Olivia Hussey has died. An actor with a 60-year-career to her name, Hussey (later known as Olivia Hussey Eisley) broke out into international attention with her very first major film, starring in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film adaptation of Romeo And Juliet. Six years later, Hussey helped create the template for...

1974 was a big year for horror. Just months after William Friedkin’s juggernaut The Exorcist shocked audiences around the world, two films electrified the genre and sent it careening in a new direction. While Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre remains one of the most viscerally terrifying films of all time, it’s sister proto-slasher Black Christmas has arguably become more relevant. The film follows Jess (Olivia Hussey) and her friends as they’re targeted by a mysterious man known as Billy (Albert J. Dunk) who hides in the attic of their sorority house. In addition to sparking the slasher revolution, Bob Clark’s film is important for another reason.
Released just one year after the historic Roe v. Wade decision granted US women the right to safe and legal abortion, Black Christmas features a main character who makes the choice to terminate her pregnancy despite her boyfriend’s strenuous—and threatening—objections.

Black Christmas (1974) is a chilling, early entry in the slasher genre that set the stage for many of the tropes and conventions we now associate with horror films. Directed by Bob Clark, the movie is credited with being one of the earliest examples of a slasher, predating Halloween by several years. The story takes place in a sorority house where a group of college girls is celebrating the holidays. Unbeknownst to them, a mysterious killer lurks in the shadows, ready to terrorize them in a way that feels both personal and deeply unsettling. What follows is a harrowing sequence of murders, a tense investigation, and a haunting conclusion that still leaves viewers with a sense of dread long after the credits roll.

It’s time for another reverse Uno card of a video. When we are looking at something standing the Test of Time, its usually through the lens of “is it still good” or “is it still impactful”? The holy grail or Mount Rushmore of slashers have an easy answer to that. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and A Nightmare on Elm Street are all unimpeachable in their legacy and entertainment value but what about their sequels and remakes? Weve looked at a few of them either through this show seeing if they are still fun as well as Andrew or Lance defending some of them in our Black Sheep videos. Rob Zombie is pretty divisive in general, but he had the extremely difficult task of making not only the remake of John Carpenter’s Halloween in 2007 but also a sequel to that in 2009. He was told he could...

Heavy spoilers ahead for the "Superman & Lois" finale.
The era of the Arrowverse is officially over, as is the era of DC superheroes on The CW. It's fitting, then, that what started with "Smallville" telling the origin of Superman over 20 years ago would end with "Superman & Lois" bringing the story of the Man of Steel to a definitive end.
Unlike most shows in the Arrowverse, "Superman & Lois" didn't take on the form of an origin story. Instead, the show followed Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) after he had already spent 20 years on the job as the Man of Tomorrow, married Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), and had two teenage sons. By the time we meet him, this version of Superman has already accomplished nearly everything you'd expect the character to go through in a movie trilogy, having even defeated Lex Luthor (Michael Cudlitz) and sent him to jail before the start of the series.

Sharing a meal with family and friends is all well and good as far as Christmas celebrations go, but for the film lovers among us, it's the perfect time to hibernate in front of the television with a cozy blanket and mug of hot chocolate with a watch-list of some of the greatest Christmas films ready to go. While not every cinephile finds satisfaction out of the genre, it's a time so magical that everything from horror films, '80s action, and even German Impressionism can all find a place in Christmas films.
Ranging from the corny and ridiculous to generational classics, Christmas films have introduced to us some of cinema's most memorable characters. The traditional George Baileys and multiple Santa Clauses hit us in the feels and remind us of the season's merriment, while the Christmas-adjacent Gizmos and John McClanes grant us the space to clench, laugh, and gasp with festive cheer.

Colin Chilvers, a pioneering, Oscar-winning Hollywood visual effects artist who created movie magic for Superman, apocalyptic scenarios and even The Who’s Tommy, died November 19 in Fort Erie, Ontario, where he lived. He was 79.
His death was first reported Wednesday by the news station 101.1 FM in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Among Chilvers’ more memorable feats were the effects that gave Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder the illusion of flying in Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman, work that had him share in a team Oscar for Visual Effects.
In 1986, Chilvers created the dazzling trickery that allowed Michael Jackson to defy gravity by leaning forward 45 degrees with no visible means of support in the music video for “Smooth Criminal.” Chilvers directed the video, along with various other Jackson video collections.
Chilvers’ post-Superman credits from the ’80s through the 2000s also included Superman 2 and Superman 3, Bride of Chucky, X-Men and K-19: The Widowmaker.

