Crazy Rich Asians” and “In The Heights” director Jon M. Chu will helm “The Great Chinese Art Heist” for Warner Bros.

The project is based on a GQ article of the same name by Alex W. Palmer. The studio is out to a screenwriter to adapt the project.

The GQ article centers on stolen Chinese antiquities from a string of museum art robberies. Oddly, the antiquities end up back in China and the article questions whether the Chinese government is behind the theft.

Chu will also produce the project with Lance Johnson via their Electric Somewhere banner. Geneva Waserman will also produce for Conde Nast Entertainment.

Exclusive: Jon M. Chu is set to direct The Great Chinese Art Heist for Warner Bros. based on the GQ article by Alex W. Palmer.

The studio is currently out to a writer who will adapt for the big screen.

Producers are Chu and Lance Johnson’s Electric Somewhere and Geneva Waserman of Conde Nast Entertainment.

The article follows a slew of museum art robberies that occurred in Europe, in which Chinese antiquities were stolen, chiefly those that came from the country’s old Summer Palace which was raided in 1860 by French soldiers. No one knows who the thieves are, but the works of art continually wind up back in China. Essentially, there’s a new generation of wealthy Chinese people who are collecting artifacts from the old Summer Palace. Is China’s government behind the art theft wave? The feature questions who gets to own art, and who gets to own history and culture.

Film Independent has selected 30 filmmakers for Project Involve 2021.

This year marks the 28th iteration of Project Involve. The free nine-month program is for writers, directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, animators, programmers and entertainment executives from diverse backgrounds. During the program, participants meet one-on-one with film industry mentors, create short films, attend master workshops taught by top film professionals and industry networking events.

“Having triumphantly navigated this past year, the Project Involve team is prepared, very pleased and extremely excited to welcome the 2021 Project Involve Fellows into the Film Independent family” said Francisco Velasquez, Associate Director, Project Involve.

Disney+ to Develop Multiple Magic Kingdom-Inspired Series With ‘For All Mankind’ Creator
“For All Mankind” creator Ronald D. Moore is developing a suite of series inspired by Disney’s Magic Kingdom for the streaming service Disney+, TheWrap has confirmed.

The first series in development, “The Society of Explorers and Adventurers,” will center on characters and worlds from Disney’s various theme parks. In the series, which Moore will write and executive produce, those worlds all exist in another reality.

According to an individual close to the project, Moore and Maril Davis and Ben McGinnis of his Tall Ship Productions banner are working with Disney’s Imagineering Team on the series, as well as its potential spinoffs. Moore will oversee the entire franchise and its shared universe.

Reps for Disney+ and 20th declined to comment.

Ronald D. Moore to Develop Magic Kingdom TV Universe at Disney Plus
Ronald D. Moore is in the process of developing multiple TV projects at Disney Plus that will be set in Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Variety has confirmed with sources.

The first such project will be “The Society of Explorers and Adventurers,” which Moore will write and executive produce. The series is loosely based on the fiction organization of the same name that is part of the Disney theme park lore. In the show, the themed lands and characters of the Disney parks and classic films all actually exist in another reality.

Moore is also said to be working with the Disney Imagineering Team on the other projects, which would amount to an interconnected universe similar to Marvel or “Star Wars” but within the world of the Disney theme parks, with Moore overseeing the franchise. Maril Davis and Ben McGinnis of Moore’s Tall Ship Productions are also involved in all the projects.

Ronald D Moore Moves From Sony to 20th Television With Multiyear Overall Deal
Outlander” and “For All Mankind” executive producer Ronald D. Moore has left his longtime home Sony Pictures Television for a multiyear overall deal at Disney’s 20th Television, an individual with knowledge of the agreement tells TheWrap.

Under the pact, Syfy’s “Battlestar Galactica” mastermind will create and develop new projects for 20th Television and Disney’s multiple platforms through his Tall Ship Productions banner, with the first being the previously announced “Swiss Family Robinson” TV series at Disney+, which he is partnering on with “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu.

