‘The History of Sound’ Review: Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor Make Love and Music in Oliver Hermanus’ Affecting Wartime Romance
Image
The false notes are rare in director Oliver Hermanus’ affecting and dustily textured romance “The History of Sound,” written by Ben Shattuck from his own short story about men in love, together and apart, circa World War I and its aftermath. But for a queer love story starring two of the hottest, of-this-moment leading actors around — Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor — “The History of Sound” almost perversely denies your expectations of what a gay romance could be.

The grandiose, sweeping emotional gestures toward repression and latent desire out of something like “Brokeback Mountain” are nowhere here, Hermanus instead following the lonesome Lionel (Mescal) around America’s hidden corners and eventually into Europe for much of this melancholy mood movie.

Mescal and O’Connor play Boston Conservatory music students who meet in 1917, spend winding but limited bouts of time with one another over the years, and on the way to the film’s rueful conclusion.

How Range Media Partners Is Weathering The Storm And Disrupting The Industry
Image
Five years ago this August, a handful of the best and brightest agents from CAA and WME stunned the town by abruptly leaving high-profile jobs to start a new company that sought to be a hybrid between the agencies where they grew up, repping clients as managers. Even before the major agencies were driven out of packaging and affiliated production businesses after a long WGA standoff, management companies bore fewer shackles in areas like the ability to produce and were able to be more hands on and entrepreneurial in helping clients be the same.

Range was a company born out of the pandemic, which shut down Hollywood and gave entrepreneurial dealmakers time to confront the existential question: Is this all there is for me? On August 23, 2020, Deadline revealed that former CAA and eOne exec Peter Micelli, CAA talent agents Jack Whigham, Michael Cooper, Mick Sullivan and Dave Bugliari, WME lit agent Rich Cook,...

Cillian Murphy & Daniel Craig In Talks To Star In Prison Movie From Oscar-Winning Director
Image
Daniel Craig and Cillian Murphy are reportedly eying starring roles in a new prison film from a major director. Craig is best known for playing James Bond across five films, starting his tenure with Casino Royale in 2006 and bidding farewell to the role in 2021 with No Time To Die. The actor has also starred in movies like Knives Out (2019) and its 2022 sequel. Murphy, on the other hand, recently starred in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer(2023), following roles in movies like 28 Days Later (2002), The Dark Knight (2008), and Inception (2010).

Deadline now reports that Craig and Murphy are in talks to star in a new film from director Damien Chazelle. The film is currently untitled, but the report suggests that it will be set in a prison. Chazelle has already written the script and will produce with Olivia Hamilton through their Wild Chickens Production banner. The movie also already has distribution planned through Paramount.

Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig in Talks to Star in Damien Chazelle’s Next Film
Image
Oscar winner Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig are in negotiations to star in the next film from director Damien Chazelle, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

The film is untitled, and while the “La La Land” and “Whiplash” filmmaker has weighed options such as an Evel Knievel biopic, several media reports say Chazelle’s follow-up to “Babylon” is set inside a prison. Leonardo DiCaprio had been circling the Knievel film, but a deal didn’t close.

Paramount Pictures is distributing the next Chazelle feature as part of his deal with the studio. Chazelle wrote and will produce the movie under his banner Wild Chickens Productions alongside Olivia Hamilton.

Chazelle’s “Babylon” from 2022 bombed at the box office but was an ambitious Old Hollywood epic starring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt. With an $80 million budget and 3+ hour runtime, the film fizzled with just $65.2 million worldwide. But Chazelle can...

Ryan Murphy at an event for Eat Pray Love (2010)
The Shards: Kaia Gerber to star in new Ryan Murphy series based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel
Ryan Murphy at an event for Eat Pray Love (2010)
Deadline reports that prolific producer Ryan Murphy is setting up his next project at FX, a series adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis‘ The Shards starring Kaia Gerber (American Horror Story).

The series will be directed by Max Winkler, who has worked on many Muprhy projects. He’s helmed episodes of American Horror Story, American Horror Stories, The Watcher, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and Grotesquerie.

The Shards is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale which follows a 17-year-old version of Ellis during his final year at Buckley prep school. When the enigmatic new student Robert Mallory arrives on campus, Ellis suspects he might be connected to the nearby serial killer known as The Trawler. The story was initially released on Ellis’ Patreon in 2020 as a serialized audiobook, but was published as a novel in 2023.

