In the 13 years since System of a Down last released an album of skittery punk-metal, frontman Serj Tankian has challenged himself creatively with orchestral compositions, jazz records and rock outings. Lately, though, he’s found the most gratification in scoring movies. In the past five years, he’s written music for six films and a video game. His latest is a delicate, otherworldly mood piece for Spitak, a disaster film about the immediate aftermath of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that crumpled northern Armenia in 1988, claiming deaths in the range of 25,000 to 50,000 people and up to 130,000 injuries.

Final Update, Monday 4:49 Pm Pt: Across the Top 10 major studio releases internationally there’s reason for some holiday cheer. This weekend’s figures are up 19.4% over last frame with The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies leading the pack at $89M, plus strong perfs from Exodus: Gods And Kings in new key markets and the Night At The Museum finale. Still, that result is down from last year, largely due to the impact that Frozen was having on the season with a $50.5M take in the comparable frame. Five Armies in the estimates is also about 9.3% off from Smaug’s performance last year, but there are those nasty currency fluctuations to take into account.
Still, it a big weekend for local titles. Last frame’s Indian release Pk added Bollywood flair to the international box office with an offshore haul of $14.3M for a global cume of $61.46M.

One thing that Russian cinema has shown a definite affinity for in recent years is the big war epic. Some have been done in period settings, some have been done blending other genres, some have been at sea. And coming soon will be Alexander Kott's Brest Fortress, a historically based epic starring Andrey Merzlikin from Bimmer and Newsmakers.
The film tells the story of the heroic defense of the Brest fortress in Belarus assaulted by the Nazi in the morning of June 22, 1941. Having been totally outnumbered in soldiers and weapons the citizens of Brest fought to the bitter end for 29 endless days.
The events that took place in the first days of the invasion are depicted with documentary accuracy, the characters are real.
The film features unique footage of that time and the few veterans survived in the battle are involved.
The details will sail you to the big...
