Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous fictional characters for book readers and, most recently, entertainment lovers, with a sprinkle of movies and TV shows constantly popping up every couple of years. Holmes is a socially awkward but intelligent detective in Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels written between 1887 and 1915. Over the years, several celebrities have played Holmes, from Benedict Cumberbatch and Henry Cavill to Johnny Lee Miller and Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. All these adaptations, while similar, have unique differences that make watching them a new experience despite knowing what to expect. These different takes of the

Sherlock Movie ft Benedict Cumberbatch. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
The last episode of BBC’s Sherlock aired in 2017. The detective series is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. The British detective series stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat created the series.
When Sherlock ended with season 4, fans demanded the makers give them a fifth season. It will be seven years, and the hope for another season is only diminishing. However, the show’s co-creator, Mark Gatiss (who also plays Mycroft Holmes), revealed that he is interested in bringing the story to the big screen. Instead of a series, he would like to take the story further with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in a movie. But there’s an issue—read to know what.

More and more pop culture figures are slipping into the public domain, allowing anyone to reinterpret beloved characters. In 2022, Winnie-The-Pooh entered the public domain, and our cherished childhood friend was made into a vicious slasher villain at the center of a humorless bloodbath of a film, "Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey." Meanwhile, Disney has so far managed to successfully prevent Mickey Mouse from entering the public domain despite the copyright partially expiring, while Superman and other iconic superheroes move closer and closer to becoming public IP.
In the case of another prominent pop culture figure, Sherlock Holmes, many of the stories featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective entered the public domain some time ago. Copyright typically lasts for the duration of an author's life plus 70 years, 120 years from the date of their creation, or 95 years from their publication date — whichever comes soonest. Benedict Cumberbatch has played many iconic characters in his career. Be it his breakthrough role of playing Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock or voicing Smaug in The Hobbit franchise, Cumberbatch has brought his absolute best to each role. He has been playing the role of Doctor Strange in the MCU since 2016 and has been featured as the character in multiple films.
However, the Sorcerer Supreme was not the first role that he was offered in the Marvel franchise. While Strange met the Asgardian brothers Thor and Loki in Thor: Ragnarok, Cumberbatch would have met them even earlier had he accepted the initial part offered to him by the studio. However, he chose to wait it out instead.

Gilded Newport Mysteries, a crime fiction film set in 1895, the age of Victorian elitism, the birth of bureaucratic espionage, suffocating corsets, and the rise of the women’s suffrage movement. Despite being a murder mystery, Gilded Newport Mysteries makes me wonder about how little has changed over the years. Though on the surface it seems the world has changed for the better, closeted chauvinists still run the world. Emma, an intellectual woman in an era where such traits were discouraged in women, finds herself frequently sidelined from crucial decision-making. This exclusion highlights the pervasive influence of gender bias, a theme also seen in the film Enola Holmes. The references to Arthur Conan Doyle within the story further highlight this connection.

The novel The Woman in Black recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Released in Fall of 1983, The Woman in Black has become a much loved and much reimagined story. During its history it has been adapted into a TV movie, Hollywood film – with sequel, radio play and theatre production – which was the 2nd longest run of any play in London’s history. The apparition of The Woman in Black has taken many impressive shapes. What’s more impressive is that: the author, Susan Hill had never had a ghost story published prior to this one; the theatre adaptation was penned by a soap opera writer; and the first performance took place in a canteen - possibly a pub - in the northern coastal town of Scarborough (which is some 20 miles away from Dracula’s Whitby).

