It’s the ’90s, and a killer is on the loose in Los Angeles. Bodies have been washing up, and the murderer is nowhere to be found. But when an obsessive deputy sheriff from the country teams up with a by-the-book detective, their relentlessness leads them down a dark road that brings them inches away from the truth… or so they think. The 2021 movie The Little Things from John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) stars Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto.

During the pandemic, most of us apparently watched Chris Hemsworth's actioner "Extraction" more than anything else, with the 2020 film becoming the most popular Netflix original movie at the time. But I remember being much more excited for "The Little Things."
This neo-noir crime thriller from writer-director John Lee Hancock seemed to have it all — especially if you happened to be a '90s kid with fond memories of "Seven." The trailer for "The Little Things" promised Denzel Washington in full jaded cop mode as Kern County Sheriff's Office deputy Joe Deacon, tracking down a serial killer in early-'90s Los Angeles with the help of a much younger, idealistic L.A. cop in the form of Rami Malek's James Baxter. It might have sounded a tad formulaic, but I'll take any noir-tinged thriller promising to give us a peek under California's carapace and reveal the seedy underworld therein.

Kevin Costner starred as an escaped convict who takes a boy hostage in Clint Eastwood’s 1993 film, A Perfect World. Eastwood was given the script right after his Oscar-winning film Unforgiven. He intended to take a break from the double duty of directing and acting, however, Costner convinced him to play the role of Texas Ranger Red Garnett. Interestingly, Costner and Eastwood did not see eye to eye on many of the creative decisions in the film.

As Academy Awards contenders go, “The Holdovers” remains a combined odds frontrunner at Gold Derby in one category (Best Supporting Actress), second in two others and more of an obvious longshot in two more following its three Spirit Awards triumphs on Sunday. But the one thing the Alexander Payne-directed film featuring Oscar nominees Paul Giamatti and awards season juggernaut Da’Vine Joy Randolph, along with dazzling newcomer Dominic Sessa, has going for it as Oscar voting winds down is an impressive number of endorsements of support from famous folks who have moderated Q&As or made their photo presence felt at FYC events simply because they love the film.

All hail Denzel Washington. “The Equalizer 3” (Sony) opening to $34.5 million is the biggest debut since “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer” — and with a reported budget of $70 million, the opening came at a reasonable price.
Washington is a deeply respected actor, but this success wasn’t a sure thing for reasons beyond strike-hampered promotion. Since the second “Equalizer” in 2018, Washington made only one wide-release film. Warner Bros. released John Lee Hancock’s “The Little Things” in Covid-era January 2021 and it grossed just $31 million domestic.
The other winner this week is Taylor Swift for the disruptive interjection of her “The Eras Tour” concert film, released by AMC Distribution. It opens October 13, but her announcement August 30 led to first-day ticket sales of $26 million with a ticket price of $19.89. It’s positioned to provide the best box office for theaters until “The Marvels” (Disney) opens in November.

Producers behind “The Blind Side” have issued a statement affirming the authenticity of Michael Oher’s story as told in the film, responding to Oher’s recent allegations that the Tuohy family fabricated his adoption and instead placed him in a conservatorship that he is still restricted to.
“We feel it is now important for us to respond to some recent media reports, which include many mischaracterizations and uninformed opinions,” Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, “Blind Side” producers of and co-founders of Alcon Entertainment, said in a statement Thursday. “The impetus for these stories has been a lawsuit by Michael Oher, which seems to have given critics and journalists alike a justification to unfairly pick apart the movie fourteen years later – some going so far as to call it ‘fake’ or a ‘lie.’”

Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, the co-founders of The Blind Side financier Alcon Entertainment, who also served as producers for the supposedly true-life family drama, have addressed controversy stemming from a recent lawsuit filed by pic’s subject Michael Oher, claiming there have been “many mischaracterizations and uninformed opinions” put out about the situation, and that the film they made is “as true today as it was 14 years ago.”

