1992’s The Lawnmower Man and 1995’s Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace are making their UK Blu-ray debuts.
Here’s an intriguing pair of 1990s features, that are being bundled together for their first ever appearance on Blu-ray in the UK. 1992’s The Lawnmower Man and its sequel, 1995’s Lawnmower Man: Beyond Cyberspace are both arriving in a new double pack.
The 1992 original in particular was really rather groundbreaking. Notwithstanding the fact that it was the film Stephen King went to court to get his name taken off (when he realised how little the resultant movie had to do with the book it was supposedly based on), The Lawnmower Man was also the first big screen virtual reality movie. Not in an interactive sense, more in a strange shapes getting fruity with each other sense. It was quite a big screen experience too.
Brett Leonard directed, with Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey starring.

Audiences love a Stephen King movie. The work of the best-selling horror novelist has inspired a large number of films, and even the not-so-good ones draw a crowd. King isn't just an author, he's a brand, and when you slap his name on a movie poster, people tend to notice. Most of King's major works have already been adapted to the big and small screen, but he has plenty of short stories left for filmmakers to draw on. One of King's many short stories is "The Lawnmower Man," first published in a 1975 issue of "Cavalier" before being added to his short story collection "Night Shift," released in 1978. In the 1990s, Hollywood came calling and brought "The Lawnmower Man" to the big screen. Sort of. Kind of. Maybe. Well, not really.

Martin Scorsese is opening up about a breaking point in his career.
While filming his 2002 film “Gangs of New York,” Scorsese said he felt creatively strangled by the studio system, particularly by working with producer Harvey Weinstein with whom Scorsese fought over the length and budget of the period piece.
“I realized that I couldn’t work if I had to make films that way ever again,” Scorsese told GQ in a cover story. “If that was the only way that I was able to be allowed to make films, then I’d have to stop. Because the results weren’t satisfying. It was at times extremely difficult, and I wouldn’t survive it. I’d be dead. And so I decided it was over, really.”
Only two years later, Scorsese reunited with Weinstein on 2004’s “The Aviator” which also starred “Gangs of New York” lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

A new episode of the Black Sheep video series has just been released, and in this one we’re taking a look at a movie you might expect to be really popular, since it’s a sci-fi action thriller that pits Denzel Washington against Russell Crowe. It’s not popular… but maybe it should be. The movie is Virtuosity (watch it Here), and you can hear all about its virtues by checking out the video embedded above.
Directed by Brett Leonard from a screenplay written by Eric Bernt, Virtuosity has the following synopsis: A former cop who has been imprisoned for murdering the psychopath who killed his family, Parker Barnes is recruited to test out a new virtual-reality program where the goal is to apprehend a computer-generated being called Sid 6.7, who has been modeled on hundreds of deranged criminals. When Sid manages to escape into the real world, Barnes must...

Stephen King is among history’s most frequently adapted writers, up there with Charles Dickens, the Brothers Grimm, and William Shakespeare for inspiring the most successful page-to-picture creations. From Rob Reiner and David Cronenberg to Mike Flanagan and Andy Muschietti, genre filmmakers have clamored to take on King’s words for decades.
There’s no shortage of material to go around, of course. Horror’s reigning titan of literary terror has written more than 60 books and 200 short stories: many of them rooted in King’s signature strangeness and the believable humanity that turned 2017’s “It” into a global sensation. King has teamed up with his son Joe Hill to produce even more cinematic fodder in recent years. The pair’s “In the Tall Grass” novella became a Netflix movie in 2019, and Hill enjoyed his own success with Scott Derrickson’s 2022 “The Black Phone” adaptation.

It’s time for a new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and in this one we’re looking back at the 1992 sci-fi horror movie The Lawnmower Man (watch it Here) – which was initially marketed as being an adaptation of a short story by Stephen King, until King sued to have his name taken out of the marketing materials because the movie “bore no meaningful resemblance” to his story. To find out all about it, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Brett Leonard, who also wrote the screenplay with producer Gimel Everett, The Lawnmower Man has the following synopsis: The eccentric Dr. Lawrence Angelo puts mentally disabled landscaper Jobe Smith on a regimen of experimental pills and computer-simulated training sequences in hopes of augmenting the man’s intelligence. In time Jobe becomes noticeably brighter and also begins to fare much better with the opposite sex.

