Showrunner writer/director Issa López took over creative duties on HBO‘s acclaimed whodunnit thriller series “True Detective” from Nic Pizzolatto a few years back, and the results, a fourth season titled “True Detective: Night Country” were terrific (read our review). In spite of Pizzolato’s bitter sniping at the series—he spent a good amount of time throwing shade online at the series— ‘Night Country’ became the most viewed season of the series since the first installment and one of the most critically acclaimed tooo.

The only person who knows for certain what happens to Detective Navarro at the end of HBO’s True Detective: Night Country is Kali Reis herself.
“I have my own interpretation for Navarro, but I have not shared that with a soul,” Reis shared during the Deadline TV Contenders panel for the series.
Reis was joined by her co-star Jodie Foster, as well as showrunner Issa López, to discuss Night Country. While the ending may seem quite ambiguous, López assured that there is “an answer,” if audiences look close enough.
“I think that if you look very carefully, very carefully at the show and follow the lines very carefully, there’s an answer to what we saw at the end,” she told the audience. “But again, there’s a space for where your heart wants to live…and what you need to get out of it.”

World Boxing Council middleweight champ Kali Reis recently shared the screen with Jodie Foster in the HBO series True Detective: Night Country, and now Deadline reports that she is following up the success of that season of television by signing on to join previously announced cast members Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune), and Annabelle Wallis (Malignant) in the sci-fi thriller Mercy.
Mercy reunites Pratt with his Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov to tell a story that is “set in the near future when capital crime has increased” and follows “a detective (Pratt] who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.” The screenplay was written by Marco Van Belle (Arthur & Merlin).
Coming our way from Amazon MGM Studios, the film is expected to go into production this spring and is already scheduled to receive a worldwide theatrical release on August 15, 2025.

Jodie Foster is having a good year. The two-time Oscar winner returned to the attention of the academy for the first time since 1995 with a nomination for “Nyad.” Now, she and showrunner Issa López have revamped HBO’s flagging “True Detective” with the best entry since the show’s first season.
“True Detective: Night Country” stars Foster as an acid-tongue, spiky police chief who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Playing a detective will naturally harken viewers’ minds back to her turn as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar (“The Accused” being the other). It’s her meatiest role in years and Foster devours it.
Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) observed: “Our unsteady guiding hand through this darkness is Liz Danvers, played with icy perfection by Jodie Foster.

“True Detective” is back with a bang thanks to an electric fourth entry in the franchise from Issa López, who injects the crime series with darkness, humanity, and intrigue. This fourth edition of the HBO hit follows Jodie Foster as a police chief in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. She leads an investigation into the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Seasons two and three of “True Detective” weren’t received as rapturously as the first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but numerous critics have proclaimed that this fourth entry is as good if not better than season one.
Katie Rife (IGN) opined: “‘True Detective: Night Country’ is the best season of the series since the original. The horror sequences are especially good, and creator Issa López thoughtfully engages with the Alaska location without sacrificing the intrigue of a good detective story.”

Making art is a personal gamble. To create something worthwhile you often have to dig deep and mine whatever is going on inside yourself in hopes of producing an artistic product which has authenticity. Remi R.M. Moses’ short Saving Art, a hospital-set drama that follows a struggling father who is battling with the guilt he feels offering optimistic lies to his ailing son, is exactly that kind of project, a film born from Moses’ own personal experience in the wake of his five year old niece’s diagnosis with leukaemia. It’s an incredibly brave film to make but it delivers on that artistic gamble, telling a story that is emotionally-challenging but incredibly rewarding and cathartic. Dn was delighted to first catch the short at the London Film School’s graduate showcase earlier this year and invited Moses to join us for a conversation amidst the film’s festival...

Spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country" follow.
The dark, sleepy mining town of Ennis, Alaska, which is where the events of "True Detective: Night Country" are set, conceals many dark secrets beneath the ice. When a group of researchers go missing from their base, Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and the rest of the police force have enough reasons to suspect foul play, but nothing prepares them for what they find. The researchers are found frozen together with no clothes on, their limbs tangled and protruding in various directions, with expressions of pure terror stamped on their icy faces. It is a rather ugly thing to look at, and Danvers immediately describes it as a corpsicle, which is perhaps the most inventive way of referring to this horrifying spectacle.

Despite being a hit with viewers and critics, Jodie Foster‘s Chief Liz Danvers will not be returning for True Detective‘s fifth season. Foster starred in the fourth season, Night Country, alongside Kali Reis, and many deemed it a return to form for the HBO crime drama. With the show recently being renewed for Season 5, with Night Country creator Issa López back on board, some wondered if the series would drop its anthology concept and continue to follow Foster and Reis’ characters. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case, as Foster confirmed the show will continue with the anthology format. Speaking to Variety On the Carpet at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday night (March 10), Foster said her time on True Detective was “one and done,” reiterating, “It’s an anthology.” When asked if she was coming back, the Silence of the Lambs star straight up said, “No.” Night...

Now that “True Detective” is renewed for a fifth season and “Night Country” creator Issa López is returning to oversee it, many fans are wondering if the HBO series will continue to go the anthology route or possibly feature the return of “Night Country” characters played by Jodi Foster and Kali Reis. Foster weighed in on a possible return while speaking to Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv at the 2024 Oscars. Foster is a supporting actress nominee for “Nyad.”
Unfortunately for fans who loved watching Foster’s Chief Liz Danvers, it sounds like Lopez will be sticking with the anthology route for “True Detective” Season 5. Foster told Variety’s Marc Malkin that her time on the show was “one and done” and “it’s an anthology.” Asked if she’s coming back, Foster said point blank: “No.”

