sequels, these fantasy stories have the potential to go on for a long time.
While there are some movies and fantasy TV shows that go on for too long, there are other franchises that are ever-expanding. World-building is a considerable factor in whether or not a fantasy series has the longevity to continue for many years. Of course, every audience is biased, as my favorite fictional universes that have captured my...

Chucky season 3 aired its finale at the start of May, and even though series creator Don Mancini had already pitched his idea for season 4 to the network and Chucky himself requested viewer support, we learned last week that Chucky – which aired on both Syfy and USA Network, in addition to streaming on the Peacock service – has been cancelled. Mancini has already promised that Chucky will return, whether he has his own TV show or not, and we’ve known for months that another movie is in development – but the cast of the TV show is hoping that it will still be able to continue on a different network.
Chucky cast members Brad Dourif, Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise, and Billy Boyd appeared on a panel at Terror Con in Marlborough, Massachusetts over the weekend. When the subject of the show’s cancellation came up, Fiona Dourif said (with thanks...

Less than 24 hours after Syfy and USA announced the cancellation of Chucky, cast members Brad Dourif (Chucky), Fiona Dourif (Nica), Alex Vincent (Andy), Christine Elise (Kyle), and Billy Boyd (Gigi) appeared on a panel at Terror Con in Marlborough, Ma.
When the subject of the cancellation came up, the elder Dourif deferred to his daughter (“She knows more than me!”) to share a response.
“I have been on the phone with Don [Mancini, creator of Chucky],” Fiona began. “It was a surprise that we got canceled. It was released last night. At this point, what we’re hoping to do and what should be done and would be normal for a show as successful as Chucky’s been – because the ratings were solidly good and reviewed extremely well; the numbers were great at Peacock – is that it would be marketed to other networks.”

After three acclaimed seasons on both networks, Chucky will not be returning to the USA Network or Syfy for season 4. Created and showrun by Don Mancini, the TV show served as a continuation of his Child's Play horror movie franchise, following the titular killer doll as he attempts to manipulate Zackary Arthur's Jake into becoming a killer himself. Also featuring the returns of Fiona Dourif as Nica, Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany, Christine Elise as Kyle, Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay and Billy Boyd as G.G., the show garnered rave reviews across all three seasons and was a consistent ratings hit for USA and Syfy.

While Kristin Kreuk is most well-known for portraying Lana Lang on Smallville, she’s had quite a varied career since starting acting in 2000.
Kreuk began with teen dramas and classic fairytale films, then moved to sci-fi films and procedural dramas.
No matter the role, she’s a force to be reckoned with and lights up the screen.
(James Dimmock/ Fox)
Since she began acting nearly 25 years ago, Kreuk has gone from acting project to project with little break. She’s become one of Canada’s leading leading ladies and has earned that right in the United States, too.
Kreuk will be starring in Murder in a Small Town beginning Tuesday, September 24.

Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man is heading to the big screen for his first movie, arriving in early 2025 – and here’s the first trailer.
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, written by Nicholas Stoller and directed by David Soren, is one of the funniest, most delightful animated films of recent years. It even boasts a brilliant theme song by Weird Al Yankovic. The brief clad superhero ought to have had many more big screen adventures, but it wasn’t to be, although a short lived television series is still available to watch on Netflix.
Back in 2020, we heard that author Dav Pilkey’s other hit series Dog Man was heading to the big screen courtesy of Dreamworks Animation. The series consists of 12 books, which have sold over 60 million copies.

Lord of the Rings movie actor Hugo Weaving addresses why he is reluctant to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The actor portrayed Elrond, the Elven lord of Rivendell who helped bring together the Fellowship in the first movie. He appeared in all three films. Now, Robert Aramayo takes on the role of Elrond for the Prime Video television series, exploring the character's deeds during Sauron's initial rise to power in the Second Age of Middle-earth. Season 2 is set to premiere this week, returning two years after a generally well-received first season.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy's back-to-back filming was a bold and ambitious plan that paid off with critical acclaim and box office success. This unique approach helped create a cohesive narrative and ensure timely releases, setting a trend for other franchises to follow. While studios may be hesitant to take similar risks now, The Lord of the Rings remains a standout example of successful filmmaking.
The cultural phenomenon of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy continues to stand the test of time, more than two decades since its theatrical releases, including the franchise's journey behind-the-scenes. While J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novels existed long before the live-action films and are considered among the greatest fantasy novels of all time, they had yet to receive a cinematic adaptation that did them justice. That changed with Peter Jackson's trilogy that earned critical acclaim, Academy Awards, and became box office hits.

Frank Herbert once said there is no real ending. It’s just where you stop the story. This is perhaps ironic given the author famously wrote six Dune novels without ever coming to a final satisfying conclusion to his millennia-spanning saga. But then knowing when and how to stop has always remained an elusive challenge for storytellers, even when they’re working at the height of their craft.

Russell Crowe reveals why he turned down a role in The Lord of the Rings. Serving as adaptations of the books by J.R.R. Tolkien director Peter Jackson's hit fantasy trilogy was released from 2001 to 2003, chronicling Frodo's (Elijah Wood) epic quest to destroy the One Ring. The Lord of the Rings cast is a major reason why the movies work so well, but it's become common knowledge in the decades since the films' release that various other actors were almost cast for key roles, including Crowe as Aragorn, a role that eventually went to Viggo Mortensen.

Fathom Events is re-releasing the Lord of the Rings trilogy in 4K extended editions throughout June. The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers have both landed in the domestic box office Top 10 for the weekend. The movies are performing well, though they have hardly made a dent in the box office totals of their original runs.
Two Lord of the Rings movies have landed in the domestic box office Top 10. The trilogy, which was adapted from the iconic fantasy novels of the same name by J.R.R. They were followed by a trilogy of live-action movies adapting Tokien's prequel The Hobbit between 2012 and 2014. In recent years, the Lord of the Rings franchise has picked up steam once more with the 2022 premiere of Prime Video's The Rings of Power and the upcoming 2024 animated movie The War of the Rohirrim.

Hiring lesser-known directors with unique visions can lead to unexpected success in Hollywood. Choosing a director with experience in a different genre can bring a fresh perspective to iconic franchises. Risk-taking with directorial choices has paid off in the past, resulting in critically acclaimed and profitable movies.
The studio executives of Hollywood have occasionally hired a particular director to helm a movie which, at the time, seemed like a strange choice. However, in some cases, the risk massively paid off when the movie then debuted to wild critical acclaim and box office profits. Hiring a director who has had success with movies of a similar genre is the safest approach, but a lesser-known name or someone with completely contrasting experience might still have the unique vision and narrative ideas that will make the movie an even bigger hit.
