The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Director S. Craig Zahler made his feature debut with this excellent blend of the horror and Western genres, which pits a group of men – played by Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, and Patrick Wilson – against a group of cave-dwelling cannibals who have taken the wife of Wilson’s character captive. With a running time of 132 minutes, Bone Tomahawk takes its time showing the men’s journey to the tribe’s cave… but when the violence breaks out, it’s worth the wait. If you can stomach the gore.

While it may not be Friday, there is still plenty to celebrate this Tuesday the 13th, as we prepare to head back to Camp Crystal Lake with Scream Factory’s impressive Friday the 13th Collection, which brings together all the films from the original franchise, as well as the remake and Freddy vs. Jason as well. Scream Factory also put together a Blu-ray release of one of the most seminal films from my childhood this week—Terror in the Aisles—and they even are giving Motel Hell the Steelbook treatment on Tuesday as well.
Kino Lorber is also keeping busy this week with their special edition Blu for DeepStar Six as well as a SteelBook for Rawhead Rex, and for those of you who dig on The Exorcist sequels, both Dominion and Exorcist: The Beginning come home on Blu-ray this Tuesday, courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

For the second time this summer, authorities said, the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston has been vandalized.
According to the Boston Police Department, a 17-year-old suspect smashed a glass panel on the memorial on Monday. Witnesses said they saw the teen throw a rock at one of the memorial’s six 54-foot glass towers.
The teen, whose name has not been released, was then tackled by two bystanders who detained him until police arrived, according to authorities. He has been taken into custody and charged with the willful and malicious destruction of property.

Some films aren’t served very well by their titles. A name is just a name, but then again, first impressions can seal the deal. I didn’t see The Horror Show until about a week ago. My cursor has been looming over it in my Netfix queue for quite some time. The title is so ambiguous, that it could be anything. The key word is anything, and I will see anything with Lance Henriksen in it. He’s become the stuff of legends. He’s one of the few character actors that have...

Most fans of the Friday the 13th franchise have been contemplating recent rumors of a found footage approach for the forthcoming series re-reboot. And it’s probably safe to assume that most (at least diehards) fans weren’t overjoyed with the notion.
I too sat in that boat, scratching my head, hoping it couldn’t be true, figuring that if the idea did come to fruition, I might get my hands on some of the Kool-Aid just to avoid future disaster pics. It simply sounded like a perplexing idea... initially.
I berated the idea and those behind it. I seethed at the thought of a handi-cam Voorhees pic. I cursed the Hollywood gods. I may have even at one point soiled myself, losing all control of my bodily functions because, let’s face it: Found footage Jason sounds truly overtly outlandish.

If there was one genre that spawned countless knock-offs (some better than the films they were imitating, others not so much) it was the slasher film. Even some films that were touted as the greats amongst the sub-genre would be still hidden in the shadows of the films they were emulating. There’s a waterfall effect to these films that start with Psycho and fall through Black Christmas onto Friday the 13th. But within the sub-genre, a splintering could be found as well, creating a mutated family hierarchy of slasherdom. Every slasher film had to find some sort of way of setting itself apart from the other, by creating some sort of different villain who was unstoppable and creative in ways that kept bodies in seats.

The complete specs have been made available for Warner Bros. Entertainment's upcoming Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection Blu-ray box set, and it's a great day if you like your releases edited and slapped together.

This isn't an editorial lamenting the lack of uncut Friday the 13th movies that have never before been released. If we haven't seen excised footage by now, it's because, in all probability, it no longer exists. Yes, it would be nice to finally see Friday the 13th part 2 in all its uncut, Carl Fullerton glory, but it's probably never going to happen.

Even more pertinent today than it was back at its release in 1999, eXistenZ (Berlin Film Festival – Silver Berlin Bear winner) finds David Cronenberg exploring familiar thematics of humanity’s often disturbing relationship with technology. Over the course of the last decade our identities have become ever tied with our need to interact within the digital realm through social media and online video games that only continue to grow in popularity. On the cusp of the digital explosion within the mainstream consciousness, Cronenberg employs this obsessive digital escapism to jump into a nearing future where video games or biological contraptions that can transport the player to an alternative reality. Conceptually complex but blatantly fun, the feature is a counterpoint to the much more digitized and intrinsically serious film The Matrix, while operating as a throwback to its Canadian helmer’s horror roots, making full use of grotesque physical effects while continuously...

