It takes many people to fill Richard Osman’s shoes, and not just because he wears a size 14. Back in April 2021, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects. Due to the ‘stars we see in the night sky are actually hundreds of years in the past’ nature of TV broadcast, by that point, Osman was already four months out of the job. His final episode of the regular Pointless (he’ll still appear on the celebrity editions) was filmed in December 2021 and aired in July 2022, with this touching message to Alexander Armstrong.
When Pointless returned for Series 28 in September 2022, it came with a rotating clutch of new guest-hosts sitting behind Osman’s fact-checking desk. First up was Sally Lindsay, and following her were Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne,...

Tiff Stevenson chats about her new stand-up tour, Fringe, Buffy, Joss Whedon, Portlandia, Sherlock and Jason Statham....
Heading on tour around the UK this month is Tiff Stevenson. Her new stand-up show, Mad Man, is about to get underway, and she spared us some time for a chat. It got quite nerdy...
I'll start with the obvious one, and then we can go nerdy. You're going on tour with a show called Mad Man. What's it about?
It's about identity really. Who we are as people, how much of our personalities are made up of what we think we like and what we put out into the world, and how much is chewed up and sold back to us through various advertisements and social media and everything else.
Do you have specific examples you're tapping into?
Yeah, sure. Advertising is a huge thread that runs through the show.

Dara O Briain chats to us about tough gigs, writing books, touring, and comedy...
Dara O Briain's latest stand-up show, Crowd Tickler, makes it onto DVD this week, having already enjoyed a digital release. It's an excellent show, and a week or two back - just as the UK leg of his tour was drawing to a close - we got the chance to speak with the man himself about it. Here's how it went...
I caught a really good Ed Byrne gig the other week. And what impressed me about it most is that it's a long time since I've seen a comedian have to battle uphill for a good hour and a half against as dead a crowd as I've seen in a long time.
Really?
Yeah. A Tuesday night in a place you have to drive to. Not a very giving crowd.

It's been short and sweet - much like one of Mary Berry's pastries - but The Great Comic Relief Bake Off had its final heat tonight (all four Star Bakers will compete again on Comic Relief night).
We rounded things off with a good one, though, as Alexa Chung, Chris Moyles, Kayvan Novak and Victoria Wood battled it out in the tent watched by Mary, Paul and guest host Ed Byrne. Read on for the 14 funniest moments tonight...
1. Alexa's baking experience.
Er, she had none. "I keep my shoes in the oven," she said. "I literally haven't turned the oven on for three years. That is a fact." A sad, sad, sad fact. (Alexa turned out to be kind of brilliant at the baking thing, bizarrely.)
2. Kayvan's misplaced confidence.
"I've never baked before, but I imagine myself to be an excellent baker, because I do most things well so why not baking as well?...

Paul Newman’s salad dressing enterprise is common knowledge, but did you know about these 25 businesses run by Hollywood stars?
What do big-time movie stars get up to in their spare time? While their fictional counterparts might enjoy chopping wood or getting hosed down by friendly females (more on that here), actors themselves have a tendency towards wacky entrepreneurial ideas and hefty industrial investments.
Looking at our findings from some rigorous research (read: Googling), it seems that you can divide famous actors into a handful of groups – those who are trying to do something good for the world, those who are trying to break into internet megabucks and those who like opening restaurants.
Without further chit-chat, here’s a breakdown of which stars are behind which brands which you may or may not know and love…

We're feeling a little sad. The Great Sport Relief Bake Off has only just come into our lives, and now it's off again - far too fleeting for our tastes. Still, before it said goodbye, we were treated to one last slice of delicious action, courtesy of Alistair McGowan, Doon Mackichan, Helen Skelton and Rochelle Humes. And there were plenty of sweet - and sour - moments. Read on to find out our favourite bits from the episode...
The Signature Challenge - Pizza
Making enough pizza to feed a family, with whatever toppings you like. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, er, no. Paul is already talking about how his 11-year-old makes great pizza, but he is Paul Hollywood's son, so he has kind of an unfair advantage. Our celebrities do not have that kind of baking gene. Things mostly go quite well to start with, though Doon soon starts seeking reassurance about her dough.