Daniel Craig reportedly offered the lead in Damien Chazelle’s prison movie
Image
Whiplash director Damien Chazelle currently has a prison movie on his slate – with Daniel Craig potentially starring.

Here’s some interesting news to begin the week: it looks like Damien Chazelle’s untitled prison movie project may still be alive and well. Not only that, but the project could yet become the Whiplash director’s next film if Leonardo DiCaprio doesn’t commit to leaping over 20 double decker buses while riding motorbike for Chazelle’s planned biopic of the legendary stunt rider, Evel Knievel.

A short recap.

In 2022, Chazelle released Babylon, an expensive ode to the excesses of Old Hollywood. It was a resounding piece of cinema but didn’t land with audiences and proved to be a costly loss for Paramount. In the wake of Babylon’s financial failure, Chazelle even publicly admitted that he could be in ‘director jail’ and spoke candidly about his fears that his next...

Benny Safdie’s A24 title The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, and films from Chloe Zhao, Edward Berger, Alice Winocour and Yorgos Lanthimos are all being tipped to debut on the Lido.

After a quiet 2024 in Venice, Netflix may be back with Berger’s Macao-set The Ballad Of A Small Player starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton. Focus Features has two major possibilities: Zhao’s Hamnet, starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal (although the Nov 27 US release date may suggest a later festival...

Andrew Garfield to Replace Matthew McConaughey in Jason Bourne in New Movie
Image
Andrew Garfield is in talks to join the cast of Jason Bourne director Paul Greengrass' next movie. The Spider-Man: No Way Home star will replace Matthew McConaughey in The Rage.

Deadline reports that Garfield will play a character loosely inspired by the real life revolutionary Wat Tyler, though the website cautioned the inspiration for the Tick, Tick... Boom! actor's character hasn't been confirmed. Regardless, The Rage will take place during the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England, where a group of protesters marched from Canterbury to London to demand socio economic reforms and a cancellation of the poll tax from King Richard II.

Andrew Garfield Joins Period Drama The Rage

If Garfield is playing Wat Tyler, he would be following the footsteps of Anthony Hopkins — who played the rebel in 1969's Medieval England: The Peasants Revolt. Benedict Cumberbatch was originally attached to play Tyler in The Rage before McConaughey came on board.

Andrew Garfield & Focus Features Nearing Deals To Join Paul Greengrass Peasant Revolt Movie ‘The Rage’: Cannes Market
Image
Exclusive: In one of the bigger deals being thrashed out during the Cannes market, we hear that Focus Features is working on a domestic pact in the $11M range for Paul Greengrass’ peasant revolt movie The Rage.

Two-time Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield is now in active negotiations to join the movie in the lead role, taking over from Matthew McConaughey.

The film is set during the Peasants’ Revolt, a major uprising that took part across large parts of England in 1381 in response to socio-economic and political tensions and high taxation. Should a deal get done, which we understand is likely, Garfield would play a farmer who becomes the leader of the revolt. It has been speculated that the character could be based on the legendary Wat Tyler, who led the uprising before being killed by forces loyal to King Richard, though this is unconfirmed.

Garfield’s English background (the dual UK-u.

The Accountant 2 Climbs Amazon's All-Time Highest Grossing Movie Chart At The Domestic Box Office
Image
The action sequel The Accountant 2, which sees Ben Affleck reprising his role as autistic action hero Christian Wolff opposite returning co-stars Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and J. K. Simmons, is climbing an important box office chart. The Accountant 2 opening weekend was underwhelming, with a $24.5 million domestic gross seeing it debut at No. 3 behind the second weekend of Sinners and the 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. It also had a harsh 61.3% drop during its sophomore weekend, but it has since leveled out and continued to climb the domestic chart.

Per The Numbers, The Accountant 2 has hit a domestic box office total of $53.6 million, just ahead of its fourth weekend in theaters. This is enough for it to surpass the $52.6 earned by George Clooney's 2023 rowing movie The Boys in the Boat and the $50.1 million earned by Luca Guadagnino's 2024 tennis drama Challengers,...

Young Italian Filmmakers Come to the Fore at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard
Image
This year’s Italian presence at Cannes – one entry in competition by veteran auteur Mario Martone and two by young directors that landed slots in Un Certain Regard – accurately reflects the current state of Cinema Italiano.

