Thank goodness for no-shows. Had the controller of what was then BBC Choice turned up to the ‘rehearsed read’ for a potential studio sitcom in the very late 1990s and liked what they’d seen, we wouldn’t have Peep Show. As it reportedly went: BBC Two passed on it. BBC Choice didn’t see it. And everything ended happily ever after.
Peep Show creators Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain first met the show’s stars David Mitchell and Robert Webb on a BBC comedy writing project in 1998. That went nowhere, but sparked a partnership that led to the acclaimed nine-series sitcom on Channel 4. Before it led there, it almost led to “All Day Breakfast”, the rejected comedy out of which Peep Show grew.
As Robert Webb describes it in the introduction to 2008’s Peep Show: The Scripts and More, “All Day Breakfast” was about “two men in their mid-twenties,...

He’s acted with Anthony Hopkins and Laurence Oliver, had two No1 singles and fooled the nation in a spoof documentary. Ask him anything, but keep it respectful
There’s a lot more to Neil Morrissey than you might think. His first ever film role was opposite Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins and Laurence Olivier in 1984 historical mariner drama, The Bounty. He’s appeared with Martin Clunes as a fictitious former new romantic pop group in Hunting Venus and was in the film adaptation of the John Godber rubbish-rugby team drama Up ‘n’ Under. On stage, he’s tackled Robin Hood, Guy and Dolls and Oliver. And he’s had two No 1 singles, Can We Fix It and Mambo No 5, under his guise as the voice of a certain children’s TV character, Bob the Builder.

Halloween is spine-chilling in general, but especially so if you’re a parent.
The amount of calories you consume while stealing your children’s hard-won candy? Gasp. Running out of sweets when there’s a minibus worth of spooky kids at your front door? Whimper. The price of Halloween costumes they’ll grow out of by Christmas? Scream.
You’d be better off extinguishing the pumpkin, barricading the door and curling up with one of these family-friendly Halloween movies instead – from animated delights to cult classics – which all fall under the ooky-spooky rather than blood-and-guts end of the scale.

I don’t know when they filmed this extra show, which is billed as the last ever episode of Doc Martin, but it’s landed on our screens just at a time when the NHS is in a state of near collapse.
To be fair to them, the producers wouldn’t have known about the forthcoming strikes, but the fact remains that in Dr Martin Ellingham’s idyllic Cornwall patch of “Portwenn”, no one ever gets all that sick, to the point of absurdity. I’m no expert on health outcomes in the South West, but this particular corner of the region has an unusually high incidence of comically mild ailments, and somehow Covid passed it by entirely.
I do get the point of comfort viewing, and ITV has long relied on such staples as Doc Martin as a dependable tonic for any signs of weakness in the evening ratings,...

It was 2004 and Martin Clunes was ready for a change. As the star of riotous Nineties sitcom Men Behaving Badly, he was still widely regarded as the face of floppy-fringed, shirt-hanging-out lad culture. But Clunes was eager to show a different side: to prove he could do serious as well as frothy. At which point Dr Martin Ellingham, an emotionally repressed small-town Gp with a tight smile and a big heart, walked into his life. Doc Martin had entered the building.
“It was a leap,” Clunes would reflect of the character he has portrayed for the past 18 years and to whom he says farewell with a Christmas special on ITV tonight (the series proper having wrapped in October). “I need something to act, someone to act, or something to pin someone on, rather than just open a script and a nice guy says some kind of nice things.”

Beyonce once texted Meghan Markle to tell her she was “selected to break generational curses”, according to the duchess.
In the latest episode (episode 6) of the new Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal, Markle told of how the US pop star messaged her after Markle was interviewed on Oprah.
“Beyonce just texted, just checking in... I still can’t believe she knows who I am…” Markle said. “She said she wants me to feel safe and protected.
“She admires and respects my bravery and vulnerability and thinks I was selected to break generational curses that need to be healed.”
In 2021, Markle appeared for an interview with Oprah on CBS, telling the host how there were once “concerns” raised while she was pregnant regarding “how dark” Archie’s skin might be.
“In those months when I was pregnant... we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘He won’t be given security.

