Queen Latifah: 'Black Women Have Been Equalizing for Years and Years, From Hatshepsut to Kamala Harris'

Queen Latifah: 'Black Women Have Been Equalizing for Years and Years, From Hatshepsut to Kamala Harris'
Queen Latifah is using everything in her arsenal to bring the titular Robyn McCall to life on CBS’ The Equalizer (Sundays, 8/7c).

The former rapper and singer relies on her musicality when it comes to fight sequences, and her sense of justice as someone who was bullied as a kid growing up in Newark, New Jersey. But when it comes to being the first Black woman to take the lead in the franchise’s history, on either the big or small screen, Latifah (née Dana Owens) is tapping into her genetic memory.

‘The Equalizer’ Pauses Production After Positive Covid-19 Test

‘The Equalizer’ Pauses Production After Positive Covid-19 Test
Exclusive: CBS’ The Equalizer, coming off its high-profile premiere after the Super Bowl, has suspended filming.

According to sources, a positive Covid-19 test result was produced yesterday as part of the show’s rigorous safety protocols. Immediate contact tracing began as outlined in the guidelines set by state/county and in the NBCU Production Playbook. Out of an abundance of caution, the production, based in New Jersey, has asked those in close contact with the impacted individual to self-isolate and paused filming.

I hear the situation is being closely monitored and it is unclear how long the temporary shutdown will last. For now, filming has been paused for a few days and the productions schedule is being adjusted to accommodate that.

The premiere of The Equalizer, headlined by Queen Latifah, attracted an audience of 20.4 million on Super Bowl Sunday. The series, whose filming also was impacted by the recent big snow storm,

How will The Equalizer follow up a strong premiere?

By jumping right back in to deliver more high-octane action.

Who would go out in the middle of the night?

Aunt Fry is all about honesty, so it's clear this will create a moral conflict for Robin.

The Equalizer Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Pilot

The Equalizer Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Pilot
That was a high-octane thrill ride from start to finish.

The impressive promotional campaign for The Equalizer touted the series as much, and The Equalizer Season 1 Episode 1 lived up to expectations.

Queen Latifah was one of the sole reasons to watch Star, but there is a lot to love about The Equalizer, and it largely comes down to the solid casting.

Robin McCall is fierce; she takes no crap and will put her life on the line in the name of helping the people who have nowhere else to run.

My first impression of the opening case involving Jewel was not entirely positive. I rolled my eyes when I noticed that the footage had been doctored to make the young girl look like a merciless killer.

It felt a little too sci-fi for me, but it also had a bigger purpose. We needed to get to the root of why

CBS' Equalizer: Grade Queen Latifah's Debut as the Ass-Kicking Mom We Need
Nine minutes. That’s about how long the wait time is for Queen Latifah to start beating down bad guys in CBS’ reboot of The Equalizer. And boy, is it worth the wait.

The pilot episode premiered Sunday following the Super Bowl, and stars Latifah as Robyn McCall, a newly retired CIA operative who is trying to settle into a quiet life of motherhood and school drop-offs. She almost gets her wish until an old handler and mentor named Bishop (Chris Noth) asks to meet up at the Coney Island Wonder Wheel to talk about what turns out to be her surreptitious resignation.

The Equalizer Review: Queen Latifah Rules in CBS' High-Octane Reboot

The Equalizer Review: Queen Latifah Rules in CBS' High-Octane Reboot
Even given TV’s current obsession with rebooting and reviving anything and everything, The Equalizer is a curious choice. The original 1985-89 CBS series, starring Edward Woodward as a spy-turned-private eye who cleaned up a crime-ridden New York City, is only a hazy memory to most viewers and plays like a dusty relic these days. (He did most of his business via pay phone, and advertised his services with a classified ad in the newspaper.) But the Equalizer brand recently got a revamp with a pair of Denzel Washington films, and CBS’ new take — debuting this Sunday, Feb. 7 after the

‘The Equalizer’ Casts Queen Latifah in an Extremely Familiar CBS Drama Story: TV Review

‘The Equalizer’ Casts Queen Latifah in an Extremely Familiar CBS Drama Story: TV Review
The Equalizer” represents both a variation of its genre and as straight up a CBS drama as they come. Borne out of the cult ‘80s CBS show starring Edward Woodward and 2014 blockbuster starring Denzel Washington, the 2021 iteration of “The Equalizer” mashes the two versions together to create a basic show that leans on its star to keep things interesting. It’s easy to understand why CBS would bank on that combination working in the traditionally buzzy post-Super Bowl slot; it’s less clear if this first episode will be uniquely gripping enough to capture a big enough audience to justify the choice.

