CinemaCon attendees got an extended clip from Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 at Universal’s presentation Wednesday in Las Vegas.
In it, Gru (Steve Carell) teams with the villainess Poppy (Joey King) to steal a honey badger from a castle/private school. Two Minions and Gru’s baby son Junior are in tow. Calamity ensues as the honey badger awakes and creates havoc, with Gru getting hit in the butt with a tranquilizer shot.
Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).
“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.

It’s a tale as old as Bat-time: an Arkham Asylum psychologist named Harleen Quinzel is driven mad by the Joker and she becomes the insane clown’s accomplice and oft-abused paramour. More recent takes on the character, especially in the comics, have seen Harley Quinn thankfully break up with the Clown Prince of Crime and become more of an anti-hero, but the upcoming film Joker: Folie a Deux is taking a more familiar approach to this dark “love story.” Sort of.
The first trailer for Todd Phillips’ follow-up to his hit 2019 horror flick confirms not only that the highly-anticipated sequel is heavily inspired by musicals but also that Lady Gaga is playing a version of Harley with a different backstory than the one first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series and later adopted by the comics.

Is it a musical? Is it not? That's been the big question on everyone's lips about Todd Phillips' Joker sequel, known as Joker: Folie À Deux. And the first teaser trailer doesn't exactly clear it up (Phillips on stage at Tuesday's CinemaCon event said he doesn't consider a musical but that music is a key element), but it's certainly full of tune-age.
More as predicted, the new film finds Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck in Arkham Asylum, and it's there he meets Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn – here not the traditional psychologist he ends up corrupting, but a fellow inmate (and something of a fan), who forms a love connection with our hero.
Expect twisted romance, songs, performances, violence and — yes! Steve Coogan too.
Joker: Folie À Deux will be in cinemas on 4 October.

Warner Bros has released the first real look at Todd Philips’ sequel to 2019’s Joker – Joker: Folie A Deux.
When Joker released in 2019 it became one of the most talked about films of the year, not to mention one of the most commercially successful. Todd Philips’ take on the Clown Prince of Crime’s origin story featured an absorbing central performance from Joaquin Phoenix that would earn the actor an Oscar, adding another memorable cinematic interpretation of the popular character to what is becoming an increasingly long list.
Given that the first film grossed over a billion dollars at the global box office, Warner Bros was very keen to secure Philips and Phoenix for a sequel.
Enter Joker: Folie a Deux then: a film that looks to be taking some bold creative choices, much like its predecessor.

One of the most anticipated sequels and movies of this year, Joker: Folie à Deux, is coming to theaters on October 4, 2024 and after a teaser was released earlier today, the first official trailer is finally here! After much teasing, including a teaser released earlier today, the trailer is finally out and you can check it out below.
As we have reported earlier today, Warner Bros. released a short, 30-second teaser showing Arthur crying in the rain, indicating that he is not in a good place, which seems to be an exceptionally important moment in the film’s storyline. The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux has arrived.
The follow-up to 2019’s Oscar-winning Joker marks the return of Joaquin Phoenix in the role of the Clown Prince of Crime, and introduces Lady Gaga as his love interest, Harley Quinn. Todd Phillips returned to the director’s chair for the sequel, and Zazie Beetz signed on to continue playing Sophie Dummond. The newly revealed trailer also confirms that Steve Coogan has a role in the film.
While the first installment of Phillips’ take on the iconic character offered a grounded and gritty origin story in Gotham City, the sequel will be making some departures. This film is described as a jukebox musical, promising at least 15 tracks throughout the run time, including a cover of the Judy Garland standard from The Band Wagon, “That’s Entertainment!” The trailer is soundtracked by “What the World Needs Now Is Love.”

Ready to head back to the rotten, filthy, violent cesspool that is Gotham? "Joker 2," aka "Joker: Folie à Deux" is the sequel to the box office smash "Joker," which saw Joaquin Phoenix win an Oscar for his dark-n-gritty take on the Clown Prince of Crime. Director Todd Phillips drew inspiration from Martin Scorsese pics like "Taxi Driver" and "The King of Comedy" to tell a moody, violent, very R-rated take on Batman's arch nemesis. The end result broke box office records and earned both praise and scorn. Some critics were impressed with what Phillips had conjured up, while others were downright offended. Audiences, however, turned out in droves, resulting in a film that grossed over $1 billion (with a b).
While "Joker" felt like a pretty self-contained movie that didn't warrant or need a sequel, those box office returns were too good for Warner Bros. to ignore. Phoenix, for his part,...

The first "Joker" film wasn't just a box office smash, it was also the first R-rated movie ever to gross over $1 billion. It became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, beating out "Deadpool." Most Batman-adjacent films have been rated PG-13 (with the exception of the R-rated cuts of some Zack Snyder films), but director Todd Phillips gave audiences something dArK and tWiStEd — a hard-r-rated movie full of graphic violence and lots of scenes of Joaquin Phoenix smoking some cigs. With all that in mind, it was probably a safe assumption that "Joker 2," aka "Joker: Folie à Deux," would land itself an R-rating. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, as the saying goes.
Sure enough, the "Joker" sequel now has itself a rating — and it's an R. But it's the reasoning behind the R-rating that might cause some people to do a double take. According to Deadline,...

A Joker sequel was never technically in the cards. When director Todd Phillips made his anti-superhero origin film about the classic Batman villain — with Joaquin Phoenix in the title role — it was designed to be a standalone film. While Phillips acknowledged he was open to making a follow-up under the right circumstances, he went so far as to stress a month before the film’s October 2019 release: “We have no plans for a sequel … The movie’s not set up to [have] a sequel. We always pitched it as one movie,...

Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Carey Mulligan comedy “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” Variety can confirm exclusively.
They will release the film in the U.S. while Universal Pictures International is handling global distribution.
The film, which was previously titled “One For The Money,” is directed by James Griffiths (“Cuban Fury”) and produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow productions (“Philomena”).
The screenplay was written by Tom Basden (“After Life”) and Tim Key (“Great Expectations”), who also star in the film alongside Sian Clifford (“Fleabag”) and Akemnji Ndifornyen (“Famalam”).
“The Ballad of Wallis Island” tells the story of Charles (played by Key), an eccentric lottery winner who tries to reunite his favorite musical duo Mortimer-McGwyer (Mulligan and Basden) despite the fact they split up many years ago. Making things even more awkward, the musicians – Nell Mortimer and Herb McGwyer — were also once romantically involved with each other a la Sonny and Cher.

Comedian Harry Deansway’s infringement case against Steve Coogan’s production company Baby Cow is going to trial, Variety can confirm.
Numerous attempts to reach an out of court settlement collapsed and a trial date has been tentatively set for Oct. 2024.
Deansway, whose real name is Joshua Rinkoff, filed suit against Baby Cow last year in the U.K. High Court, claiming that the prodco’s head of comedy Rupert Majendie had copied the format of his YouTube show “Shambles” to develop the stand-up series “Live at the Moth Club.”
Majendie is the creator of “Live at the Moth Club,” which aired on UKTV in December 2022, and is also credited as an executive producer and director.
“It is extremely disappointing that my friend Rupert Majendie, head of comedy at Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow should have copied my original work like this without so much as courtesy call,” Deansway told Variety in a statement.

The BAFTA TV Awards nominations are out for 2024 and, while Netflix is winning headlines after strong showings for The Crown and Black Mirror, there were some snubs and surprises.
Black Mirror’s strong showing is perhaps among the eyebrow-raisers after Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series received mixed reviews and has not exactly been generating awards buzz.
The Netflix drama, now in its sixth season, garnered seven nominations for Demon 79, five of which were in the BAFTA Television Craft Awards, including best drama writer for Brooker and Bisha K. Ali.
The episode, in which a demon instructs a mild-mannered sales assistant to go on a killing spree, is up for best limited drama, while star Anjana Vasan is a surprise runner in the leading actress race.
Born in India, Vasan’s inclusion in the category marks a departure from last year, when there was controversy over the all-white leading actress nominations,...

Jackie Chan has made a lot of successful movies both in his homeland and in the international arena. With the hundreds of projects under his belt, some were not well-received by the audience. One of the action star’s most popular Hollywood films is Disney’s Around the World in 80 Days.
Around the World in 80 Days (2004)
It was helmed as a reboot of the highly acclaimed 1956 version and an adaptation of Jules Verne’s 1873 novel. Apart from Chan, the film starred Steve Coogan and Cecile de France.
Around the World in 80 Days Was A Gigantic Mess
While the title sounds really exciting, Around the World in 80 Days was a critical and commercial flop. It only earned over $72 million worldwide against a production budget of $110 million, which means it lost a profit of at least $38 million. This seems not a really large amount, but the negative reviews...

Pathé has defended its 2022 film “The Lost King” — starring Steve Coogan and produced by his company Baby Cow Productions — after legal action was launched by the one of the real-life characters it depicts.
Richard Taylor, a former deputy registrar at the U.K.’s University of Leicester, is suing Coogan, alongside his BBC Studios-owned Baby Cow, and Pathé Productions over his depiction in the feature, which chronicles the story of how the remains of British monarch King Richard III were eventually discovered in Leicester in 2012.
On Thursday, Taylor’s lawyer told London’s High Court that the character based on him (played by Lee Ingleby) was “dismissive, patronising and misogynistic” toward the historian Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins), according to the BBC.
“Ms Langley is portrayed as the gutsy underdog heroine struggling against opposition and the claimant as the arrogant villain,” wrote Taylor’s lawyer. “He not only takes steps to...

Will Ferrell and Steve Carell make unlikely, AI-assisted cameos in the Jon Hamm-narrated Super Bowl Lviii trailer for Despicable Me 4.

Steve Coogan is reprising his iconic role of Alan Partridge for new spoof documentary And Did Those Feet… Here are the details.
The BBC has announced a new Alan Partridge series, which will take the form of a spoof documentary called And Did Those Feet… With Alan Partridge. It’s once again written by Steve Coogan and brothers Neil and Rob Gibbons, with the latter also directing. The official description of the series reads as follows:
In his new documentary series – And Did Those Feet… With Alan Partridge – we follow the beloved and, to be fair, revered broadcaster as he reintegrates into life in Britain after a year working in Saudi Arabia. But what begins as a documentary about homecoming soon morphs into something more personal as Alan realises that the happiness he thought he’d feel at being back in Norwich just hasn’t materialised. The last time BBC audiences saw Alan Partridge, he was being refused entry to Broadcasting House. The suits up in their ivory offices didn’t want a truth-talking troublemaker like him around, a man of the people, for the people, near some people.
Also, he’d forgotten his security pass.
Now, it’s a new chapter for Partridge on the Beeb. Following his 2020 – 2021 stint as co-presenter on weeknight light chat magazine programme ‘This Time’, he’s back with a fresh format. And Did Those Feet… with Alan Partridge is a new BBC documentary series following the presenter’s reintegration into life in Britain after spending a year working in Saudi Arabia. Will Norwich greet its prodigal son with a fatted calf or a cold shoulder?
As a reminder, Partridge’s time at ‘This Time’ ended in June 2021 when he enacted an on-air rebellion in the style of Network’s Howard Beale.