Martin Clunes made a subtle dig at Netflix’s Harry and Meghan documentary while appearing on Lorraine.
The actor appeared on the series on Thursday (15 December), and was interviewed by host Lorraine Kelly about the final episode of Doc Martin.
Clunes, who will make his swansong as the grumpy medic on Christmas Day, also shared his experience of travelling around the south pacific for series Martin Clunes: Islands of the Pacific.
The actor said that, while on his travels, there was no phone signal save for intermittent 3G that would let him receive messages every so often.
While filing the show in September, Clunes was shocked to discover via a message from his son that the Queen had died.
He then explained that the leader of tribes from the surrounding islands, who knew of his presence, travelled to him in order to send their condolences.

Netflix viewers have been sharing their anger after watching the streamer’s number one documentary, Crime Scene: The Texas Killing Fields.
The series looks at how, since the early 1970s, dozens of bodies have been found on a stretch of fields about 25 miles southeast of Houston. Most of these bodies belong to young women and, despite the assistance of the FBI and local authorities, the vast majority of these cases remain unsolved.
Many viewers of the show have taken to Twitter to share their outrage at the police’s failure to bring the killer – or killers – to justice.
“Watched The Texas Killing Fields that s*** was F***Ed Up How Did They Let That Happen For So Long,” posted one person.
A second wrote: “Good lord!! Who saw Texas Killing Fields on Netflix? What the f*** was that? Why was the Pd so chill? Oh man, my heart goes out to all the parents.

In 2021, the BBC made all episodes of "Fawlty Towers" available to watch on its iPlayer streaming service. Naturally, the ever-voluble John Cleese had some retrospective thoughts on his beloved sitcom, which had debuted some 46 years earlier. The first run of six episodes hit BBC Two in 1975, before a further six arrived in 1979 — all of which were a big hit for the BBC and the Monty Python alum.
Since his days spent playing the lovably misanthropic hotelier Basil Fawlty, Cleese has built a varied and impressive acting career, landing roles in everything from the '80s comedy "A Fish Called Wanda" to his stint as Q in the Pierce Brosnan Bond movies. But all these years later, his Python sketches and farcical antics in "Fawlty Towers" remain among his best-loved work. That doesn't mean there aren't things Cleese regrets about those days, though. Exclusive: AMC Networks, whose streaming past was marked by Netflix deals that helped build cornerstone shows like Breaking Bad, has been charting its streaming future with four increasingly viable direct-to-consumer streaming services.
None of the outlets is a mass-audience juggernaut, but that’s never been the plan. As a portfolio they have grown steadily and offer the company more options for how to connect with consumers, some of whom are cutting and shaving the cord. Executives tell Deadline the four services combined will have north of 2 million subscribers by the end of 2019 and are on track to achieve profitability by the end of 2020. That’s a meaningful development for a company navigating a dramatically transforming pay-tv ecosystem.
“We’ve been moving increasingly into direct-to-consumer streaming. But we see our businesses as complementary with the major streaming services and not as a replacement for them,” COO Ed Carroll told Deadline in an interview.

British crime drama Manhunt, starring Doc Martin’s Martin Clunes, has become ITV’s highest rated new drama since the launch of Broadchurch in 2013. Is it this year’s Bodyguard?
The drama, which is produced by Buffalo Pictures and written by Ed Whitmore (Silent Witness), averaged 8.7M viewers across its three episodes, according to ITV, rising to 9M when online viewing was included. Growing from an overnight average of 6M, the catch up figures mean the show has become the most watched program of 2019 so far.
To put that into context, Bodyguard, the smash hit of 2018, opened with 6.7M live viewers with the first episode adding over 3M viewers to 10.4M after on-demand and catch-up viewers were added, making it the biggest new drama launch in the UK in ten years.

