The story is about Laszlo Toth (Adrian Brody), who comes to America after World War II and his concentration camp experiences, to first work at his cousin’s furniture business and subsequently take on designing jobs, as he was a notable architect who worked in Poland before the war. When wealthy client Harrison (Guy Pierce) is appalled with Laszlo’s design work on a surprise home project, the architect runs away and becomes a drifter and a junkie. When that small project later turns out to be a sensation, Harrison reaches out to find Laszlo, then commissions a building from him, and as part of that new project helps...

Andor came in hot, shook the galaxy, and gave Star Wars fans something they didn’t know they needed – a raw, gritty story that didn’t play by Disney’s usual rules. Diego Luna crushed it as the rebel hero, and with Season 2 on the horizon, it’s looking just as explosive.

But here’s the twist: there’s no Season 3. Yes, the show is wrapping up after this next round, and the reason is as anti-Disney as it gets.
Why Diego Luna’s Star Wars masterpiece ends here, and it’s brilliantly bold Diego Luna in Andor | Credits: Lucasfilm
Andor isn’t playing the stretch-it-out forever game. After Season 2 drops in 2025, that’s it. No third season. No dragged-out storylines. Why? It’s simple – aging, ambition, and a refreshing anti-Disney move to avoid cheap cash grabs.
Here’s the deal: Andor was supposed to be five seasons long.

Like a rolling stone gathers no moss, Timothee Chalamet’s awards campaign for A Complete Unknown continues unabated. On Friday, NBC announced Chalamet will host the Jan. 25 edition of Saturday Night Live and serve as the night’s musical guest. The expectation is that Chalamet, who plays Bob Dylan in the new film, will perform Dylan songs on the broadcast.
Regardless of the playlist, Chalamet’s dual role on the broadcast will make some Saturday Night Live history. He’s among a select few non-professional singers or traditional musicians who have served as SNL hosts and performed as musicians on the same show, joining names like Lily Tomlin, Desi Arnaz, and Deion Sanders.
The SNL appearance is the latest high-profile stop on Chalamet’s press tour and awards campaign for A Complete Unknown. The actor has spent the last month promoting his work in James Mangold’s film – including a...

If you get a chance to see The Brutalist at a 35mm showing, please seize the opportunity. You will not regret it. The Brutalist was shot on 35mm film, and it’s visual gorgeousness is best seen that way. But any way you see it, The Brutalist is a masterpiece, a remarkable, moving drama with breathtakingly beautiful cinematography and starring Adrien Brody in one of the best performances of his career. Brody plays a Jewish-Hungarian modernist architect, working in the then-new “brutalist” style, who survived the Nazis’ brutality in his home country and now, post-war, immigrates to America. The architect arrives with the high hopes of many immigrants but soon is struggling to find his way in this new and very different land.

The 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations sent a shockwave through the Oscars race, boosting top contenders like Anora, A Complete Unknown, Emilia Pérez, and Wicked while dealing potentially trajectory-altering blows to Sing Sing, Angelina Jolie, and Denzel Washington.
Here’s what the SAG Awards nominations mean for the Oscars.
Anora is back – but maybe it never left
After the Golden Globes blanked Anora on Sunday, it felt like Sean Baker’s madcap comedy might not pay off its status as an early Best Picture frontrunner. But the actors’ guild gave the Neon film a jolt, scoring nominations for ensemble, Film Actress for Mikey Madison, and Film Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov. Madison was long considered a lock in the Gold Derby odds, and Anora hung on to the fifth position before the nomination announcement. But the Borisov nomination was a surprise (he had been in seventh place in the odds). The Russian star,...

As much of Los Angeles burns, it’s hard to think of anything else. But this morning, as Oscar nominations voting opened, SAG-AFTRA announced its nominees for the 31st SAG Awards, so we might as well take a look at what and who the acting guild’s nominating committee — made up of 2,500 members selected from the overall membership of some 160,000 — chose to highlight and ignore.
Not surprisingly, the guild, which leans more populist than most other awards groups, wholeheartedly embraced two acclaimed blockbusters: Universal’s Broadway adaptation Wicked, with a field-leading five noms (including one for stunts!), and Searchlight’s Bob Dylan drama A Complete Unknown, with four. Both films’ tallies included multiple individual acting noms — including far-from-assured noms for supporting actor Jonathan Bailey for the former, and supporting actor Edward Norton and supporting actress Monica Barbaro for the latter — as well as noms for best ensemble, which many treat...