Another Friday has passed and that means two titles never before released on DVD have been announced by the Scream Factory. You may not remember The Vagrant but odds are you remember The Horror Show and have been wondering if it would ever see the light of day again.
The big title of this week’s Scream Factory announcement is unquestionably The Horror Show, or as it is known in some foreign circles, House III. I never understood how anyone came to the conclusion that film could be released as a third installment of the House franchise, but then I also have never understood how a movie about killer radioactive tree roots could be marketed as Troll 3.
In much the same way Hollywood gave us dueling volcano films (Volcano and Dante’s Peak) and dueling celestial doomsday flicks (Armageddon and Deep Impact), 1989 saw the release of dueling fright flicks about...

The horror genre has lost another director at way too young an age. The name James Isaac may not jump immediately out at you, but the man has delivered some of the most fun and obscure flicks of our generation.
Isaac has passed away at the age of just 51 due to a rare form of blood cancer. His work included The Horror Show, Jason X, Skinwalkers and Pig Hunt. Before taking the director's chair, he also had an incredible FX career, working on titles like Return of the Jedi, Gremlins, The Fly and House II: The Second Story.
The news was broken today on Twitter from Jason X scribe Todd Farmer, who wrote: "Rip Jimmy Isaac. A wonderful man, husband and father. I never tear up. I thought."
We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to extend our deepest of condolences to Isaac's friends, family, and constituents.

I love Jason X. It's an absolutely hilarious and ridiculous entry in the Friday The 13th franchise, and after Jason Takes Manhattan, it's my favorite in the series. As such, it's incredibly sad to discover that, Jim Isaac, the man behind Uber Jason in the space-set 10th film of the franchise, has just passed away.

Writer Todd Farmer took to Facebook/Twitter last night to write: "Rip Jimmy Issac. A wonderful man, husband and father. I never tear up. I thought." Farmer and Isaac collaborated on 2001's Jason X.
Isaac was apparently fighting some form of blood cancer; he was taken from us too soon.

I can’t think of anything more vapid than watching Sarah Connor and the dude from thirtysomething driving around cornfields for the good chunk of the running time of 1984′s Children of the Corn. I’m sorry but Malachai (Courtney Gains) yelling “Outlander!” doesn’t make fine art. Astonishingly, a majority of the sequels in the series have been pretty damn entertaining and a gas to watch. One of them being Ethan Wiley’s Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror, which was his first directing assignment since House II: The Second Story.
Jason Bene: Personally, I felt Children of the Corn was tepid and overrated. It is one of the few series’ where most of the sequels outshine the original. When Tom McLoughlin sat down to write and director Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, he watched all the prior films to see what worked and what didn’t.

After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.
Buy the Blu-ray or the regular DVD.

"The Thin Red Line" (1998)

Pig Hunt StillDirector: James Isaac.
Writers: Robert Mailer Anderson and Zack Anderson.
Pig Hunt was another 2010 Fangoria Filmfest entry and the film is currently being distributed by Lightning Entertainment on the Blockbuster-on-demand feature, with a DVD release forthcoming in September. I truly set out to make a definitive, objective list of the biggest cult films from the last five years today. However, pinning down a usable definition of "cult film" with a truly workable set of criteria was not just challenging, but nearly impossible. The one constant in definitions for cult films, however, was that they are movies that failed commercially, not just at the box office, but often in DVD sales, yet eventually found a successful second life after their initial release.
The best I could do was to spend way more hours than I expected to researching DVD sales, rental charts, and Netflix rankings from the last five years and combine those with my own anecdotal observations as a movie critic. There's no way to implement an algorithm to determine the standings (and actual figures are often very hard to come by), but in piecing together the evidence...

