From the kitchen to corruption, The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White is now being eyed for The Seven Five, a movie based on the 2014 documentary of the same name to be directed by Ben Stiller.
While the role that White is apparently circling for The Seven Five has yet to be revealed, it was reported back in 2020 that the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were linked to play Michael Dowd, who was considered the “ringleader” of a net of corruption that ran through the New York City police department in the 1980s. One could assume that neither of these casting decisions worked out or that White could be in talks for the role of Patrick Eugene McKenna, another key player in the NYPD.
Regardless of Jeremy Allen White’s role at this time, this isn’t the first attempt to get the documentary turned into a narrative. An...

The roster of directors aboard the DC universe projects being overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran is growing. According to Deadline, I, Tonya/Cruella director Craig Gillespie is now nailing down the finer points of a deal to direct Supergirl.
While it has yet to be officially confirmed – these days, that often tends to be via James Gunn on social media, and at time of writing he hasn't mentioned it – Gillespie is surely a good shout to handle the movie, which will star House Of The Dragon's Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin. We're promised a harder-edged Kara than in the recent TV series; this take on the character was raised on a barren rock chipped from the destroyed Krypton, who sees everyone around her die before reaching Earth.

Say what you will about superhero fatigue in recent months, but there's no denying that James Gunn is assembling quite a list of talent for his new DC Universe. Even though he's right in the middle of filming for "Superman", that hasn't stopped him and co-ceo Peter Safran from looking to the future for another superhero movie coming down the pipeline. After news broke earlier this year that "House of the Dragon" star Millie Alcock would be suiting up as Superman's superpowered cousin, the upcoming "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" film now has its director. That's maybe not the order of hiring we'd usually expect to see, but welcome to franchise filmmaking, folks!

DC looks to have found its Supergirl director in Craig Gillespie, the man behind the camera for films like Cruella, I, Tonya, and GameStop stock drama Dumb Money. In Deadline’s exclusive report, the outlet says DC plans to shoot the female-led adventure in Q4 after completing work on James Gunn’s Superman film. House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock stars in the highly-anticipated feature as Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) for the story based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Last year, Gunn remarked that when it comes to Supergirl, “we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and...

It’s up, up and away for director Craig Gillespie, who is in talks to helm Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The filmmaker joins James Gunn (Superman) and Andy Muschietti (the Batman feature The Brave and the Bold) among the filmmakers building out the slate of projects for DC Studios, the Warner Bros. division led by Gunn and Peter Safran.
With Gillespie, DC gains a tried and true helmer known for putting a grounded yet stylish spin on projects such as Disney’s Cruella, the skating drama I, Tonya and TV’s Pam & Tommy. He was last in theaters with the GameStop movie Dumb Money.
Supergirl stars House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock, who will play Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. The feature is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic and will depart from the earnest take on the character audiences may know from the CW Supergirl series.

Paul Dano is one of the most respected and talented actors in recent times. While many know him through his work as Edward Nashton in The Batman, he has been proving himself as an actor long before he even uttered a riddle. He has worked with big actors like Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Daniel Day-Lewis, as well as directors like Craig Gillespie, Denis Villeneuve, and Steven Spielberg.
Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe in a still from Swiss Army Man
Having had such as successful career and worked with so many legends, it is safe to say that Dano knows what he is talking about. This is why it is extremely interesting to find out his theory on why superhero films, regardless of Marvel or DC, have been failing, and why The Batman worked. It would seem that in his eyes, the Robert Pattinson film was an exception.

The Sundance Film Festival on Sunday night hosted the world premiere of Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man starring Sebastian Stan, Adam Pearson and The Worst Person in the World breakout Renate Reinsve in her first American film.
Stan toplines the A24 release as an aspiring actor, Edward, who undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But a new face turns into a nightmare when it causes him to lose a dream role he was born to play when the playwright/object of his affections, Reinsve, replaces him with someone who looks nearly identical to his former self, Pearson, a man with a disfigured face.
As for Pearson, he lives with neurofibromatosis (type 1), a rare genetic condition that causes excess body tissue to grow predominantly on his face. The condition fuels the plot of A Different Man and the actor, Pearson, actually inspired the film after having...

The final countdown is on. The BAFTA nominations are in, which means all the precursors are accounted for – aside from the delayed Writers Guild Awards. One of the last major Oscar players made its digital debut the same day that voting ended. Will that put the movie at the top of Academy members’ minds?
The contender to watch this week: “The Color Purple“
One of the lingering questions ahead of next week’s Oscar nominations is how “The Color Purple” will fare. The newest adaptation of Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer-winning novel has been up and down throughout precursor season, but its two SAG Award nods — particularly the venerated ensemble prize — could hint at a decent haul. The surest bet is newly BAFTA-recognized Danielle Brooks, reprising her barn-burning role from the Broadway production. Otherwise, the movie could show up in Best Costume Design, Best Original Score (it is a musical after all), Best Production Design,...

A key music choice can really make a movie scene sing, for lack of a better word — whether it be a surprising needle drop, a song to underscore a character’s motivation or even a opening credit track that sets the tone of a film.