Sean is speaking out following the allegations made by Michael Oher claiming he was tricked into signing a conservatorship which the Tuohys used to profit off his name.
Oher was the subject of the 2009 film The Blind Side, which in turn was based on a book by Michael Lewis. The John Lee Hancock-directed movie was a rag-to-riches story centered around Oher getting adopted by the Tuohy family who would guide him to pursue a career in football that would lead him to star in the NFL.
The offensive tackle player is now saying the film and book were based on a lie, something that Tuohy is contesting.

Hollywood loves feel-good, based-on-real-life sports dramas, and isn't shy about drastically altering the facts to mine these tales for maximum stand-up-and-cheer potential. The scrappy high-school basketball underdogs in "Hoosiers" were, despite the school's small enrollment, actually a top team in the state during that supposed Cinderella season (which is why the filmmakers opted to set the film in a fictional town). "Remember the Titans" is riddled with inaccuracies, one of the most egregious being that T.C. Williams High School's climactic game against George C. Marshall High occurred in the middle of the season. And while the title character of "Rudy" did fulfill his dream of suiting up for his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish, retired NFL quarterback Joe Montana, who was on the team at the time, says the dramatic uniform-dumping scene is a pure fabrication.

Retired NFL star Michael Oher, whose life story was captured in John Lee Hancock’s 2009 film “The Blind Side,” is alleging that his seemingly adoptive parents forced him into a questionable conservatorship at age 18.
Oher, who began living with Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy while in high school in Tennessee, claims the Tuohy family never legally adopted him and instead had him enter a conservatorship less than three months after he turned 18 in 2004. John Lee Hancock's crime drama "The Little Things" premiered in theaters and on HBO Max in January 2021, one of the first films to be released under the Covid-induced deal whereby Warner Bros. films hit the streamer the same day as cinemas. The film involves a serial killer terrorizing Los Angeles in the early 90s, and it follows the two detectives on his tail, trying to catch him before he kills again. Really, though, it's about the cops' obsession with the case and the way that obsession leads them to disregard their morals.
"The Little Things" currently sits at 45% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviews mention the film's unsatisfying ending as a mark against it; after all, "The Little Things" leaves viewers with more questions than answers, which is not what you expect from a detective story. In addition to his own original work on screens big and small, Mike Flanagan has proved himself adept at adapting Stephen King stories, including Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. He's back on the King beat, planning to bring The Life Of Chuck to screens with Mark Hamill and Tom Hiddleston starring.
Chuck, which Flanagan wrote and will direct, is drawn from the short story which appeared in King's 2020 collection, If It Bleeds (which also gave us John Lee Hancock's Mr Harrigan's Phone last year).
It's three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumour at 39 and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house. While there are supernatural elements (and some apocalyptic imagery), it's less focused on fear than some of King's other stories, tonally closer to The Shawshank Redemption or Stand By Me. In 1982, Stephen King released a collection known in the film industry as a magic book. Different Seasons consists of four novellas each linked to a season of the year and contains the source material for some of Hollywood’s most successful films. The collection’s third novella, The Body is the inspiration for Rob Reiner’s Stand By Me and the first, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, was adapted into Frank Darabont’s film (with a shortened title) which still holds the highest ranking on IMDb. The only story that has yet to be adapted is the fourth novella, The Breathing Method, a Christmas Story about a horrifying miracle birth. Though aligned with summer, the second story in the collection, Apt Pupil, is easily the darkest. Subtitled Summer of Discontent, Apt Pupil tells the story of Todd Bowden, a teenager who blackmails his neighbor–a former Nazi hiding in...

Stephen King’s been known to write a doorstop or two, but within the prolific author’s oeuvre are tales that amount to a fraction of “It.” What these novellas lack in page-count, though, they make up for in thrills. Some of the most successful cinematic translations of his work come from this short-fiction subset.
“The Shawshank Redemption”—a two-and-a-half-hour prison drama adapted from the 181-page novella, “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption”—is widely considered one of the greatest movies ever made. Released by Netflix earlier this month and just in time for Halloween, “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone” is the newest product of King’s fruitful relationship with the film industry.

