The boom of the MCU led many to believe that there is only one way of doing the cinematic universe right. However, it didn’t quite work out for its imitators, including the now-defunct Dceu and the Universal’s failed Monsters’ universe. On the bright side, things are looking different for the Dcu, as instead of confining itself within the bounds of an overarching narrative, which has been Marvel’s own rival, James Gunn is prioritizing writers.

This has led to many projects that wouldn’t have made sense in a more producer-driven structure being greenlit, and this hasn’t sat well with some, who are only synonymous with the MCU way.

We have some suggestions if you’re looking for a movie to watch on streaming this weekend. Our list includes a top pick that’s a current awards contender newly available for home viewing this week; two other new releases that may or may not be awards contenders; a recommendation for a similar film that would make a nice double feature with the top pick; and a notable older film worth revisiting now that it’s on Netflix — got all that? Let’s go!
Top pick: A Different Man
In an impressive upset, Sebastian Stan won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical Actor for his performance in this darkly funny psychological thriller. He plays Edward, a man who undergoes a procedure to undo a facial disfigurement and starts a new life. But when he meets Oswald (Adam Pearson), a confident man with the same condition who is thriving in...

The Best Film Ensemble category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards can occasionally be a tough one to predict. Gold Derby’s pundits erroneously thought that 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would prevail over Parasite, while 2016’s Hidden Figures was correctly chosen by only one of the editors, experts, or top 24 users — combined. Well, this year’s top race looks to be less of a head-scratcher and more of a coronation, as Gold Derby’s 2025 SAG Awards predictions overwhelmingly favor Wicked to win with 17/10 odds. Talk about popular!
The SAG nominations were announced on Jan. 8, with Wicked leading all other films with five bids: Best Ensemble, Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande), Best Supporting Actor (Jonathan Bailey), and Best Stunt Ensemble. Universal Pictures’ big-budget adaptation of the beloved Broadway stage musical is not expected to win any other trophies with the acting guild, though that’s par for the course,...

For me the year of 2024 was a challenging one. Between being in hospital or housebound at home, I could not attend any press shows or even visit my local cinemas. However, I have tried to catch up with some of the more important films of the year. I have missed many I would like to have seen, but time marches on and I have made the best of a bad situation. If it was a tough year for me, it also seems to have brought many films dealing with various difficulties to our cinema screens.
Take, for instance, Edward Berger’s Conclave. What could be more challenging than the selection of a new Pope? Ralph Fiennes in this role is torn between tradition and scandals concerning the possible candidates. Then there was Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, where a Mexican cartel leader is forced to disappear...

Having initially lied about her age to earn a shot at the auditions, Mila Kunis successfully landed the That ’70s Show gig opposite Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson, which would prove to be a breakout role for her. Although the actress has looked back fondly on her experience in the show, some aspects of the sitcom haven’t aged well.

Considering the Black Swan star’s character, Jackie Burkhart, was notable for bed-hopping, the writers made Kunis kiss almost every one of her male co-stars, excluding Topher Grace.

Close Your Eyes (Víctor Erice)
Eríce’s latest is the ultimate cinephile catnip: the triumphant return of a director known to only make masterpieces, a film filled with in-group references and nods to cinema history (including a lengthy performance of a song from a Howard Hawks film), and an ending that hinges on the literal power of cinema itself. Thankfully, these qualities are hardly gimmicks; there’s real pathos in this story of a missing director that’s aided by these loving reminders of what makes the seventh art so important to so many. Close Your Eyes commands a secular, cynical audience to remember that art was born out of religion and miracles can still happen if one believes. – Z.W. L.

A legendary actor like Denzel Washington is worthy of all the praise he deserves. Along with his skills, his accolades prove the same. However, despite having nine Academy Award nominations and two Oscar wins, he has yet to receive a single BAFTA Award nomination.

The pattern continued recently when Washington’s role in Gladiator II was not acknowledged by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in their latest nominations. This exclusion from the 2025 BAFTA Awards shortlist has sparked conversations about the possible reasons behind Washington being snubbed from the British award.

Singer and actor Omar Apollo recently made waves by posting a bold full-frontal shot from his new movie ‘Queer.’ Sharing the image online, Apollo joined the celebration for the film’s digital release on platforms like Prime Video and iTunes in the US.
‘Queer,’ directed by Luca Guadagnino, is a daring and visually striking adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel. The film stars Daniel Craig as William Lee, a fictionalized version of the author. Lee, an American expat wandering through Mexico, spends his days stumbling from bar to bar, searching for romantic and sexual encounters with men.
Apollo appears early in the film, portraying a man Lee picks up in a bar. Their brief but steamy scenes culminate in an explicit, eye-catching full-frontal moment that has caught the attention of fans and critics alike.
Later in the movie, the focus shifts to Lee’s obsession with Eugene Allerton, played by Drew Starkey.