Hollywood visual effects pioneer Colin Chilvers, who earned a Special Achievement Academy Award in 1979 for making Christopher Reeves as Superman fly, has died. He was 79.
Chilvers died Tuesday in Fort Erie, Ontario, according to his nephew, Chris Corbould, whose own VFX credits include Inception, The Dark Knight Rises and James Bond franchise movies like No Time to Die and Spectre.
“I am forever indebted to Colin as he instigated the start of my own career in special effects when he invited me onto the set of Tommy in 1974 when I was 16 years old and inspired me to make a career in the film industry,” Corbould told The Hollywood Reporter.

Pressman Film, the indie producer founded by the late Edward Pressman and behind classics from Wall Street to American Psycho, has broken new ground in film financing with the first slate listed on popular investment platform Republic.
The offering launched Sept. 5 with a goal of $1.5 million to develop a minimum of six new projects. It’s raised over $1.7 million and could see additional coin by the time it closes on Friday.
This is not crowdfunding but equity investment from — so far — 295 investors with Pressman offering rather generous returns if a project does make it into production as the indie seeks to create a brand and attract a pool of followers and potential financiers going forward. Investors can also reap premiums at other milestones including a portion of Pressman Film’s producing fee and a portion of their share of the net profits.

The life of the actor who played Superman before becoming paralysed, told by his own children, is poignant enough so why the cod-mythic animations and pompous music?
‘You’ve got me?” splutters Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) in the 1978 Superman: The Movie, after her caped saviour (Christopher Reeve) scoops her up in his arms as she plunges from a skyscraper. “Who’s got you?”
It’s a question answered by the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. When Reeve was paralysed from the neck down after a fall while horse-riding in 1995, it necessitated a cultural reckoning with illusory images of strength and infallibility. On the day of the accident, Reeve flatlined twice; doctors estimated that his chances of living until the evening were 50/50. Not only did he survive but he went on to be an inspiring bipartisan campaigner in the areas of spinal injury and stem cell research. Behind the scenes,...

Movies from the DC Universe as of late may not have been some of its best ones to date, resulting in either critically panned, or brutally underrated projects that performed terribly badly at the box office. But this wasn’t always the case, as this superhero universe is also credited with giving fans some of the best and most comically accurate films of all time.
Now that James Gunn is soon about to launch his revamped version of the respective super-verse with a full-blown rebooted cast, it seems like the perfect time to go down memory lane and reminisce all those masterpieces that DC gave us over the years – since we probably won’t be seeing all those iterations of the superheroes that we grew up watching return anytime soon.
That said, here’s a list of the 10 highest-rated movies from this super-verse, ranked according to their respective ratings on IMDb.

Writer/director Ti West has been a household name in the horror genre for a long time, recently directing the stylish and impressive trilogy of "X," "Pearl," and "MaXXXine." But 15 years ago this month, West rocketed onto the scene with "The House of the Devil," which was technically his third feature but unquestionably became his breakout calling card. I remember there being tremendous excitement about the film at the time in the blogosphere -- this was long before I worked for /Film, but as an avid reader of the site, I recall multiple articles singing its praises, with this one being perhaps the most detailed and effusive. I didn't dabble too much in horror back then, but I clocked the enthusiasm in the community and tucked it away in the back of my mind.

Superman & Lois is currently in its fourth and final season, standing out as one of the most successful Arrowverse series, even though it wasn’t directly part of the cinematic universe that the CW aimed to establish over the past decade.
Initially, the show was expected to have a longer run, as Elizabeth Tulloch confirmed in her interview with ComicBook. However, circumstances changed when Nexstar acquired the CW, resulting in the cancellation of several shows.
The show’s fate was uncertain until it was finally confirmed that the fourth season would be its last, resulting in significant budget cuts that restricted the cast size and reduced the number of episodes. At least fans are grateful that the series has been given the chance to conclude its story.

Conceived by Barbara Pyle and media mogul Ted Turner, Captain Planet was an ecological hero way ahead of his time. The animated series ran for years with some nifty design work by Neal Adams and his Continuity Associates. Each episode featured an adventure and a lesson (of course). It endeared itself to a generation of viewers and remained an enduring figure from the 1990s.
Now, Warner Home Entertainment has released Captain Planet the Complete Franchise, with 41 hours and 31 minutes of environmental goodness. For silly legal reasons, the show has two titles evenly split among its six seasons: Captain Planet and the Planeteers (animated by Dic) and The New Adventures of Captain Planet (animated by Hanna-Barbera) for the final three seasons.