Cool news from the cool people over at Fangoria: this summer they will be distributing eight horror films in a multi-platform program with the label "FrightFest". Through partnering with Lightning Media these films will be made available on DVD, Video-On-Demand and Digital Download.
Even more cool: on the FrightFest website readers can vote which of these films should get a theatrical release in July. Right now the site just shows the selected titles but trailers, clips and featurettes should follow soon.
And the titles are not to be sneezed at: James Isaac's "Pig Hunt", Jaume Balagueró's "Fragile", Steven Hentges' "Hunger", Dean Francis' "Road Train", Darin Scott's "Dark House", Martin Weisz' "Grimm Love", Elio Quiroga's "No-Do: The Beckoning", and finally Michael Staininger's "Ligeia".
Something for everyone I'm sure you'll agree. Granted, some of these titles are quite old and well known already from the festival circuit (wow,...

Long-time horror staple Fangoria announced today that it has teamed up with multi-faceted distributor Lightning Media to launch a new film distribution entity named "Fangoria FrightFest," and plans to release eight horror feature films under the banner via a wide-ranging DVD, VOD and digital download deal, with fans additionally choosing one of the selected films for a theatrical distribution run.
Listed among the eight releases are two Latin horror titles: Fragile (finally!) from Rec and Rec 2 helmer Jaume Balagueró (word is there will be a third in that series - 'Rec Apocalypse,' but I digress), and 'The Haunting,' which is fronted by Elio Quiroga. Both directors hail from Spain, a treasure trove of great horror films the last decade.
A similar deal was announced recently between After Dark Films, Lionsgate, and Syfy under the 'After Dark Originals' moniker (read 'Adf Ties Not With Lionsgate & Syfy'). Unfortunately,...

Pig Hunt wrapped up some film festival coverage in 2009 by attending the Chicago Horror Film Festival and the film has been released already in the United Kingdom, but what of North America? The film, unfortunately, does not have North American distribution yet, despite being completed in 2008 in Boonville California. That is right, an American made horror film has been released in the United Kingdom before North America. How is that for globalization?
In the trailer there is much action, much bumbling, and some good laughs, as a group of rednecks terrorize some city-slickers. Check out the 3000 lb boar below.

If Frankenstein's monster represents man creating life without a woman and Dracula represents sleeping with a stranger, then the werewolf is no doubt the bestiality within man. We all have some form of a dark nature encoded in our genetic make-up, the beast within if you will. Even though Vampires seem to be all the rave nowadays, I was always a greater fan of the werewolf and find them sexier than those pale, angst ridden parasites. I can't really explain it and I'm sure my attraction to aggressive members of the opposite sex has something to do with it, but that's another story. In celebration of the epic Benicio Del Toro vehicle The Wolfman, which resurrects one of Universal Pictures' classic movie monsters, I took a look at a dozen of the sexiest werewolves in movies and TV. This is not a list about the best werewolf movies ever made,...

Generally speaking, I’m not really a fan of the whole “animals run amok” genre. There are a few exceptions to the rule, of course, but for the most part, I find them to be somewhat lacking in the horror department. However, having recently witnessed James Isaac’s enjoyable 2008 creature feature “Pig Hunt,” I’ve been secretly craving more animal-related mayhem. Enter Jeong-won Shin’s Korean monster flick “Chaw,” a self-described “dark comedy” about a man-eating boar and the poor schmucks who must contend with it. I’d almost completely forgotten about the film, that is, until I spied a small article about its upcoming Region 1 release over at 24 Frames Per Second. Here’s a lengthy synopsis, courtesy of YesAsia: Shock and fear wash over the quiet, peaceful town of Sameri when ecologist (Soo Ryeon) discovers the body parts of a girl in the mountains. Officer Kim Kang Su (Uhm...

Sean "The Butcher" Smithson here. Sometime scribe for these here pages at Dread Central, sometime horror host, sometime jungle explorer, sometime exorcist, even sometime astronaut. But this time I'm here reporting on what it's like to help organize events and program films for a horror convention. Or at least, what it was like for me at this particular con, CryptiCon Seattle 2009.
First off, there was an entire season of bi-weekly meetings, where we slowly zeroed in on having the vendors tables sold (it's this that mainly pays for the con expenses), hashed out which guests we'd like to invite (and then the rigmarole of who confirms, second choices, etc), and brainstormed ideas for panels and events. A lot of the things came together slow-as-molasses at first, then built to a torrent of hurry-up-and-get-it-done in the final weeks. For instance, two out of three of my tent pole films, which I...