Who is Dr. John Watson without Sherlock Holmes? CBS aims to find out as they have given a straight-to-series order to Watson, a drama series starring Morris Chestnut as the title character.
Set one year after the death of Sherlock Holmes at the hands of Moriarty, Watson will see “Dr. John Watson resume his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Mark Gatiss’ revival of A Ghost Story for Christmas, a British strand of one-off specials infrequently aired around the holidays since 1971, continues with what is possibly its best entry yet: Lot No. 249. The League of Gentlemen alum has maintained a substantial interest in horror, much like comrades Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, but unlike the Inside No. 9 duo, Gatiss digs up neglected works from classic British literature — before now, namely M. R. James — and reintroduces them to contemporary audiences.
In Lot No. 249, Kit Harrington plays the prying university student who acts on suspicions about his odd neighbor (Freddie Fox). The Egyptologist in question is not only guilty of certain “perversions” he is also using a reanimated mummy — the story’s otherwise nameless namesake — to carry out his wicked plans. This includes murdering his various rivals on campus. The protagonist later intervenes, only to then make a startling, if not belated realization about his enemy.

Warning: contains spoilers for “A Ghost Story for Christmas: Lot No. 249”
Christmas and ghosts go together like mince pies and brandy butter, or indeed like Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss and Sherlock Holmes. This year’s A Ghost Story For Christmas brings us a bit of both.
Based on a short story by Arthur Conan Doyle, Lot No. 249 sees medical student Smith (Kit Harrington) called to help fellow student Bellingham (Freddie Fox) after he falls into some sort of a trance. Bellingham is a specialist in Egyptology and possesses many ancient artifacts including a mummified body. Strange things have been occurring on campus, some of them to people who have crossed Bellingham – could the desiccated corpse have anything to do with it? Well, yes, obviously.
While scary resurrected mummies are standard horror fare these days, back when Doyle was writing, Egyptomania was all the rage and the concept of the undead...

Millie Bobby Brown’s latest star turn for Netflix is Damsel, a fantasy action adventure that arrives in just a few months.
Thanks to Netflix now choosing to release viewing hours for all of its film and TV programming, we now know that between January and June of this year, the YA take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s collection of detective tales, Enola Holmes 2, racked up over 30m hours worth of viewing. That places the film somewhere in Netflix’s top 600, but doesn’t account for the initial (and presumably huge) viewership spike when the film first launched (since it released in November of 2022).

BBC Arts has unveiled two new shows exploring the rich legacy of author Arthur Conan Doyle and his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes.
Doyle came to hate Holmes and killed him off in print only to be forced to revive him upon public demand. In documentary series “Killing Sherlock: Lucy Worsley on the Case of Conan Doyle” (3 x 60′), historian Lucy Worsley investigates the love-hate relationship in a parallel biography of Holmes and the man who created him.
The series follows in the footsteps of “Agatha Christie: Lucy Worsley on the Mystery Queen,” with Worsley unearthing Holmes’ origins in Doyle’s early life as a medical student, unpicking his early stories and revealing the dark underbelly of late Victorian Britain – from drug use to true crime. She explores Doyle’s growing disenchantment with his detective creation and desire to distance himself from Holmes and investigates the darkness of his later stories,...

Aside from shounen, horror, and mech-oriented sci-fi elements, the mainstream anime scene is heavily populated with ventures revolving around the detective mystery genre. For the 90s kids, fond memories of the Detective Conan series still linger at the back of their minds, and the title itself is indicative enough of the influence Sherlock Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had on the series. As we went through the recently released anime adaptation of Akira Amano’s Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deduction, the influence was felt even more strongly, and without spoiling the future plotline, it can be said that readers who are familiar with the manga must know that the influence goes far beyond the narrative style and plot structure. Revolving around an unlikely duo of detectives, the series adds a particular supernatural spin to conventional investigations, which will remind the viewers of Naoki Urasawa’s masterpiece, Monster.

This article contains spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher.
To say there’s a lot going on in The Fall of the House of Usher is to put it lightly. This Netflix title is…
– The latest (and likely final) spooky Netflix series from horror maestro Mike Flanagan before he moves on to his new overall deal at Amazon.
– A deeply angry allegory about the human wreckage wrought from the opioid crisis.
– An adaption of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
– An Easter egg and reference bonanza of the rest of the Gothic literature titan’s classic works.
While all of those elements are of equal importance, it’s the Poe aspects that really shine through. Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher may just be the most effusive love letter to America’s spooky uncle that has ever been penned.

