Margot Robbie was almost cast in American Horror Story: Asylum? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Back in 2012, Margot Robbie auditioned for American Horror Story: Asylum, the season packed with all things creepy and Emmy-worthy. But despite delivering an audition that made jaws drop, she didn’t land the role.
Casting director Eric Dawson spilled the beans on Backstage’s In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast, calling Robbie’s audition one of his “favorites of all time.” He said, “She was such a star. It was crazy, her star appeal when she walked in the room. Even though she didn’t get that role, you just knew—this is a star. What do we do with her?”
At that point, Margot was fresh off the short-lived Pan Am (2011–2012), where she played a 1960s stewardess—sadly, the show didn’t take off, but Robbie’s ambition was about to. With a fearless mindset,...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the TV show The Handmaid's Tale.Emily, the quietly defiant Handmaid brought to life by Alexis Bledel in The Handmaid's Tale TV series, is a character who resonates deeply with audiences. Unlike her book counterpart, the nameless Ofglen, the show granted her a distinct identity, making her a pivotal figure in the resistance. Her journey, marked by both resilience and heartbreak, culminated in a seemingly triumphant escape to Canada.
However, Emily's sudden disappearance in season 5 left a gaping hole in the narrative. While the show hints at her return to Gilead to continue the fight, this sudden departure feels unsatisfying for a character who has endured so much. The series is one of the biggest TV shows returning to screens in 2025 and expectations are high. Now The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 holds the potential to rectify this by providing Emily with a more fulfilling conclusion,...

Winter, often perceived as the bleakest season with its barren landscape, year-end melancholy, and unresolved struggles, has also been eulogized for its introspective beauty. Austrian poet Rilke, writing to a woman devastated by her husband’s desertion, described winter as a time to nurture one’s inner garden—tending to the mind and spirit after a period of endurance. Albert Camus echoed this sentiment: “In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” Similarly, films like The Holiday depict this growth, framing heartbreak and recovery against the cozy charm of swapped holiday lodgings, emphasizing renewal and comfort over sorrow.
Here are ten films like “The Holiday” that somewhat capture the same spirit:
10. Serendipity (2001)
That winter, and by extension, Christmas, is supposed to be interspersed with miracles is retold through “Serendipity.” One element in particular echoes throughout the film: the appeal of fate and destiny.

Poker Face is prepping for a big return in 2025, so here's a quick reminder of how this quirky Peacock mystery series unfolded in season 1.
Created by Riann Johnson, Poker Face is basically a love letter to the TV mystery movies of the 1970s. The pilot introduced us to Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), a Vegas card shark with a sardonic attitude. She's enlisted by Sterling Frost Jr (Adrian Brody), son of a powerful mobster and casino boss who wants to use Charlie in a classic setup of being a "ringer" for a rich guy and bilk him in a card game.
Charlie, you see, has a unique talent. For reasons she can't explain, she's a living lie detector. Somehow, some way, she always knows when someone is lying and will call them on it. That's a boon for a card player and why she was banned from playing before Sterling Jr.

It’s not uncommon to see the same actor playing several different roles at the same time, especially on TV shows.
Shawn Hatosy has a role on Rescue: Hi-Surf but is also a recurring face on Chicago Pd. Both roles portray Hatosy as an entitled white male in charge who’s not afraid to bend the rules to get his way.
It’s not the first time Hatosy has taken on roles that depict him negatively. He’s one of those actors who is great at playing a jerky bad guy. However, he also has numerous memorable characteristics as an okay guy.
(Lori Allen/NBC)
Hatosy fans from the ’90s might remember him from his early days when he took on awkward teen roles to expand his filmography.
He had several small supporting roles, racking up time with big names like Brittany Murphy (Double Jeopardy) and James Russo (No Way Home...

Without Christmas movies and TV, the holiday season would feel lacking, not just for movie buffs, but for everyone who celebrates the unwritten custom of getting together and watching something Christmas-themed the night before completes other traditions. While some people have a ritual of revisiting their favorite Christmas film every year, others look forward to Christmas movies releasing as recently as 2024. From romcoms like Meet Me Next Christmas, to horror films like Terrifier 3, Christmas has become the setting for all genres of cinema.
A common fixture of the Christmas film is everyone's favorite bearded man who flies in with his reindeer every year. Without Santa Claus, it would not entirely feel like Christmas. Well, not entirely. While there have been slasher movies with Santa in them, and the occasional movies with moral messages being spread by Santa, many films just use the premise of Christmas to tell stories that...