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are always good for a significant surprise or two, and this year’s SAG Awards nominations were no different. On Wednesday, as the Screen Actors Guild announced its contenders for 2025 honors in film and television, several big names were rewarded — including Wicked, A Complete Unknown, and Emilia Perez — while some were left ignominiously behind. Ahead, the biggest snubs and surprises at this year’s SAG Awards.
Snub: Angelina Jolie (Maria) in Best Actress
Jolie’s Oscar candidacy has taken some serious hits over the last several days, and her snub by the Screen Actors Guild is the latest tough blow following her BAFTA Awards longlists omission and loss at the Golden Globes. The Maria star can still receive an Oscar nomination, of course – the BAFTA Awards and SAG Awards similarly snubbed Kristen Stewart, but she was still ultimately an Oscar nominee. But Jolie’s journey...

“Wicked” and “Shōgun” received the most nominations for the 31st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which were released Wednesday morning via press release after the in-person announcement was canceled due to the Los Angeles fires.
In the movie categories, “Wicked” scored nods for lead actress Cynthia Erivo, supporting actress Ariana Grande, supporting actor Jonathan Bailey, cast ensemble and stunt ensemble. Close behind was “A Complete Unknown,” with nominations for lead Timothée Chalamet, supporting actor Edward Norton, supporting actress Monica Barbaro and cast ensemble.
Recent Golden Globe winner Demi Moore strengthened her chances at an Oscar nomination with her lead performance nod Wednesday morning for “The Substance.” Pamela Anderson followed up her Golden Globe nomination with another surprise one for her lead performance in “The Last Showgirl.” In that highly competitive best actress category, notable snubs included Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”), Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”) and Golden Globe winner...

To design the monumental Institute depicted in “The Brutalist,” production designer Judy Becker channeled László Tóth, the film’s Holocaust-surviving, Hungarian architect played by Adrien Brody. This was crucial to understanding Tóth because his work symbolizes his lived history and struggle. Fortunately, Becker was already a fan of Brutalism, the minimalist architectural style that Tóth embraces for his passion project in Pennsylvania during the 1950s.
“I definitely became László,” Becker told IndieWire. “But then I always do a kind of method designing. I think through the characters and through their world. And, so, with László, it was multiplied many, many times because he was an architect. He was designing partly his own world and then the other things that you see as his creations in the movie.”
Becker’s first conversations with director Brady Corbet were about the towering and heavily symbolic Institute, which Tóth builds for industrialist Harrison Lee...

Elisabeth and Sue are “one” in The Substance, so it only makes sense that both of their portrayers, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, would receive equal treatment at the Oscars.
Moore crept into Gold Derby’s Oscar nominations predictions for Best Actress just over a week ago, and she officially fired up that race with a Golden Globe triumph on Jan. 5. She thanked Qualley in her acceptance speech “for being the other half of me that I couldn’t have done without” (watch below). Now it’s Qualley’s time to start thinking of a speech. She just leapt into our Best Supporting Actress Oscar lineup, where her 10/1 odds currently place her in fifth behind Globe winner Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) at 10/3, Ariana Grande (Wicked) at 4/1, Isabella Rossellini (Conclave) at 5/1, and Felicity Jones (The Brutalist) at 11/2.

The Hollywood Insider congratulates 'The Brutalist' for the three Golden Globes win in Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director for Brady Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody. Just before 2024 made its escape from our lives, ‘The Brutalist’ (2024) from actor turned director Brady Corbet illuminates cinemas in glorious VistaVision to tell the story of fictional Brutalism architect László Tóth and the integration of his work into the American landscape. Transcending many other historical films of a similar nature, ‘The Brutalist’ positions itself as this past year’s epic cinematic experience. Its three and a half hour long runtime is not something to be scared away by as the script by Brady Corbet and his partner Mona Fastvold wastes no time in moving the story forward and developing the characters. When Brady Corbet accepted the Golden Globe for best dramatic film on behalf of The Brutalist on Sunday, the 36-year-old American director made some off-the-cuff remarks about creative freedom.
“I just wanted to leave everyone with something to think about: Final-cut tiebreak goes to the director,” Corbet told the crowd, in what was his second speech of the night after winning best director earlier in the evening. “It’s sort of a controversial statement. It shouldn’t be. It shouldn’t be controversial at all.”
“Final cut tirebreak” is the idea that if a director and a financier disagree over a creative choice on a film, the director’s vision should be the one to prevail. It’s a contractual privilege that A-list Hollywood directors like Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg enjoy, but that most filmmakers don’t have, especially in the U.S.