Four celebrities have signed up to take part in the final episode of The Great Sport Relief Bake Off tonight.
Rochelle Humes, Alistair McGowan, Helen Skelton and Doon Mackichan will all be entering the famous tent in an attempt to wow Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry with their baking prowess.
The special episode will be hosted by Ed Byrne, who previously took part in the Comic Relief edition of the show.
The competition will kick off straight away as the four famous faces are asked to whip up a pizza and make some tasty Eccles cakes.
However, things will get really tough when it comes to the showstoppers, as the celebrities will have to make a tiered cake that represents sporting equipment.
The competition will come to a close as one talented celebrity will be crowned Sport Relief Star Baker.
Meanwhile, there will be more footage from Olympian Nicola Adams,...

One of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the industry, The Gold Joystick Awards is back for its 31st year, and voting is open now for the public. This time, however, things have changed a little.
Categories for games have been altered, and instead of the previous genre-specific categories, 2013's awards will feature the likes of 'Most Wanted', 'Best Indie Game' and 'Best Storytelling'. Indie title, Hotline Miami leads the pack with six nominations, meaning it could run away with the lion's share.

Ed Byrne thinks 'Mock the Week' is ''more relaxed'' than it used to be. The 41-year-old comedian - who has made more guest panellist appearances on the topical celebrity game show, which is hosted by his best friend Dara O'Briain, than anyone else - is pleased the stars on programme have chilled out because he used to feel it was a battle to get his jokes across on the series. Speaking from the set of the new Tesco Mobile ad, in which Ed stars, he said: '''Mock the Week' is more fun off-camera. On camera everyone is vying for their...

In a rather surprising development, Amazon plans to start selling fanfic. Really. The online retailer will let fanfic writers sell their Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars or Vampire Diaries-inspired stories and keep a portion of the sale. All three series are based on books brought to TV by Alloy Entertainment and Amazon says its working to get more properties into the mix. Now, anyone knows if they’ve banned crossovers? It would be fun to see how “A” and Gossip Girl would react to each other.
Andy Roddick will join Fox Sports Live, Fox Sports’ equivalent of SportsCenter, as a co-host.
Why aren’t there more hosting gigs that include moments of shirtlessness?
It’s taken nearly a year, but TLC has picked up the Bukudroos-produced celebrity genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are?. The new season will include episodes focusing on Zooey Deschanel, Chris O’Donnell and Christina Applegate.

Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that he was given "step-by-step instructions" to shoot a gay sex scene in his upcoming movie.
The Harry Potter actor, who will play poet Allen Ginsberg alongside Chronicle's Dane DeHaan in Kill Your Darlings, spoke to Graham Norton about the forthcoming film.
Radcliffe said: "I was doing a gay sex scene and the director (John Krokidas) was giving step-by-step instructions. And the favourite note I have ever had was when we were kissing and the director shouted, 'Not like that. Crazy sex kissing!'

Thought the awards season was long done? Not quite. Last night saw the 18th annual Jameson Empire Awards, presented annually by the UK film magazine, the biggest in the world, and one of the largest such ceremonies to have their winners voted for by the public. This year, there's been a big push for more recognition for the ceremony, with probably the starriest and glitziest evening in recent memory, and we were there last night to see the winners revealed. Comic Ed Byrne was on Mc duties, and it kicked off with a brace of genre awards; James Watkins' "The Woman In Black" picking up Best Horror, Ian McKellen accepting Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy for "The Hobbit," Norwegian film "Headhunters" a surprise victor in the Best Thriller category, seeing off "Skyfall," and megahit "Ted" picking up Best Comedy, with comedian Johnny Vegas delivering a hilarious, cutting 'acceptance' on behalf of Seth MacFarlane,...

The host of this year's Jameson Empire Awards has been announced and it's this man: Irish comedian Ed Byrne. The gifted stand-up will be keeping the show on the road come March 24, bringing his sharp observational skills to bear at a venue in London's West End.Stand-up comedian, Mock The Week-er, and, fact fans, keen hillwalker, Byrne will be putting that expertise - well, most of it - to good use at a suitably glitzy hotel on March 24. He's following in the footsteps of good pal Dara Ó Briain as the man charged with keeping the great and good of movieland entertained, and shouting obscenities at them should the need arise."I can't wait to host an awards show run by Empire", Byrne said, "a magazine I actually read, and sponsored by Jameson - a whiskey that I actually drink". Equally enthusiastic was Empire editor Mark Dinning, who set...