Christmas movies are a thing on their own. They tend to be heartwarming dramedies akin to slice-of-life movies that make us emotional but also offer us a sense of warmth and comfort. Centred around the year-end festival, these movies often speak about the spirit of togetherness and are drenched in a cosy, celebratory spirit of the festival. From Frank Capra’s ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ to Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers’, we have seen the festival bringing people together, literally or emotionally. Tyler Taormina’s ‘Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point’ is the latest, charming addition to this list that uses its big ensemble to offer a time capsule to a a bygone era.
While Christmas is a cause for celebration, it may not be the same for everyone everywhere. Some may cherish getting together and sharing the same space with their families. For some, it can be pitch-perfect like...

It is almost fitting that George Huang’s Weekend in Taipei comes out nearly 30 years after his razor-sharp and ruthless black comedy, Swimming with the Sharks. You just have to wonder what took his son so long to make another movie. That biting, back-stabbing comedy still holds up and showcases the talents of a filmmaker who can embed comedy within any genre.
I mention this because Weekend in Taipei is a comedy wrapped in an action film. This doesn’t mean the movie’s tone is uneven or unsure of itself—far from it. While Huang’s script occasionally stumbles into a few tropes, like Luc Besson’s mysterious character arc or a Parent Trap-esque subplot, the experience is refreshing, super cool, funny, and ultimately one hell of a ride.

Sarah Michelle Gellar will likely always be known as an icon of genre work and supernatural teen dramas, but she's given great performances besides her star-making role in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. While fans of Buffy will always see Gellar as the heroine of the beloved TV show, before, during, and after Buffy was on the air, Gellar lent her talents to plenty of projects of multiple genres. However, some of the best have leaned into her skills in horror, as she's an expert at blending comedy into serious and violent moments, which always elevates a scary movie.
Being able to communicate the nuances of horror and drama by incorporating tongue-in-cheek and self-aware elements into her performance is one of the actress' best skills, as seen in Buffy. However, Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn't want a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot, but that doesn't mean the actress hasn't been open about her love of the show.

Stories of young love have always captured the attention of moviegoers and the 1990s and 2000s saw a lot of teen romance movies add to the genre. While not every teen movie from this time period aged well, many of them remain watch-worthy for more than just nostalgia. Whether it is the beautifully executed tropes of friends-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers, miscommunications, nerds and jocks falling in love, or just some classic teen coming-of-age stories, these remain absolute classics.
Teen romance movies can be comedic high school adventures or dramas that tug at the heartstrings, but they always seem to play out like a modern fairy tale. It's not every day that a teenage outsider learns they're actually royalty or becomes embedded with the most popular kids in school, but teen rom-coms find a way to make the audience believe it. When the Veep cast reunited Sunday night, the audience who tuned in to the live table read event was warned, “No dogs or cats were eaten during the making of this program.”
The message — a dig at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump (a similar one came the night prior on Saturday Night Live‘s political opener) — was delivered in voiceover by Gary Cole, who played Kent Davidson, senior strategist to star Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer, who served as both the 45th and 47th president of the HBO’s show version of the United States.
The next introduction came from Matt Walsh, who played Meyer’s press secretary, Mike McLintock. “Many people assume that Kamala Harris is Selina Meyer,” he said in character, stumbling through the speech. “Im here to say she 100 percent is…not. Kamala Harris is not Selina Meyer and Selina Meyer is not Kamala Harris. Selina Meyer is,...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is willing to admit her Veep character bears some similarities to a real-life presidential nominee.
Amid the show’s election year resurgence, the Golden Globe winner reasoned that her morally bankrupt politician character Selina Meyer is more like Donald Trump than his opponent Kamala Harris.
“In Veep, I play a very unhappy vice president, and at a certain point in a run of the show, I have the opportunity to run for president,” she explained on MSNBC.
“Now, I do want to say one thing about the character I play on Veep. I do want to say I play a very, shall we say, almost narcissistic, sociopathic, mega-maniacal type of person,” added Louis-Dreyfus. “I am not a Kamala Harris type. I am possibly much more like someone from the other party whose name I shall not even utter.”