Science fiction frequently takes contemporary fears and turns them into something much larger. Just look at Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," considered by many to be the first science fiction novel, which took people's fears of autopsies and medical research at the time and created a fictional scientist who turned a corpse into a monster. Over a century later, writer Eric Bernt ("Surviving the Game") and director Brett Leonard ("Lawnmower Man") would create their own story of contemporary fears and their own Frankenstein's monster, too, played by Russell Crowe. The biggest difference is that while Frankenstein's monster was once human, Crowe's character Sid 6.7 is a computer program given a body composed of nanobots. He is as inhuman as they come.
"Virtuosity" was released in 1995, possibly the single greatest year for weird cyberpunk sci-fi movies. In a year populated by films like "Judge Dredd," "Johnny Mnemonic," and "Tank Girl," "Virtuosity" just couldn't compete.

Brett Leonard's 1992 film "The Lawnmower Man" shares its title with a 1975 Stephen King short story, but the film and the source material couldn't be more different.
In King's original story, a man hires an unusual-looking gardener to mow his lawn, only to find out that the gardener's lawncare process involves stripping naked and eating grass clippings. Before the end of the tale, the gardener reveals himself to be a satyr who works for the god Pan and murders the protagonist.
Leonard's film, meanwhile, is about a kind, simple-minded handyman named Jobe (Jeff Fahey). Jobe is beloved by the denizens of his small town but is grievously abused by his caretaker, the local priest. Just outside of town is an experimental, computer-based mind laboratory that has been using a combination of drugs and virtual reality equipment to transform chimpanzees into cybernetically enhanced soldiers. When a chimp experiment goes awry, one scientist named Dr.

In the 1990s, the internet was scary. A lot of new communication technology had opened up to the public, and Hollywood responded by making a slew of paranoid cyber-thrillers, each one positing a near-future world where one's personal information was no longer private, and where wealthy, corrupt international companies paid top-dollar to get said information for their own nefarious purposes. It was a future where the human consciousness had been damaged by prolonged consumption to increasingly truncated information nuggets. I know -- crazy, right?
Movies like Brett Leonard's "The Lawnmower Man" envisioned V.R. technology as capable of forcibly evolving the human brain. Iain Softley's "Hackers" (1995) uncovered a neo-punk subculture of computer-savvy teens who would access anything and do anything their prankish minds desired. Irwin Winkler's "The Net" (1995) was the most daring of all, suggesting that future people might spend all their time in online chat rooms...

Miramax Television is developing a TV series based on Gangs of New York with Martin Scorsese attached to executive produce the series and direct the first two episodes. This project is different than the Gangs of New York series that Scorsese was previously attached to in 2013. Deadline reported this exclusive with the following information: “Details about the drama, from playwright/TV writer Brett Leonard (Shantaram), are sketchy but I hear this is a new take on the story with new characters that were not featured in the movie, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz.” Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio in Gangs of New York (Credit: Miramax/courtesy Everett Collection) Scorsese previously executive produced the HBO series Boardwalk Empire which starred Steve Buscemi, Michael Shannon, and Michael K. Williams (who passed in 2021). Scorsese won an Emmy for directing the pilot episode of the series which was about the...

Whoopsy daisy! Twenty years after directing The Gangs of New York, Deadline reports that Martin Scorsese is set to helm a TV series adaptation for Miraxmax Television. The original movie was based on Herbert Asbury’s 1927 non-fiction book of the same name and starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz.
The Gangs of New York TV series is being developed by Brett Leonard (Shantaram), and Deadline hears that this will be a new take on the story with new characters who weren’t featured in the Martin Scorsese movie. Herbert Asbury’s novel dealt with the rise and fall of 19th century gangs in New York City, prior to the domination of the Italian-American Mafia during Prohibition in the 1920s. In addition to directing the first two episodes of the Gangs of New York series, Scorsese will also executive produce. The last time Martin Scorsese headed to the small...

Martin Scorsese has a filmography containing so many projects that took years, if not decades, to get to the screen. One of the longest to gestate and most difficult to make was 2002's "Gangs of New York," based on a book by Herbert Asbury that Scorsese first read back in 1970. That's three decades before the film even became a reality to make, and then there was the knock-down, drag-out battle behind the scenes with producer Harvey Weinstein about the cut of the picture, delaying the release of the film an entire year. The film was highly anticipated and received 10 Oscar nominations, but you would be hard pressed to find a ton of film fans who rank "Gangs of New York" among the director's best. I, however, am one of those few. It has its issues, namely the incredibly miscast Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz, but the ambition, style, and craftsmanship...

Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese is executive producing a “Gangs of New York” TV series after helming the 2002 feature film.
Based on Herbert Asbury’s 1927 nonfiction book, “The Gangs of New York” follows the rival gangs of late-1800s New York City. Scorsese is set to direct the first two episodes of the series, which was developed internally at Miramax TV and penned by playwright and TV writer Brett Leonard.
Per Deadline, the upcoming series will not center on the same characters as the film, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz. Scorsese’s managers Rick Yorn and Chris Donnelly are also executive producing the upcoming show, which will be taken out to buyers in November.
Scorsese previously was attached to a 2013 TV adaptation of “The Gangs of New York,” which would have expanded the portrayal to gangs in other major metropolitan areas at the turn of the century,...

Exclusive: A high-profile TV series project from Miramax Television based on Herbert Asbury’s 1927 non-fiction book The Gangs of New York is about to hit the premium/streaming marketplace. Oscar winner Martin Scorsese, who directed the 2002 feature adaptation of the book, is attached to executive produce the potential series and direct the first two episodes.

Asbury’s book details the confrontations between rival gangs in New York in the mid- to late-1800s, prior to the domination of the Italian-American Mafia during Prohibition in the 1920s. That latter period was the subject of HBO’s drama Boardwalk Empire, which Scorsese executive produced and won an Emmy for directing the pilot episode.

“Werewolf by Night,” Marvel Studios’ Halloween-themed mini-movie, has just hit Disney+. And it’s something to howl about.
A black-and-white creature feature directed by frequent Marvel Studios collaborator Michael Giacchino and styled after similar movies from the 1940s, it introduces us to the title character, whose human name is Jack Russell (get it?) and who, in the film, is played by the great Gael Garcia Bernal. Jack is brought to a remote estate with fellow monster hunters, where he is tasked with bagging the biggest, most fearsome beast yet. But can he accomplish his goal while also concealing his true identity?
That’s the big question. But today we are here to talk about an even bigger question: who is that big monster that everybody is after? What is his deal and where could he fit into the MCU going forward?
Major spoilers for “Werewolf by Night” follow. If you haven’t watched yet,...

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, stranger and stranger characters from the bottomless depths of the Marvel Comics universe are going to begin appearing. At its inception in 2008, the MCU still took place in a world that struck at least a passing resemblance to our own. Sometime in 2016, however, when Scott Derrickson's "Doctor Strange" announced that magic is real, the MCU effectively left much of its connection to the real world behind. By 2022, so many extraordinary super-beings and omnipotent space deities have been introduced that nothing seems impossible anymore.
Michael Giacchino's new TV special "Werewolf by Night," now available on Disney+, takes a swing that, in earlier years, might have been considered bold for the MCU. As it so happens, monsters are real in the Marvel universe, and they have secret societies and superhero teams of their own. This article contains spoilers for "Werewolf by Night."
"Werewolf by Night," the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is being presented as a "special presentation." This means, one can presume, that its events won't be as heavily incorporated into the rest of the MCU in the same fashion its theatrical counterparts are. "Werewolf By Night" comes from a specially branded corner of Marvel Comics usually reserved for monsters, demons, and other supernatural creatures of the night. Ghost Rider, Blade, and Morbius the Living Vampire also hail from this corner. Werewolf by Night was originally created in 1972 by Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Mike Ploog. The character is a man named Jack Russell (nothing to do with the breed of terrier) who, true to his name, becomes a wolf man every full moon. Fittingly, the original "Werewolf by Night" comics were written by a man named Marv Wolfman.

Exclusive: It was 10 years in the making, but a feature documentary about Sly and The Family Stone and their impact on the development of funk, soul, rock, and psychedelic music is on its way. Dance to the Streaming Music, from Winter State Entertainment, will include exclusive interviews and footage of Sly and the Family Stone and other artists – and their reversal of fortune in the wake the Music Modernization Act. The project is wrapping up for release in 2019.
The last anyone heard of Stone, one of the pioneers of funk music as mastermind for Sly and the Family Stone,
was after a series of legal and financial problems who was destitute and living out of a camper van in Los Angeles. But due to the Music Modernization Act, enacted in Oct. 2018 which gives royalties on digital streaming, things have changed for him.

