This Halo article contains spoilers.
Surprise! The Halo season 2 finale not only got Master Chief and Cortana to the ringworld but it also introduced the live-action version of one of the original game’s key villains: the scheming artificial intelligence known as 343 Guilty Spark. Originally voiced by Tim Dadabo in the games, he is now brought to life on the show by Harry Lloyd, who you might know best as Viserys Targaryen in Game of Thrones.
In the season finale, suitably titled “Halo,” we watch as Master Chief recounts his long journey to the ring to Guilty Spark. It almost seems like the whole show has actually been John-117’s retelling of events to the AI. We know that this conversation is happening some time after Master Chief first landed on the ring, as we see his visor has been shattered since the last time we saw him. Presumably, that...

Not to be one of those insufferable millennials who cries out "Only '90s kids remember," but hot dog do only '90s kids remember the glory of watching "X-Men: The Animated Series," aka the best animated Marvel superhero show of all time. The '90s was a bit of a wasteland of quality superhero offerings in live-action, but animated television was absolutely thriving. "X-Men: The Animated Series" helped turn a group of marvelous mutants into fast-favorites for a new generation, and set the groundwork for what many view as the definitive portrayals of many of the characters. And because everything old is new again, a continuation series, "X-Men '97," is coming our way to Disney+. The series is thankfully not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning it is picking up where the canon of the series finale left off in 1997 with "Graduation Day."

Riot Games's online battle arena video game, League of Legends, has a worldwide playership -- at last estimate -- of over forty million people. It's little wonder that when Netflix premiered Arcane, a series based in the LoL world, in November 2021, its viewership blew up.
What was somewhat surprising was how appealing the show is to non-League watchers. A collaboration between Riot and animation studio Fortiche Productions, Arcane streamed as three acts, each consisting of three episodes, with acts dropping weekly, with consecutively record-setting viewer numbers.
Two years later, Arcane continues to entertain and inspire League, animation, and Imagine Dragons fans with a 100% Fresh score at Rotten Tomatoes and consistently high streams. So when will we get the next chapter of Piltover and Zaun? Who will return? And what does it mean for the future of Hextech and Shimmer?

The much-maligned Richard III finally gets the royal treatment in Stephen Frears’ The Lost King as amateur historian Philippa Langley unearths the monarch’s five-century-old remains in a parking lot in Leicester, England, in 2012. Two books and a documentary later, IFC Films presents the feature film version in 750+ theaters.
“It took eight years from starting the search to cutting the tarmac. To see it telescoped into a hundred or so minutes made it really powerful for me,” Langley, who’s played in the film by Sally Hawkins, told Deadline.

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies has spoken in the past about how the previous Doctor Who spin-offs came too soon. Given the current expanded universe boom across various franchises led by Marvel’s dominance of cinema and subsequent ventures into TV, the launch of The Sarah-Jane Adventures, Torchwood, etc…. was ahead of its time.
Now, Davies argues, is the moment for Doctor Who‘s version of the MCU. And according to a recent article on mirror.co.uk, that’s exactly what’s about to happen. Rumour has it that fans can expect spin-off series featuring some of the Doctor’s most famous enemies.
The Mirror’s anonymous source suggested: “Fans can expect to see Sontarans, Weeping Angels and Sea Devils in separate series showing what they get up to when the Doctor isn’t there to stop them, along with Daleks and Cybermen.”

George R.R. Martin loves to make audiences cringe. Martin's "Game of Thrones" books and the massively successful HBO series the universe inspired — "Game of Thrones" and "House of The Dragon" to date, with more to follow — are rich with subversive and flinch-inspiring moments. Consider the former's gasp-inspiring pilot finale. Yes, the images of Jaime and Cersei Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lena Headey) engaging in coitus were shocking. Seeing Jaime push Bran Stark (Issac Hempstead Wright) out a window? Even more so.
But neither is the scene's most crucial or resonant moment. That honor goes to Jaime's tossed-aside utterance of, "The things I do for love," before his hands cast Bran toward paralysis. There's a whole world of uncomfortable to be unpacked in those six words. Jaime loves his sister and is willing to murder for her, and the casualness with which he dispatches of a child (plus the drollness of...

You're probably familiar with the old saying "History is written by the victors." A more accurate sentiment would be "History is written by the conquerors." Those that end up on top have the desire to justify and celebrate their conquering, and if that story gets passed along through time, it becomes an accepted fact rather than a propagandistic perception. Only in the last few years has there been major pushback from folks of all stripes on the historical perception of Christopher Columbus, who for hundreds of years has been hailed as the founder of the "New World," which isn't true at all. Most stories need heroes, and if you've silenced those who oppose you, you can claim to the hero yourself.

The true lives of so many kings, queens, and emperors have been lost to history – their faces scratched off coins, their names scrubbed from the record, and, in the case of Richard III, their stories turned into villainous pageantry by one William Shakespeare. Separating fact from historical propaganda is steady and ponderous work, a series of slow-motion spats confined to lecture theatres and academic annuals. It’s hardly the stuff of celluloid dreams. That’s what led to the hypocrisy of The Lost King, Stephen Frears’s comedy drama about the discovery of Richard III’s skeleton. Its self-congratulatory crusade to restore its subject’s reputation has, for the sake of entertainment, distorted reality to the point that it borders on farce.