Veep‘s election fundraiser reunion has booked some special guests.
Joining the cast and writers of HBO’s iconic political comedy for a live table read event on Sunday are Veep creator Armando Iannucci, along with Larry David, Jason Alexander and Kevin Smith.
“We’re so thrilled to have Armando, the creator of Veep, joining us,” Veep‘s showrunner David Mandel tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And I am so excited to have my old boss Larry David along with Jason Alexander. It’s kind of like a mini-Seinfeld reunion stuffed inside a Veep reunion. Like a turducken.”
Of the filmmaker of such classic franchises as Jay and Silent Bob and Mallrats, Mandel adds, “Kevin Smith is the biggest Veep fan I know and his movies have always been as wonderfully foul as Veep, so it’s a perfect combination to have him as part of our table read!”

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
This September, we’re celebrating Back to School Night with four midnight movies that aren’t just academically themed but also teach the lessons essential to understanding this school of cinema.
First, read the spoiler-free bait — a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film and why we think it’s worth memorializing. After you’ve watched the movie, come back for the bite — a breakdown of all the spoiler-y moments you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.
The Bait: This Whole “Midnight Movie” Thing? It’s a Trap
Robert Rodriguez made his name on the candy-colored “Spy Kids” and the graphic novel-inspired “Sin City,” but you can see the director’s fingerprints (thumb-thumb-prints?) all over his earlier teen horror-comedy “The Faculty.”

Back in 2014, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Veep character Selina Meyer became the first female U.S. president by way of the sitting president not seeking reelection. When President Joe Biden announced he was dropping his 2024 re-election bid and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee, Veep started to see a resurgence both in Max viewership and on social media. “I always thought the only alien in this high school was me.”
In 1985, John Hughes set a template for high school archetypes in his classic film The Breakfast Club. The brain, the athlete, the basket case, the princess and the criminal became part of our collective consciousness while expanding ideas of adolescent identity. But 13 years later, these stereotypical roles had begun to feel stifling. While reassuring to know that each identity is valid, the tendency to define your life by an external ideal could keep young adults from overcoming the fear of being themselves. In 1998, Robert Rodriguez applied a sci-fi lens to these classic archetypes in The Faculty, a teen horror film that explores the terror of conformity. A high school faculty taken over by monsters becomes the backdrop for a nuanced dissection of stereotypical expectations and discontent adolescence in a treacherous high school environment built to dehumanize.

Amy Adams has been in development with Nightbitch for quite a while, but you can now get a first look at the new surreal film now that a trailer has recently released from Searchlight Pictures. The film has been written and directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Nightbitch is based on a novel by Rachel Yoder. The film will tell the story of “a suburban mom thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler. As she embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a dog.”
Adams plays that possibly canine housewife. Scoot McNairy (Monsters) is also in the cast, playing her “oft-traveling husband,” while Mary Holland, who is best known for appearing in the Netflix release Senior Year and for co-writing and co-starring in Clea DuVall’s romantic comedy Happiest Season,...

Bill Pullman is a versatile actor, known for his likable and earnest performances in a wide range of genres. Pullman shines in roles like Peter Kirk in The Grudge, showing his talent for portraying complex characters in horror. Pullman's standout performances, such as President Whitmore in Independence Day, have solidified his status as a Hollywood actor.
Bill Pullman has had a film career that's taken him from romantic comedies to science fiction action blockbusters, classic Westerns to Japanese horror, and everything in between. Pullman has had an impressive career on stage and on television, but it's his movie roles that have made him a household name for over three decades. Though his movie performances have never been nominated for a major acting award, he's still managed to carve out a space for himself in Hollywood as an actor who can appear in any kind of movie.

Love Lies Bleeding features a top-notch cast led by Kristen Stewart. The crime thriller's plot follows a romance between a reclusive gym manager and a bodybuilder, culminating in a wild and violent climax. With engaging performances from Stewart and Katy O'Brian and an intense narrative, Love Lies Bleeding is a must-watch film.
Directed and co-written by Rose Glass, Love Lies Bleeding boasts a truly top-notch cast. In Kristen Stewart's action thriller with 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, the Oscar-nominated actor plays Lou, a reclusive gym manager living in New Mexico. Set in 1989, Love Lies Bleeding straddles several genres. At its core, the film is a neo-noir crime thriller, but it's also a romance with dark comedy elements. However, Love Lies Bleeding's plot is straight-forward enough: a rising bodybuilder, Jackie (Katy O'Brian), drifts into town on her way to a potentially star-making competition in Las Vegas.