In honor of International Women’s Day, IndieWire is pleased to share its annual female filmmakers to watch list featuring a rising assortment of women writers and directors with some of the biggest projects of the year.
On the big screen, Theda Hammel’s Sundance breakout “Stress Positions” went on to become a leading title on this year’s New Directors/New Films lineup and is set to close out the festival. Alessandra Lacorazza’s “In the Summers” won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance, and also earned Lacorazza the Directing prize. Wonka will start streaming on Max next month, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said today, outlining what he called a strong streaming content slate highlighted Warner Bros. films, including one of last quarter’s most successful theatrical releases amid some disappointments.
Zaslav noted the date speaking to investors on a call after quarterly earnings, which were mixed as the company engineers a slow turnaround.
Also coming to Max from Warner Bros., he noted, are Aquaman And The Last Kingdom on Feb. 27, and Dune: Part Two “this spring,” said Zaslav — no date. The Dennis Villeneuve sequel opens next week after being pushed from its opening last year due to Hollywood strikes.
Wonka, which opened in December at $39 million, has passed $211 million at the domestic box office and $608 million worldwide. The musical fantasy origin story of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, is directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby.

True Detective staging a comeback both creatively and in the ratings wasn’t on our bingo card for 2024.
HBO on Thursday confirmed that it has picked up True Detective Season 5, mere days after the conclusion of True Detective: Night Country.

Issa López can't stop winning.
Season 4 of the hit HBO series "True Detective" was a massive risk, with show creator Nic Pizzolatto stepping back after three seasons to collect executive producer checks and whine on Instagram, while López took the series into a completely different direction with "Night Country" and navigated her predecessor's pettiness with the utmost grace. The risk paid off, big time, as "Night Country" became the most-watched season of the series yet, as well as the highest-rated on Rotten Tomatoes. So it's no surprise that HBO has wisely decided to renew the acclaimed drama for a fifth installment, with López returning for a new season under a multiyear overall deal with the company. Meaning, she will not only create season 5 of "True Detective," but she will also provide additional projects exclusive to HBO and the Max streaming platform. Excellent news for everyone who loves quality TV! Well, maybe not this guy. But he can go and suck on his sour grapes instead. For the rest of us, there's reason to be happy today as HBO has renewed True Detective for a fifth season, and has Night Country showrunner Issa López returning to oversee it again.
Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the story of troubled police officers investigating a confounding crime at a research station just outside a tiny, frozen Alaskan town as it plunges into weeks of darkness, has become the most watched season of the show and received plenty of critical praise to boot.
As for what the new season might cover, there's no word yet on whether it'll continue the story of Night Country or go the more familiar True Detective anthology route of a new setting and characters.

True Detective is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.
It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five of True Detective will be related to Night Country or will be an entirely new story.
However, what’s clear is that, despite creator Nic Pizzolato’s criticisms, López’s season has brought a return to form for the True Detective universe, becoming the most-watched season with 12.7 million cross platform viewers.
As part of López’s new multiyear deal, she will also create new content for HBO and Max.

Nic Pizzolatto, creator of the True Detective franchise, has been vocal about his distaste for Season 4 of the HBO drama that stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
Although Pizzolatto is credited as executive producer for the fourth season, he was not involved with the series that Issa López wrote, executive produced, and directed.

Nic Pizzolatto, the original creator of HBO’s “True Detective” franchise, published a bizarre Instagram post amid controversy generated in the aftermath of the show’s fourth season finale.
“True Detective: Night Country,” starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, ended its six-episode run on Feb. 18. Pizzolatto found himself in hot water after reposting comments to his Instagram story that slammed the show as “disrespectful and insulting” and a “hot mess.” “Night Country” was created by Issa López and marked the first run of “True Detective” episodes not written by Pizzolatto, although he was still credited as an executive producer.
In a new Instagram post, Pizzolatto addressed the fans hating on “True Detective: Night Country” by creating a post for them to channel their anger in the comments section. Nic Pizzolatto got his career as a storyteller started by writing short stories and a novel called Galveston, then made his move into television by writing a couple episodes of the first season of the AMC series The Killing. He wasn’t pleased with that experience, telling Nola.com that, “I want to be the guiding vision. I don’t do well serving someone else’s vision.” So he left The Killing as it headed into season 2 and went off to create his own show: True Detective, which found a home at HBO. Pizzolatto’s deal with HBO was renewed twice over the years as he crafted three seasons of True Detective, with his final deal with the network earning him $3 million a year. He was going to work on the network’s Perry Mason reboot, but had to let it go so he could focus on True Detective. Once True Detective season 3 wrapped up,...

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he wasn’t creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show – and he repeatedly let it be known that he wasn’t a fan of how the show was going in his absence. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season, and despite Pizzolatto’s objections, this season was able to draw in enough viewers that it became the most-watched season of the show, with Deadline reporting that it averaged 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, with 3.2 million checking out the season finale on the day of its release. So it’s no surprise to hear that López might be coming back for more True Detective.