It featured at Ben Elton's We Are Most Amused Prince's Trust fundraiser, which also included appearances from stand-ups Jimmy Carr, Joan Rivers, Steven K Amos and Ed Byrne. Watch clips of the Blackadder stage routine: The skit featured some classic Edmund Blackadder lines such as "my pension pot is so big, you could boil John Prescott in it" and "life couldn't be cushier if I was a mouse astronaut who just landed on the moon and discovered that it really was made of cheese". It also featured a nod to characters from the TV series, revealing that Blackadder (more)...

Latimer Which famous person would you like to play a trick on?
"To play a trick on? Hmmm I don't know...I am not the type to just seek out one person to fool... but if I had to guess I would love to fool a magician... or at least see how long it takes them to realize somebody is messing with them.

Ed Byrne has said that modern western comedy should not be classed as "dangerous", "risky" or "brave". In a column for Metro, the stand-up contrasted the risks taken by the likes of Lenny Bruce with today's comics. Byrne said: "Whenever a comedian lands themself in hot water over an ill-advised remark or off-colour joke, the excuse that is invariably offered in place of an apology is that comedy is all about taking risks. "But there is no real risk here because, for every person that takes offence to something a comedian says, there are 50 people who will laugh and don't give a monkey's. As long as those people keep buying tickets and DVDs, what does it matter?" As well as hailing Burmese comics U Lu Zaw and U Pa Pa Lay, who served more than five (more)...

One of my favourite festivals is the tiny but perfectly formed Galway theatre festival – and this year's instalment promises to be as brilliant (and boozy) as ever
What makes for a good arts festival? Above all, it has to be distinctive. Edinburgh is obviously defined by its omnivorousness, Manchester by its air of radical experiment. And the Galway arts festival, which kicks off on 11 July, is for me marked by its high-quality selectiveness and liver-testing hospitality. Under the direction of Paul Fahy, himself trained as a visual artist, it clearly believes that nothing but the best is good enough. I've been twice in recent years and have been struck by the way everything on view is excellent, whether it's Blondie in the Festival Big Top or Ed Byrne performing in a room over a pub.
One of the big events in Galway this year is clearly going to be Cillian Murphy...

The Back To The Future trilogy, much though we love it, has an abundance of paradoxes, plot holes and remaining questions. Can you resolve any of these…?
I have to declare from the off: I love the Back To The Future films. Utterly, utterly love them. That's what left me in two minds about writing this piece, as there's genuinely nothing I'd change about them. The scripts are tight, the films are exciting, the characters brilliant. What's not to like?
But there are little plot holes and questions. And it's in the spirit of appreciation of the films, rather than being a party pooper, that I present the unanswered questions of the Back To The Future trilogy (with any answers I can scramble together). Not one of these points dampens my enjoyment of the films in any way. But they sure did get me thinking...

Comedians Simon Evans and Ed Byrne have attacked Keith Chegwin on Twitter for stealing jokes. Chegwin responded to the accusations by claiming that most of the gags were either his or so old that they could not be credited to writers. When he became a trending topic on Twitter yesterday, he blamed the controversy on "the usual bunch of jealous comics". According to Chortle, Simon Evans was one of the first comedians to complain to Chegwin after he posted a Milton Jones one-liner on Twitter. The joke he tweeted was: "My auntie Marge has been ill for so long we changed her name to 'I can’t believe she's not better'." A new feature film entitled 'Round Ireland with a Fridge', from UK based Fridge d'Or Films, has completed production. Directed by Ed Bye (After You've Gone), the film is written by Tony Hawks (Red Dwarf) - who also stars alongside Irish talent Valerie O'Connor (The Daisy Chain) and comedian Ed Byrne (The Cassidys). 'Round Ireland with a Fridge' tells the tale of a disillusioned TV personality who accepts a drunken bet that he cannot hitch-hike around the entire circumference of Ireland, accompanied by his fridge. He embarks on a bizarre, funny and at times uncomfortable journey, which opens his eyes to a more relaxed way of life, beyond the confines of his cosy London media world. Along the way, he falls in love with a feisty radio reporter, encounters a philosophical toiletries salesman and takes his fridge surfing.
