It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

The pun-packed, Arnie-starring original that strayed wildly from Stephen King’s book is one trashy 80s sci-fi romp that could actually benefit from a remake
Why bother remaking much-loved 80s and 90s science fiction movies? Frankly it never ends well. Len Wiseman’s 2012 reworking of Total Recall, with a baffled-looking Colin Farrell taking over from Arnold Schwarzenegger as the amnesiac dreamer of futuristic secret agent dreams, struggled to capture the bombast of the superbly trashy Paul Verhoeven original, and never even made it to mutant-heavy Mars. The maverick Dutch director’s 1987 version of RoboCop is a gloriously effective corporate satire masquerading as an all-guns-blazing actioner, but its 2014 remake from José Padilha (despite a stellar cast) seemed to smooth off all those rough, wonderfully stop-motion fuelled sci-fi edges and somehow lose something in the process.
How, then, should we greet the news that another of Arnie’s nutty sci-fi romps, 1987’s The Running Man,...

What happens when Sugar meets Dr. Vickers?
The mysterious Dr. Vickers Ruby is working under seems like a gentleman who just checks on Sugar’s health. His personality is oddly similar to that of Gus Fring from Breaking Bad, as he, too, looked harmless at the outset. It has been a lucky 13 years since Tom Hiddleston first played Loki, the God of Mischief in the film “Thor.” He returned to the role recently for season two of the TV series “Loki.” This Disney+ show provided a beautiful end (we’ll see) to the character’s epic arc.
The sophomore outing of the series seee Loki trying to save the universe with the help of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Mobius (Owen Wilson), and Ouroboros (Ke Huy Quan). Kang (Jonathan Majors) is once again at the center of the trouble. The series is fantastical and is held together by the superb performance of Hiddleston. Once again, this classically trained actor brings Shakespearean authority to the role. He is also able to infuse increasing vulnerability to the former villain, making Loki one of the best characters in MCU history. Critics agree, “Loki” is the Tom Hiddleston show.

“Outwardly, he gives the impression that he doesn’t care very much,” Gary Oldman recently said about portraying a disgraced MI5 agent on the acclaimed AppleTV+ spy drama “Slow Horses,” explaining that underneath his disheveled exterior, there’s so much more to the man than what meets the eye. “He’s unkempt, and he uses it to play a game. It’s a defense mechanism, and I would say he cares a lot more than most.”
Oldman is mesmerizing in “Slow Horses” as the aloof and often contemptuous Jackson Lamb. He’s a pariah living out his twilight days as the begrudging leader of a group of fellow outcasts to whom he is almost comically obnoxious and offensive. He is truly captivating every time he’s on screen. So, a brilliant performance deserves a brilliant Emmy campaign. Ben Affleck was ready with his Batman script and it was only a matter of time before he’d get to star in his solo film. Unfortunately, fate had some other plans. What he produced forth was a film that would go on to receive three nominations at the Academy Awards.

[Editor’s note: The following includes spoilers for “Sugar.”]
“Sugar” is a neo-noir television series set in modern-day Los Angeles, featuring private investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell) who, in addition to being very good at his job, is also a huge movie buff. Sugar’s latest case, to find the missing granddaughter of legendary movie producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), only sends him even further down the path of Hollywood lore.
Throughout the eight episodes of Season 1, Sugar’s journey to find Olivia reminds him of scenes from some of his favorite classic films, which are intercut into the series as if we are seeing little flashes of what is racing through Sugar’s mind.
“It was all done after the fact, so I had no idea until I saw it how many [and] which clips [they used],” Farrell told IndieWire, adding he was pleasantly surprised to see himself juxtaposed with some of his all-time favorite films, like “Sunset Boulevard” and “The Maltese Falcon.

Will “Fallout” come out on top? Will Emmy voters support “The Sympathizer”? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss this week’s two new titles looking to crash into the drama and limited categories.
Based on the video game of the same name, “Fallout” is set in a post-apocalyptic world and stars Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins and Aaron Moten. Will it be as successful at the Emmys as last year’s post-apocalyptic series based on a video game, “The Last of Us”? Unlike the HBO drama, which follows the video game storyline, “Fallout” features an original story, putting gamers and non-gamers on equal footing. With a wide-open drama field, the Amazon Prime Video series can definitely land a spot in the series lineup, provided it’s a hit with viewers as expected, but could it go all the way and win?

The new Apple TV+ series “Sugar” isn’t shy about announcing its influences: It’s steeped in the traditions of film noir.
Creator Mark Protosevich leaned into the tropes of detective stories by Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett when creating private investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell), who himself is obsessed with classic Hollywood film noirs. Director Fernando Meirelles (“City of God”) and editor Fernando Stutz went so far as to edit in clips from those classic films, drawing parallels between Sugar’s investigation into the disappearance of Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler) to Humphrey Bogart’s spin as Phillip Marlowe in “The Big Sleep.”
“I wanted a character who carried themselves in a classic style, that this is a person who doesn’t necessarily seem from this time,” Protosevich told IndieWire. He wondered how out of place the noble heroes of classic ’30s and ’40s Hollywood movies would feel in modern...