While preparing for his role as a titan of industry in Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” Guy Pearce had a specific image in his imagination. It was of a trophy hunter standing next to his prized kill, a lion or tiger or rhino, so proud of himself for having tamed nature.
“I was struck by the idea of recognizing something beautiful in the world and then feeling the need to destroy it,” Pearce said. “Or the need to control it as a way to feel less powerless. The psychology behind that is so fascinating and horrible to me.”
Pearce’s character in the film, the stately-named Harrison Lee Van Buren, is one of the year’s most intriguing creations. He’s not a trophy hunter in the literal sense, but a rich, immoral rogue who’s also dashing and cultured within the film’s 1950s Pennsylvania setting.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind awards season’s most talked-about movies continues with Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, the A24 epic that won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival and on Sunday became an Oscar Best Picture front-runner by winning Best Director, Best Actor – Drama for star Adrien Brody and Best Picture – Drama honors at the Golden Globes.
Corbet’s post-World War II drama, co-written with his partner Mona Fastvold, delves into the story of László Tóth (Brody), a Hungarian-Jewish visionary architect. After surviving the Holocaust, he emigrated to the U.S. to begin a new life while awaiting the arrival of his wife, Erzsébet (Felicity Jones), trapped in Eastern Europe with their niece Zsófia (Raffey Cassidy) following the war. The film also stars Joe Alwyn, Stacy Martin and Emma Laird, with Isaach de Bankolé and Alessandro Nivola.

Last night’s two top Golden Globe winners, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez and A24’s three-and-a half-hour epic drama The Brutalist, were also big winners in terms of Oscars momentum. The former won Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical Globe along with three other victories from a record ten nominations. The latter took the all-important Best Motion Picture – Drama Globe and two other major awards including Best Actor-Drama for Adrien Brody and Best Director for Brady Corbet.
The first big test of strength in the two-month stretch to the March 2 Academy Awards, last night’s Globes results are impressive and perhaps indicative that either Emilia Pérez or The Brutalist will be the ultimate Best Picture Oscar winner. That is if they can ride this horse for another eight weeks.

Following Golden Globe wins for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director, The Brutalist filmmaker Brady Corbet offered some food for thought Sunday: “Final cut tie-break goes to the director.”
This, said Corbet, is “sort of a controversial statement,” though “it shouldn’t be controversial at all.”
The Brutalist proved one of tonight’s big repeat winners, setting the stage for what may be a big night at the Oscars. Still, Corbet recalled that there was a time he was told his film was “undistributable…that no one would come out and see it.”
Corbet “was told the film wouldn’t work, and I don’t resent that,” he reflected. “But I want to use this as an opportunity to lift up filmmakers — not just my fellow nominees, but all the extraordinary directors in this room.”

The Brutalist writer-director Brady Corbet pushed for more autonomy for filmmakers while accepting the award for best drama movie at the 2025 Golden Globes.
“I’m incredibly moved,” said Corbet, who also won for best film director earlier in Sunday’s ceremony. He then quipped, “I prepared one speech, not two.”
As it turned out, Corbet still had plenty on his mind. “I just wanted to leave everyone with something to think about: Final-cut tiebreak goes to the director,” he told the crowd. “It’s sort of a controversial statement. It shouldn’t be. It shouldn’t be controversial at all. I was told that this film was un-distributable. I was told that no one would come out and see it. I was told the film wouldn’t work.”