Broadly speaking, following a protracted growth spurt, there has been a slowdown in production activity caused by the fact that the government has been dithering with modifications on tax incentives for local film and TV productions, which has stalled the greenlight process, especially for bigger-budget Italian movies.

But even though getting films financed has gotten tougher, a new generation of directors is bubbling under, alongside well-known names such as Paolo Sorrentino, Luca Guadagnino, Alice Rohrwacher and Nanni Moretti.

“I have the impression that once again we are seeing young [Italian] directors emerging and this is formidable,” Thierry Fremaux noted while announcing the lineup. The Cannes boss went on to add that “Italy is historically a...

Why ‘Highlander’ Left Lionsgate for Amazon as the Studio Bets Big on ’80s IP
Image
Chad Stalhelski, the erstwhile stunt coordinator-turned-director who transformed “John Wick” from a potential direct-to-video action movie into one of the most inventive, visually ravishing franchises in modern cinema, was ready for a change.

He had made four films in the Keanu Reeves-starring series, with the fourth film grossing almost $450 million worldwide. More importantly, he had created an entirely new universe for Lionsgate and producers Thunder Road that now included streaming series, big screen spinoffs and an upcoming animated prequel. Stahelski would still oversee these projects, but he hankered for something different. He wanted to reinvent a classic from his childhood, the 1986 fantasy film “Highlander,” in a way that only he could – his version would be bold, brutal and 100% his.

Stahelski first started working on a new “Highlander” movie in 2016, but as it finally seemed primed to go into production, TheWrap learned last month that Stahelski’s “Highlander” would move...

One of the most anticipated rumored movies has finally been made official by A24. Enemies, a new crime saga by Henry Dunham (The Standoff at Sparrow Creek), will be led by two of the most popular young actors working today. The Bear's Jeremy Allen White and The Bikeriders star Austin Butler will lead the new crime thriller. The pair's partnership in the project had long been rumored on social media, and A24 has finally put the speculation to rest with a positive update.

Deadline confirmed the casting in a new report. Enemies is set to begin production this summer in Chicago on a relatively limited budget of $25 million. Dunham is writing and directing the film, with A24 regular Ari Aster (Midsommar and Hereditary) producing. Plot details about the movie remain scarce, but the report confirmed that the film will follow a "relentless detective" and an "infamous contract killer," most...

Sgt. Rock Character Details Revealed; Cillian Murphy, Mikey Madison, And More Were Offered Lead Roles
Image
We recently learned that DC Studios has decided to shelve Sgt. Rock. There's been some chatter about the movie shooting in 2026 instead, but it seems likely filmmaker Luca Guadagnino will move on. Colin Farrell, meanwhile, may have to do the same if The Batman Part II begins filming as planned.

According to Nexus Point News, the plan had been to shoot Sgt. Rock for roughly 6 weeks on location and outdoors (the UK's weather has been blamed on the decision to halt production).

The site adds that Farrell entered talks to play the title character after Daniel Craig walked away and Jeremy Allen White declined the role. Cillian Murphy also passed after being offered the chance to play the obscure DC Comics hero.

In terms of plot details, "The film would have followed Sgt. Frank Rock, Mademoiselle Marie, and the Easy Company as they fight the Nazis in a battle to...

Mubi Deep Dive: Founder Efe Cakarel & Content Boss Jason Ropell Lift The Lid On Rapid Growth & Next Steps…But What Does The Industry Think?
Image
This is Mubi’s time. With studio specialty divisions almost a relic of the past and international and independent cinema soaring on the awards stage, the arthouse mini-studio founded by Efe Cakarel is cutting a growing swathe across the film landscape. Mubi is back on the Cannes Croisette with three films in Competition and another in Un Certain Regard.

Director Luca Guadagnino, a previous collaborator, is one of the company’s many fans in high places: “Mubi is a great and passionate company,” he says. “They will grow a lot as a business.”

Eye-catching growth has certainly been a hallmark of the company’s last few years.

Jason Ropell

Former investment banker and MIT graduate Cakarel founded the London-based company — then known as The Auteurs — back in 2007. These days, the headcount stands at more than 400 globally across 14 offices. And Cakarel believes that Mubi can become “many times its current size” in coming years.