Horror movies might be known more for death scenes than anything else. For that reason, pinning down the best horror movie death should be challenging — but it isn’t. One obscure, eerie Yuletide scene from the 1970s takes the cake.
The best horror movie death involves a bizarre weapon
When people think of the great murder set pieces, they often think of slasher sequences like the shower scene from Psycho and the time Kevin Bacon’s throat got slit in Friday the 13th. One of the more underappreciated slashers is 1974’s Black Christmas. It’s not forgotten, but it never inspired the sort of fandom as A Nightmare on Elm Street or Child’s Play. Regardless, Black Christmas has some incredible tension and tantalizing unanswered questions.
The premise revolves around an unseen, unknown assailant who breaks into a sorority house during the Christmas season and starts living in the attic. One by one,...

Hadn’t the Salkinds done enough damage to the Man of Steel? And yet, as we all know, a fourth installment in the Superman series did indeed hit theaters…with a nearly unmatched thud.

Turns out, the series would be facing its greatest battles yet, with the rights being passed to another studio, its star only signing on so he could finance another movie altogether and the budget getting chopped in more than half!

Turns out, the series would be facing its greatest battles yet, with the rights being passed to another studio, its star only signing on so he could finance another movie altogether and the budget getting chopped in more than half!
And so, let’s suit up one more...

James Gunn is setting up DC Comics for a great future ahead with releases already lined up for 2025. Over the last couple of years, Dcu has faced a couple of upsets with the departures of various actors from the franchise. Henry Cavill was one individual who pulled out of DC’s roster due to a possible scheduling conflict.

However, Gunn had announced that David Corenswet would be assuming his position as Superman, back in 2023. The CEO of DC Studios went straight into business and announced that they plan on releasing a new Superman movie in 2025. But along with all the announcements come a slew of rumors that Gunn has been debunking.

Considering the first two Superman movies made over $500 million at the worldwide box office, it was absolutely no surprise that a Superman III would take flight. Besides, it was promised in the closing credits of Superman II!
With the success of Superman and its sequel, superhero movies were in the earliest iteration of franchise mode. In short: strong box office numbers guaranteed another movie, no matter how bad it could possibly turn out. And Superman III is just about as bad as it could possibly turn out, generally ranking among the worst superhero sequels ever and a prime example of what happens to a series’ reputation when things go wrong with the script, cast and, hell, even the opening credits sequence!
So, let’s go from Superman to Super-Mean to Super-Machine as we find out: What Happened to This Movie?!

Plot: A deep dive into the life of Christopher Reeve, from his overnight stardom as Superman through to his life after the tragic accident which left him a person with quadriplegia.
Review: When I heard Sundance would be showing a documentary about the life of Christopher Reeve, I correctly assumed that it wouldn’t leave a dry eye in this house whenever it was screened. Indeed, as the premiere screening wound up, the sobs from the audience were pronounced, and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is certainly a heartbreaking experience. Now that the film is getting a limited theatrical run (from Fathom Events), with an expansion rumoured for later this month, fans everywhere will get to shed a tear and be inspired by this icon.

From rising star to champion for others, Christopher Reeve blazed a trail of hope. Directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui tell Reeve’s inspiring story in Super/Man, documenting the challenges he faced and the good he created in the world.
We learn of Reeve’s journey from a struggling young actor’s breakthrough role as the original Superman to his paralyzing horseback riding accident. Through it all, Reeve’s dedication to others despite his own struggles makes him the embodiment of heroism.
Reeve started simply, training as a theater actor but landing the role of a lifetime as Superman in 1978. With Richard Donner’s film a phenomenon, Reeve became a star yet retained his humility. When a tragic accident left him paralyzed, Reeve could have faded but instead fought to help others.

While his films have ranged from the sublime to the atrocious, there’s no denying the impact Brian De Palma has had on cinema. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
De Palma began his filmmaking career directing underground features shot on a shoestring, many of which starred a young Robert De Niro. He came into his own with the Hitchcock-inspired thriller “Sisters” (1973), starring Margot Kidder as a pair of killer Siamese twins. The Master of Suspense would serve as a muse to De Palma throughout his career, influencing such films as “Obsession” (1976), “Dressed to Kill” (1980), “Blow Out” (1980) and “Body Double” (1984) both in style and substance.
He enjoyed his first box office success with “Carrie” (1976), an adaptation of Stephen King’s chilling novel about a shy teenager (Sissy Spacek) with telekinesis. The film brought Oscar nominations to Spacek and Piper Laurie...

A little while back, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. This summer, the Mouse House released an uncommonly bold MCU movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, which sported an R-rating, and has done blockbuster business. Many are wondering if perhaps this could have the way for Disney to tackle some adult fare, but it wouldn’t be the first time, and maybe now is the time to bring back Touchstone Pictures.
So, what’s Touchstone Pictures...