Moore will continue on in his role as executive producer on both Starz’ “Outlander” and Apple TV+’s “For All Mankind,” which are Sony-produced shows.

A representative for Sony did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment on Moore’s exit.

USC Dominates DGA Student Film Awards Honoring Diverse Filmmakers
Student filmmakers from USC dominated the 26th Annual DGA Student Film Awards for African American, Asian American, Latino and women directors, which are designed to honor, encourage and bring attention to exceptional diverse directors in film schools and universities across the country. A national awards ceremony will take place virtually on Tuesday.

The DGA gives out 16 awards – eight in the West region and eight in the East – and USC students won all but two of the western regional honors. Student filmmakers from Columbia University won four of the eight eastern regional honors. Other schools whose students were honored include New York University (two awards), and with one each, the American Film Institute, Uc Berkley, the Savannah College of Art and Design, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

“Congratulations to all of the talented awardees for this year’s DGA Student Film Awards,” said DGA president Thomas Schlamme.

Chloe Zhao to head to the wild west for sci-fi Dracula film
Nomadland’ helmer Chloe Zhao has signed up to direct a western-style sci-fi reimaging of ‘Dracula’.

Teaming up with Universal Pictures on their most famous classic monster tale from Bram Stoker, Zhao will write, direct and produce through her production company, Highwayman.

Details are being kept under wraps but themes of being on society’s fringes, something Zhao has tackled in her previous work, will be the life-blood of the latest adaptation.

“Chloé’s singular lens shines a light on stories of the overlooked and misunderstood,” said Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer. “We are thrilled to be working with her as she reimagines one of the most iconic outsider characters ever created.”

As awards season approaches after a tough pandemic year, the 78th Golden Globe Awards have revealed its nominations.

Presented by Taraji. P Henson and Sarah Jessica Parker, Netflix came out clear front runners with a total of 42 nominations across its features and series including ‘Mank,’ ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7,’ ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ and ‘The Crown’.

Across the film category ‘The Father,’ ‘Mank,’ ‘Nomadland,’ ‘Promising Young Woman’ and ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’, ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,’ ‘Hamilton,’ ‘Palm Springs,’ ‘Music’ and ‘The Prom’ all received nods whilst shows such ‘Emily in Paris,’ ‘The Flight Attendant,’ ‘The Great,’ ‘Schitt’s Creek’ and ‘Ted Lasso’ ‘The Crown,’ ‘Lovecraft Country,’ ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘Ozark’ and ‘Ratched’ garnered nominations.

Jon M. Chu to take the helm of musical ‘Wicked’
‘Crazy Rich Asians’ helmer, Jon M. Chu has taken over the directors chair to follow the yellow brick road for Universal’s big-screen adaptation of the musical ‘Wicked’.

Chu takes over from Stephen Daldry who had to leave the project last October due to scheduling conflicts.

Wicked is a prequel story to the Wizard of Oz and tells the story of everything that happened before Dorothy dropped down in Oz, mainly that of Elphaba (the eventual Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch).

Sharing his delight on social media, Chu said “Most of my life I have felt out of place, weird and different. I hid behind my camera because people liked to be filmed and I could disappear.”

Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu is reportedly set to adapt the record-breaking musical Wicked into a movie for Universal Pictures. After 17 years on Broadway, Deadline is now reporting that Wicked is getting the movie treatment with Marc Platt producing under his Universal-based banner Marc Platt Productions. Exclusive: After adapting Lin Manuel-Miranda’s In the Heights for Warner Bros, Jon M. Chu has his sights set on adapting one of Broadway’s biggest hits. Sources tell Deadline that Chu will direct Universal’s Wicked, the feature-film adaptation of the record-breaking musical phenomenon that is in its 17th smash-hit year on Broadway.

The three-time Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel by book writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who are also collaborating on the screenplay adaptation. Marc Platt will produce for his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions. Wicked is produced on Broadway by Universal Stage Productions, Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Timing is everything and in this situation it worked out nicely for both parties. Last fall, Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry left the project after the studio was looking to move fast on the long-awaited adaptation.