We just found out at the last minute, but if you’re looking for something scary to do tonight, head on over to the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, where the ninth Brooklyn International Film Festival is in full swing. Tonight, the fest is offering a rare opportunity to catch Jim Isaac’s Pig Hunt on the big screen.
Pig Hunt, in which city slickers on the titular trip encounter vicious rednecks, cult babes and a huge, 3,000-pound, flesheating boar in the backwoods, plays tonight at 9 p.m. For tickets, click here, and see Pig Hunt’s official website here. Also showing tonight at the fest (at 6 p.m.) is Danny Kuchuck and John Weiner’s Cryptic, a Butterfly Effect-esque thriller in which a teenaged girl discovers she can communicate with her younger self via an old mobile phone, and tries to avert her mother’s death. You can order tickets for that one here.

Pig Hunt - A Dirthead Gothic
Yep, that’s what writer/producer calls his first film collaboration with director Jim Isaac. A Dirthead Gothic. This is a bulls-eye accurate description of Pig Hunt.
Part Deliverence, or Gator Bait, if you realllly want to go there. Part Jaws, or Razorback, if you realllly want to go there again. And part Return Of The Secaucus Seven, which if you’ve never been there you realllly should go.
This would be the easiest way to reference Pig Hunt to fellow movie geeks. You have crazy ass rednecks, hellbent on revenge. You have a crazy ass creature, roaming wild and lethal, unseen by it’s victims until it’s too late. You have a kinda crazy-ass group of good friends, together for a weekend getaway of partying, and maybe even a little soul searching.
More review and a trailer after the break!

Fango hosted the West Coast premiere of director Jim Isaac’s Pig Hunt last night at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA, and brought back a handful of photos (see them below), as well as an inherently warm feeling, given the festivities and the raucous audience response the flick received. Kicking off with an actual pig roast and hour-long set by Pig Hunt actor and celebrated blues musician Charlie Musslewhite, the event saw a packed courtyard and house.
On hand were Pig Hunt scripter Robert Mailer Anderson and director Isaac (pictured in first photo, who introduced the screening with Fango), plus cast members Travis Aaron Wade, Tina Huang, Howard Johnson Jr., Trevor Bullock, Rajiv Shah, Jason Foster, Nick Tagas and actor/Primus musician Les Claypool. Normally, May 5th is an excuse to get drunk. But this year's Cinco de Mayo was an excuse to get drunk and go on a Pig Hunt . This week, Jim Isaac's ( Jason X , Skinwalkers ) latest film had its West Coast premiere at the wonderful Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. The film centers around a group of friends caught between a rock and a hard place in the middle of the Northern California woods. In this case, the rock is a bunch of crazed hillbillies and the hard place is a monster pig with a taste for human flesh. I asked co-writer and producer Robert Mailer Anderson what inspired him to write the film. "My cousin [and co-writer] Zack and I come from a part of the world that unless you want to make a horror movie, no one will believe what happens there. There's a bunch of hogs up...

Well, it’s been seven years since Jason Voorhees chopped up foolish teens exclusively. Sure he shared screen time with Freddy Krueger in 2003’s crossover Freddy Vs Jason, yes he accumulated quite the body count in the film, yes it was a lot of fun, and yes the film was pretty damn successful, but diehard fans such as myself certainly missed that special “alone time” with Mr. Voorhees. • Screamkings Productions has announced that its new shocker Frat House Massacre (pictured) will have its first U.S. screening next Wednesday, February 4. It’ll be showing at New York City’s Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue) as part of the NewFilmmakers New York series.
The movie begins at 8 p.m., and director Alex Pucci and cast members Jon Fleming, Niki Notarile and Rane Jameson will attend and hold a Q&A. Scripted by Draven Gonzalez, Frat House Massacre is supposedly based on true events and is set in 1979, following two brothers as they join the Delta Iota fraternity and find themselves enmeshed in sex, drugs and brutal hazing that leads to torture and murder. Veteran Italian composer Claudio Simonetti provided the score. You can check out the movie’s official website here.
