In the era of true crime in media, social media is abuzz following the release of Baby Reindeer on Netflix.
The series created by Richard Gadd is based on a true story based on Gadd’s own experiences. This has led internet sleuths to take into their own hands and uncover who the real-life characters could be, leading to wrongfully accusing innocent people.
Gadd is now breaking his silence and recently shared a message to viewers.
“People I love, have worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly getting caught up in speculation,” Gadd posted on Instagram Stories. “Please don’t speculate on who any of the real life people could be. That’s not the point of our show.”
Foley reshared Gadd’s statement on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The director had previously shared that “police have been informed and are investigating all...

Another month, another Netflix series enrapturing audiences and becoming the talk of the web. April’s, it seems, goes to Baby Reindeer, a miniseries based on actual events experienced by creator Richard Gadd. As names have been changed, it’s really no surprise that amateur sleuths are trying to figure out the true identity of some of the key characters. But Gadd would really like viewers to redirect their focus, telling them they are only missing out on the point of Baby Reindeer.
Richard Gadd took to social media (via BBC) to request one thing to Baby Reindeer viewers: “Please don’t speculate on who any of the real-life people could be. That’s not the point of our show. Lots of love, Richard.”
One of Gadd’s primary goals with Baby Reindeer was to address stalking and abuse in a way that few shows have. As per Netflix, “Stalking...

Baby Reindeer opens with a disclosure typical amid today’s boom in crime content: “This is a true story.”
It’s a fitting declaration as the new Netflix limited series, which shot to No. 1 on the streamer’s TV rankings over the weekend to become the latest viral hit, is based on the life and experiences of its creator, writer, executive producer and star, Richard Gadd. The multihyphenate adapted it from his award-winning Edinburgh Festival Fringe one-man play.
Baby Reindeer casts Gadd as Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian who encounters a lonely woman one day while at his bartending gig. The chance meeting, during which he offers her a complimentary cup of tea when she turns up in tears, spirals over many months as it’s revealed that Martha, who is played by Jessica Gunning, is a dangerous serial stalker.

Baby Reindeer is another surprise runaway hit for Netflix, stunning audiences with its true story-inspired fictionalization of a man’s horrifying experience of stalking and abuse. Based on Richard Gadd‘s autobiographical one-man show, the British drama-thriller is written by and stars Gadd as Donny Dunn, a man who is stalked for ages by Martha Scott (Jessica Gunning) and sexually assaulted by Darrien O’Conner (played by Tom Goodman-Hill). In the wake of the jaw-dropping seven-episode miniseries, some audiences have wondered just how much of the story is based on Gadd’s real-life history — and who these unbelievable characters are based on from his real life. That last bit is taking things too far, however, according to Gadd himself. In an Instagram story, he encouraged viewers of the series to stop trying to figure out the identities of those who are fictionalized in the series, calling out one falsely accused associate by name.

Exclusive: Richard Gadd’s acclaimed new Netflix hit Baby Reindeer will compete in the Limited Series categories for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Deadline can confirm. The seven-episode show is a lightly fictionalized account of Gadd’s own experience with a stalker, who sent him more than 40,000 emails, as well as hundreds of tweets, letters and voicemails, and has been a surprise word-of-mouth hit for the streamer since its April 11 launch.
“The success of Baby Reindeer is still quite hard to fathom having been out now for a little over a week,” says executive producer, writer, and star Richard Gadd. “Who knew this weird story about a self-sabotaging comedian getting stalked and living in the aftermath of abuse would go on to touch so many people’s lives? Inspiration, hopefully, for those in a similar quagmire to keep going.”

Newly-crowned Guadalajara Open champion Maria Sakkari opened up on the challenges she faced in getting over the finish in Saturday's final to win her second career title.
Sakkari was imperious during the week in western Mexico, as she raced to the final without the loss of a set and did not relinquish more than four games in any sets. That was until she met American World No. 111 Caroline Dolehide, the tournament's surprise package who pushed the Greek to her limits.
Sakkari was capable and sturdy, overcoming some early jitters and nerves to beat Dolehide 7-5, 6-3 . She won 70% of her first-serve points and converted four of 11 break points to become a Wta 1000 champion for the first time.
The Greek then opened up on the difficulty of digesting negativity written about her, presumably on social media, about her poor record in finals . She also said people questioned the meritocracy of her...