The year that brought us the classic Alien also gave us dozens of other horror movies – some great, others less so. We head back to 1979:
“The horror… the horror,” a shadowy Marlon Brando intoned in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, finally released in 1979 after an infamously protracted shoot. Brando’s Colonel Kurtz was referring to the haunting fallout from the Vietnam war in those final, whispered words, but he could just as well have been reading off a newspaper listing of the numerous genre movies released that year.
Among 1979’s biggest hits was, of course, Alien, Ridley Scott’s prowling space horror that elevated its monster-on-a-ship premise into something unforgettably visceral and disturbing. So disturbing that it launched a franchise that is still going 45 years later; as these words are being typed, Fede Alvarez’s sidequel Alien: Romulus is about to hatch in cinemas.

Hit-Monkey continues to walk the vigilante path less traveled. While other heroes trade banter in slick suits, this show honors the violent grit pioneered by films like Oldboy and martial arts classics like Drunken Master. Dark humor cuts through the carnage, recalling Tarantino at his pitch-black best.
Season 2 delves deeper into what fuels a life of violence. Monkey confronts his own “family business” legacy through a crisis of conscience glimpsed in similarly nihilistic animation like Primal. Bryce’s redemption arc nods to fallen antiheroes from The Dark Knight to Breaking Bad. New characters like Eunice bring levity, further separating this show from the gleaming MCU while expanding representation in the genre.
Through intricately animated mayhem and nuanced character journeys, Hit-Monkey remains that rare comic adaptation unafraid to color outside the lines. While some question its direction, true aficionados see how honorably it carries the torch of transgression lit by mangas...

Up, Up, and Away! Truth, Justice, and The American Way. These immediately cause comic fans to conjure up one specific character, The Big Blue Boy Scout. Superman. Heralded as the one that started the superhero boom in comics way back in 1938, there have been a lot of live-action versions over the years. Last year’s Flash movie highlighted some of the more popular ones and even one that had never actually been put on film. With James Gunn taking over the Dcu and using a new Superman film as the starting line, what can we expect from the upcoming film?

A wide range of actors, from Kirk Alyn to Henry Cavill, have donned the Kryptonian cape of Superman. But a large section of DC fans hail Christopher Reeve as the definitive version of the character. Despite Henry Cavill’s fame in the role, unlike Reeve, his story ended abruptly when James Gunn took over DC Studios.

Since 1938, Superman has dominated countless comic books, inspired a legion of fans, and appeared on the big and small screen to varying degrees of success. Adorned in blue tights and a red cape, the Man of Steel is a traditional hero in every sense of the word: morally sound, full of hope, and never too busy for any task, great or small. He's a Boy Scout who stands for truth, justice, and the American Way, an ideology that contrasts sharply against today's darker generation of heroes like Batman and Spider-Man.
But that hasn't stopped producers from trying their hand at blockbuster success with the big guy. Richard Donner's "Superman: The Movie," the grandfather of all superhero films, remains the most successful entry, critically and commercially, while Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" and Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" trilogy divided critics and audiences alike. Soon, James Gunn steps to the plate with "Superman Legacy,...

Forty years after the character’s first appearance on the print pages of Action Comics, Superman made his biggest jump yet in terms of making an impact with the live-action set of four movies starring Christopher Reeve. By all accounts, Christopher Reeve was one of the kindest and most giving men in the business, something that so many of his co-stars and friends gave back. For those lucky enough to work alongside him on screens both big and small – even just once – it will always be a special moment. This holds true even in far lesser fare, as Superman III co-star Annette O’Toole remembers just how giving Reeve was even off the set.

Christopher Reeve’s Superman is most people’s definitive portrayal of the character. Richard Donner successfully balanced the superheroic aspects of the character along with the nerdy charm of his alter ego Clark Kent. The success of the first film led to Reeve returning for three sequels.

Jan Haag, who a half-century ago founded the landmark Directing Workshop for Women at the American Film Institute, has died. She was 90.
The remarkable Haag, who also was an actress, painter, poet, novelist, playwright, writer of travel stories and creator of needlepoint canvases, some of which required hundreds of hours to complete, died Monday in Shoreline, Washington, according to the AFI and the Mb Abram agency.
Haag had directed dozens of educational films for the John Tracy Clinic and the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare when she became the first woman accepted into the Academy Intern Program at the AFI in 1970, three years after it was founded by George Stevens Jr.
She was assigned to Paramount’s Harold and Maude (1971), directed by Hal Ashby, then joined the AFI staff in 1971, and among her duties was to administer the nonprofit’s film grant program funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