“I like the stock.”
If only the world of high finance could accept things as simply as that.
As we learned in 2021, the so-called masters of the universe had written off GameStop, the venerable supply of used video games and assorted tech gear. The only one, it seemed, who still believed in them was Keith Gill, who live-blogged as Roaring Kitty. With incredible transparency, he shared his spreadsheets and showed his faith by buying up shares, which encouraged others to follow suit.
The run-up of the stock, fueled by the disruptor app Robinhood, spooked Wall Street and led to at least one capitol group crumbling with hubris.

As T.E. Lawrence exclaims in "Lawrence of Arabia": "Big things have small beginnings." That axiom holds generally true of most things in life, of course, yet it curiously applies to a great number of films released in 2023.
Over the last decade and change, we've been privy to many "big things" in American cinema; such trends as the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its brethren have ensured that world-ending stakes (or larger) became the order of the day on screen, and such stakes were allowed to rise given their films' not-so-humble beginnings (for example: Tony Stark in "Iron Man" begins as a billionaire playboy military weapons manufacturer).
While there has never been a complete end to a more modest style of storytelling focused on average, everyday characters, the prevalence of the superhero film and the need for Hollywood to get butts in seats as screens dwindle meant that...

I've interviewed a lot of people this year for /Film, but none better reflected the energy of the film they wrote than Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the screenwriters of "Dumb Money." Their enthusiasm and rapid-fire speech patterns, in which they frequently were so excited that they'd finish each other's sentences, was infectious to listen to, and it perfectly aligned with the way their script (and director Craig Gillespie and his editors) unspooled the chaos of the GameStop stock story for the big screen. It also indicated a deep level of comfort these two have with each other as co-workers: Through collaborating together for over ten years, first as investigative journalists and then as screenwriters, they've formed the type of mind-meld that sounds familiar if you've ever read about how the Coen Brothers make decisions on set. There's a shorthand on display, and they each possess the same exact...

Exclusive: It’s no secret that the independent film game is not for the faint-hearted, with the last decade seeing a number of companies and financiers collapse under the weight of the industry’s constant state of flux. But amidst the turmoil and unprecedented change, Teddy Schwarzman has been quietly building his Black Bear label into a full-fledged independent film studio.
The company, which Schwarzman founded as a financing and production outfit back in 2011, has now grown into a business that has tentacles in international sales; theatrical distribution in Canada (Elevation Pictures) and, more recently, the UK (Black Bear UK); a management business; a documentary financing joint venture with New Regency dubbed Double Agent; and a television strand, the latter of which recently deficit-financed AMC’s crime drama Monsieur Spade starring Clive Owen.

Ben Affleck directs this corporate tale that goes behind the scenes of Nike’s partnership with Michael Jordan, in which the shoe company placed a massive bet on the then-rookie basketball player to create the now-ubiquitous Air Jordan shoe line. Matt Damon plays Sonny Vaccaro, the Nike exec who attempts to woo the up-and-coming athlete into signing a major deal, while Viola Davis delivers a meaty supporting performance as Jordan’s mother, Deloris Jordan.
All of Us Strangers

Andrew Haigh’s metaphysical drama, adapted from Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel Strangers, stars Andrew Scott as a London screenwriter who begins a relationship with a mysterious neighbor played by Paul Mescal. Struggling to write a film inspired by his deceased parents, he is drawn back to his childhood home — only to discover his mother and father (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) living as if they had not died in a car accident 30 years earlier.

One of Hollywood’s most venerated auteurs has a new movie out this weekend. Will awards season pay attention? That’s the question facing most of these films, which tackle tough topics like Alzheimer’s, the stock market, and gay twincest.
The contender to watch this week: “The Killer”
David Fincher‘s latest has divided critics, with The New York Times‘ Manohla Dargis calling it “boring” and NPR’s Justin Chang declaring it “perfectly paced.” But if you think about it, a lot of Fincher’s work has proved at least mildly polarizing. He often overcomes those divides by the time Oscar nominations are announced, yet “The Killer” might be too cold and grim even for a Fincher flick. Michael Fassbender, at his most effortlessly slick, plays a nameless hitman suffering the consequences of a rare botched job. Fassbender’s fine-tuned performance is complemented by deft editing and another banger...

The Craig Gillespie directorial venture Dumb Money is a prime example of how a movie about characters involved in technical stuff should be made. Based on the book The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich, the 2023 film is the story of a few retail investors who began to buy stocks of a video game store called GameStop and how that impacted the billion-dollar hedge fund managers who made their money primarily through ‘short selling’. The performances are great, and the pacing, the cinematography, and the overall setting surely remind one of David Fincher’s The Social Network. Funny that this film is based on a book with almost the same name! The casting is spot on, and with a great background score, the movie creates an atmosphere where this big fish vs. little fish fight really becomes palpable, even though the jargon might go over our heads.

Unlike other Disney remakes, which start out in animation before transitioning to live-action, Tim Burton decided to remake his oddball live-action short film (one of his “after school projects” that kept him busy while animating for Disney) in the form of a feature-length stop-motion animated film. Talk about a curveball! One of his most emotionally resonant and overlooked films,...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a look at Kid Cudi's No One Believes Me, directed by Craig Gillespie. The films of Craig Gillespie, whose new film Dumb Money recently released in cinemas, can be best described as pop art confections of class struggle. The idea of the haves and have nots battling it out has been ever present in his work, even if it presents as light and fluffy at first glance. Why did Tonya Harding in I, Tonya do what she did? What makes Cruella DeVille tick, if not for being one of the have nots, trying to make it big? The American Dream (or in the...