When Chalamet earned his first best actor nomination in 2017 for Guadagnino’s “Call Me” at 22, he was the third-youngest nominee ever in that category.

Image
DC Comics Sgt. Rock is one of the most famous characters of all time, backed by a prolific comic book legacy. Despite several attempts to bring the character to live-action several times over the years, no such project has been able to make it past the development stage.

While DC Studios recently canceled a Sgt. Rock film under director Luca Guadagnino, there was once a time that the Die Hard team almost came close to making a live-action film. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the iconic character, the project unfortunately fell apart, all thanks to Clint Eastwood.

“That would’ve been a pitiful attempt”: Real Reason Why Christian Bale Didn’t Use Method Acting in ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’
Image
Actor Christian Bale is known for his chameleon-like quality he brings to his roles, which often require dramatic transformations. As a result, it is no surprise that Bale leans heavily towards method acting, especially for some of his more prominent roles that have established him as one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood.

Despite being known for his stint as DC’s Dark Knight on the big screen, Bale also forayed into the MCU with his appearance in Thor: Love & Thunder. However, Bale admitted in an interview that his role as the film’s primary villain did not require him to pull on his method acting muscles, and here is what the actor had to say about his approach to the role.

Mary Harron

Guadagnino reportedly signed on to direct the film from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) back in October, and in December we heard that Austin Butler (Elvis) and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) were being considered for the lead role of Patrick Bateman, the character who was played by Christian Bale in Harron’s film. Guadagnino confirmed the project at the CinemaCon event last month – and now, original American Psycho cast member Chloë Sevigny, who played Patrick Bateman’s secretary Jean, has told IndieWire that...

'The White Lotus' Star Would Love To Lead 'American Psycho' Remake
Image
Patrick Schwarzeneggerhas shown some love towards an upcoming remake, revealing that he would like to have a part in it. The star of HBO's "resort people are the worst" series, The White Lotus, most likely saw his career go one step up after the success of Season 3, where he played an annoying rich young man who saw his insecurities arise while staying at the Thai branch of the hotel. Nevertheless, there's one specific role that Patrick is apparently seeking, and that is Patrick Bateman, the main character in the thrillerAmerican Psycho.

A reboot of American Psycho is currently in development, with Suspiria and Challengers director Luca Guadagnino at the helm. Casting for this new adaptation remains to be confirmed, and while Elvis' Austin Butler always seemed like an obvious frontrunner, Guadagnino has simply not talked about the new Patrick Bateman.

In October 2024, it was revealed that a new American Psycho movie was in development, with Luca Guadagnino (known for Queer and Challengers) attached to direct and Scott Z. Burns (Extrapolations) writing the script for Lionsgate. Now we've learned that one of the stars from the original 2000 horror classic wants to return and reprise their role in the upcoming reimagining. That star is Golden Globe Award-winning actress Chloë Sevigny, who played Patrick Bateman’s secretary Jean in Mary Harron's American Psycho adaptation.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Sevigny spoke about her desire to return to the American Psycho universe, expressing interest in reprising her role as Jean in Guadagnino's new take. Although she initially wasn’t sure if the director was officially moving forward with the project, she pitched the idea of returning to her character with the help of de-aging technology. It was recently revealed that Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino wouldn’t be shooting the DC Comics film “Sgt. Chloë Sevigny Pitched Luca Guadagnino To Reprise Her ‘American Psycho’ Role
Image
As Hollywood patiently awaits a new Patrick Bateman, one American Psycho (2000) alum wants to reprise their role.

Chloë Sevigny, who can next be seen in Luca Guadagnino‘s thriller After the Hunt, revealed she pitched the director on revisiting the character of Patrick’s secretary Jean in his upcoming adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 book.

“When I heard that [Guadagnino] was maybe doing it … I pitched to him that I should play Jean again, and that they do that reverse-aging on me,” she told IndieWire. “I thought that would be something that he would be into, conceptually having the same actress play the same part.”

Sevigny added, “But I don’t know. He said he was going to think of something else for me.”

Original ‘American Psycho’ Star Can Very Much Return in Luca Guadagnino’s Remake and Now I Want Christian Bale Back
Image
As far as remakes and legacy sequels go, which often can be summed up as a product of corporate greed, the upcoming American Psycho might bring something new to the table. Earlier this year, Luca Guadagnino, the mind behind hits, including Challengers and Call Me By Your Name, teased a new adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel, with a script from Scott Z. Burns.