There’s something comforting about the predictability of a period piece novel adaptation in the Masterpiece Theater tradition. Knowing the story, or even just the rhythms of the genre, there are rarely many surprises. The women will toss off witticisms and cry careful, pretty tears; the men will steel their jaws and declare their love, ideally after reluctantly falling for a woman they hadn’t considered before. There will be romance, heartbreak, births, deaths. Even when it’s not a great adaptation, it’s at least familiar, and that can go a long way.
“Vanity Fair” is counting on just such leniency. It’s neither terrible nor amazing, but at the very least, it’s efficient.
In seven episodes spanning years of social climbing, devastating warfare, and undulating class dynamics, this latest version of William Thackeray’s “Vanity Fair” enlists a game cast to follow Becky Sharp (Olivia Cooke), an...

He’s narrated quite a few documentaries for ITV and has become one of the more prominent actors in the UK throughout the years. As it’s been said before however it’s fairly easy to lose one actor in the shuffle if they aren’t used often enough in the public eye or if they’re a background or supporting actor that gets enough play to be recognized but still don’t mange to warrant much recognition on their own. A raft of global buyers have snapped up “Vanity Fair,” the ITV and Amazon adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s literary classic with “Ready Player One” star Olivia Cooke.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment is selling the series and gave buyers a sneak peek at a spring preview earlier this year. As MipTV opens, the distributor has closed European sales with Movistar+ in Spain, Npo in the Netherlands, Svt in Sweden, Nrk in Norway, and Yle in Finland.
“With this series Mammoth Screen and Amazon Studios are at their very best,” said Maria Kyriacou, president, ITV Studios International. “Getting a head start on MipTV by hosting our own drama festival earlier in the year has put us in a great position for a busy market this week.”
ITV Studios has also shopped the period drama to Canadian pubcaster CBC, BBC First in Australia, and Tvnz in New Zealand.

This week, British Prime Minister Theresa May received a letter from 31 of Britain’s biggest stars urging her to introduce a UK ban on animal-fur imports.
Fur farming has been illegal in the UK since 2000, but since then Britain has imported over £650 million worth of fur from countries such as China and Poland, where animals are typically bred in appalling conditions on fur farms.
The stars signed the open letter to show their support for the #FurFreeBritain campaign run by a group of prominent animal charities – Humane Society International UK, the Rspca, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Four Paws, Animal Aid, Brian May's Save Me Trust, Viva!, The Jane Goodall Institute UK, and Open Cages – and supported by social network Care2.
The following celebrities have added their names: Alesha Dixon, Alison Steadman OBE, Sir Andy Murray OBE, Bill Bailey, Chris Packham, Douglas Booth, Evanna Lynch, Fearne Cotton,...

A little bit Northern Exposure and a little bit Doc Martin, The Heart Guy (Doctor Doctor in its native Australia) is another entrant in the “talented Doctor forced to tend to small town rubes” genre. Much as it may seem that we wouldn’t need another run at such a pinpoint premise, it turns out that we may need a few more, because it apparently can’t miss.
The uniqueness to the spin here is that our Australian heart surgeon, Hugh Knight (Rodger Corser), is put on the Impaired Registrants List after his party lifestyle takes an ugly turn, and he has to serve a year as a Gp in a rural area as his punishment. The kicker is that he is assigned to his own hometown, which means he gets to see a lot of his parents and his ex-girlfriend, Charlie (Nicole de Silva), who is now married to his brother,...

Graeme Mason..
The message of Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason.s keynote address to the Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc) was simple: adapt or die..
Despite significant budget cuts, Mason said Screen Australia had tried its best so far to insulate on-screen funding by trimming costs and staff..
However this financial year will see the agency.s direct on-screen funding drop around 6 per cent across the board. Mason said Screen Australia will, as a result, have to start saying no to projects it perhaps would have backed in the past. In response, filmmakers need to consider what that means for their businesses..
.If your funding model for your project, or worse, your entire business, relies majorly on federal and state funding, then you are not coming from a position of strength, or in most cases, logic,. he said..
.We do know that times are tricky elsewhere here in Australia. The...
