In his acceptance speech for Best Actor at the 1993 Tony Awards, he thanked "my dear, dear Susan - this is for you. And I can say, death be not proud!". In a later interview with the New York Times, Carver said he was referring to his friend, actress Susan Wright, who had died along with her parents in a fire at Carver's Stratford Ontario home in 1991.