For more than a hundred years, the face of the ancient Egyptian mummy has been synonymous with horror, dread, and the ever reliable go-to Halloween costume. This can probably be traced to almost exactly a century ago when Howard Carter, Lord Carnarvon, and the latter’s daughter, Lady Evelyn, crossed the hitherto unbroken seal of King Tutankhamun’s tomb on Nov. 26, 1922.
Until that moment, the boy pharaoh had largely been forgotten by history. Yet as fate would have it, he left behind the only pharaonic tomb ever discovered mostly intact in the modern age. It was the greatest archaeological find of all time and should have been cause for lifelong celebration… but less than six months later Lord Carnarvon was dead. Technically, he died of blood poisoning, but as far as the British press (and soon the whole world) was concerned, the Curse of the Pharaohs got him! As other...

After the lackluster reception of Inferno, the second entry in his supernaturally inclined Three Mothers trilogy, Dario Argento pivoted back to the giallo genre that he’d helped put on the world-cinema map with the release of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage back in 1970. Not content to merely “return to form,” and plagued by some personal demons of his own, Argento unleashed the supreme meta-giallo Tenebrae, an endlessly reflexive murder mystery about the solving of murder mysteries.
The notion that Tenebrae is primarily concerned with the conditions of its own making is signaled straight away. The first thing we see is a copy of a book also called Tenebrae. A voiceover narrator declaims a passage that describes murder as a liberating, creative act. What’s more, the scene introduces two of the most elemental bits of giallo iconography: the black gloves worn by the killer and a shiny cutthroat razor.

In broad strokes, NBC’s The Irrational follows the well-worn and well-loved formula of “offbeat detective has a particular gift that just makes him better at detecting than everyone else,” which has powered mysteries since at least the days of Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. True, Alec (Jesse L. Martin) isn’t technically a detective — he’s a college professor who frequently consults for the FBI, where his ex-wife, Marisa (Maahra Hill), happens to work. But this is a series built around his unique brilliance, which ostensibly allows him to pick up on the irregularities everyone else seems to miss.
The show’s vibe is easy and familiar, and in its own way comforting — in the three episodes sent to critics, justice comes as reliably as the turning of the hour. Yet despite a likable lead turn by Martin, it’s difficult not to notice how un-special this story...

In an era when many superhero films have adapted an unflattering, desaturated visual style in the name of realism, "Aquaman" is a balm for the eyes. The James Wan-directed DC Comics flick is full of eye-popping colors and imagery reminiscent of the splash pages you find in actual comic books. There are also nods aplenty to classic sci-fi and adventure stories, from the globe-trotting tomb-raiding of the Indiana Jones films to the fantastical prehistoric setting of Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World." So it should come as no surprise that Wan has taken a similar approach to crafting a unique look for his sequel, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."
Speaking at a reveal event for the "Lost Kingdom" trailer attended by /Film's own Jenna Busch-Henderson, Wan talked about the importance of world-building to the "Aquaman" films. "We enjoy all the different worlds that really no superhero movies go into,...

The post-9/11 world was rough on "Star Trek." The not-super-popular "Star Trek: Enterprise" debuted on September 26, 2001, and the world wasn't in the mood. The U.S. president at the time, George W. Bush, began to affect violent, revenge-forward rhetoric, and many U.S. citizens were in a bitter, wounded mindset. While some may say that the utopian future of "Trek" was needed at that time, one can see how its idealism felt out of place. "Star Trek" would have us reaching out to our enemies and solving problems through diplomacy. That suggested course of action didn't sit well with a nation itching to enact justice. It's no wonder films like "The Avengers" took off in the post-9/11 milieu; the Avengers avenge the destruction of our cities. Diplomacy was out, freelance super-powered military mercs were in.
So when "Enterprise" was canceled in 2005 after four seasons, it seemed that "Star Trek" was at an end.