After the success of their Oscar-nominated collaboration on the 2013 drama “Philomena,” starring Judi Dench, director Stephen Frears and star-screenwriter Steve Coogan were eager to team up once again — similarly this time on a true-life-inspired tale about amateur sleuthing.
“The Lost King” tells the story of Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins), a self-guided historian who seemingly stumbles upon the remains of Richard III, only to be thwarted by various forces that doubt her discovery, much of them in academia.
Frears and Coogan stopped by TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto International Film Festival to discuss what drew them to work together on this unique project, which also rejoined them with “Philomena” composer Alexandre Desplat, co-writer Jeff Pope and producer Christine Langan.

If you’re a fan of “The Trip” and its sequels, those semi-improvised road comedies in which Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon play slightly exaggerated versions of their real-life selves, you’ll know that they’re about more than just two men driving through the European countryside, eating fabulous food, trying to top each other with their Al Pacino impersonations. Coogan, in particular, comes off as a fellow who, for all his larkish narcissism, is so steeped in history that it’s literally alive for him. And that’s the feeling that courses through “The Lost King,” the new movie written by Coogan and Jeff Pope and directed by Stephen Frears.

Don’t believe everything you read. More than a hundred years after King Richard III was killed during the Battle of Bosworth Field, the last important fight of the War of the Roses and widely considered the end of the Middle Ages, William Shakespeare wrote his “Richard III,” which dramatized the king’s life, works, and death, turning him into something of a monster in the process. But what if, Stephen Frears’ “The Lost King” wonders, everything we thought we know about Richard, much of it straight from The Bard’s pen itself, was wrong indeed?
Many people have noodled on that same thing in the centuries since his death, including the nearly century-old Richard III Society, which is comprised of not just fans of the ruler, but fans who are dedicated to reassessing his reputation. But “The Lost King” is mostly concerned with just one fan: Philippa Langley, a...

Except for Queen Elizabeth II, whose reign was documented in real time with the advent of audiovisual technologies, the legacies of most other British monarchs were preserved by third parties in writing. The perceptions of others, sometimes even their adversaries, shaped their image. Victors, as we know, mold the narrative for their benefit.
In the texts published following his death (including Shakespeare’s play), King Richard III, the ruler at the center of director Stephen Frears and screenwriters Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope’s new inspirational dramedy — premiering at the Toronto Film Festival — was portrayed as a monstrous hunchback who murdered his nephews. Actor-writer-producer Steve Coogan, his co-screenwriter Jeff Pope, director Stephen Frears, composer Alexandre Desplat and producer Christine Langan have gotten the band back together to dramatize the story of how self-taught historian Philippa Langley, played by Sally Hawkins, found the remains of King Richard III in a parking lot.
The result is pleasant-enough middlebrow entertainment that will serve the cinematic needs of older viewers especially. But it’s considerably less interesting than Philomena, a more muckraking work that churned over the Catholic Church’s shameful past and had the all-powerful empathy-extracting weapon that is Judi Dench doing an Irish accent. Moreover, it’s just...

In the span of a week and a half, the two biggest fantasy franchises of all time have returned with HBO's "House of the Dragon" and Prime Video's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." Both are prequel shows led by blondes who just happen to be dragon riders or immortal Elves. Both buck the Eurocentric casting of previous franchise outings with the addition of prominent Black characters. They're not exactly world-building from scratch, since we've been to the fictional realms of Westeros and Middle-earth before. Yet as they set about annexing or rebuilding within those realms, "House of the Dragon" and "The Rings of Power" deepen our knowledge of certain spots on the map, simultaneously delivering drama to reestablish the ethos of "Game of Thrones" and "The Lord of the Rings."

As soon as HBO announced House of the Dragon would be the first official spinoff series from Game of Thrones, fans were intrigued.
Centering around House Targaryen, the new series is also set some 172 years before what unfolded in Game of Thrones.
In the original series, the Targaryens were a dying breed, having whittled away to Aemon Targaryen (Peter Vaughan) at Castle Black, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), her brother, Viserys (Harry Lloyd), and Jon Snow (Kit Harington), who turned out to be a hidden Targaryen born to Ned Stark’s (Sean Bean) sister.
However, in House of the Dragon, the family is at the apex of their rule. House Targaryen is plentiful with dragons and King Viserys (Paddy Considine) is a kind ruler and not a Targaryen who has descended...

"This is starting to look like an unhealthy obsession." Pathe UK has revealed the first official UK trailer for The Lost King, an investigation into British history based on a real story. This is premiering at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival before it opens in the UK in October, though there's still no US date yet. Sally Hawkins stars as Philippa Langley, with Harry Lloyd as Richard III, plus Steve Coogan, James Fleet, Sinead MacInnes,...