Every single actor who's played James Bond has had a love/hate relationship with the role. For Sean Connery, landing the Bond films was a double-edged sword, as the Scottish star eventually came to feel boxed in by playing England's greatest spy, leading to him making a string of jarringly bleak films in the 1970s, including Christopher Nolan's favorite Connery film, "The Offence" in 1973. Throughout that time, Connery could be heard talking about how he "hated" James Bond, and even how he'd "like to kill him."
That sort of set a precedent, with every actor who played 007 in the ensuing years developing a similar relationship with the role. Roger Moore was never comfortable with, of all things, using guns, and after leaving the saga Pierce Brosnan claimed (via CBS) to have regretted the "stupid one-liners" and was glad to no longer be "shackled by some contracted image." Exclusive: Sony’s President of Domestic Distribution Adrian Smith is retiring after a 35-year run at the studio.
Taking over for Smith is Adam Bergerman who is being upped to President of Distribution.
Smith was named to the post in January 2013. Following the retirement of longtime Worldwide Distribution President Rory Bruer in April 2017, global duties were separated with Smith on domestic, and Steven O’Dell overseeing International.
Smith was key in the release of 1,025 films across all Sony labels, 202 of them No. 1 titles. His fingerprints are all over the successful revivals of the Bad Boys franchise, the animated Spider-Verse films, Ghostbusters, the Venom $1 billion+ series as well as the Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man movies which have minted close to $4B alone. The release of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home stands as the 7th highest grossing movie of all-time, the best ever for Sony, with $1.95 billion worldwide and $814.8M domestic.

President-elect Donald Trump has named Jon Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone as Hollywood’s “special ambassadors,” with the aim of boosting domestic production of film and TV shows as the entertainment industry increasingly opts to shoot in other countries.
“They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, Back—Bigger, Better, And Stronger Than Ever Before!” Trump wrote on Thursday in a Truth Social post. “These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!”

The Dcu hasn't taken shape as quickly as some fans would have liked, though 2023's Hollywood strikes did little to help with that. Superman, however, is post-production and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has just started shooting in the UK.
Peacemaker season 2 also hits Max later this year and cameras are expected to roll on Lanterns any month now.
So, there's lots to look forward to and, according to insider Daniel Richtman, the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow script is "so good" that DC Studios boss James Gunn is eager to get writer Ana Nogueira involved in multiple Dcu projects.
As you may recall, she was attached to write the Supergirl movie meant to spin out of the events of The Flash, with Sahsa Calle tapped to star. That project was scrapped but she's clearly been impressing DC executives for a while now.

Image Source: Amazon Daniel Craig began his 15-year, five-film run as James Bond in the 2006 movie Casino Royale. It became one of the most critically acclaimed 007 films since the franchise began in the ’60s. When Casino Royale hit theaters, it was clear that the producers — along with the change in their lead actor — were also trying to change the dynamic of the Bond films, particularly in the way the female characters were presented. When we spoke to Craig about it at the time of the film’s release, he told us it was refreshing to see the changes and the new, more substantial “Bond girl” in the movie. How did Daniel Craig miss at BAFTA? Is A Complete Unknown coming on like a freight train? Gold Derby experts and editors Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng break down the 2025 BAFTA Awards nominations on Awards Magnet.
A week after scoring a surprise Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Actor for Queer, Craig was even more surprisingly Awol from BAFTA’s nominations list that has an extra sixth spot. Hugh Grant (Heretic) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) made it in alongside the predicted Oscar top four of Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave). How could the erstwhile Bond be excluded on home turf? That was always a possibility since Heretic is a greater box office success, and said home turf enormously liked The Apprentice, which converted three of its longlist mentions into nominations. Queer? Craig was its sole longlist showing.

The 2025 BAFTA nominations had its share of snubs and surprises, some less so than others (Denzel Washington missing again is just par for the course now). The final televised precursor — and an industry one to boot — made the acting categories even messier while ostensibly taking other contenders out of the running. Here’s where we’re at with all four races post-bafta nominations.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) surprised everyone with its 2025 film nominations by giving more attention to smaller independent films instead of big Hollywood movies.
“Kneecap,” a low-budget Irish-language film about a rap group from Belfast, received six nominations, making it a strong candidate. The film earned spots in key categories, including original screenplay, outstanding British film, and films not in the English language.
The Hollywood musical “Wicked” received mixed results in the nominations. Although the film earned five technical nominations and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received acting nominations, it missed the best film award. The French musical “Emilia Pérez” was chosen, highlighting that BAFTA viewers prefer European works.