The 2025 Golden Globes shook things up on Sunday night.
The ceremony, hosted by roaster extraordinaire Nikki Glaser (nimbly righting the ship after last year’s Jo Koy-helmed debacle), featured showdowns of epic proportions with heavyweights like The Brutalist and Conclave competing in dramatic film categories, while Emilia Pérez, Anora, and Wicked squared off in the musical/comedy slate.
When the dust settled, Emilia Pérez, which came into the evening with a record 10 nominations, led the way among films with four awards: Best Comedy/Musical, best non-English Film, supporting actress Zoe Saldaña, and Best Song (“El Mal”). The Brutalist tallied three awards: Best Drama, director Brady Corbet, and lead actor Adrien Brody. As expected, Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) received the supporting actor trophy, and Wicked won for cinematic and box-office achievement.
But without a clear Oppenheimer-esque favorite, things got interesting. Demi Moore brought down the house after her surprise...

And the Golden Globes are a wrap. Overall, it was a fast-paced show, with Emilia Pérez, Shogun, Hacks and The Brutalist the night’s big winners. There were some nice surprises, with Sebastian Stan getting an unexpected nod for A Different Man and Demi Moore winning for The Substance. Otherwise, efficiency was the philosophy of the night, although outside of Vin Diesel’s pointed “Hey Dwayne,” there weren’t many memorable moments, with host Nikki Glaser’s opening monologue playing fairly safe outside of one zinger aimed at Ben Affleck that got some decent laughs. After host Jo Koy got into some hot water for a few very mild jokes last year, Glaser avoided anything too controversial. Political jokes were kept to a minimum (outside of a mild dig at Rfk Jr), with even P Diddy only getting the mildest treatment. If anyone was expecting a repeat of her Roast of Tom Brady jokes,...

In The Brutalist, enjoying lots of appreciative chat as Awards Season prepares to kick off with the Golden Globes, Joe Alwyn plays Harry, a rich industrialist’s son, with a performance he says was inspired by president-elect Donald Trump and his offspring.

What that means: the Netflix musical about a drug kingpin who undergoes gender transition surgery is now expected to win three trophies overall, including supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña and non-English film. That would tie Emilia Pérez with Anora, though the film would still be one behind The Brutalist, which is predicted to lead with four Golden Globes.

Awards season is officially ready to launch. On Sunday night, the Golden Globes will kick off the race to the 2025 Oscars with the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The star-studded event will air live on CBS linear television and stream live on Paramount+ for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers.
The Golden Globes, routinely referred to as “Hollywood’s party of the year” (so much so that the group has trademarked that phrase), are the largest awards event in the world dedicated to honoring the year’s top projects in film and television. The Golden Globe Awards also kick off the televised portion of awards season, getting out in front of other ceremonies like the Critics Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Oscars.
Here’s everything about the 2025 Golden Globes, from this year’s nominations to the show date and time.

Sunday Am Writethru: After Saturday Am update. The first weekend of 2025 — which sources have declared “a normal year” — is eyeing a grand estimated total of $105.5M for all movies, which is certainly better at +23% than the first weekend of 2024 which did $85.9M, per Box Office Mojo. Overall, it was a blasé frame of holiday carryovers without any new wide releases: one of three currently in 2025 along with Oct. 31 and Dec. 12.
The first weekend currently ranks second on a post-covid basis to that of 2023 when the holdover success of Avatar: The Way With Water and M3GAN delivered a $106.2M marketplace. We did not hear of any major theater closures (yet) due to Winter Storm Blair, which is expected to impact over 60 million people, per CNN, from the Plains to the East Coast with a mix of snow, ice and blizzard conditions. For fun, just to juxtapose that number next to the moviegoing public,...

How the team behind the Oscar contender managed to make a three-hour-plus film feel significantly shorter.
David Jancso is so close with filmmakers Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold that the editor has been by the couple’s side for several major milestones over the last decade, from cutting Corbet’s debut film The Childhood of a Leader and Fastvold’s 2020 feature The World to Come to witnessing the early days of Corbet and Fastvold’s daughter’s life in the pair’s Paris apartment.
“I understand what Brady wants, and his visionary approach to filmmaking is something that you just don’t forget,” Jancso tells Gold Derby.
Neither is The Brutalist, Corbet’s acclaimed new film and one of the season’s top awards contenders, with seven Golden Globe Awards nominations including Best Drama, Best Director for Corbet, and Best Screenplay for Corbet and Fastvold. Set in the aftermath of World War II,...
