‘Cobra Kai’ Co-Creator Reveals His Rules for Successfully Rebooting Classic IP (Guest Column)

‘Cobra Kai’ Co-Creator Reveals His Rules for Successfully Rebooting Classic IP (Guest Column)
Ever since Cobra Kai premiered in 2018, I have heard some version of the following: “I can’t believe how much I loved your show, because whenever Hollywood attempts to bring back a classic movie franchise, it almost never works out.” Well, my co-creators Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald and I completely understand where that sentiment comes from. Having grown up in the 1980s, we are the target audience for many of the repackaged/revamped/rebooted movie franchises we grew up with. We know what it’s like to get lured in by nostalgia, only to feel let down by a cash-grab ...

‘Cobra Kai,’ ‘Pen15,’ ‘Hacks’ Bosses on Exploring Mentor-Mentee Character Dynamics

‘Cobra Kai,’ ‘Pen15,’ ‘Hacks’ Bosses on Exploring Mentor-Mentee Character Dynamics
The first meeting between caustic comedy doyenne Deborah (Jean Smart) and snarky Twitter-infamous writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) in “Hacks” doesn’t exactly go well.

Ava storms out after an exchange of withering putdowns, before Deborah screeches after her and offers her a job, closing the first chapter of the new HBO Max comedy and launching a complex mentor-mentee dynamic.

“Hacks” at its heart is about mentorship, a theme it has in common with a good number of its fellow comedy series nominees — namely Netflix’s “Cobra Kai,” Hulu’s “Pen15” and of course Apple TV Plus’ “Ted Lasso.”

Deborah and Ava simply don’t understand each other at the beginning of the series. The former thinks the latter’s jokes aren’t jokes (“Where are the punchlines?”), and the latter sees the former as a sad hack in cruise control. Gradually, they find common ground and “learn to love each other and work together,

‘Cobra Kai’ Cast And Creators On How Season 3 Sets Up The All Valley Tournament, And More – Contenders TV: The Nominees
Netflix’s Cobra Kai is ready to break out of the dojo and take center stage at the All Valley Tournament — just as its characters have done before — except this time, former mortal enemies Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) will kiai for the same team.

“In Season 2, Johnny and Daniel are in a really rough place,” creator Jon Hurwitz said during the Sony Pictures TV series’ panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees awards-season event. “They’ve been training a number of students each, and they thought they were doing the right thing, but it led to this explosive fight between everybody and the tragedy of Miguel’s [Xolo Maridueña] injury. So entering this season, these guys are looking inward and trying to figure out what they did wrong and trying to get it right moving forward. Each of them have journeys along the way

Cobra Kai Showrunners Surprised the Emmys Consider the Show a Comedy

Cobra Kai Showrunners Surprised the Emmys Consider the Show a Comedy
Cobra Kai was already no stranger to the Television Academy’s Emmy Awards, having been nominated in previous years for its karate-centric stunts. However, the recently announced list of nominees for the 73rd annual Emmy Awards yielded the richest prospective accolade yet, a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series. While the nod is clear mainstream validation for the unlikely Netflix-migrated franchise revival series, it does seem like an odd designation to the creative team of Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who don’t even consider the series a comedy.

The question of whether or not Cobra Kai is accurately categorized as a comedy is subjective, especially since the series operates as a drama—albeit bountifully buoyed by moments of comic relief and quixotic absurdity in certain characters. Yet, those comedic elements were necessary, since being a sequel to The Karate Kid movies—dramas, but a collective embodiment of

‘Cobra Kai’ Co-Showrunner on How Series Gives Expanded Recognition to ‘Karate Kid’ Franchise

‘Cobra Kai’ Co-Showrunner on How Series Gives Expanded Recognition to ‘Karate Kid’ Franchise
When you bring a multi-decade story about the British monarchy to Netflix, perhaps you have visions of Emmys dancing in your head, but it’s doubtful that creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg had the same expectations when they brought their sequel to The Karate Kid to fledgling streamer YouTube Red.

Cobra Kai did earn strong reviews and helped put YouTube Red on the map, but it wasn’t enough to keep the platform in the streaming scripted game, so the Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reunion moved to Netflix. Suddenly, Cobra Kai went from cult favorite to mainstream smash ...