Denzel Washington, despite his incredible career and accolades, still hasn’t received a single BAFTA nomination. Washington, who stars in Gladiator II, is a 10-time Oscar nominee and two-time winner. He’s currently the joint-second favorite for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, but BAFTA has once again passed him by.
The BAFTA Film Awards nominations for 2025 were revealed today, and several major films missed out. Notably, there was no recognition for Queer, Challengers, Babygirl, or Paddington In Peru. The musical Wicked was also absent from the Best Film and Best Director categories.
Both Queer and Challengers, directed by Luca Guadagnino, had been in the running after receiving Golden Globe nominations. The leads, Daniel Craig and Zendaya, were also recognized by the Golden Globes, but neither film made it past the BAFTA longlist.
Nicole Kidman, who won Best Actress at Venice and was Golden Globe-nominated for her role in Babygirl, didn’t impress the BAFTA voters.

Most of the expected Oscar contenders also landed predicted bids with British Academy of Film and Television Arts voters (the complete list of nominees is here). However, the BAFTA Awards snubs and surprises were slightly scooped by the BAFTA Awards themselves. Earlier this month, the BAFTA Awards revealed this year’s longlists in each category, with Netflix’s Emilia Pérez and Focus Features’ Conclave pacing the field with, respectively, 15 and 14 longlist mentions. Other contenders that performed well on the longlists included The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, and The Substance. These Bafta nominations have given us the traditional buffet of snubs for industry observers to frown at. Nothing at all for Luca Guadagnino’s tremendous drama Queer – its exuberant leading turn from Daniel Craig passed over. Nothing for the very moving Irish film Small Things Like These and so no Bafta nod for Cillian Murphy’s outstanding (arguably career-best) performance there. The appetite for Yorgos Lanthimos films starring Emma Stone seems to be maxed out. Nothing for their film Kinds of Kindness.
But one much-feared possible exclusion thankfully did not materialise: Marianne Jean-Baptiste has a best actress nomination for her superb performance in Mike Leigh’s blistering study of depression, Hard Truths, though no director nomination for Leigh himself.

Ireland’s Oscar entry “Kneecap,” which is on the Academy shortlist, made a strong showing with six nominations. Same with “A Complete Unknown.” “Nosferatu” and “The Substance,” meanwhile, both earned five nominations.

Despite making the BAFTA Film Awards longlist, Daniel Craig was notably missing when the final nominees were unveiled Wednesday.
The Queer star was not recognized among his peers Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Hugh Grant (Heretic), Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Colman Domingo for prison drama Sing Sing, Timothée Chalamet for Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, and Sebastian Stan for his portrayal of Donald Trump in The Apprentice, who all made the shortlist.
Craig was nominated for Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and SAG awards, though has been what many would call snubbed by the British Academy in his native U.K. He was part of The Hollywood Reporter‘s actor roundtable last month.
Beloved by Brits for his iconic role in the James Bond franchise, Craig took on the lead part in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer. He played William Lee, an American expat in his mid-50s leading a solitary existence in Mexico City.

“Conclave” leads the pack of 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominees with 12 nods, one more than “Emilia Pérez,” which had appeared on the most BAFTA longlists (15) when they were announced on Jan. 3.

The British academy nominated “Conclave” for best film, outstanding British film, best director (for Edward Berger), lead actor (Ralph Fiennes), supporting actress (Isabella Rossellini), and adapted screenplay (Peter Straughan). “Emilia Pérez” picked up nods for best film, director (Jacques Audiard), lead actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), supporting actress (Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña) and adapted screenplay (Audiard).
“The Brutalist,” meanwhile, received nine nominations, including best film, director (Brady Corbet) and actor (Adrien Brody), followed by seven each for “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked.” Of those three, only “Anora” made the cut for best film and director (Sean Baker). The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in – here’s a look at the snubs and the snub-ies.
With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.
It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.
Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

“Conclave” and “Emilia Pérez” lead this year’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations, heading up a diverse mix of talent and titles in a competition where, for the first time in years, there’s no clear favorite in any of the major categories.
“The Brutalist,” “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two” “Wicked” and “A Complete Unknown” are also very much in contention, while the likes of Demi Moore (“The Substance”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Jeremy Strong (“The Apprentice”), Ariana Grande (“Wicked”), Selena Gomez (“Emilia Pérez”), Mikey Madison (“Anora”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), Yura Borisov (“Anora”), Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”), Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”) and Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”) are among the 12 of 24 nominated performers — both established and rising — getting their very first BAFTA nod.

On Wednesday, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominees, with expected contenders Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez nominated for Best Film.
Conclave led all films with 12 nominations, including bids for Best Film, Best British Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, and Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini. It’s the second time BAFTA voters have widely embraced a Berger feature in three years after giving All Quiet on the Western Front 14 nominations in 2023.
In second, just behind the nominations leader, was Emilia Pérez. Netflix’s top contender landed 11 BAFTA Award nominations, including Best Film, Best Film Not in English Language, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, Best Actress for Karla Sofia Gascón, and Best Supporting Actress for Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.