Movies don’t need to contain oozing blood and gore to be considered horror fare. Psychological horror is a subgenre which can be quite effective at causing terror. Writer/director Sebastian Godwin’s first feature film Homebound is a good example of psychological horror that mostly relies on actors’ reactions to events, which take place off-screen, to scare the audience.
Homebound follows Holly, played by Aisling Loftus (A Discovery of Witches), and Richard, played by Tom Goodman-Hill, newlyweds traveling to the country to meet Richard’s family for the first time. Holly is concerned when they arrive to an empty house, but Richard shrugs it off. Apparently, it’s normal for his ex-wife Nina to refuse to talk to him, but at least she sent him a text apologizing for not being there. Eventually, Richard’s children show up one by one and none of them seem particularly happy to see their father.

"Under your skin, insidious horror." This looks creepy! Brainstorm Media has unveiled an official trailer for Godwin's Homebound, which first premiered at Fantastic Fest and Beyond Fest last year. "The kids aren't ok in Sebastian Godwin’s domestic thriller Homebound." Holly travels with her new fiance Richard to meet his estranged family in the English countryside, only to find his ex-wife is missing and the children behaving in strange ways. It looks especially creepy and unsettling, with reviews calling it "a slight but tension-filled domestic thriller." The indie horror stars Aisling Loftus as Holly, with Tom Goodman-Hill, Raffiella Chapman, Hattie Gotobed, and Lukas Rolfe. Oh those crazy kids. This looks unexpectedly good, with a few seriously unsettling moments with the kids seemingly leading to an intense showdown. It's worth a look. Here's the official trailer (+ two posters) for Sebastian Godwin's Homebound, direct from YouTube: Holly is (Aisling Loftus) excited...

This feature debut draws on spooky genre tropes but fails to develop its plot and atmosphere
Just like in many horror films that have come before, a trip to the countryside goes terribly awry in Sebastian Godwin’s feature debut. Taken to an imposing mansion on isolated land, Holly (Aisling Loftus) is nervous about meeting the mother and the children of her new husband Richard (Tom Goodman-Hill). To make matters worse, on their arrival Richard’s estranged ex-wife is nowhere to be found on the sprawling property. Meanwhile, the children begin to behave strangely: locked doors and the eerie rustling of trees hint at a frightening secret to which only the children have the key.
There is nothing wrong with reviving well-worn genre tropes, and Homebound’s setting does vaguely recall the pleasures of spooky British TV classics such as The Owl Service. Still, as the plot is fairly simple,...

Following the shy but well-intentioned Holly (Aisling Loftus) as she travels with her fiancé Richard (Tom Goodman-Hill) to meet his three children for the first time, Sebastian Godwin's Homebound, which is screening in the Frightfest strand at this year's Glasgow Film Festival, is one of those odd little films which doesn't quite fit comfortably into any genre, but whose very peculiarity gives it a wonderful freshness. It features some great performances, especially from the children, but also depends heavily on its striking setting, the house in which they live.
When I ask Sebastian how he managed to find that house, he laughs and says "With great difficulty!" – but goes on to expand on the process.

When you hear WWI, trenches and trench warfare often spring to mind. The War Below is based on a true story about World War I but instead of trenches, it is about some clever, skilled tunnelers seeking to sabotage German forces.
World War I, then called the Great War, and the “War to End All Wars,” was a earth-shattering conflict, changing the nature of warfare, remaking the political and physical landscape, and decimating a generation of young men. The War Below is based on the true story of a group of British sewer tunnelers from Yorkshire, nicknamed the “clay-kickers,” who were brought in by “Hellfire Jack” Col. John Norton-Griffiths to help break the stalemate with the German forces in the battle of Messines in 1917. The result of their near-miraculous efforts was a massive explosion under the enemy line,...

I kicked off Fantastic Fest 2021 with a little family thriller called Homebound. It’s a character-driven piece that is an exercise in both tension and dread. If there is one thing that I have learned from horror movies over the past few years, it’s that you don’t have to travel far from home to find something disturbing and unsettling. The people you know and are connected with can sometimes be even more terrifying than the monster lurking under your bed.
Holly (Aisling Loftus) is both excited and nervous at the prospect of meeting her fiancé's children. I find it somewhat incredible that after all these years we are still finding new and exciting stories to tell about the First and Second World War. There seemingly is no end to the acts of heroism exhibited in those trying times. In terms of movies it just seems like we are obsessed with the genre, proven by the fact that wether it be a Sam Mendes epic or a slightly lower budget J.P. Watts flick we are going to be given more than 1 or 2 war movies a year.

