- Young teenage skateboarding enthusiasts regularly confuse him with American skateboarding legend Tony Hawk (misconstruing the 's in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game). So much so that after many emails sent to Tony Hawks asking for ollie advice, he appeared on Mastermind (1972) answering questions on Tony Hawk as his specialist subject.
- He was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2017 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to disadvantaged children in Moldova. He is a comedian and writer.
- Had a UK Top Ten hit in the mid 1980s with his band Morris Minor & the Majors (spoofing the Beastie Boys) singing The Stutter Rap. The Morris Minor was long-lived and loved, if somewhat unexciting, product from the British car industry.
- Is a noted amateur tennis player, and has lent his support to campaigns to promote grass roots tennis facilities.
- Since he was often doing the warm-up before the filming of a Red Dwarf (1988) episode, and because of his occasional guest appearances in the show, he was often called the "fifth Dwarfer".