Unlike last year, there isn’t a clear favorite to win the Best Actor category at the 97th Academy Awards, making it a healthy and interesting competition. There were some incredible performances that were duly appreciated in cinemas this year. When the Academy announces its list of nominees on January 17, 2025, five out of these nine actors will probably make it to the final selection.

Over two decades ago, a young actor by the name of Adrien Brody shocked fans and critics across the world with his impeccable portrayal of the celebrated musician Władysław Szpilman in The Pianist (2002). Brody won the Academy Award for Best Actor for that role, becoming the youngest actor (at 29) to achieve this honor.

Actor Harrison Ford has been pretty picky about his roles over the years, carefully choosing roles that suit his cocky charm, but he hasn't always made perfect choices. While the actor has dozens of truly great movies under his belt, he also has a few stinkers, like historical submarine thriller "K-19: The Widowmaker" and utopia-building drama "The Mosquito Coast," though Ford has rather thoroughly defended both. There's one box office bomb that he hasn't been as effusive about, however, in large part because he was admittedly never on the film's wavelength.

Luca Guadagnino released two films in 2024, and coming off the energetic “Challengers” was the more introspective “Queer.” The filmmaker’s latest stars Daniel Craig as William Lee, a fictionalized stand-in for author William S. Burroughs, whose slender novel the movie is based on.
The movie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and later played the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. A24 acquired the domestic distribution rights to the movie, with Mubi releasing the movie internationally.
But how can you watch Guadagnino’s latest? Read on to find out.
Is “Queer” streaming?
After being released in theaters last November and December, “Queer” is now finally available to rent on Digital. The film will eventually be streaming on Max due to an output deal between the streamer and A24, but a streaming release date has not yet been revealed. “Queer” will also be released on Blu-ray in April.

When the best James Bond movie ever made, "Casino Royale," debuted in 2006, it introduced audiences to a new, rugged, and much more grounded version of the famous spy. Gone were the elaborate Q gadgets and impossible-to-escape death traps. In fact, Q as a character was removed from the films entirely. All these Bond trademarks would find their way back into the franchise with 2012's "Skyfall" — still the biggest Bond movie ever, despite not being very good — but for "Casino Royale," they were eschewed in favor of a cinematic realism that rendered Bond's origin in suitably gritty terms.
But by the time Daniel Craig's tenure as Bond ended, much of that tasteful restraint had been abandoned — a fact never more obvious than when Eon Productions and director Cary Fukunaga decided to have Craig's formerly grounded spy killed off by an entire cluster of missiles at the end of "No Time to Die.

The immense scrutiny and vitriol faced by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry after their marriage is no secret from any person. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have gone through unhealthy levels of harassment and hatred from the racist UK public. The media criticizes and questions every breath the power couple takes, thus making things deliberately harder for them.
Prince Harry’s former girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, reportedly broke up with him after witnessing the same scrutiny and how Kate Middleton had to live as a member of the royal family. A royal expert has revealed inside details about this, and here’s everything we know about it.
Did Prince Harry’s Ex Breakup With Him Because Of Kate Middleton & Media Scrutiny?
Prince Harry and Cressida Bonas met through his cousin Princess Eugenie and had a relationship for about two years.

Did Christopher Nolan crash a Boeing 747? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Instead of tinkering with CGI or scaling down to toy planes, Christopher Nolan went full throttle and crashed a real Boeing 747. Because apparently, blowing up a 230-ton jet is just another Tuesday in Nolan-world.
Turns out, buying and wrecking a plane was actually cheaper than faking it. Nolan broke it down, explaining, “We started to run the numbers… It became apparent that it would actually be more efficient to buy a real plane of the real size and perform this sequence for real.”
A place in California had planes lying around (as one does), so Christopher pulled the ultimate “add to cart” move. Cue Scott Fisher (special effects guru) and Nathan Crowley (production design wizard), who figured out how to make a plane-smashing scene work in real life. The result? A hangar-shaking spectacle that even Nolan called “a very exciting thing to be a part of.

Did Emilia Clarke have some major Game of Thrones jitters? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
At just 23, Emilia Clarke landed the role that’d make her a global sensation. But she had no idea what she was up for.
“I took the job and then they sent me the scripts and I was reading them, and I was like, ‘Oh, there’s the catch!'” Clarke alluded on the Armchair Expert podcast. The catch? A lot of on-screen nudity.
Still, Emilia tried to power through. “If it’s in the script, then it’s clearly needed,” she reasoned, trying to keep it professional. But once she was on set, reality hit hard. There she was—completely naked, surrounded by strangers, and absolutely lost. “I’d been on a film set twice before then, and I’m now on a film set completely naked with all of these people,” she admitted.