Stephen King currently holds the distinction of being the living author with the most adaptations of his work, the latest being Netflix's take on "Mr. Harrigan's Phone." Directed and adapted by John Lee Hancock, "Mr. Harrigan's Phone" is a classic ghost story with a modern twist. A reclusive billionaire named Mr. Harrigan (Donald Sutherland) hires a youngster named Craig (Jaeden Martell) to read to him as his eyesight is starting to weaken in his old age. The two strike up an unlikely friendship, but one that is deeply meaningful to them both.
The pair are constantly learning from one another, with Mr. Harrigan even purchasing his very first iPhone after seeing Craig's excitement at receiving one of his own for Christmas. Alas, Mr. Harrigan passes away and Craig places Mr. Harrigan's phone in his burial suit pocket before saying his final goodbyes. Feeling lonely, Craig one day sends a text to his late friend,...

Netflix’s highly touted and well publicized (perhaps too well) Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde” dropped off its top 10 movie chart after only eight days, only three of those at number one. This stunning result reaffirms the suspicion that, as much as subscribers gravitate to originals, top directors and awards attention don’t provide a leg up when it comes to viewer interest.
There can be exceptions and it’s likely that “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will be one of them. Rian Johnson’s film will have the benefit of its predecessor, a theatrical hit, as well as its cast and strong reviews..

Ryan Murphy’s true crime limited series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has been a massive hit for Netflix, a dominant #1 series globally since its Sept. 21 release and on track to become the streamer’s second most popular English-language show only behind Season 4 of Stranger Things. Released Wednesday, Oct. 5, horror film Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, which Murphy produced, also quickly shot up to the top spot, giving the prolific writer-producer-director the #1 Film and #1 TV Series in the U.S. on Friday. It is believed to be the first time a producer has held the two top spots simultaneously.
Netflix only provides global tallies weekly but confirmed that both Murphy titles were #1 on the respective film and series lists in 60 countries Friday, making them global #1s for the day. We will have to wait until Tuesday to see whether Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, directed and written by John Lee Hancock based on Stephen King’s novella,...

“Stand by your man…”
Hear that? There’s a ringing from beneath the soil. Well, The Losers’ Club is answering the call. Not from the Ghostbusters, but Mr. Harrigan’s Phone. Directed by John Lee Hancock and starring both Jaeden Martell and Donald Sutherland, the new Netflix adaptation of Stephen King’s If It Bleeds novella has arrived and the gang has thoughts.
Join Losers Michael Roffman, Randall Colburn, and Jenn Adams, as they discuss John Lee Hancock’s vision, the involvement of Blumhouse in King’s Dominion, and whether this is an Old Man Yell at Clouds Movie. Stick around, though, because later on, star Jaeden Martell joins the Losers for a chat to discuss King, our reliance on phones, and his favorite tunes.
Stream the episode below and return next week when the Losers dust off an old Crate episode on Clive Barker’s Hellraiser — just in time...

When watching “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone,” an image comes to mind of a secret cabal of horror writers, meeting in their private horror clubs, collectively raising their glasses and cursing the gosh-darned day that cellular phones were invented.
Cell phones, especially the “smart” ones, make many aspects of our lives more convenient. But for horror writers, they seem like a real pain in the rump. How do you strand someone in the middle of nowhere if they can call an Uber? How do you trap them in darkness if they always have a flashlight? How do you keep them ignorant of the plot when they can look up useful facts about demonology in an instant?
So many horror stories nowadays go out of their way to take phones out of the equation; take a drink whenever a character says they can’t get reception, and finish it if, for no rational reason,...

Stephen King remains a hot commodity in Hollywood.
Universal has won a bidding war for the rights to the frightmaster’s latest tome, Fairy Tale, with Paul Greengrass attached to direct, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Greengrass, best known for his grounded Jason Bourne thrillers, will produce the adaptation with Greg Goodman.
Published in early September by Scribner, the book combines fantasy with coming-of-age themes to tell the story of a 17-year-old boy who discovers a portal to another world. Soon enough, the teen, accompanied by a very special dog, finds himself on a perilous adventure featuring deserted castles, child-eating giants, and as usual with King, unspeakable evil.
Universal’s acquisition puts the studio back in business with Greengrass, for which he made three of the four Bourne movies, as well as the acclaimed 9-11 drama United 93, Green Zone and News of the World.