Exclusive: A feature film about the courageous U.S. activist Rosa Parks is on its way and it just may mark the first time a biopic about Parks will make it into this nation’s theaters. The filmmakers — Winter State Entertainment and a large producing team– are fast-tracking the project to go before the cameras in 2019.
There have been some projects in the past, but not a feature biopic: In the early 2000s, there was an Academy Award nominated documentary Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks (2001) and then Parks herself collaborated on the TV movie The Rosa Parks Story which starred Angela Bassett as the mighty civil rights activist who refused to give up her seat in the whites only section of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama in the 1950s. The director whose 1992 cult film The Lawnmower Man helped bring virtual reality to the cinematic mainstream is working on a new project that he hopes will spark a new wave of Vr storytelling.
Brett Leonard’s latest endeavor, Hollywood Rooftop, is a scripted project that’s being shot simultaneously as a 10-episode virtual reality FragFilm and as a traditional 2D feature film. It combines aspects of movie-making — a character- and dialogue-driven narrative — with the 360-degree spatial language of Vr.
“What John Cassavetes did when the handheld camera came out, I believe we can have with Vr,” Leonard said in an interview with Deadline.
Hollywood Rooftop chronicles a group of talented young up-and-coming actors. They share their challenges, loves, failures and successes as they all try to “make it” in Hollywood.
Written by Mona Lisa Moru, who also will join the ensemble of young up-and-comers, the film features a cast of mostly European actors,...

The film that Stephen King insisted his name be taken off. It's The Lawnmower Man...
The film: Dr Lawrence Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) is at the forefront of research, using virtual reality and drug combinations in an attempt to increase intelligence in primates. When it all goes wrong, he turns to an intellectually disabled man, Jobe (Jeff Fahey), and promises him intelligence in return for his role as a human test subject. Naturally, it all goes a bit awry when Jobe succeeds beyond Angelo’s wildest dreams. Oh and Dean Norris adopts a weird, clipped accent and is nefarious.

This signalled the formal end of the Cold War, which left the United States as the sole remaining superpower, but did not necessarily usher in an era of peace at home and abroad. The Sundance Film Festival is just getting started in Park City, Utah, and virtual reality company Jaunt Inc. is heating things up at the winter event by announcing a Vr series reimagining of The Lawnmower Man, the 1992 film based on the Stephen King short story of the same name.
A far cry from King’s short story upon which it is based, Brett Leonard’s The Lawnmower Man movie heavily incorporated virtual reality in its plot. No details on the Vr series’ plot are known at this time, other than the fact that it will be a “reimagination of the film.”

From a range of eras and genres, here's Jenny and Alex's light-hearted pick of 50 great opening title sequences from the movies...
Odd List
We don’t go to the cinema much, because we hate people. We also don’t go because there’s always the risk of accidentally going to see the wrong film. It's not helped by the fact that there's no way of telling until it’s too late, because there are no bloody opening credits on lots of modern films. And by the time you do realise, you’ve eaten all your popcorn and you can’t be bothered to move.
The movies on this list won’t give you that problem. These opening credits are perfect scene setters for the movies that follow, so you won’t have to worry about awkward popcorn wasting moments. It's not a top 50, rather a selection of 50 interesting credits sequences,...

As a document of the early 1990s, The Lawnmower Man serves as a colourful time capsule. Aside from its big shirts, tight jeans and unaccountably buoyant hair, it's also a snapshot of the era's technology and fascination for virtual reality.
At a time when the media was gripped by images of people wearing cumbersome headsets and gloves pawing eerily at the empty air in front of them, virtual reality was widely considered to be the emerging technology which could transform life as we know it. And while this may yet come to pass - Oculus Rift has recently seen Vr back in the news - we're no nearer to having our daily lives transformed by it than we were 20 years ago.

Back in August, the website, Monster Legacy, conducted an interview with Nick Nicolaou, co-founder of the Make-Up Effects Group, the company responsible for the special effects seen in the 2005 Man-Thing film. How the budget effected the film: Nick Nicolaou: We were approached by Brett Leonard and the production and were successful with our bid for the project. The script was cool — but so many things started to be cut and changed due to budgetary issues. I feel the final film lost so much by the time it got to the screen. There were more interesting character building ideas surrounding the Man-Thing creature, that showed his connection to the swamp and the environment. Many were heavily FX related, so they were the first to go. Why the change to Man-Thing's comic design: Nick Nicolaou: The Director & Production Designer wanted to “tweak” the design a little and Marvel were...

“Dead Pit” (1989)
Directed By: Brett Leonard
Written By: Brett Leonard & Gimel Everett
Starring: Danny Gochnauer (Dr. Ramzi), Cheryl Lawson (Jane Doe), Jeremy Slate (Dr. Swan), Stephen Foster (Christian Meyers), Geha Getz (Sister Clair), Joan Bechtel (Nurse Kygar), Mara Everett (Nurse Robbins)
“Dead Pit” turned out to be a pleasant surprise in the zombie genre. Generally not well known, this flick adds a surprisingly good supernatural flare to a traditional zombie movie.
I’ve seen a lot of painful zombie films but was pleased I didn’t have to add this one to that list! It received positive reviews from critics at the time. It has been released on VHS and DVD.
The plot starts us off twenty years in the past to a former Doctor Ramzi (Danny Gochnauer) torturing his patients. He is murdered, buried, and sealed in the basement to be forgotten entirely.

