Met Frank Sinatra on the set of the mini-series Sinatra (1992).
Father of sons Alexander (b. 1988) and Macklin McKee Casnoff (b. November 29th 1992) with wife Roxanne Hart.
Philip starred in the 1990 Broadway production of "Shogun: the Musical", playing John Blackthorne, a role made famous by Richard Chamberlain in the acclaimed TV mini-series. At a press preview, Philip was struck by a piece of scenery during the second act, ending that performance. Fortunately, Philip's injuries were minor and he was eventually able to return to the show. Unfortunately, turning a 12-hour miniseries into a more theatrically manageable run time proved nearly impossible and the show closed after 72 performances.
Philip has appeared in a number of theater productions, mostly for musicals. His Broadway debut as a lead was in the 1988 musical "Chess". Although the music was written by ABBA's Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus with lyrics by Ulvaeus and Tim Rice, the show only ran for 68 performances. Philip received the Theater World Award for Best Actor in a Debut Performance. The cast album was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Musical Cast Show Album, losing to "Into the Woods".
Philip Casnoff's breakthrough TV role is Major Bent in the three "North and South" miniseries (Book I,1985; Book II, 1986; and Book III, 1994). Bent was the primary antagonist for the two main characters, George (James Read) and Orry (Patrick Swayze). The first two miniseries were 6 episodes each, and the third was 3 episodes. Philip, James and Lesley Ann Down were among a handful of cast to appear in all 15 episodes.