One of the most distinct characteristics of the new Apple TV+ series “Sugar” is the way it cuts scenes from classic Hollywood films into its present day story of detective John Sugar (Colin Farrell). While the technique is novel, if not experimental, the connections being made are clear: Sugar is a cinephile obsessed with old Hollywood movies, while creator Mark Protosevich’s neo-noir series is steeped in the tropes of these 1940s and 50s black and white films.
The connections are so strong, and the intercutting works so well, the real surprise is that the cinephile Protosevich didn’t script them.
“It was all done after the fact, so I had no idea until I saw it how many [and] which clips [they used],” Farrell told IndieWire, adding he was pleasantly surprised to see himself juxtaposed with some of his all-time favorite films, like “Sunset Boulevard.” “It’s a really fun alignment for me,...

The 1973 folk horror movie "The Wicker Man" is a terrifying trip into the potential dangers of religious fanaticism, but it was also pretty perilous to film as well. Some of the actors felt like making the movie was almost as horrifying as the movie itself due to miserable, wet Scotland weather and the film's dramatic climax that ends in human sacrifice. Actor Edward Woodward wasn't actually burned alive, of course, though his character, Sergeant Howie is trapped inside a massive wicker man effigy and lit aflame, and it was still pretty scary filming that scene because fire can be unpredictable. Perhaps even more unpredictable, however? Goats. There may be no creature on this earth more unpredictable, and in proper goat fashion, one of them was a real problem on the set of the most pivotal scene in "The Wicker Man."

John is taking a swim in the hotel’s pool while collecting his thoughts and working through what he’s learned about Olivia. He stares at the moon (something we’ve noticed he frequently does) while confessing he knows he’s good at what he does.
A short while later, he meets with Bernie Siegel (Dennis Boutsikaris), Olivia’s dad. Bernie’s a movie producer, just like his father (John’s current employer), but definitely not in his father’s class. Colin Farrell stars in ‘Sugar’ (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)
Apple TV+’s Sugar kicks off with a neo-noir vibe, gorgeous black-and-white and backed by a classic detective film-inspired track. But don’t settle in and expect the eight-episode season to remain true to that opening noir nod in every scene. With Oscar nominee Colin Farrell leading the way, the series takes viewers on a roller coaster ride through various genres (while remaining true to the hard-boiled detective aesthetic) as the titular character unravels clues in his search for a missing woman.
Created by Mark Protosevich, Sugar refuses to be stuffed into a specific genre box, subverting expectations and teasing twists. Whatever expectations you have for Sugar based on its first two episodes, Protosevich has something entirely different in store.
Farrell’s lead character delivers voice-over exposition throughout, and his engaging performance as a gumshoe with a love of Hollywood and classic films draws you in.

Patricia Highsmith’s thrilling novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” has been adapted for the screen multiple times since its publication in 1955, most notably in the 1999 film of the same name starring Matt Damon and Jude Law. But now the story of a con man taking over the life of the wealthy playboy he’s been sent to bring home is being given the limited series treatment, and it’s must-see TV.
Initially developed for Showtime by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, the eight-episode “Ripley” has moved to Netflix, where the highly bingeable but tense series is able to be devoured all at once, just as it should be. Inspired by the golden era of film noir, this stylish contemporary drama stars Colin Farrell as private detective John Sugar, who has a secret so unexpected, the revelation will make you spit-take your bourbon. “Sugar is a fascinating collision of impulses. He can be chivalrous and kind and emotionally open but also violent and intense and impenetrable,” says Sugar executive producer Simon Kinberg. “There’s a naive way he looks at the darkest corners of our world, and that perspective is linked to the show’s big question of who Sugar is and what he’s hiding.” Farrell says he was initially drawn to the role because Sugar wasn’t bitter like most film noir gumshoes. “John Sugar has this optimism, this belief that human beings are fundamentally good, which a very questionable belief when we see the world that we live in,” the actor says. “Every case he works on has personal meaning.

It’s become a catchphrase these days to compare TV to cinema.
Showrunners, stars, and producers often say their work is a long-form movie, as if being on TV is still somewhat taboo despite the soaring success of the medium.
Whether it’s big action, adventurous character arcs, or unbelievable cinematography, some people still find it hard to believe TV encompasses what once made film so unique.
Film stars and directors have flocked to the small screen to take advantage of the generosity of storytelling available, to see characters come to life with every human nuance available.
Experimentation exists on screens, both small and large, but on TV, you can make a different show every week or grow from one genre to another within the same season.

It took Gary Oldman some time to win his first Oscar, which he claimed for “Darkest Hour” in 2018, and it is taking him even longer to win his first Emmy. The legendary British actor was first nominated 23 years ago for his guest role on “Friends.”He should be reaping a second Emmy bid for his leading role in the Apple TV+ drama “Slow Horses.” The acclaimed series, based on Mick Herron‘s book, follows a group of British intelligence agents who are confined to a dumping ground of a department due to their past mistakes.
Oldman stars at the head of the department, Jackson Lamb who is rude, abrasive, full of bad habits, and, a lot of the time, drunk. As the character, Oldman is a joy to watch as the crass and broken spy. But while he revels in the comedy of said crassness, Oldman sows in an undercurrent of intelligence and belied sharpness,...
