Naomi Kawase was born on May 30, 1969 in Nara, Japan. She is a director and writer, known for Sweet Bean (2015), Still the Water (2014) and The Mourning Forest (2007). She was previously married to Takenori Sentô.

Graduated from the Osaka School of Photography in 1989, where she worked as a lecturer the next four years.
Enjoys playing basketball.

After being left by her parents, she was raised by her grandparents. She digested those experiences in her movies Embracing (1992) and Sky, Wind, Fire, Water, Earth (2001).