Like Woodward and Washington before her, Latifah’s Equalizer is a former special agent who decides to help people more directly, bypassing supervision and the ensuing bureaucratic red tape altogether. When we first meet her, however, Robyn McCall is mostly just restless; her main activities are shuttling her

‘The Equalizer’s Queen Latifah Talks Working With Late Co-Creator Richard Lindheim, Setting Own Path In The Crime Drama Franchise
Queen Latifah seeks to stake her claim in The Equalizer franchise as she takes on part-time mom and part-time hero Robyn McCall in CBS’ reimagining of the classic 1985 series. While the Girls Trip actress may be the first Black woman portraying the Equalizer in the franchise’s span, powerful Black women seeking to do right by the little guys have made their marks throughout history, she said.

“We’ve been equalizing for centuries, from Hatshepsut to Stacey Abrams to Kamala Harris,” the lead star and executive producer said during CBS’ TCA panel on Wednesday.

Set to premiere after the Super Bow on Feb. 7, The Equalizer reboot follows Latifah’s Robyn McCall as she balances her crime-fighting life with her duties as a single mother. While the reboot will focus on Latifah’s champion defending the downtrodden, the latest iteration will also feature The Equalizer’s vulnerable, and warmer side – something

‘The Equalizer’ Teaser: Queen Latifah Protects The Defenseless In Teaser For CBS Series
Queen Latifah makes her debut as an under-the-radar crime fighter in the teaser for CBS’s The Equalizer.

The teaser, which dropped on Saturday, unveils the secret life of Latifah’s Robyn McCall. When Robyn’s daughter asks her about abrupt departure from work, Robyn shares the ever-popular nonanswer: “It’s complicated.” However, clips of Robyn protecting herself and others from dangerous situations prove otherwise.

Robyn’s daughter, however isn’t the only one seeking to learn more about her new side gig. Chris Noth’s William Bishop warns that the CIA is also on the hunt for answers as Robyn takes on a new, dangerous lifestyle. While Latifah’s Robyn hesitates to answer questions about why she’s decided to be a new hero, she knows exactly who she is and isn’t afraid to share it.

“I’m the one you call when you can’t call 911,” Robyn

CBS Reveals ‘The Equalizer’ Teaser Starring Queen Latifah

CBS Reveals ‘The Equalizer’ Teaser Starring Queen Latifah
Queen Latifah is an enigmatic hero in the 30-second teaser for CBS’ “The Equalizer,” which is a reimagining of the 1980s series of the same name starring Edward Woodward.

Latifah stars in the series as Robyn McCall, a single mother with a mysterious background who uses her skills to protect and defend those who cannot do so for themselves. While acting as a guardian angel to others, Robyn is also seeking her own redemption.

The teaser introduces Latifah’s character and her daughter, Delilah, played by Laya DeLeon Hayes. “What’s up with you, mom? Out of nowhere you quit your job last month, you wanna talk about it?” Delilah asks in the clip, to which Robyn responds: “It’s complicated.” Cue a montage of Latifah’s character wielding guns, dodging explosions and saving people.

Chris Noth, who portrays an ex-cia director, also appears in the teaser, giving viewers a

The Equalizer Reboot TV Series Release Date, Trailer, and Cast

The Equalizer Reboot TV Series Release Date, Trailer, and Cast
Queen Latifah is making The Equalizer into a “Ladies First” small screen platform come February with the launch of her starring role on CBS’s reboot series of the classic 1980s crime procedural. The series will appropriately join the Eye Network’s other currently running ‘80s reboots MacGyver and Magnum P.I.

Richard Lindheim, co-creator (with Michael Slone) of the Eye Network’s original 1985-1989 television series, is back as co-creator and executive producer, joined in that capacity by star Latifah herself. The series will operate under showrunners Terri Miller and Andrew Marlowe, who are also credited creators/executive producers.

Of course, The Equalizer is coming off a cross-media Renaissance of sorts, having spawned two successful action movie offshoots from director Antoine Fuqua—released in 2014 and 2018, respectively—starring Denzel Washington as grizzled vigilante Robert McCall, a character reinvented from the late Edward Woodward’s classic small screen version. Likewise, Latifah