Despite the fact it’s an historical event from so long ago now, and has been portrayed on the screen countless times, World War I remains a difficult subject to cover. Originality and the delicate balance of emotions are two such challenges, but The War Below ticks both boxes and then some.
One thing all Great War adaptations have in common is that they tell a true story – partially at least – and this is about the little-known tale of a ragtag group of recruits whose mission was to tunnel under no-man’s land to gain an advantage on the Western Front.
They were in fact a group of miners hired for their specialist skills, a last roll of the dice to break the deadlock in the Battle of Messines. Led by William ‘Bill’ Hawkins they soon find life in the trenches is like nothing they could ever have imagined.

Real-life account of miners recruited in the first world war to burrow beneath German lines is fascinating does well on a limited budget
‘Gentlemen, tonight we may not make history, but we’ll certainly change the bloody geography.” British army colonel Hellfire Jack (Tom Goodman-Hill) gives sterling quotation (though it was apparently said in real life by a different officer) in this spirited film about the tunnelling and sabotage efforts at the battle of Messines in 1917. Despite his doubts, the operation finished in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever, killing 10,000 Germans. A fairly new angle for cinema on the first world war (though also the subject of 2010’s Beneath Hill 60), Jp Watts’s subterranean drama has an innately fascinating story, even if the underpinning is of unsound construction in places.
To his shame, pit-village miner William Hawkins (Sam Hazeldine) is turned away for conscription because of a “crackle” in his lungs.
Armie Hammer brings Lily James to Manderley in the first trailer for “Rebecca,” a modern take on Daphne du Maurier’s classic gothic thriller novel.
The Netflix film, directed by Ben Wheatley, follows a newly married woman (James) as she arrives at the English estate of her wealthy husband Maxim de Winter (Hammer). “She was the love of his life,” Mrs. Danvers tells the second Mrs. de Winter in the trailer. “I wonder what she would think of you — taking her husband, using her name.”
Though the film covers multiple genres, Wheatley described “Rebecca” as a love story, first and foremost.

After a prolific streak the first half of the previous decade with Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England, High-Rise, and Free Free, it’s been awhile since we’ve seen Ben Wheatley. While Happy New Year, Colin Burstead is still awaiting a U.S. release, he’s now returning this fall with an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s gothic novel Rebecca, famously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock for his 1940 Best Picture winner.
Featuring Armie Hammer and Lily James taking the lead roles, with Kristin Scott Thomas becoming Mrs. Danvers, if you ask the director, he’s not following in the footsteps of The Master of Suspense. “It’s not, in any sense, a remake of the Hitchcock film, firmly not,” he tells Empire. “Remaking a film is not that interesting to me, but the original source material is. [Note: With High Fliers Films re-releasing The Rizen on VOD this week, here’s a reposting of our review from the films original DVD release back in early 2018]
The Rizen is a UK indie-horror film set in a black hallway during the early days of the Cold War in 1955. You can tell this a period piece by the handcrafted, vintage style black walls and black floors. If this movies set design got any darker it would write poetry and start cutting itself.
I had a hard time getting into this film before I even hit the play button. The title is The Rizen. No, not “the risen” as in “the dead has risen” if you’re referencing zombies, or “He has risen” if you’re referencing theological zombies.

"I want her to be like everyone else." Vertical Entertainment has debuted the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Where Hands Touch, premiering at the Toronto Film Festival coming up. This is the latest film by filmmaker Amma Asante and it's about a young mixed-race girl living in Nazi Germany in the 1940s. Inspired by a real photo of an African-German woman during WWII, the film stars Amandla Stenberg as Leyna, a courageous teen who must figure out how to survive when the Nazis start eradicating anyone that didn't fit into their perfect Aryan society. The cast includes George MacKay, Abbie Cornish, Christopher Eccleston, Tom Goodman-Hill, Alec Newman, Olivia Vinall, and Will Attenborough. This looks very good, not a story I have heard of before, but I'm very much interested in seeing this now. Stenberg keeps appearing in more and more and she's always impressive. Check this out.

As far as I can tell The Rizen is purposefully misspelled like “Kewl Katz” or “Hawt Dawg”. I had to Google...