The amount of women making films is fairly small, but there are three that have that left their stamp on cinema, specifically, in the realm of horror/science fiction/fantasy. Mary Lambert directed the best horror film of 1989 with Pet Sematary, and Jennifer Lynch helmed the weird thrillogy that is Surveillance, Hisss and Boxing Helena. Then there is Rachel Talalay, who will forever be remembered for Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, and to a lesser extent - Tank Girl. But what about her cyber thriller from 1993 that never gets any love? Well, with my latest chapter of Late Night Classics, I was given the chance to interview Rachel about her favorite flick of mine.

In 1987 the horror genre was dominated by the slasher fad of that decade. Zombies were mostly something seen only in Italian gorefests with the name Fulci attached. Ghosts and supernatural films were few and far between. Vampires ... well, vampires had been neutered and reduced to whiny flouncy boys by the likes of Anne Rice.
Seemingly out of nowhere came a film that introduced a young audience to a new, hip breed of bloodsucker in The Lost Boys. These vamps, while retaining the inherent sexiness of Rice’s Louis and Lestat, were, by their actions, a callback to the more vicious creatures made popular by the likes of people like Christopher Lee. The Lost Boys was nothing short of a cultural phenomenon and a film that served as a touchstone for the zeitgeist of the time.

By guest blogger Peter Belsito Brett Leonard I recently met Brett Leonard and immediately liked him and his philosophy of work in life and the biz – a questioning and somewhat radical, experimental outlook which I just think is so relevant these days. As an accomplished filmmaker, his passion for helping young filmmakers find their voice is an inspiration and I also like his far reaching vision into ‘new technology’. Too often today our colleagues in the movie business fear and resist the trends we must learn to follow in our technological medium (i.e. cinema). Technology has no morality, nor…...

Summit Entertainment are preparing a new kind of magic. Just two years after the franchise-killing fourth sequel, Highlander's head is to be magically re-attached (just like Sean Connery's in Highlander 2). The reboot announced by producer Peter S Davis in Empire issue 241 is properly underway. And the director? Justin Lin, whose CV to date includes Fast and Furious, and its predecessor Tokyo Drift, as well as indie dramas Better Luck Tomorrow and Finishing the Game. The original Highlander franchise began with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery chopping heads in Russell Mulachy's original film in 1986, and ended ignominiously on the Sci-Fi channel in 2007, with Adrian Paul dodging mutant cannibals in an inexpensive Romanian forest (Brett Leonard's Highlander: The Source). In between were three other sequels, two TV series, a Saturday morning cartoon and an anime. Clearly, like Mulcahy before him, Lin has the flashy visuals down pat, and he...

Most horror geeks know Brian Yuzna as a frequent Stuart Gordon collaborator who helped to bring us Re-Animator, From Beyond, and the underrated Dolls. Younger gene freaks would also know Mr. Y from his numerous Filmax productions, which include Dagon, Rottweiler, and (of course) Beyond Re-Animator. But now, according to Big V, Brian is about to deliver a trio of 3-D horror flicks. The first will be a giant monster movie called Amphibious, the second will be Brett Leonard's Necronauts, and the third will be Richard Stanley's Cold Blooded. Now, I call this news all sorts of interesting because A) Stanley doesn't direct many films, B) Leonard has never directed a good film, and C) they're all 3-D horror movies! With monsters!
Questions: Does Danny Boyle want to direct 28 Months Later? Maybe. Will next year's Friday the 13th Part 3 DVD come in 3-D? Sure looks like it. Want...

Oh my! There's film news and there's super-good film news, and this little tidbit certainly falls into the latter. Has anyone ever told you I love 3D movies (yeah, you, every time you see me)? Ok, I probably did tell ya before, but 3D movies are one of my most favouritest things for giving a bit of kiddified magic into the piss and shit world of adulthood. Well, a less well-known fact could be that I also really rather adore Brian Yuzna for having a hand in some of my fave horrors (Society, Re-Animator, The Dentist, Necronomicon, Dagon,) ergo, with all the remake/sequel news to boot, this unique piece really excites me.
This trio of goodness, the first of which will be giant sea scorpion-based Amphibious (!), is to be Indonesia-made in conjunction with distributor Queen Imperial Films. The second 3D feature output from this shingle will be Necronauts, a...