Although the movie is said to be a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel rather than a remake of the Christian Bale-starrer, Chloë Sevigny, who was involved in the first movie, was hoping to return in this retelling.

'Do That Reverse-Aging on Me': American Psycho Star Wants to Reprise Role in Upcoming Reboot
Image
American Psycho's Chloë Sevigny is ready to reprise her role in Luca Guadagnino's new adaptation. She's already talked with him about having a part in the new picture.

Sevigny originally starred opposite Christian Bale in the 2000 American Psycho film as Jean, Patrick Bateman's (Bale) secretary. It's a role that Sevigny seems eager to reprise in a new adaptation of the controversial Bret Easton Ellis novel. "When I heard that [Luca Guadagnino] was maybe doing it, I don’t know if he is for sure. I thought he was doing a World War II picture," Sevigny told IndieWire. "I pitched to him that I should play Jean again, and that they do that reverse-aging on me."

It appears that Guadgnino wasn't quite as enthusiastic about the idea. "I thought that would be something that he would be into, conceptually having the same actress play the same part. But I don’t know.

Patrick Schwarzenegger Says He Would ‘Love Nothing More’ Than to Star in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘American Psycho’
Image
Move over, Austin Butler, there is a new young star vying to play Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s highly anticipated “American Psycho.”

An X user (formerly Twitter) posted on April 30 that he had “found” Schwarzenegger’s “breakout role,” replying to a report that “American Psycho” will be Guadagnino’s next film in production. Schwarzenegger then responded to the post, writing, “I’d love nothing more.”

This isn’t the first time the “White Lotus” star has expressed interest in playing the murderous Wall Street banker. Back in 2024, in a reply to Variety‘s X post reporting Guadagnino’s undertaking of a new “American Psycho” film, Schwarzenegger wrote, “My dream.”

Back in late 2024, Variety exclusively reported that Butler was in talks to star in Guadagnino’s “American Psycho” as Patrick Bateman, a role originated by Christian Bale in 2000. However, no further developments have been made toward Butler joining the film,...

Patrick Schwarzenegger, who plays Saxon Ratliff in The White Lotus, took to social media to voice his interest in playing the lead character in the upcoming American Psycho remake. Should Patrick Schwarzenegger be the next Patrick Bateman?
When Sports came out in ‘83, they really came into their own. He’s been compared to Elvis Costello but he has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. Ok, that’s enough about Huey Lewis — let’s chat Patrick Schwarzenegger, as the actor has once again teased his interest in playing Patrick Bateman in the upcoming American Psycho remake from Luca Guadagnino.

Replying to a user on X who said Patrick Bateman could be Schwarzenegger’s breakout role, the actor wrote, “I’d love nothing more ;)”. All right, we shouldn’t look too much into winking here but let’s all admit that Patrick Schwarzenegger would be perfect as Patrick Bateman. He has the physique, he has the offbeat charm, he has the confidence, and it’s someone that our very own Kier Gomes suggested get the role (and I totally agree!) And he is well on his way to that “breakout” role,...

Patrick Schwarzenegger Had “Fun” Filming Incest Scenes, Now He Wants to Dissect Girls in ‘American Psycho’ Remake
Image
Patrick Schwarzenegger has once again opened up about his wish to succeed Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman on screen. Schwarzenegger is a long-time fan of American Psycho and has been vocal about his desire to take over the role of Patrick Bateman in the remake.

But Patrick Schwarzenegger’s insane desire to “dissect girls” does not sound unnatural after how he recently became the talk of the town for an incestuous s*x scene in The White Lotus Season 3. While the world was shocked to see the moment between Saxon Ratliff and his younger brother, Schwarzenegger revealed that he had “fun” filming the controversial scene.

Chloë Sevigny
Chloë Sevigny has expressed interest in returning as Jean, the character she portrayed in the 2000 adaptation of American Psycho, for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film based on the same source material. “I pitched to him that I should play Jean again and that they do that reverse-aging on me,” she said in a recent IndieWire interview. “I thought that would be something that he would be into, conceptually having the same actress play the same part.” According to Sevigny, Guadagnino responded by saying he was thinking of another role for her.