The critically acclaimed series, which follows Charlie Cale (Lyonne), a casino worker with an extraordinary ability to detect lies, as she solves crimes across America, garnered significant praise for its first season. Natasha Lyonne is back in the driver’s seat as her Peacock procedural Poker Face begins production on Season 2.
Rian Johnson celebrated the the first day of filming the sophomore season on Monday, sharing a photo of the show’s clapboard, which listed Lyonne as the director for episode two.
“Day one season two,” wrote Johnson on his Instagram Story.
Inspired by the inverted detective format of Columbo and similarly described by Johnson as a “howcatchem” (as opposed to the “whodunit” structure of Knives Out and Glass Onion), Poker Face follows Vegas casino worker and human bullshit detector Charlie Cale (Lyonne) as she runs from the mob while solving a string of murders along the way.
The star-studded series has featured such guest stars as Adrien Brody, Ron Perlman, Chloë Sevigny, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Stephanie Hsu, Clea DuVall, Dascha Polanco, Hong Chau, Megan Suri, Danielle Macdonald, Judith Light, Ellen Barkin, Tim Meadows,...

Before you dart toward the comments to argue that George Huang’s How to Make a Monster isn’t a remake, let me explain why it’s my focus this month.
In 2001, legendary special effects artist Stan Winston co-produced a series of made-for-cable “remakes” alongside Colleen Camp and Lou Arkoff based on Aip horror flicks of the 1950s. They were all monster films based on Samuel Z. Arkoff properties (Lou’s father) under the banner “Creature Features.” Winston developed these films for Cinemax and HBO, where they’d haunt late-night rotations. He even turned his “Creature Features” villains into a toy line, although sales were underwhelming because the figures released out of synch with each premiere.
I used quotations around “remakes” above because 2001’s How to Make a Monster is a remake by title only. Herbert L. Strock’s 1958 original is about a makeup effects artist who uses his secret foundation recipe to control actors.

The 1998 graduating class of Huntington Hillside High School is finally getting together for their 25th reunion… and it’s a musical!
On Saturday, Can’t Hardly Wait co-writer/director Deborah Kaplan announced a stage musical in the works based on her and Harry Elfont‘s 1998 cult classic teen movie, which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ethan Embry, Lauren Ambrose, Peter Facinelli, Seth Green and Charlie Korsmo.
She shared the title art and tagged the official Instagram profile for Can’t Hardly Wait: The Musical, writing in the caption, “And that’s all I’m able to say @canthardlywaitthemusical #comingsoon.”

One conversation around “Hit Man,” our movie contender to watch this week, is mostly about how it should have gotten a legitimate theatrical release and not been a streamer play for Netflix, where its impact will likely be lessened. It’s supposed to be a star turn for Glen Powell, and the type of charisma-driven indie-ish romantic comedy/thriller that people say they wish there were more of in theaters.
But what about the movie itself? Well, it’s a darkly funny based-on-a-true-story charmer, with Powell playing a mild-mannered man who has a gig posing as a hitman to entrap people in murder-for-hire plots for the police. But things get complicated when he falls in love with a “client” (Adria Arjona) who hires him to off her abusive husband. Powell is a long-shot contender for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay (with director Richard Linklater), but even if this ends...

Exclusive: Summer Qamp, a documentary following a group of LGBTQ+ youth at an idyllic lakeside camp in Alberta, Canada, is potentially getting a very interesting spinoff.
Clea DuVall is in talks to turn the doc into a musical, a rare move for a piece of non-fiction.
DuVall, who directed hit LGBTQ+ romantic comedy Happiest Season starring Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis, which broke records for Hulu, has said that the doc is “funny, touching and powerful” and “will make you wish you were a teen again so you could go to this camp”. Duvall’s wife Mia Weier is one of the exec producers of the documentary.
DuVall is collaborating on the musical adaptation with Steve Robillard, who was part of the Summer Qamp documentary team.
The news comes after Peacock acquired the U.S. rights to the documentary, which will launch on June 7.
